Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs interested me much more previously, but the more I see of the gameplay videos, the more I'm worried it'll end up as some semi-generic open world game with some minor, gimmicky additions.

same here...the more I see and read about it the less innovative and interesting it looks...maybe Ubisoft felt the same way

I think you've called Ubisoft out quite a lot over the years & they haven't exactly improved their image much. I'm very unhappy w/ their decision making since I really wanted to play Watch Dogs.

I haven't been as harsh on them as some others. The AC series, Clancy games...I buy those and enjoy them.

This kind of thing doesn't help them to be sure but you know what? If that game comes out next year and kicks ass no one will even remember this. ;)

I'm really hoping it does kick ass when it's released. I guess I'll be cleaning out my backlog for a while (or until a new game interests me).

The problem I think Watch Dogs has, like the AC games, is the "repetitive" natur ethey make.

You can already see this in Watch dogs with how you have to find the cell towers and get inside to "open" up an area, it's like the towers in the AC games.

It's just a reptitive as hell gimmick that pads out the gameplay instead of offering something more unique/better.

People like padded out gameplay. I lost my tolerance for it after AC2, but people still eat it up.

Far Cry 3 fell into the "padded gameplay" category for me...ten million collectibles and repeating the same missions over and over. It was fun once you did everything once, then it just got tedious.

GTA games are the same way once you beat them. Haven't really had an urge to go back and play them again. Same with Saints Row 3 and all the annoyingly difficult side missions.

And yeah, AC games beyond 2 were just BS...same thing over and over and over. If it weren't for the semi-interesting storyline I would have never finished any of them.

Goddamn Skyrim was equally as bad in that respect.

True, there were a lot of side quests and some of that "Radiant quest" nonsense that I didn't do because it was tedious. At least with Skyrim, though, you are still leveling up and getting better gear. In Far Cry 3, I guess there was a lot of close-range execute stuff you could do, but I never ended up using most of them because like 90% of the world was open grass fields where the guys would just see you anyway. So after you get all the guns, that's pretty much it. Not to mention that getting upgrades in Far Cry 3 was tedious as hell with all the hunting.

I think the last game I continuously went back to, immediantly after completing the storyline, were the first 2 fallout games. I honestly can't remember going back to any game as much as those two.

Those two have a permanent spot on my harddrive.

Yeah, Farcry had some of that terious bullshit, but I felt like it might be a great diving point. The ability to light fires and use that to your advantage (like in Farcry 2) was a good idea, and I'd like to see some expansion of that. I'd love to reverse-pickpocket a sausage link into an enemy's pocket and watch them get ripped apart by hungry wildlife. Yeah, wildlife did that on your own, but it would be cool to be like "Aw yeah, I told them to do that."

the first 2 Fallout games that came out in 1997 and 1998 or the last 2 games Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

Oldschool son. '97 and '98

I enjoyed the latter 2 (hell I even liked Brotherhood of Steel, not the bullshit console one) but none of them come close to the nestalgia and gametime I've gotten from the first two

new 14 minute gameplay demo...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECC38TkgRDg#t=873

this is the best gameplay footage I've seen thus far...the vehicle section and the player invasion aspect looked interesting...reminds me of a Deus Ex: Human Revolution meets GTA combo...still not sure how the individual aspects will work within an entire game structure but am definitely intrigued

Bit unfair with the static camera but let's not pretend like this game isn't waaaaay off target. Waaaaaay off.

EDIT: 2013 possibly prev-gen. Compare the 2012 against what they released today instead (waaaaay off)

I had this pre-ordered for a while, but when the delays came I canceled it. I will be taking a look at reviews before I buy this.

It's entirely possible that it's Wii U/Ps3/Xbox 360 footage Vs PS4/Xbone/PC footage there.

The new media (italian preview thingy) doesn't look better. All the lightning looks flat, and nothing seems to remain of the dynamic elements of the scene (wind, rain, smoke, debris). The things that look a little better than the others are all probably cut scenes.

That's confirmed PS4 capture BTW.

Painted on doors, painted on windows that are magically matte black, assets that don't cast shadow when they should.

But most I'm disappointed with the lighting. Was this the game they came out and said the goal was to have it look the same on every platform? Congratulations on 360-era lighting on the PC then. The patient died on the table that day.

Wow, then what the hell happened? This is like Aliens: CM all over again.

Show "gameplay" with great real time lighting/shadows and textures then release is flat lighting with not nearly as much dynamic lighting or as good textures/details.

I don't think we're necessarily looking at an apples-to-apples comparison here. Is the 2013 footage simply showing a 'cleaner' section of the map with no wind, less foot traffic and debris only off-camera?

I'm so fucking tired of baked lighting.

Old media for comparison:

Yeah yeah we get it, all lies. But c'mon. Ubi have had 2 years times 100-200 people. And this is the result?!

All media shamelessly lifted from the NeoGAF thread.

Wow, if it looks like that now I am seriously disappointed.

