The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Can anyone confirm that you get less XP for kills on higher level mobs (IE, 2-4 levels higher then yourself)? Sure seems like it.

There's no reason to believe that is occuring. I haven't quite figured out how the XP system works, sometimes I kill a centaur get 7xp, then I might kill another 10ft away and get 7xp plus a bonus of 14xp. But I've never seen XP get any lower at higher levels, it seems to scale in proportion to your level and the area you're fighting in.

I've been playing all 8 classes simultaneously leveling. I just choose which of my characters I want to play on any given day and when I get tired of leveling one, I switch to another. The Engineer and Necro are the two classes I play the least at the moment. Both are just not all that fun to me right now. Of the other 5 classes, I think Ranger and Warrior are the easiest to play, far less stressful to survive. After that Guardian, Thief and Mesmer are fun to play, but require more skill. Elementalist is the hardest to play of the 8 classes I've played, but I still enjoy it more than Necro or Engineer.

My brother is a level 62 Elementalist and playing dungeons just fine. Its one of the most challenging classes to play due to the switching of all 4 elements instead of weapons, but certainly not impossible by any means. Its a valid argument that the Ele should do more damage considering he has the lowest armor and health.

My elementalist is 55 now, and I'm starting to feel the same way. I don't really have any issues with PvE, and It may just be my perception, but I feel like I have a hell of a time taking down anyone in WvW and that I die really easily after relatively few hits.

I definitely feel the 'glass', just without the 'cannon'.

Yea, I don't think the Ele is designed to to be a powerful WvW class. Team PvP and PvE is better suited to an Ele.

Thinking of going Armor/Weaponsmith and a secondary like Jewelcrafting or Cooking on my warrior. Problem is, I can't decide between armorsmith or weaponsmith. Is one better than the other or is it just preference?

it seems like a substantial amount of people feel likewise - the streams at twitch sank. i'm trying hard to get into it myself.

No, it doesn't seem like a substantial amount of people seem to feel likewise. In fact, I'm quite certain 90% of GW2 owners are loving it. Just because you may fall into the minority doesn't mean that you should make up BS statements to justify why you don't like something. If you don't like a game, move on to something you do like, don't imply everyone else is nuts for liking it and that you're in the "normal" crowd.

If Xfire's any indication to the userbase, it shows about a 25% drop from release to today, so his comment wasn't totally unwarranted.

I myself have still been having a good time however. All my friends (except one) log on every day, so I assume they are still having a good time as well. The one friend quit at around 20 or so-- he didn't give it much of a chance. He didn't even try sPvP, WvW, or any dungeons (obviously). Oh well.

Its probably not your taste in games then. I played the original GW for almost 7 years, the first 5 years were great, wanted to play every day, it started losing some steam for me the last 2 years but that's to be expected for a 7 year old game.

I've tried my best to understand why so many people like WoW or Borderlands, but I never could get it. I tried multiple times to play them and both games were just awful to me. That clearly doesn't make them awful, just not my taste apparently.

I never really got those games either. I played WoW for a while pre-BC but quit the launch of BC after I got my first taste of raiding. I think I may have just gotten tired of gaming. This was the only game I bought this year.

Should have my 2nd 80 by the end of this weekend if I can log enough time on Sat-Sun. No feeling of slowing down or boredom, which is huge for me. I'm usually bored within a week of launch and knowing I'm not going to be re-upping my sub by week 2 or 3. Don't have to worry about the sub part with this game but I am having more fun in an MMO than I have in many years. Last game I got *really* into like this was EQ2 around the Faydwer expansion. It's a nice change of pace feeling like I will get at least a few months enjoyment out of this game. And assuming content is continually added the sky is the limit. To anyone who quits because of lack of challenge or feeling like the game is too carebear etc etc etc. try some dungeons on explore mode.

I'm 28 and I'm having the time of my life in the game, not even thinking about boredom, just playing and noticing 4 hours went by as if they were 2 minutes.

I don't even get as much time to play as I would like and I think I have 175 hours logged so far.

Hit level 72 last night...mainly leveling 40-72 thru that Cadecus Manner dungeon...it was great when the 15 min runs netted you 2/3rd-3/4ths XP of your current level bar before the last patch yesterday. The greatest part is being able to put it down and not feeling obligated to play just because of a subscription fee. Although I probably won't create additional characters because of the amount of time it takes to reach 80 though.

