The official Red Orchestra 2 thread

Maybe the PPSh-41 does seem to have a little too much recoil. The MP40 seems alright.

Maybe they wanted it to be a little more balanced. In real life the Germans did capture PPSh-41s and use them for themselves due to their superior reliability, drum magazine, and higher rate of fire for CQ.

I don't like too many of the gun sounds in the game, especially the MG34 and the StG44 prototype, they just sound too weak or like toys.

Pretty sure this game doesn't even have a real campaign. I tried the first mission and it was literally the multi-player map with 12 bots.

I think there is a memory leak somewhere.. After playing for about an hour, my game starts running like crap, forcing me to quit and restart.. :(

I like this sort of gameplay a lot more than I do other FPS, so I like the game so far.

My only real issue with it is that it seems that only a few of the maps are really polished and interesting. Apartments, barracks, grainelevator are very good maps.

On the other hand, there are maps like spartanovka (sp?), station and commissarhouse which I've yet to see the allies win, and more importantly the gameplay isn't that interesting.

You sound like some dude from Hard[OCP], you know, the elitist website were everything is tri SLI, dual power supplys and gaming resolutions that would make an alien race jelous? LOL! My point is and this is very, very valid, the gaming resolution that your monitor is native too is not properly used for PC gaming. Game makers are not sitting at there PC's thinking about 2560x resoutions. So all you did when you bought that monitor is paid for your own compatability problem. Yes, you paid for that, now enjoy the problem!!

This is fact, this is reality. Blaming video games for this just shows how imature you really are. Ignorence is bliss I guess...

Who is this guy? Haha, not properly used!

Yeah, I have to agree with you 100%. I love this type of game. There are a few maps that are just a ton of fun but a few of them are just awful.I just played a map called Fallen fighters or soldiers and it was awful.

Once more people know a little better what maps that they want rotating the game should it will weed these out. Then there is always custom maps.

Yea, Fallen Fighters is horrible, I usually just right through the middle off the start.. Then it becomes a snipe fest..

Most of the maps (if not all, I'm not sure) are based on real battlefields and places.

There's a thread here on the Ro forums showing pictures of real places, like the Grain Elevator and Pavol's house, etc, it's insane how much detail TWI got into them (they were some of the first Western people to be allowed inside some of them, like the Grain Elevator).

http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=63832

I like spartanovka, the in and out between all the houses is fun and the little gulley that you can use to sneak up around the side and get behind the enemy line.

There's just something I find thrilling about doing that that many other maps don't have. When you're all alone sitting behind the house and about 5 enemy guys come running around without seeing you, and you bring up your sights and start popping them off, hoping no one notices you.

Just bought this on steam and can't wait to try it out. Must say however, that this is the first and last time I will buy a game on Steam. 800KB/s for an 8GB download??? Pffff, never again.

On spartanovka the cap areas are too big to be defended in any meaningful way, and the map is too narrow, making it a dream for commanders and artillery. I've yet to see a single round of spartanovka where the axis lose, and where the top scoring players on both teams is not the commander through artillery.

Must be your connection, I always get max speed with Roadrunner Turbo Plus... fastest ISP in my area(20Mbps).

Does this game have a FFA game type?

 You mean DEATHMATCH like its called in every other fps.

No, this is a team based game. This doesn't have a deathmatch much like DOD:S doesn't have a deathmatch. It does have a team deathmatch though.

Its an interesting idea and all but it is a video game. To me balance is more important than any sort of realism.

In Fallen Soldiers its just a big open field. In the game that I played it was just two team on each side on their bellies waiting for anyone to try and push. When they did it was lights out. What a boring campfest that was.

Isn't there a covered path down the left (russians)/right (germans). In the beta you could easily flank round the side under cover then shoot whoever from behind. Running across the big open area is generally a bad idea.

In a 32 player map its easy enough to camp that one choke point.

Play with your location settings. That used to work for some people, not sure if it still does. I always manage to get around 1.5mbs using the location I should be using.

