I GOT IN ! YAY!

silly how the NDA covers *everything*, i thought this was for the purpose of having us raving on how cool it is; instead, we're prevented from writing about looks, gameplay, story ..

The one thing I really really really want in, and I don't get it :(, singed up within 1 minute of it being out too.

The time you signed up didn't matter. It was just open invitations for the time period and then they selected later based on random luck/hardware configurations.

Really bummed i didn't get one, but I wasn't really holding out high hopes with over a million sign ups.

I wonder if they're still going out or done already... :(.

EDIT: Per ArenaNet they are going out today and the next couple of days. /cross fingers.

Still no invite. I wonder when the last day is they're sending invites this wave.

Oh well, pre-orders are only three weeks away and we're supposedly getting beta access for pre-ordering. So if not now, I'll see you all in three-ish weeks? :D

Oh dang... didn't know invites were going out. Guess I missed the boat. Oh well, there's always pre-order.

Pre order will get you access to all the weekend beta events (i imagine this is OPEN beta). The invites circulating are for closed beta. I didn't get an invite yet, but one of my friends did over the weekend. I was MAD BRO.

Actually, prePURCHASE gives access, not preorder I thought. Plus that only starts April 10th, not beta for it.

They stated that invites would be going out until the 20th, so I don't know if that means more are going out tomorrow, but it will be the last day.

Yep, it's pre-purchase, not pre-order, and it does start on April 10th.

No luck here. I would rather have gotten into this rather than D3.

The pre purchase for beta access is a turnoff for me though. I definitely won't be pre purchasing.

We knew they were going to do micro-transactions so I guess it's ok that we will be able to get them with in game gold if someone is trading Gems. I do dislike in game economies being driven by real money though. It's a lot different from Plexes in that if Arena.net releases too much micro-transaction crap it could fuck up the in-game economy.

That only makes sense if you are going to wait until the price drops...or you aren't sure if its going to be good.

What they have not said is if gems can be converted back into real money. I suspect that is not the case (unlike Diablo 3, for example) so the gold farmers will really have no incentive to play the game--players can buy gems to sell for gold so there is no need for the farmer, and if gems cannot be turned into cash there is no mechanism to extract real money by farmers.

Ugh. The gems to gold kind of annoys me. Actually, it really annoys me. Basically spend money to get gems then convert germs to gold to buy anything you want to on the Auction House. If they didn't have that, I would be perfectly fine with it.

I am just glad the combat system rewards skill moreso than other MMOs. I'm also sure the best armor and weapons will be from karma/pvp/dungeons, so maybe AH stuff won't be that great. Oh well, I guess we'll see. Maybe I'm worried for nothing.

Got into the beta a couple days ago.

Funny how the NDA completely forbids you from talking about it.

Like, what if you are playing, and someone walks in and asks:

"What's that game?"

Are you just supposed to say "nothing, go away?"

Just like PLEX. It's a fucking brilliant idea.

I really like the idea because it cuts the gold sellers off at the knees.

I think this is an acknowledgement of the reality that people will always be motivated to buy MMO currency and that by essentially enforcing "prohibition", you give rise to a criminal element that may end up damaging the game in other, harder to control and unexpected ways.

My GW account was looted pretty badly in 2009 and it pretty much killed my enjoyment of the game. I had a lot of hard earned prestige items and the feeling of having my account violated was really troubling.

There was a rash of these hacks around that time and while I lost a lot, I was fortunate that my characters were not deleted and I was left with enough common items (basic armor) to allow me to not completely start over.

Certainly these events were driven by someone seeking to steal in game valuables to turn them into gold / ectos that they can sell.

By acknowledging that this is going to always happen, and then taking control of the process, I think they are going a long way to circumvent a majority of these problems.

Anyone get in the beta but won't be playing it? I'd love to check it out..I have too much free time :(

Okay, I take back what I previously said because of this quote by Mark Kerstein,
That gold is coming from other players. So somebody must have an abundance of gold if he trades it to a player. The system is not adding new gold from the outside.
That's what I was worried about. This actually sounds like a nice system then. :)

I don't think this is going to cut off gold selling if they make items in the store too expensive. Gold sellers only need to undercut the Gem market.

You know what? This makes me happy that you actually changed your mind.

And I agree. EVE has had this model around for a while now and I love the fact that when you think about it, it locks the market down exactly where you want it to.

No more gold sellers simply because why risk getting caught and banned when you can just buy it legally?

Money comes in but never goes out.

Certain emails relative to this thread are apparently still going out. I got one a few hours ago.

Can't really talk about it. ;)

not bad. so u cna only get vanity items using real money/gems? thats pants

Well, the "market place" is like the auction house in wow. So, if players can put BOE gear up there for sale, then you could use gold from gems for that stuff. Not sure what can be sold on the market place exactly though.

Also, there's not really a power progression at top end gear, so any gear you get from any other source is just as good as whatever you would get from real money, so that concern isn't as large as it would be in some games. It's still kind of a bummer if it works that way though.