To 80 is a journey though, enjoy the ride. ;)

I'm in the same boat. Got my Ranger to 80 last week and was totally stoked to start on my Guardian because of the personal story and because there's still so much of the world to experience. I'm currently 42 on my Guardian and should hit 80 by the end of the weekend. This is the first MMO I've played where I've been excited to max level multiple characters. I will eventually work on my Warrior next and will probably max level every class.

I'm still giddy as a kid playing this game after 3 weeks. Kudos to Anet for the amazing art direction, music, and gameplay. I've gotten more than my money's worth so far and will continue to enjoy the experience.

Never talk again...

:D

I've done very little crafting so my levels are hard earned through battle, but I've got a level 32 Ranger, level 27 Guardian, level 20 Warrior, level 20 Thief, level 15 Mesmer and Elementalist, level 8 Necro, and level 3 Engineer. I've put very little time into my Necro and Engineer so far, I'm leveling the others mostly simultaneously. I've got some catch up to do with my Warrior, Mesmer,Ele and Necro, not too interested in bringing up my Engineer at all for a while. He's doing mule duties right now giving me more storage space for my gear and items.

Yea, I think the word was out that everyone was exploiting that dungeon so Anet patched the game and slowed it down.

When I had WoW, it seemed like I had all the time in the world. With GW2, I've been busy as hell with IRL stuff. I'm only lvl 40 and I've been playing since launch. Kinda sucks!

That's life. When the original GW came out, I had a lot less responsibilities so I had a lot more time to play. I guess its ok though, nothing says I have to finish GW2 in a month. I got years to play off and on as much as I like which is why I like the subscription model in these games.

yeah, i guess that's true. No monthly fees, so I don't have to rush through it.

I didn't get time to play last night, I usually log about 1 hour on weekdays. I love the no-sub as I don't feel bad at all.

To those that are having a hard time with the weaker classes (Ele, thief, etc) you really need to try group play, join a guild or something. A lot of folks seem to be looking for a faceroll solo-everything class and it just doesn't exist, you can squeak by sometimes with some planning and good tactics though. Signets, boons, DoT attacks, etc. are very imporant when dealing with a lot of mobs or hard bosses, and each class has something to bring to the table so you don't necessarily need the traditional tank/dps/healer group that most MMO's require. I play primarily as a thief, and it isn't as susceptible to direct damage as some other classes, but suffers heavily from bleeding/poison/fire so I have to be very careful about when I pop my healing.

The thing is, those classes are harder regardless, by design, they're speciality classes. However I honestly don't want to be part of a guild, I don't want to the burden of trying to play with people I don't know well or hoping someone is online so I can play with them. I've always been a solo player, other than my brother whom I play with occasionally. So I don't really make any excuses for the challenge of playing those classes by myself, sure it might be easier with a capable party, but its the choice I've made playing solo. It forces me to approach combat differently and probably thinking about my trait and skills choices and how to use them effectively. Nothing against the guild concept in this game though, I know people do love them.

I enjoy the Thief(aka Assassin) though. Its a fast paced melee class which requires constant attention to positioning. Its a challenge but rewarding when you can pull it off.

Yeah I did 5 story runs there over the weekend, and I definitely was thinking to myself "damn, this is just *TOO* easy to get exp, I LOVE IT." -- shoulda known, nerf imminent. I've heard CM is hard as fuck on explore mode though, but I haven't tried it yet.

i have slowed down significantly on this game. im level 60 and havent played much at all.

granted i have been busy but i think i am gonna switch from my thief to a guardian

Funny, that is exactly what I'm doing .....have a lvl80 thief that I'm working towards getting exotic armor for. Working on my lvl 26 guardian, which I'm finding is just as fun to play as my thief (although I find myself needing to be more twitchy with my thief since her attack animations are very fast.) With my guardian, I find the attack animations to be very slow in comparison, especially with a greatsword (which gives me time to think, and see which skills are on cooldown before I attack with my next skill) , but nevertheless a lot of fun. So far a mix of defensive party buffs with some strong AOE attack skills with greatsword....not a bad mix.

Next up I think is engineer, then mesmer , then my warrior ...this is gonna take a while :X

What server do you play on? I don't think the classes are made to be harder/easier although they are somewhat imbalanced at this point. It seems like too many mmo have stuck to the trifecta of classes and it confuses people when they actually have to adapt the playstyle or use tactics of any kind. My Thief is my favorite as well with the necro a close second.