That's what almost all other games do, I just find it more interesting to fight on places where the actually really did fight. The whole "asymmetrical/balanced" map phase gets old to me, and that's what many mp focused fps do to "Balance" it out.

In the Grain Elevator for example, just a handful of Russians held that against 10x more German infantry + tank support while having hardly any supplies or food/water.

I do agree that many maps it seems the Russians hardly ever win though.

The one think I think they need to do is to limit the artillery where you can't bomb spawn area's.

Stalingrad was a huge battelfied. They could easily choose the more interesting/balanced areas.

Your example is actually a perfect one. Grain elevator is one of the better balanced maps, given all the ways the germans can get to the top and flank the russians. That is a fun map given all the different choke points, and the strong disincentive for germans to sit back and camp. If germans sit back and camp they'll be destroyed, but they can easily flank the russians, making it for fun firefights.

I setup a server, can you guys tell me if it works and how it feels

EDIT: Will be up again tomorrow.

My server is up again, can you see if they can connect please?

Try changing your download server in the settings. By default mine is set to Seattle which is closest to me being in SW canada, however often I get double or more the speed from say 700kbps to 1.5-2Mbps by changing to a server in LA or elsewhere in California. Sometimes I get the full speed from the closest server as well, I guess it depends on the load from sales and new game launches. It would be nice if steam would automatically connect to the fastest server though.

You want just you and your friend to play against bots? You guys can't join a server or better yet start your own?

I might just run my own server.

I need to hop in and see if its worth messing with yet, havent actually gotten to play it at all

might just be me but finding the final release version to be buggier than beta. Sound crashes, and some strange crashes here and there.

Yeah there's some nasty bugs. I've played 2 hours so far and I had the sound die once and the server browser killed my internet connection three times so far.

I hear that you can run a listen server via console commands. I would start a thread at tripwire forums. I'm sure that someone will help you out.

Ok this shit is "shelved" until they get things sorted out. I can no longer play online, every time I try to connect to a server it kills my internet connection. Worked just fine for a couple hours straight.

^^ sucks for you man. It's unfortunate how buggy the game is. I'm glad Tripwire didn't charge full price, but this game should have been delayed until it was polished further after the beta. Doing so would have been bad for a number of reasons, but the current state could be much better.

The issues I'm dealing with now are: stats and leveling system is FUBAR, keep getting a sound bug where my entire game will freeze for a second during gameplay (this used to crash RO before the previous patch, so it's an improvement), some servers I connect to immediately crash the game, my framerate doesn't feel as smooth as other games on high settings (mostly autodetected), most servers lag pretty bad, and various gameplay bugs that I'm sure everyone has run into.

The one thing that irks me most about this game is the shitty sound design. Most of the time I can't even tell if I'm being shot at until I'm dead or the ground is kicking up around me. Still can't tell the rifles apart, but usually can with the MGs/SMGs. It's really frustrating to come from Darkest Hour where the sound is much better (at worst, more consistent than RO2) and my situational awareness is greatly improved as a result. DH also has a better suppression system. Can't wait until the Pacific mod launches

Eh? I find the sound quite good. Especially when you're indoors and hear people moving around, the way the sound carries through the broken down apartments, etc.

The Rifles are easy to tell apart, maybe it's coming from RO:eek:st where I'm used to it more, but the G41 for example has that very noticeable "Crack/pop" sound that's a lot different then the SVT that is more of a usual bang for a rifle.

I don't know why people keep saying these things. The game runs great for me and has very few bugs from what I can tell. I also think it is one of the better looking games out right now.

It may run great for you but there are many people having a great deal of problems. We aren't making this shit up.

I did manage to play again using the Steam server browser, the in-game one is what kept killing my connection. Whats really pissing me off now is that the sound goes dead randomly. Amazingly, I haven't had many graphics issues, and I do agree that this is one of the better looking games there is right now.

It may run well for you, but many people can't play at all. I can launch the game, but the minute I get passed the loading screen or single-player intro, it crashes to the desktop. I've submitted my dump files and scowered the support forums for a solution, but nothing yet. I'd love to be able to play... :(
