This and get yoru ass under level 20 and find diamonds.

Diamond pick and lots of cobble within an hour most likely. At the very least a full set of iron.
 
that sounds great and all, but can't we just skip that and get straight to digging?

Seriously though there is an art to getting diamond and I can within about an hour of starting on a new level get at the very lease a diamond pick axe if I actually play and don't dick around. If you guys would like on the new server I can make a diamond mine since I'm quite sure I'm good enough to this now and we can use it as a community place.
 
I've spent the time since we first decided how to handle the 1.7-1.8 transfer working on my warehouse of materials for my new build in the new world. I have been working on this exclusively for weeks.

With the decision to all of a sudden wipe it all completely with no REAL poll or anything I find myself displeased. I probably not join you all in the new world.
 
I think we need our materials from the old map on the new map, especially if we make it small in size to begin with. If we don't, every resource in the spawn area will have been pillaged before we expand for 1.9.

Hopefully the starter pack will be enough to stop all of the resources from being depleted before 1.9.

i think this is a very good point. we will need materials if the starting area will be small area.
 
Here's a solution that should make everyone happy

how about those who want the "start kit which includes tools" get it, while the ones who DO NOT WANT IT, start with nothing, and this way everyone gets what they asked for?

Sounds reasonable to me.

So did you guys decide to make the map smaller to begin with for 1.8 and expand it for 1.9 so we can have snow or are we just saying screw snow?

Also, there's a link to a poll a few pages back, but I doubt many people saw it.

You bring up a good point. But 1k x 1k, while sounding small, is still a decent size. I don't see it being a HUGE problem in getting resources.

The only problem with that there are plugins that easily give people everyone items on their first login. If we don't do it that way, it would mean an admin (me) going in and modifying the users file of each user wanting the materials and using a program like INVedit to add the items.

That is considerable more work.

If we said screw snow, we've be making the world MUCH larger to begin with. There are going to be a few additional biomes added in 1.9, not just snow. Not to mention any other updates world related that we haven't been told about. So this is giving us wiggle room until then.

Are you building something out of diamond blocks? Because if all you're going to use them for is to mine and dig and clear out areas, diamond tools are not needed.

Also, obsidian can be created in place. All you need is some lava and water. Easy peazy lemon squeezy.

The point is that I mined them out which took forever to get that many! And it for both Dyn and myself. I only ever use Diamond tools, and without having an add that will let you repair I use them. Plus for armor! the diamonds do get used between the two of us especially.
 
I just want a diamond axe, pick, and shovel, or just the diamond pick and shovel, I can handle the rest.

Not me, I like to mine and make a big room, then some big hallways, and then finally go further down there.

I don't just automatically go all the way down to bedrock and start slinging my axe around lol.
 
I make a ladder or staircase to level 11 or 12 and then make a room then branch off from there

how to survive your first day:

1) make a wood axe and chop trees until you have stacks of wood.

2) go underground and dont come up until you run out of wood. :)
 
Sorry BB. But I have no sympathy for you and your lost material any more. Your point that you "lost" that time. Well we all did. But to horde that much diamond to create only tools and armor. Well you can use stone and iron for that no problem. Iron is not significantly slower then diamond.

And if your other "rare" material is obsidian, which can be created in place, on demand... Well again, no sympathy. Sorry BB.

You can feel any way you want, I could careless. And it isn't just those items. It is also Glowstone, Spawners, Sponge when we could make sponge, records, six or seven chests of gunpowder, ice blocks, and have lots of wool I have been saving up. I don't know what you use diamonds for but I like to keep a lot in stock cause when i build I have to make at the least 3 tools per build when gathering items. I have used other tools and sorry but they suck. You have to replace them a lot quicker than diamond, which is why I like using diamond tools.
 
Here's the rub; besides what, just the sponge? All those items can be created, harvested, or mined in a quick enough time period. I know you spent all that time. Many people did just the same, and will still be losing those items. What is it that you're building that needs ALL that material?

The reason I'm arguing so much with this is because you're acting like you're the only person that's collected material. The only one that's losing material. You're not. WE ALL ARE. we're all starting from scratch. You're also forgetting that this is a BETA. And as such, you could lose your material at any time.
 
There is zero reason to not allow people to move items. It hurts nothing. If people don't want to move stuff, they don't have to.
 
Actually. That's not true at all. One big reason is that one of two people, myself or G1 have to configure that.

Look. Let's just drop it. We'll figure out what we're doing, and when it's time, do it.

I just tested and it is indeed possible. I had a diamond pickaxe and shovel in under an hour (more like 45 minutes since it was about 1 episode of Bones on Netflix).
 
wouldnt it be easier to just make a short list of crap you want moved and then have a mod/admin give you that stuff? like setup a deadline to have a list of what you actually have and want moved and then have it handed out whenever?

no plugins
no multi server

Meh. I don't need anything. I actually look forward to starting fresh. Honestly I look forward to working in a much smaller map near everyone else. we could build a killer city! We could even hand out jobs! I want to build a central warehouse heh. I also want to be a part of any kind of "public transportation" system we build (riverway/railway)

I'm still willing to host, but any time investment on my part on the server was incredibly miniscule to that of other people on the server. Whatever they all decide I'm good with.
 
It's not that we don't want todo any work, it's that we 1) are already doing a lot of work for this. 2) don't have the time to actually do half the things being suggested. Especially that last one. Every single person will then be saying they had a double chest full of diamond block stacks. And if they aren't lying, that means we need to give each person allthete stuff I game. Do you not realize how much work that is? To repeat that for 20+ players, while making sure plugins are working correctly, and managing other aspects of the server will take forever.

This isn't a full time job you know?

All I want is a trusty diamond pick, axe, and sword, I don't think that's a lot to ask for, it's not like I'm asking for half the map to be taken with me to the new one.

you know if you guys don't have the time to do anything then why not appoint someone who has the time to do the stuff?
 
Are you all really going to argue over this? I have a lot of material saved up that I won't get to use, but you know what? I don't care. I would rather start fresh in a new world and build my way from the ground up. Materials are a lot easier to find in 1.8 due to mineshafts and many more caves, and to be honest some people bringing over a lot of items while others don't will just be defeating the purpose of survival mode. I don't want to step on others toes but I'm getting really tired of checking this thread and finding people going back and forth on things that don't really matter.

Like I've said before this is still a game in beta, and changes happen, get used to it.

The server is up for me.
I like the idea of a new 1.8 map! When discussions first was talked about the new 1.8 map
I was against the idea, I was kinda like Babyblue, and Dynamic. Before I actually got to play
on the 1.8 test server, I had changed my mind about it. Here is why, 1: Minecraft is Beta, 2: A fresh start seemed like a good idea, 3: I would have a chance to build better structures, 4: I couldn't possibly expect to keep my stuff, and the old map forever.
Updates change a lot of things, in this case 1.8 changed stuff where if we were to expand, it would
look really ugly.
I'm guessing people who are interested in keeping their items forgot Minecraft is Beta, and for some,
who have had to start over like myself, it gets discouraging, but on the same note, it has been fun too. I am going to mine all over again, find what I need and be happy, so is others.
As for polls, I agree decisions are made then changed at the last moment, it's hard to make everyone happy, you make a few happy, then you are always going to have some who don't like it.
I am in favor of your idea Insom, please stick to your guns.
