The Secret World

I played all day yesterday. Well, 5 hours.. that's enough for me to determine if I like it or not.

I was going to get Darkfall, but saw gameplay footage on that and it looks like crap imo.

Defiance will have to hold me over until the other MMO's that are coming out this year.

Just cancelled my membership. I haven't played that game in ages. It's fun, but it isn't calling out to me, and I just don't have the drive to play it at the moment. Did they improve the combat? It seemed interesting but it feels bland after a while. That last statement is puzzling since I loved Borderlands 2 and I played as a Beserker which doesn't really do a whole lot aside from dual weilding weapons with wacky ass perks. I think BL2 just has better presentation when it came to combat, or maybe I just favored that style of gameplay at the time. In any event, I stopped handing my money over to Funcom.

By the way, I thought this game was going F2P, was that just a rumor?

I'd definitely say it's worth getting if you don't mind repetitive combat.

That' sthe main drawback tot he game as a whole, combat is not that fun.

However the game has a great setting, the atmosphere is very well done, the storylines are for the most part great and well written, characters, etc.

It also does some "adventure" game like quests which sets it apart from other mmo's, where you really have to find clues and solve puzzles, etc. Feels more like an adventure game at times then just an mmo (though there are still your usual "go kill x/fetch y" quests in there too).

The skill system to the game is very open, there's no picking a class and being "Stuck" in one specific pigeon holed role. You are free to mix and match skills and make your own unique character however you want.

So if you are interested in a horror themed mmo and can get past he combat and enjoy hte storylines/characters, I'd say yes.

Does anyone know if they're still allowing people to try the game with Buddy Keys? If so, does anyone have a key they wouldn't mind giving me? :D

I'd love to try this game out but @ $15 it's just a few bucks over what I want to pay just to 'try it out'. I suspect this may be a good game to play with my wife since she'll enjoy the adventure elements but if the overall game-play feels clunky then she'll dismiss it entirely.

I would agree with this 100%. Combat wasn't anything unique but it isn't all that bad either. The atmosphere and quests are some of the best in the genre imo.

I bought it. The layout and skill/quest stuff seems a bit clunky, but that might just be because I'm new to it.

I have an Aleister Crowley quote tattooed on my arm in HP Lovecraft's handwriting though. So....I think I'm predisposed to like this game, haha!

The questing stuff does feel clunky at the beginning, since it is vastly different than every other MMO. This game is not a "quest hub" game. By that I mean, you do not load up on every quest you can find and then complete them, and then move on to the next area. This game is a "take a quest, and see where it takes you" kind of game. That's why you are limited so much in how many quests you can have at a time -- 1 Story, 1 Main Quest, and 3 Side Quests

What I recommend is following the main quests to completion, and pick-up and complete the minors you find as you go.

I sent you a pm if you hadn't checked yet, can send you a buddy key , just need an email to send it to.

I like what they were trying to do with getting rid of a leveling system, but it would be kinda nice to know if I'm looking at a person that has sunk 500 hours into the game or someone who just installed it.

I think the combat seems really simple at first, but the more you play it, the more you see that there's more to it. There's no power creep.

I checked it out again on a buddy pass and even though there was just the 50% off Steam sale the starter area seems like totally empty. Glad I didn't pay for it.

The starter missions are instanced IIRC.

Most players will be found in the major capital cities (London, NY,etc) and the portal area that you travel to all the various locations, those are usually chalk full of people.

the way the game is designed

it doesn't really encourage people to create alts

the only reward is either because someone really enjoyes the gameplay and likes leveling from the beginning again or to get a feel for the different faction story which is different but only represents a fraction of new story content while leveling up again

If anyone wants to play lemme know. I'm about 50 missions in.

I haven't tried Polaris yet, I'm kind of nervous. I don't think i'm geared up very well. I have two quests that want me to go to New York, but I feel like I should finish off everything in Kingsmouth first and do Polaris. Is this a good idea?

Also, I've been pumping all my SP into Pistols. Do you guys level up 2 weapons at first?

you level up two weapons otherwise you aren't playing the game correctly

Polaris is not hard

The way the combat system is setup you want to focus on two weapons, if you are just putting your points into pistols and nothing else then you aren't going to be getting the benefits of the combat system and how it works with the "Build up resources" skills then consumers.

