The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

I'm done with this shit for now, maybe when I've gotten sick of Borderlands 2 (which won't be any time soon if it's anything like the first game) they'll have taken the time to balance their obviously still beta game.
Half the people complain this game is too easy, the other half complain it's too hard, amazing. Goes to show you can't please everyone. If you're having trouble doing a mission, a little critical thinking will go a long way - upgrade your gear, check your play style, and are you making the mission more difficult than it need be? I did that mission on my Norn warrior and it was definitely a change of pace put easily doable. Focus on the objectives and don't get lost fighting.

I hope they don't cater to the ones complaining about difficulty. It feels just right to me, and it's fun failing sometimes, only to come back with a different plan of action and dominate it.

Losing my urge to play this game because of the difficulty spikes in the story quests as well as the bullshit dynamic events. Couple of experiences:

Went back to Diessa Plateau to 100% it as I was only missing a few things. Along the way, I decided to get involved in the giant fight over by Nageling. After being one-shot by his stomp a few times and finally getting the dodge timing right, after a 10 minute battle with at least 15 of us plugging away at him, he finally went down...no reward other than the base low level DE reward. Waste of time and frustration.
You learned the timing, that's good. Fighting him wasn't fun itself? It was a waste of time because you didn't get a special treasure chest? You know warriors can also use rifles and bows, and those weapons are damn strong too. You might want to think about having one on quickswap for situations like this.

There are so many damn things to do in this game, you must not have been having any fun at all if you made that decision already. Did you take a break and try out WvW, sPvP, jump puzzles, or just do some lower level content? Sorry you weren't having any fun, but that doesn't mean the game is still in beta. The launch was really smooth and the game is in a very stable condition. They are also patching almost daily, fixing things. Have fun with Borderlands 2-- you'll be able to come back anytime you like as there's no subscription. ;)

I have three characters and have been through some of the various story missions.

Some of the missions are bullshit, and it always comes down to respawns or NPCs going full retard. Zone mobs shouldn't be respawning immediately after they are killing story instances, and NPCs should be placed into situations where they just get killed immediately. They have already tuned some of the missions, they need to keep tuning or label story missions as a group guest if that is the intent.

Anyone know if they've fixed the drops for the last storyline quest? I'm hesitant to finish because I'd prefer to get exotics instead of random crap.

What tactics changes or gear upgrades are going to help when the game is outnumbering me against veteran mobs two-three to one with respawns?

And yes, I did not capture a screenshot after I performed a weapon swap but my other weapon is a longbow.

I faced that too when they story requirement is too close to my current level, and I'm not geared up to the level required.

Wait until you can gear up to 55 or higher. Things should get easier. You could explore all the other maps first where you otherwise won't visit since your story isn't going to take you there.

Alternatively, take some friends along to help you out. :)

I'm playing from Korea and my friends aren't as high level as I am, so grouping is a bit difficult unfortunately.

Warrior is by far the easiest to start with. They also have the most weapon variety so it gives you a chance to experience most all of the weapon types, even though the skills will be different depending on the class using the weapon.

I have on my 2nd character as an Engi (charr) mainly underwater dudes when I'm doing story on my own.

WvWvW was a blast this weekend. Havn't had this much fun in PvP since... ever! My wife and I went in with all other Yak's Bend-ians and 100% captured everything against Anvil Rock and Hammer this Saturday.

So, so fun.

Usually if you see instant respawning mobs then you're not actually supposed to stay and fight them. I did the Claw Island mission first time without dieing and only killed about 5 or 6 mobs. In this game trying to kill everything you see isn't always the way to go.

 The mission goal is to "Defend the beach." How am I supposed to complete it without fighting the mobs?

I really don't think this happens that often unless it's an event that specifically spawns those mobs. In either case, just try not to pick a fight that you can't win which is largely true in just about any game.

Yes there are places with really quick respawn rates. I solo'd 100% world completion despite this with basically no one else in the 70-80 zones.

That's my problem. These story missions are supposed to be personal. I.e., they're most likely going to be done solo. So why the flying fuck is the game throwing multiple veteran mobs three levels higher than me (and I'm forcibly downleveled to boot!) in a solo quest? In this particular instance I've tried the arrow carts. Once the NPC army is decimated (as seen in my second picture) then the abominations often reset back towards the beach and regen their health. If I try to fight them directly, I end up fighting several at once = death. If I try to revive NPCs, then as soon as they get up they make a run straight at the nearest enemy and get their asses kicked. And they don't rez each other. It's fucking bullshit.

