Do you have to kill enemies with a weapon(sword or bow/arrow) in order for them to drop exp balls? I killed 2 skeletons and a zombie on the 1.8 test server but I used my fists, they still dropped their normal drops but I don't remember getting any exp balls. If that's the case, it seems a clever way to prevent grinders from being able to produce exp lol

Until updating to Pre2, I had XP orbs disabled on the server via a mod because of a bug. That bug has been fixed now.

Oh, so that's what those were. I had no idea. :)

Kind of shitty about the snow biomes. I was kind of wondering why I couldn't find one on my creative map.

Yeah dude, it actually has me really bummed.

I mean, what do we do? We keep our existing map and generate a bunch of new chunks and we'll end up with no space left for snow biomes. We do a new map and the same problem, so it doesn't really matter.

Either way 1.8 has basically broken biome generation and the only way to win is to not make new chunks until 1.9, which robs us of all the cool 1.8 stuff. Go figure!

Did you guys see the new lighting complaints at or right above bedrock? Basically, it means that slimepit on the other server is pretty much pitch black no matter how much light you put down there as the fog increases the lower you go.

Here's hoping Notch sees the disappointment and changes it before final.

Knowing notch, he'll probably roll a crit.

Also, nice to see vine growth was nerfed, I really was worried that it would be used as a griefing method.

Oh, and that memory leak in SSP was absolutely terrible. I ran out of memory in about 5 minutes, it ground the game to a halt just before it crashed.

why are either bothering to put out 1.8 if they broke a major function of the last many updates? I mean really....

If they want to add all the sorta useless 'adventuring' then wait till it is done before releasing it.

We were going to start a new world for 1.8 but obviously thats a stupid idea.

really doesn't matter when they release it, it would still take about a week for it to get to the point where we would run it, but that also depends on IF we want to run it... can just leave things the way they are now... run 1.8 on a temp server till 1.9 comes out I guess?

I agree; hold off 1.8 until all of the features that are now supposed to be 1.9 features (which are all basically 1.8 features that didn't make it in time) are finished. Keep releasing test versions as they have been, but don't put out a final version until all of the stuff they planned is finished.

There are so many important things in this update; leaving even a couple of them out makes it feel like a huge let down.

Yeah, let's just keep the temp server running until 1.9 is released. If NK is alright with it, that is.

I don't agree with this. That could take forever, and gives people little reason to play in the mean time, knowing that anything they do now would just be temporary.

I think we need a different solution. Perhaps limit the map to a really small size until 1.9 comes out so we could have plenty of room for snow biomes?

We still need to figure out if we're keeping the same map or doing a new one.. lol. Anyone who wants to use the old one should jump on the temp server and see how awesome the new biomes look. I was going to try to describe it's awesomeness, but it really speaks for itself. I think it's worth having a new map.

I'm leaning towards a whole new map upon 1.8/1.9 release anyway which means everything and anything would be temporary.

I can run the temp server for a while I guess, but I was just planning on running it until G1 got his Internet squared away so that he could have some relief. My monthly bandwidth cap annoys me, and MC uses a bit more than I expected. G1 can always put the temp server up on his end once his net gets fixed, though. So either way we've got a choice to make.

I'm not really sure what is best.

Obviously generating 1.8 chunks, or an entire new map, on the main server is undesirable given the latest information about biomes and what we already knew about NPCs. But at the same time, are people going to want to play 1.7 for some undetermined amount of time until 1.9?

It's all kind of a mess.

It is really easy for newer people to want a new map cause they are not as invested in the current map as the older players are. DG and a few others and Myself came up with a simple solution of just expanding the borders on the current map for when the updates are out (not a leaked version), It is the best solution cause once explored they will generate new stuff. And it will make all happy.

Expand NW for 1.8
Expand SE for 1.9

Looks like I'll be back on around 1.9 then.

Are we going to blow through your cap quickly? We can just move the Map to G1... or perhaps Old1e can you host yet? :)

Like I said... I'm new so I'll go with whatever you guys agree on.

Same!

I can't expand directions.... its distance from spawn in all directions. I can only expand evenly.

There are many "old" players willing and wanting to start over as well. In fact, only a fairly small minority are opposing a new world from what I can tell.

So we'll have the center of the world, with fairly uninspiring landscapes and all, then suddenly a beautiful "new" word on the outer edges with ravines, strongholds, new cave structures, rivers, awesome new biomes and everything else 1.8+ has to offer...

Let's not forget the number of abandoned, half completed builds, strip mined beaches, and blown apart landscapes in the original area as well.

Also, with 1.8 not generating snow biomes, that means in multiple stretches of the world it will just cut off from being snow to something else. An almost clean straight line of snow and then some other material.

In fact, do we even know how the world generates when expanding an existing world with new content? Are we suddenly going to have sheer cliffs where a mountain wanted to generate? I can see a lot of weird anomalies like that happening.

Sounds fun.

But whatever, the vocal minority will win over.

I personally don't reallly mind starting over. The fact that I continue to work on my massive bridge on the test server despite the fact that I know it'll be wiped out soon, should attest to that.

For me, the draw of minecraft has always been exploring and building in a new place. I'm constantly starting new SSP maps for that very reason.