There are many synergies with different weapons and finding two that work well together is the best thing. As one weapon can b uild up resources for the other weapon. So when you use a consumer, you use it twice for each weapon and maxing your dmg potential.

More good info in this thread:
http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=66643

Also keep in mind, you do NOT need to "re-roll" in this game, unlike other games you can't "mess up" a build and the nature of the how the game is built you can still change your character without "gimping" yourself.

It's built so you can experiment and change your mind if you want, as there is no Skill point limit (you can eventually learn everything if you put in the time).

Also it's worth mentioning that passives from various trees still work without having the proper weapon equipped. So you can get a little inventive with your specs.

Ahh...fuck haha. I think I'm going to try Blood Magic and pistols. So, if I have a focus thing and pistols equiped it will just auto switch to whatever weapon is needed by the skill I use? I didn't realize that...

Yep... TSW is one of the most flexible and theorycraftable MMORPG's of the last several years. There are huge benefits to doing so and the power creep is relatively minimal at the top end. I completely maxed out my character from the raid and was one of the major leech healer theorycrafters on the boards (as well as considered one of the best dps/leechers in the game) before quitting shortly a bit before Issue 6 due to the slow pace of development and how poorly Fusang was running.

It wasn't that the game wasn't good, but I just had basically done all of the nightmares a hundred+ times each and slaughtered the raid, master planner achievement for the NM's early on as well as Warchitect, tip-top gear, and played with a million specs and all the game had to offer). Also, having bought the lifetime sub for $200 then paid $40 for the box fee, it was a sting to see the game become $10-20 with no subscription fee such a short time later, which turned me off of Funcom big time.

I don't know the current state of the game or if things have been nerfed into the ground by now, but there was a decent amount of fun to be had with the nightmares etc. and they were fun to re-play for a long while. The combat system is deceptively simple-looking when actually being extremely deep.

While I can understand how it can hurt to shell out the money for lifetime subs to only have hte game go non-sub, if they didn't do that they probably wouldn't even have as many players or money to keep development going.

The entire mmo market has largely shifted to f2p and almost any new mmo is going to route, people just aren't shelling out the money for sub fees like they used to , especially when there are decent f2p mmo's out there for them to play.

From a business perspective Funcom made the right move.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I know they made the right choice given the state of the game and market. I just felt burnt by it ;). That's why I tried to make it clear I thought the game was good overall in that post. I'm actually glad to see TSW has gained a good reputation and from the official boards, a nice amount of players... the devs were certainly trying and I don't have any ill will or anything with them or the game itself.

Valentine's Day is coming to The Secret World!

Man, I haven't played this in awhile. I got through most of the issues I think. Up to 7 or 8. I enjoyed this game for the story more so than the grinding dungeon aspect. The PvP was meh.

I dunno any other game that has fleshed out Lovecraft and various occult/conspiracy themes this well.

Yeah I enjoyed the game for awhile. The atmosphere and story I thought were top notch. Might fire it back up for a play through again

I just started playing again casually to unlock more uniforms and really dive into the quest story lines. I forgot how good those aspects are in this game. I dare say that it has the best questing system in any RPG, MMO and single player included.

Game has been remastered as "The Secret World Legends". Still free to play. I believe that they have taken all the story content from the original game and better integrated it into the game. At least the tutorial level is helluva more interesting. ;)

If you have an old account, you must download the OLD game and spend your bonus points on cosmetic stuff like pets and clothes. Then make sure that you have gotten everything out of the delivery tab from the cash shop and then open all gift boxes etc. Make sure that you have learned all the pets and stuff in your inventory!

If you don't do it the right way, your stuff will not transfer over to the new game! If you have GrandMaster status you have permanent patron status in the new game! There are more thorough instructions in the FAQ. Follow them! I think you have until the beginning of August to transfer your character's stuff.

I haven't gotten very far; I ended after the blowjob and subway mission in the tutorial. Still a very fun game!

GoldenTiger Don't forget to transfer your character!

Thanks for the heads up! I'll have to do the transfer thing soon, though I'm currently playing eso. EDIT: I miss leech healing though, and eso has kinda been boring to me lately. Maybe I'll land here for awhile....

