The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

If I choose a world in the beta, will I have to use that one in the final game?

I don't know but that seems doubtful.

You can switch servers for a nominal fee - I'm trying to decide whether to jump in and play or hold off and try to get in with friends...

Hardware Compatibility

Display: the graphics-settings slider has only a minor impact on performance at this time.
We are currently optimizing Guild Wars 2, making ongoing improvements to the game’s frame rate. Presently, the game is CPU-bound on most high-end systems, so lowering graphics settings or upgrading your video card may not have a large impact on performance.
On older or lower-end machines, it is recommended that you try disabling reflections to improve frame rate.

I can confirm that disabling reflections makes a huge difference on fps

My friend and I wanted to go to Sorrow's Furnace but he is saying it's already super crowded and even though I tried to get on during lunch break, I couldn't. Might have to start looking at other servers :(

Definately check later tonight and try to pick an obscure server name. Playing in a high pop server sucks.

I never should of logged out. I wanted to create a new character, but I can't get back in now...

seen this announcement on the forums and i think im moving...its way to crowded... and i picked a random server too

Free and Unrestricted World Transfers

In order to test transfers and world balance, from Friday, April 27 at 15:00 PDT to Saturday, April 28 at 18:00 PDT, players will have free and unrestricted World transfers.

Forums came back, hopefully a good sign, first thing that came up was mentioning free server transfers for the weekend, which is good. Think I'm gonna bail on Crystal Desert and find a lower pop, I was on an overflow almost the entire time.

edit: yup server is back up for me

Server transfers are free for Friday and Saturday. They said they want to test the server transfers, but I think it's more because they're running into a lot of problems and this is the easiest solution to several at once.

Your server selection now has no effect on where you play after release. Everything will be totally wiped between now and then.

If there is an option to display FPS it will be in the options menu (F11) - probably in the main options, not in the graphics options. If it isn't there then it must not be available. That's where it was in GW1.

I'll be playing on Borlis Pass this evening if anyone wants to play with me. Might switch servers later. I should be online in ~40 min.

I'll paypal someone $10 if they let me use their account for a couple hours on the weekend. I want to play so bad. :(

point and click doesn't seem to do anything. You have a basic auto attack but that does it's thing weather you click or not. I play this the same way as any other MMO except you have to run around more. I have everything keybound.

I am not use to that... Do you use the arrows to walk or WASD?

It seems impossible to use 1-5 6-0, and F1-F4 as skills while useing WASD to move and Q and E to dodge and TAB to target....

Would love some setup advice...

Yeah they definitely have a lot of optimization to do. I have SLI off, getting about 25 fps at max settings, dips down to like 11-12 when there's a bunch of people around.

GTX 680 here, i7 920 o/c to 4.0ghz. ~20-40FPS, choppy, annoying, not the reason I bought a 680. Wonder how much optimization they can get in before beta ends?

Worst part is, since the 680 has the downclocking thing, its always running at like 300-450 mhz gpu clock, and very rarely goes up to 1000+. I assume the FPS wouldnt be any better if it stayed up higher, but one can only wonder. Blows my mind you cant force it to stay clocked higher just for peace of mind, I'd set it back to automatic after observing it for a while.

There is something really wrong with the client. It keeps changing the GW2.exe priority to low even when I have priority save on to normal with the program Prio. With the program running low it screws with my USB and everything, I get stuttering sound and my controls stop responding sometimes. Not sure why on Earth they would program this client to set force low priority. My CPU is doing virtually nothing while playing and I think that may have something to do with the extremely low FPS and low GPU utilization.

Arenanet states in its known issues FAQ that the game is CPU limited right now. Video card doesn't make much difference. I doubt there will be any optimization before the end of the weekend. I have a 7970 with a i5-2500k running at 2560x1600 with the settings maxed out and although it's not butter smooth, it's ok. Things are improving because it's much better today than it was several weeks ago so they are making progress.

lol CPU limited, my CPU is sitting there doing virtually nothing.

I'm just repeating what they said in their known issues:

Presently, the game is CPU-bound on most high-end systems, so lowering graphics settings or upgrading your video card may not have a large impact on performance. On older or lower-end machines, it is recommended that you try disabling reflections to improve frame rate.

Currently, adjusting the core clock speed of the GPU or CPU typically results in lower performance. It is advised that you leave core clock speeds at factory defaults.

AMD CrossFire™ and NVIDIA® SLI™ are not currently supported.

A or D double tap will dodge. I also set them to strafe. So either I use WASD to move and then click the ability bar or I would get a gamepad.

I actually have two Logitech G13 gamepads, one for each computer. So I use the thumbstick for all movement and I have the ability bar and other things keybound so I can use my fingers. Makes it much easier.

I'm on an i7920, mild overclock with 12gb and an ATI 5850. 1920x1200, everything at max with shadows off, no AA with no FPS issues. I turned off Depth of Field just because I don't like, didn't notice a performance change disabling that. Impressed with the engine so far. Very playable on my card. The latency though is a whole other issue. The servers are getting pounded.

As has been stated, the game is currently CPU bound. GPU isn't doing much. SLI isn't supported yet. However that doesn't mean it's going to max your CPU. It doesn't on my i7-920 or my sandy bridge 2600. And if it's not maxing mine it's certainly not going to max your faster cpu with an overclock. In fact the total overall utilization, when you have more to utilize, will look low to you.

As to the low priority and other issue you have, I am not seeing that.

Man, is it just me or do Necro's have like no range? Seems most of their stuff is melee range abilities + cloth = get slaughtered in WvWvW.

Having a good time but the combat is different that what i'm used to. They also need to tune some of the events. Too easy.

Almost ready! I currently have the client downloading. Excited to finally try it out.

Looks like I will be joining Darkhaven. Any major issues with that world? Any world in particular that you are noticing is more stable than others?

I can get into the PvP mini-games but not WvWvW. How do you get into WvWvW?

Just a few thoughts after a few hours in-game:

I like the art style but even on maximum the graphics aren't as detailed and don't "pop" like I thought they would. They are decent but nothing great.

5 GHz 3960X and 4 GTX 680's nearly idling while playing the game (with very low FPS) = ya ok. Low GW2.exe priority keeps killing my USB DAC sound and Logitech G-13.

Are all the maps and cities going to be linked in retail? Makes the game feel small when you can just fast travel everywhere and exploration is basically nill. I miss the old days of having to travel and explore things.

PvP feels very "arcade-ish". Seems like whoever spams their abilities the quickest in a key-smash fest wins. Seems like very little strategy to anything.

Particle effects are way over done and we need a way to turn them down. Fight with more than a few people turns into a particle effect demonstration and it's hard to tell what is going on.

This is all I see on my screen when PvPing:

They said that the graphics settings aren't maxed in beta.

That said, performance is generally terrible. It doesn't matter how good of a setup you have, it's bad. My FPS doesn't change whether I'm at 640x480 or 5760x1080, and it's low.

I can't decide if I like it or not... I rolled a warrior first maybe I should try another class

Turn off reflections. Helps a ton.

Well just got done playing for tonight and I am happy to say that the game meets and exceeds expectations. Its fun, feels polished and the event system really works well. Tomorrow will be another fun filled beta day.