I guess the question is: How big of a map makes the server unstable/slow etc?
If the map is now 3k X 3k (not sure if that is correct), is there any reason why it could not be 6k X 3k? I'm pretty sure there are ways to move the spawn (ideally to coordinates 3k X 1.5k), so expansion would be pretty easy. Just a thought...

Im one of the oldest player on Harcraft... only the host (ill and G1) are older than me. I dont mind a new world at all. The one we have at the moment is incredible... its a proof of how amazing our community is. I invested months(near 3) in the built of the memorial(with a lot of helps from many, insomn , dudewth and dogchainx) and i dont really mind saying goodbye to it ... why? cause i know what we have in front of us could/will be better ... when we all decide to move on, we will all talk about the memorial world with passion , and the new player that will join will never ever see.... just like hashland and our beloved pirate cove and corsair bay.

Have you played anything generated by 1.8 yet? The maps are a bit buggy at the moment with how things spawn, but the biomes and landscapes are beautiful in comparison to 1.7. Pretty much everyone in the test servers is in favor of wiping it and starting over.

I don't have a huge investment in the current server but I've spent a lot of time working on my house and other projects, and I have my void pit which I likely won't ever find again in a new map, but it will honestly look like crap if we try and expand things as is. Plus we can do a newer community area, which we could add walkways and a lot more space for people to do their builds while keeping them all connected.

You know, I wouldn't mind redoing the memorial on a new server. It took a LOT of work, but there are a lot of cool new blocks/features for the game.

This completely reminds me of when I was little and I had my sandbox. I built so many really cool things in it, but there's a time to wipe it clean and start anew. Besides, I'm sure we have plenty of photos/videos and could probably keep the old world saved as a file and distributed if anyone wanted to to take a real-peek of what that world was like.

On the new server I can see a mad-dash at a land-grab. Would be fun to compete to find some of the sweeter spots to build. I claim this land for SPAIN. :p

I don't really see any point in generating a bunch of new 1.8 chunks in a pre-existing world with such a major terrain feature like snow being broken, plus the lack of NPCs, bosses in strongholds, and whatever else. The other problem is that we can only expand the borders evenly, which means that if we only do a small 1.8 expansion in anticipation of 1.9, it will be a thin strip around the outside of the map.

And with the way things are in 1.8, a thin strip will not work. You need a lot of space.

I think our best options are: We either need to do a fresh map with 1.8, and keep it relatively small while we work on our spawn and core area, then go big for 1.9, or we need to sit on our current 1.7 map until 1.9 and expand then, in a big way, so that the messy business around the border of our old world is only a small portion of the map.

I don't think anyone wants a bunch of half-baked chunks and a bunch of tree-ring like circles around the map where the different versions connect sloppily.

I know it's a bitter pill for some to swallow, but Minecraft is a beta product in heavy development (perhaps not heavy enough) that isn't designed to be friendly to people who want to keep their worlds forever.

Our current world isn't going to last forever. It can't. Eventually expansion will make the world too big and ponderous, and people will have to go further and further from the spawn to find a decent place to build, and there will be all kinds of messy bits where new versions terrain comes into play. People will have to keep track of whats new land, whats old, and whatever.

Minecraft just isn't designed to be friendly to long-term persistant worlds. And even if people concede that we will need a new world at some point, what's the point of telling everyone else their desire for a fresh start is wrong just so we can put off the inevitable loss of our builds a couple of months?

I just want my resources. I have a warehouse full of stuff for a build I was planning.

I agree with this. If we have to start over then I wanna keep my resources that i have, I'm not really worried about the simple stuff. But the important stuff. Diamonds, Glowstone, stuff that is harder to get.

Some friends and I play on a server that I run.

We wanted to generate a new map a few months ago, so what I did was I created a portal at the spawn that linked to a portal on the old map. Yes, there were two completely different maps.

Before we generated the new map, I had everyone put all of the stuff they wanted to keep into chests. They could then teleport to the old world, get their stuff, and come back. After a week or so, I disabled the portal.

Would this not work for the [H] server?

Nicely put NK. In reality it is inevitable that a world refresh will happen. It's just a matter of when.

And Dog, I know I've mentioned before, I'd be more then happy to man the project of rebuilding the memorial. This time bigger and better. My time online is pretty much limited to just an hour or two late at night. But I'd be happy to help.

Arr4ws, I miss Pirate Cove and Corsair Bay :( And of course it goes without saying, Hashmang.

Seems reasonable. The whole reason we don't just run two worlds is that G1 wants to keep our server from being completely dependent on multi-world mods that might become unmaintained or whatever. But if it were a temporary solution to allow people to shuttle over some of their belongings... that might be an option.

While a completely fresh start would be cool, the fact is people would have a billion diamonds and other stuff within a week or two anyway. So not much is lost in the freshness factor by letting people bring over loot.

What does everyone think of this idea:

Temporarily run a smallish 1.8 world in parallel with 1.7 world. 1.7 world goes offline after a couple weeks or something. When 1.9 comes out, 1.8 expands to a larger size. We don't need a huge world to start since the area around spawn will keep people busy for a long while.

EDIT: On another note, anyone know where I an upload a 20MB PNG? :p

If there are no plans for an economy it doesn't really matter if people bring their stuff over.

I can host your PNG.