And another thing. I've been struggling to catch my weapon and armorsmithing up to my level (early 50s now.) My weaponsmithing is still stuck creating level 35 masterwork items, and my armorsmithing is even worse. When ArenaNet promised us an MMO without the grind...they fucking lied.

I don't remember this mission very well (honestly all of them were a cake walk and not very memorable because of that), but I don't think you really need to defend it in the literal sense (i.e. kill every single mob that spawns). IRC, just make a showing and let the next plot point reveal itself. Spoiler (not really since the plot's not good enough to spoil): That island gets overrun anyway. Just run around and you can't fail really.

A few notes. First, when they said "without the grind", they meant to be competitive with your gear. leveling up crafting is grindy if you:
1. Farm every mat yourself
2. Rely on it to gear up
#1 is simply not practical due to the TP. #2 is just silly if you were planning on doing that. Personally, I waited until 80 before doing any crafting because of personal experiences with it in other games. I honestly haven't played an MMO with a good crafting system that is simultaneously effective as you level and useful at max level. Conceptually it's somewhat awkward since you don't want to force everyone into crafting. In almost every instance, the person trying to "keep up" crafting with their level is just screwing themselves while leveling since there's no real reason to do it. That said, just stop wasting your time / money with crafting. There's absolutely 0 reason to do it unless you want to get the legendaries. So many people have leveled crafting that no one's going to make a profit from it and the TP itself is super saturated with crafted items from people leveling it.

EDIT: Also wanted to add with regards to crafting... it sounds like you're trying to level by, well, crafting - vs. "discovering". This is not the best way to do it. The lower levels of crafting is pretty trivial to blow past if you just use discovery to level. Conceptually it remains the same up to 400... it just starts costing a lot of gold.

Lastly, regarding your post about the Champion Giant in Diessa. That guy is probably one of the least well designed mobs in the game in terms of mechanics, scaling, and reward. Yea there are a lot of poorly designed blokes, but this guy takes the cake.

Regardless of the grind, I gotta say it is a great crafting system overall and much less of a pain in my ass vs. some other games where I usually don't even ATTEMPT crafting professions. It does take a lot of mats to get through each tier but that's to be expected. If it were too easy everyone would be maxed out in crafting professions with full exotics in no time. They have to have some way to create a curve so that it's not a total cakewalk (unless you just happen to have a metric f-ton of coin)

The main issue I take is that there really shouldn't be a need to use 8 of a fine crafting material to craft leveling gear while leveling a tradeskill...especially when drop rates for said fine crafting materials are freaking abysmally bad.

I agree with waiting until end game to do crafting professions. Once you have most/all of the map unlocked it's easy to port around and gather that specific tier of materials in an area and you don't have to worry about mobs pestering you too bad since you are vastly overpowered despite being scaled back down. Before they nerfed cooking I just jumped all over the map buying the cooking mats for each tier and it was soooooo ridiculously easy (to the point that I understand why they took the mats off the karma vendors).

The main issue I take is that there really shouldn't be a need to use 8 of a fine crafting material to craft leveling gear while leveling a tradeskill...especially when drop rates for said fine crafting materials are freaking abysmally bad.

I get all of the easy stuff myself. The large quantity items, because even though they are cheaper on the TP, they add up in quantity. Then I just sell junk on the TP and save the money to buy the rarer, less easily obtainable mats. Should you be able to gather them all on your own? Definitely. Why they made some of the fine mats so rare, not exactly sure. I wouldn't farm some of those myself. More of a pain in the ass than anything else. What Intel said above and that I agree with is at 80 it's much easier. I can afford to buy those rare crafting components on the TP because money comes much easier at level 80 farming mobs. One thing I have started doing is running from area to area or staying in a specific area for a longer period of time and not porting all over the place anymore. I find my money starts to drop REAL quick at 80 when the ports cost 2 and a half silver a piece.

Refer to my post. You need to just ignore crafting period while you level. It's not designed for you to personally gather all the mats and make upgrades to your gear through that route. Yes it will be grindy if that was what you had in mind. It's just not designed that way for the reasons I've mentioned. So instead of hitting your head against something that's obviously not going to work out, just let it be. If you can't do that, then you should probably just stop playing.

And never craft to level up crafting. Always use discovery.

I would say its not entirely worthless to level your crafting as you level.....

I'm level 25 now on my ranger and I can now make level leather armor for myself so I'm in thus upgrading all my pieces with nice crafted level 25 armor. and swapping out level 19 shit.