Hopefully that is the PS3/X360 footage or something.

that 'new media' shot doesn't look like any video I've seen from the game...the video I've seen looks a lot better...now it doesn't look anywhere near the way it should based on the insane system requirements but I wouldn't judge the game based on a few 'altered'? screenshots

Are you seriously comparing lighting from an entire collection of ANIMATED NIGHT scenes to one STILL image from a DAYTIME scene? Not necessarily all on the same platform?

Kind of a bummer that they had to scale it down. He says the game will scale up nicely on PC, so there's that at least. It sounds like he's just talking about graphics and not the pedestrians and cars they had to cut out. The game looks like fun otherwise though. I'll just wait and see what the reviews say once it's released.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/6/5474064/watch-dogs-pc-ps3-ps4-xbox-360-xbox-one-release-date

"So it's the same storyline," he said. "It's done by the same team, so it's not a separate team in another continent that was (making one of the versions). So, same storyline, same gameplay, all the same mechanics, innovations. All the same missions, if you want, the same world.

"Obviously what's different, is that we're scaling the dynamism and the detail of the city and the gameplay. So it's stuff like the amount of civilians in the street, the amount of cars in the street, the detail in the animation, or how sophisticated some reactions are to some of your actions. So some of those things are scaled down. Obviously the graphics, but that one's obvious."

Guay said he's very happy with what the team has been able to do on the PS3 and Xbox 360, especially in the past six months.

"There were some of our features where it was a challenge to be sure that we had feature parity, especially some of the things that we're doing online," he said. "But at the end of the day we're able to hit that on all the core animations that we're doing in Watch Dogs."

In terms of PlayStation 4 versus Xbox One versions of the game, Guay says they're so similar that he sometimes has to check the controller or the UI to figure out which platform is running the game.

"It pretty much looks alike," he said. "You know, I get fooled. You can't really tell just from the image."

And the PC version scales based on the sort of computer you're running it on, though the team made the decision "not too scale down too much," Guay said.

"I mean you can always say we support a 10-year-old PC and then it's barely playable, but that's ugly," he said. "It's not really what people want to play. We didn't do that. We didn't go there. We said, ‘OK, we advertise that at the recommended setting it's going to be a good experience. It's going to look good, it's not going to look like a 10-year-old game.' So we're not going to support very old PCs. If you have very powerful PCs, then it'll scale up, and it scale up to even higher resolution, obviously, than you can have on PS4 or Xbox One. So you can have, in theory, a version that will look spectacular if you have that big screen, that high resolution capability. The game looks great on PC."

One of the reasons that's true is because development on Watch Dogs actually started for the PC first.

"When we started developing, the PS3 existed, the Xbox 360 existed, and we kind of suspected, maybe, there might be other platforms eventually," he said. "So, because we thought that would happen we chose the PC as our first target to have when we started developing Watch Dogs so that we have the flexibility to adapt to a different platform. So we were able to support 360 and PS3, but we could scale up with other platforms and to other video in the meantime, which we now know is the case. So PC has always been around for us. Sometimes it's a last-minute port of sorts. For us, it's been around since we started."

Development shifted to the next-gen consoles once the PS4 and Xbox One were announced, and then in the last eight months or so a dedicated team returned to the PC to hammer out the final details of that platform's version of the game, he said.

"So we end up having the best of both worlds basically," he said. "We're able to have good usability on PC and on console."

NO I WATCHED THE FUCKING VIDEOS DID YOU?

Jesus.

Both the italian AND the regular trailer they put out today looks sooo flat in the non-cutscene parts. Look at 1:23 in the standard trailer (he's on top of a train). The scene looks so dead...

Maybe it's PS3 footage. Here's to hoping. Makes sense, companies usually promote their new game using the worst looking version, right?

why do developers always move away from PC as the lead platform?...didn't DICE do that with BF4 or BF3 as well?...I thought the next-gen consoles would make it easier to develop on PC and port down to consoles

"There's no scale down in quality, especially the next-gen versions," Morin said, discussing some of the negative reaction to recent trailers with us at Eurogamer Expo this afternoon. "It's pretty much the opposite. What we showed at E3 2012 in a lot of respects was less good. I think it's in the details. So no, there's no scale down." -- http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/watch...wn_since_reveal_creative_director_claims.html

So there you have it. These are not the droids you are looking for. Nothing to see here, carry on.

A dynamic day/night cycle kind of precludes the possibility of exterior lightmaps.

this game could go either way...very disappointing or very innovative...all that stuff in the trailer looks cool in small doses but I can't see it lasting for an entire game...it'll get old quick

Wow. That's really the only word I can use to sum up how I feel about that comparison. Wow.

Haha which makes you wonder WHY there would even be footage from those dinosaurs at all until after release day. I'm not a graphics-is-everything whore, but goddamn that is just disgusting. If it looks that drastically different then I have to ask why you'd even consider the old consoles at all.

That's just insulting to the 2012 potential.

Let's just wait until the release, I'm sure they wouldn't just lop off effects from the PC version.