Shame the new account page wont accept my old account login info even though I can still log into the old account page just fine......

this looks interesting. how is it for single players? I hate draggin down others in mp...
might need to make some room for it.

Took mine just fine. ;)

I was able to log into my account page just fine, but not into the game...

Did a password reset and now both work. Doesn't make sense, but oh well.

Game seems to run a lot worse than it did before. Not a fan of the new tutorial section at the start. I miss the old game where my top of the line Templar was like a god..... ;) Though I paid for a lifetime sub back at launch of the original game so still have my patron status if I were to start all over again from scratch.

I may play through it again and see if they kept the first town like it was. The atmosphere there used to be amazing.

Just wish it ran better than it does now.

Granted I played a long time ago, but the game is an EXCELLENT single player or small group title. There is a lot of emphasis on story missions, including some "puzzle" type missions that require some actual problem solving and encourage you to use the in-game browser to search for clues. For instance, directions to complete a quest might be in ancient Nordic runes or whatnot, so to figure out what they're spelling you can google for a rune translation etc. When you do play multiplayer, though there were a few places where it was PVP, the vast majority of PVE was designed (aside from obvious hard/nightmare mode dungeons/raids etc) so that you won't have to worry too much about dragging down others if you play even moderately well. There is a wide, wide variety of "perks decks" and you can eventually learn to master every type of weapon etc... so you have plenty of flexibility to play and build the way you want. I hear they've polished this even more for Legends, as well as many other fixes and whatnot.

Oh the only thing that irked me in TSW that I really hope they either have, or will fix in Legends is a graphics/animation issue - 3 of the weapon "types" Elemental, Chaos Magic, Blood Magic use focus items for their equippable weapon. This is okay, but unfortunately they are completely inert in combat Elemental used sort of a "voodoo doll" that was stuck on your hip no matter what and was the least annoying of the 3 to me. Chaos Magic stuck a "disc" / mask or other item on your back that just...sat there during combat. Blood Magic was the most annoying because their weapon type were primary "books"...stuck to your back! The whole thing seemed such a waste, especially Blood Magic, when they could have created animations where you either held the book that opened when you went into combat mode, or failing that had it float in front of you and emit arcane sigils and whanot, if they didn't want to mess with existing hand animations. All 3 weapon types could have done with more "active" weapons in combat, to give them parity with all the others (ie If you used Pistols or Swords, when you used your combat skills it showed an animation using that particular sword or pistol being used etc)

I figured I would check it out but I also seem to have the issue where my login only works on the old page. I even reset my password to see if that helped. I then tried to create a new account, but of course my email and username are in use.

I've not played for quite a long time - do you know what the policy is regarding Collector's Edition content for later Issues (ie Issue 9 - 12 etc)? In terms of cosmetics porting over? Does that stuff "count" for porting over to Legends? If not (or even if so) will there be another way to buy or earn it in Legends, or is it gone forever?

My original TSW account has the maximum amount of bonus points (7200 I think, plus a bunch of Veteran points) that I could go spend on various things, but I want to make sure I spend it smartly. I';ll reinstall original TSW for all this of course. Are you aware of any items that would be extremely worthwhile to buy in original TSW because they cost a ton more / are not available otherwise in Legends? I'm guessing some things like the Master / GrandMaster clothing (ie both snakeskin jackets), the Black Watchmen hoodies, etc.. and things like that are among those that will not be granted in Legends at all if you don't port them over, but in those particular cases they are not something you can just buy anyway.

Also, reading over the Legacy Transfers page it seems that if you are interested in making sure your clothing 'counts' for import for both male and female avatars you... have to have a character of each try it on? I played earlier on before the latter dressing room etc.. so I wanted to check. Do you just have to preview it on a male / female model, or do you actually have to have a female avatar etc...? I don't really anticipate ever playing a female character so this is a secondary issue, but if I am transferring things over I want to do it right.

I really really wanted to play this game. Spent 6 hours downloading it at the relaunch and threw up before I made it through the tutorial missions. I just can't play FPS syle games, they make me sick as hell and I really wish I could because this game looks awesome. :(
