What has better longevity?

OK, so I ended up getting $200 in sears gift certificates on account of them shipping me the wrong TV, and I decided to pick up a console. Haven't had anything since the PS2 first came out, and I'm definitely NOT hardcore about gaming. I was figuring on either paying $50 more and getting a 360 Pro system, or returning my Aquos BD player, combining that $200 with the gift cards and getting a PS3 slim.

So my question is twofold: Which is the "better" system, and which has the best longevity? I have no issue putting up the extra $50 for a console if it'll last longer, but on the other hand I can get a game and second controller with the $100 I'm saving.

So... any opinions?

If you do not want to pay for Xbox Live (50-60 a year) and want a free online service pick PS3.
PS3 has just been out for ~2 years and a bit more so there will definitely be games for it coming. There has been a slew of good games for the PS3 that have come out recently and more on the way.

Xbox 360 already has many many games that are good for it, if your friends are on the 360, get that instead.

PS3 is lacking in the Japanese RPG department so you'd have to rethink if you like JRPG's. FPS-wise they are roughly the same (360/PS3) it comes down to the controller preference. I believe 360 has better controls for FPS' but lack in others such as fighting games.

PS3 IMO would probably have the best longevity.

PS3 is one of the best Blu-Ray player, most games are multi platform anyway.

I'm not much for online play either, to be honest. I'd probably get Madden, NHL10, Marvel Alliance and maybe Batman:Arkham right off the bat. SF-IV as well. This is just going to be a VERY casual gameplay thing. Definitely into RPG much more than FPS, and while the wireless and free online has notches in PS3's favor, streaming Netflix is a huge plus for the 360. Now that I have an HDTV, I was definitely looking into a Netflix account.

Do whatever you think is right. But I'll tell you this, BM:AA and SFIV are both better on the PS3. Viewing distance in Batman is further than the 360 version, plus you get to play with joker in the challenge maps! SFIV PS3 is tournament standard because it mimics the arcade version closer. Sports games might be better on the 360 but if its online you probably won't notice the difference. I think PS3 has something similar to Netflix (gathered that from another thread) but not sure how good it is. Canada gets crap all for video services.

I could not find a 13month live subscription for 50-60USD, only 44 USD.

Though I have an xbox because my friends do, too.

Otherwise, I wouldn't have either.

Link regarding ps3 version being superior in SF4?

As for netflix, look into playon media server for the ps3. All in all, I prefer my ps3 to my 360.

Playon...
Isn't that going to need a PC?

I know (when I feel like it), I use an external HDD for playing movies through my xbox (though it's a pain to convert).

Gotta use what you got! (and this is all I got for 'HTPC' use).
Though I heard xbox is supposed to get Hulu by the end of this year?

AFAIK PS3 version does not lag on diner stage with C. Viper playing on it amongst some other levels on the 360. PS3 is tournament standard in many high profile U.S tournaments.

Yes, i cant find the specific links, but for tournaments where absolute reaction time and reliability are required, PS3 is the console of choice for SF4. There are a few hiccups on the 360 version. But, for a regular every day player i dont think one would even notice.

Get whichever console your friends have. Honestly, i play my PS3 more because my friends that play the type of games i play have PS3s. Id play my 360 more if it were reverse.

If you are 50/50, the PS3 at least hast he addition of a blu-ray player and free online. That would most likely be a tipping point for me if i could only choose one and it was an apples for apples scenario.

You know what they both do and what they can't do. The game library and features of both is littered all over the internet. The opinions of various fanboys shouldn't change your opinion.

Actually, PS3 is preferred for tournaments because you can use your old joysticks with much less fuss.

For movies then HDTV + BR = win.

Whilst Live is marginally ahead of PSN you are gonna have to pay for it if you ever do wanna play online...something to consider.

Rumor has it that PSN is going to start charging soon as they're bleeding money. Just a rumor though.

Doubt it as Home is milking money of the punters if the reports are correct. It is also a bit of a big thing to start doing and if there was any inkling of truth it would be all over message boards....this is the first time I've heard of it.

My opinion:

Longevity of the PS3 and 360, equal.

As far as which would be best for you?