I've only been using discovery.

Then it's puzzling why it's difficult to level up. Unless of course, you keep stubbornly trying to farm every single mat vs. buying it from the TP. Either way, it's still worthless to level up crafting so just ignore it if you want to maintain your sanity and gold.

And I would still say it's worthless because you can just buy the same things for coppers from the TP. You're still relatively low and if you keep that mind set, you'll just be frustrated later on when it starts being expensive to level up crafting. Keep the big picture in mind guys.

Yeah, I'm not going to go buying these mats off the TP, not when it would make one discovery cost me at least 8 silver. That will add up real fast, and I've only got 3.5 gold @ level 52.

Crafting is way easier with a guild pool of resources and using the TP for the rarer ones, its almost impossible to do by yourself. I leveled cooking and armorsmithing both to 400 before I hit level 50 by using mats from several people. Being careful and using XP boosters and recipe lists to "discover" the best rewards/lowest cost items got me 10+ levels easily, and in a hurry. Discovering something like a raspberry pie was gettings me 16k+20k xp. Now that I'm 80 and can farm for various things and get the higher level karma-only mats as well, I can provide good weapons and food to my guild so the trade off was worth it. I'd estimate I spent about 2 gold total through the whole thing.

It cost me 15g to get to 400 leatherworking. It's likely more costly now.

The only money I saved was literally the listing fee associated with posting an item to the TP when I crafted my exotics vs. just buying it from the TP. To break even, I would have to craft so many items that I would have ended up paying 15g worth of listing fees.

The reason I did it was when I first set out to get 400, there was still profit to be had. Not many people were 400 and there was quite a mark up on the level 80 crafted exotics. Seeing a potential money saving for myself and a potential source of profit, I decided I needed to get 400 ASAP. I knew that the nature of the TP (i.e. 1 supplier can literally hyper saturate it with no limit and the fact that it's a perfect information market) would force the equilibrium price of crafted goods into cost of mats + listing fee, so I had to act fast. Unfortunately, real life happened and I barely played for 4 days. By the time I actually hit 400, the market had essentially reached equilibrium. So i got shafted. Lesson learned.

I'd estimate I spent about 2 gold total through the whole thing.
Completely false if you take into account the opportunity cost of actually selling the mats vs. using it to craft.

I wouldn't say that. Many people (including myself) never sell mats while leveling for the explicit purpose of using them later on to leveling a particular crafting profession.

Spending 2g leveling something and using the mats you found for free is still in the end spending 2g.

Sounds to me like you aren't doing the mission properly. I struggled at a few missions at the start and each time it turned out that it was me doing something wrong. Since then some missions have been really challenging but always doable. Sorry, I am not taken a dig at your gaming abilites here, just nobody in our guild has complained about the story lines been so hard as to be impossible.

I don't think they have, even if you farm all the mats yourself it's still way less grind than any other MMO that I have played. I haven't gone out of the way to craft, but I just do the daily achievement and a few other events and collect any ore/wood/herbs as I go past. It hasn't seemed like a grind so far anyway. My level is 47 and I am at 220 hunstman and 200 leatherworker, haven't bought anything in the TP either.

But like others have said, crafting is only really usefull at level 80 as you quickly out level any thing you make earlier than that. So saving it all to do until then is a good idea.

Just dont make it into a grind when it doesn't have to one and really isn't.

So are you'll making profits on the high end gear that you craft? The low level market is completely dead and I was wondering if the high end was also.

There's considerably more grind in GW 2 than the original GW, that's not even debatable and has nothing to do with just getting the exotic gear. It takes some grinding just to level up and move forward, to buy better gear that's suited to your level, to get materials to craft. I can't compare it to other MMO's because I've never really played many for too long. I really enjoyed the original GW and played it from the release until about a year ago. I do enjoy this one as well but for anyone that played the original, there's just no way anyone can say there's isn't a lot more reliance on grinding in this game compared to the original. I'm sure Anet didn't make it that way intentionally, it was just their way of making the game deeper and giving more long term playability, but it is what it is, and there's grinding.

If you are not interested in W3 or sPVP the only end game there is, is grinding for gold and/or cosmetic upgrades.

4 weeks of playing and I am only level 21... I find it impossible to pass any kind of mat on the map and not harvest it. Of course I have ludicrous amounts of shit to use, but have yet to choose my profession. My biggest problem is I can't play for more than an hour or so before the motion gets to me. They really need to fix the field of view problem. I should be able to zoom out at least 2-3x as far as we currently can.