You think a greatsword is slow, try the mace. Mace is extremely popular for a defensive guardian, but the attack animation on the third strike on the main skill drives me insane. It takes too long to activate so I just can't use a mace. Greatsword with a Staff on switch is good.

Anvil Rock.

I don't mean that they intentionally made some harder or easier but clearly the playstyle is easier for some than others. When it comes to having to manage 4 elements for the Elementalist and knowing what all of those skills do and when to use them properly, its just more difficult, its basically like having 4 switchable weapons for any other class. Some classes like Mesmer are fantastic in PvP, but struggle some in PvE due to their skills. I don't think its necessarily imblanced but some classes are better suited to certainly types of play than others.

It sucks that mace is the obvious choice for the shield tank. I prefer sword for the DPS but mace wins hands down in terms of defensive capabilities. I ended up just saying fuck defense and now I use a hammer. Traited right it does great AoE damage I have good survivability and I feel less "like every other Guardian" using a Greatsword.

I like the hammer on the Guardian, even more than I do on the Warrior but I do like the hammer skills on both. People claim the hammer doesn't do enough damage for Guardian but I just like the skills. I've found use for all of them in PvE. I think Greatsword and Staff are most efficient, but nothing says you can't use any other weapons either. I also like a main hand sword and torch, and hammer of course for the knockdowns.

The bonus XP is due to how long the mob has been spawned in the world, that much I know.

Interesting, didn't know that, but it makes sense. In place to prevent people from camping a spawn point.

Precisely... I've noticed a general trend in almost all MMO's that a "weaker" class is inherently "harder to play", which is just flat out wrong.

The PvP vs. PvE aspect is largely thrown off due to PvE basically heavily favoring DPS and nothing but DPS. Even defensive stats are almost irrelevant in PvE (died? graveyard zerg back or just let someone res you). For the most part, everything is largely dps focused in PvE. Mobs and Bosses (out in the world and in dungeons) in general lack some serious skill diversity that forces players to use utility or defensive tactics.

On another note, this past weekend, I ran numerous explorable dungeons with some friends to first of all see the content and second to see what all this fuss about non-CoF (pre-nerf) explorable paths was. I came away with a few conclusions:

1) The other paths aren't harder. They're just less efficient (some were just inexcusably long). Time and time again we came across HP sponges that just took forever to kill (again, stressing DPS over utility/defense). It's like they ran out of creativity and just added a few too many zeros to HP pools. I run a Rampager Ranger with traits into DPS. I had no problem surviving and only died at most twice in a single dungeon. On several occasions, I literally just alt tabbed out to browse the internet. I never died and my auto attack beat the boss.

2) The fights and mobs are uninteresting and simply... boring. This made the content inherently un-fun with no gameplay motivation for replayability outside of the rewards.

3) The rewards themselves are incredibly poorly designed. Dungeon tokens need to be universal. The current system is inexplicably bad. If you want a dungeon set, you now have no reason to run anything other than that dungeon. Who thought this was a good idea?

Interesting, didn't know that, but it makes sense. In place to prevent people from camping a spawn point.

It also encourages people to explore the map and kill things. The bonus can get quite high. I think the highest I've seen or heard of is +2000xp.

Really suggest playing the game, it's not grindy.

Though out of curiosity, name a non grindy game in the genre.

Five months later I notice I once posted in this thread lol. That was exactly my point - there is not a non-grindy MMO yet. They are all using the same old mechanics, just in slightly different forms, perhaps some better than others. Other genres have been making advances (and unfortunately going backwards in some cases).

Core gameplay mechanics of MMOs have just been sitting static for years and years. I played one for three months over a decade ago. I played another for a month several months ago. And I felt like I was still playing the same game with a different theme, and I certainly wasn't having as much fun as in other genres, and I would have become bored altogether very quickly had I continued.

I want to play an MMO for player interaction (both cooperation and competition) and deep player influence / control in the world eveyone lives in. EVE is the closest, but it still kept one thing from the rest of the games in the genre: the grind. So I don't play it either. Still waiting for the non-grindy sandbox MMO.

The interaction in GW2 is lame. There's almost no point to be grouped with someone. I think I've grouped twice with someone.