Get the PS3 if you want to game online with limited functionality, watch Blu-ray 1080p 7.1 surround movies as well as DVDs, play PS3 exclusive titles and prefer a better quality hardware build.

Get the 360 if you are more hardcore about online gaming, watch streaming HD 720p/1080p 5.1 surround movies and DVDs, play 360 exclusive titles and multiplatform titles and will settle for less quality in the build of the hardware.

If you have friends that prefer one over the other by a large margin, and you want to game WITH them, go with the majority.

You can't trust this guy. I mean look at his sig, he hasn't even memorized his Wii code!

I don't think I even know where to find the friend code on our Wii...

In all honesty though you summed it up pretty well. While the 360's reliability has gotten alot better since launch it's still not near the level of the PS3. My 360 hasn't given me a lick of trouble and as long as you keep it well ventilated it should be fine.

I own both a PS3 and a 360. I play my 360 a lot more than my PS3 because the online is better, more of my friends own a 360, and I like the controller better for FPS/TPS. That being said if I was in your situation I would go with the PS3. Most games make their way to the PS3 eventually if they did not already launch on both systems. Being that you don't favor FPS games really then you are not missing many exclusives on the 360 since most of the big exclusives on the 360 are FPS/TPS. PS3 + PS3mediaserver makes for a kick ass media server if you want to watch videos from your computer on your TV. Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted are some of the best games I have played in a long time and are worth it for a PS3 alone.

As for the SF4 discussion being that your a casual gamer I would doubt you are going to go to any SF4 tournaments lol

I reckon it might be worth a look at the games on XBLA / PSN. If you're not a hardcore gamer I reckon there's a good chance these are the sort of pick up and play for half hour titles that might appeal to you.

I bought 4 XBLA games this summer. Granted, BF1943 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 came out on both consoles, Shadow Complex is an XBLA exclusive and the best of the bunch.

Being that he is getting a NEW 360 he will most likely be getting a jasper 360 which has a fail rate of less than 2% so reliability will be about the same for both consoles....

Didn't know Jasper was that low.

I had an original launch 360 that I sold to a buddy (works fine still) and bought a Jasper arcade unit. Neither gave me any issues.

I agree that the Jasper (from what we have heard on the internet) is leaps and bounds better than it was before, and most likely matches the PS3 failure rate. However, my comment about the build quality stands. The PS3's parts (case, buttons, hardware connections, overall feel and internals) IMO are a much better quality material and workmanship.

To me that doesn't matter though. I prefer my 360 over my PS3. However, I am not afraid to admit that the 360 seems inferior when it comes to the part quality.

As for RROD, I bought a launch 360 and it was replaced 3 times with a refurb under warranty. I decided to sell my last refurb they sent me and I bought a new Elite about a year ago. I haven't had any issues with the Elite, which is a Falcon.

In regards to Shadow Complex....top 3 title this gen...on any console. And not just from XBLA and PSN, but full retail channel games as well. In my opinion.

the console that your friends play will have the most longevity for you. That's the only answer that should matter given the significant overlap between both systems.

If you don't game with friends, then I can't help you.

I liked the BluRay capabilities of the PS3, plus I'm a God of War fan and don't play many FPS games on consoles. I would like the Netflix access that 360 owners have, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. They're both pretty great systems and you really can't go wrong with either.

As others have said, go with the system whose features are most important to you.

For me it came down to price, title selection and what my friends currently had. The PS3 just couldnt compete. That was almost two years ago and the only thing that has changed is the price. The title selection is growing, but cant hold a flame to the 360. I know maybe 4 people personally that have PS3's, but I know at least 50 that have 360's. I prefer to play games like CoD with friends, so the PS3 was out. The blu-ray player is nice, but still not enough to get me to buy a PS3 instead of a 360.

That said, with the current price drop, free PSN and growing selection, the PS3 is getting closer to being on my shopping list. It would be a nice addition, but I wont eat Ramen for a week just to get one.

before you go beleiving some tools on the internet you might want to visit the playstation.com forums and look into the general PS3 section.......the reliability is not as good as you think it is for the older consoles.... The PS3 has gone through no less than 4 hardware revisions.........and I seriously doubt that they were all due to cost savings alone as it is more economical for a company to do one or 2 major hw revisions....

I have

Wii
Xbox 360
PS3 slim

Microsoft has basically owned the virtual world, and XBL is no different. When it comes to cheap games, there are tons of XBL arcade titles, and not near as many on PSN (and I'm talking about 'good' games). If you pay MS $50 for XBL, you're getting ripped off. Newegg has it for $40, and Buy.com has sales all the time for 12 months for less than $30.

Netflix is great, but you can't stream HD from Netflix. You will be able to stream HD from XBL soon, but not yet. I don't think that's coming until later this year. Also, don't expect the latest releases to be available to stream. The selection isn't incredibly large when comparing to their DVD catalog.

Another thing to consider is MS has done pretty good at keeping Sony under their foot when it comes to DLC. Take the GTA4 episodes, and the Fallout 3 content as good examples. I think Sony is finally getting the FO3 content. It seems to go that way quite a bit. Just get enough HDD space to begin with if you go with MS and buy a lot of DLC and arcade titles; HDD space is friggin gold to MS. I also hate the MS point system too.

My only other complaint about the PS3 is the freakin' load times for patches and game installs. What a beating.

I wish MS and Sony would just shake hands and quit with the exclusives and time release stuff. It just screws us in the long run, regardless of which console you own.

Other than that, I think they are both good, but like everyone else said, I'd get the console that everyone you know has.

Diffidently PS3. I haven't played my 360 in months. The games out now for PS3 and the upcoming ones are all going to be great.

That's a horrible wish. Ever heard of competition? If that happened then why not Nintendo do it too so we can all play Mario Galaxy on PS3 or 360? If your wish came true, there would be no competition and absolutely no incentive to buy one console over the other.

PS3 is one of the best Blu-Ray player, most games are multi platform anyway.

Most good games aren't though. So when buying a game console, always always always buy the console that has the games you want to play. Secondly, buy the console your friends own. Nobody wants to buy a console and find out you can't play the games you want, or play alone since all your friends are on the other platform.

Games first, always.

short version of what is stated below (i own both consoles)
ps3 controller is more accurate and quick to aim than the 360 controller imo
360 controller is more comfortable
xbox live is way better than ps3s online and playstation home is worthless
xboxs break. . . alot... ps3s dont
So. . . if you like single player games.. go ps3... if u like the online stuff. . . go xbox... longetivity? ps3.

how can people like the 360 controller over the ps3? sure its more comfortable... but the dead zone on the 360 joysticks is HUGE compared to the ps3... i'm twice as accurate and twice as fast at aiming on a ps3 controller. . . . that said 360s live is WAAAAY better than ps3s. . . i own both and i buy all my popular multiplayer shooting games for 360 because the live is better and that is what my friends get and we do alot of 360 lan games..... but i buy most my single player games for ps3 because I prefer the controller and because my ps3 isn't going to break on me and always runs smooth... . . . my first xbox died after about 4 months... i sent it in and it took them 3 months to get me a new one... i plug in the new one they sent me and its graphics card is broken... i still havent sent it back in because its probably just going to take them another 3 months to get me a new one....

I own both consoles.

The 360 had a lot of hardware issues but it seems to be significantly improved over the past year with the new jasper models. In nearing my 3 years of use on the 360, I've only had one break on me and it lasted a year.

No question, online is better on the 360, despite the subscription, Live is a very superior online service to the PSN.

PS3 does have blu-ray which is a huge plus, and free online.
Xbox's netflix streaming is nice, and the online is great, especially if you have friends.

Honestly I would just go for the one that has more friends. If that is not a factor, decide which games you want to play more. Do you like Halo and Gears of War or Uncharted and Little Big Planet? Both games have strong exclusives.

Also another big factor is the controller. Which one is more comfortable to you will be important, personally I like the 360 controller better because it is bigger and has great triggers, but I still find the PS3's controller very usable.

Third party titles tend to look better on the 360 from easier programming, and some devs have trouble porting over to the Cell processor, but this gap seems to be closing as of lately.
