The Official Borderlands 2 Thread

I found a purple level 20 pistol off a chubby mob. The thing is badass as it shoots 2 bullets per shot. (Doesn't just consume) Also has amazing accuracy for a pistol and has a little scope on it. More powerful then my sniper rifle up until long ranges as the accuracy of the 2 rounds being fired at the same time drops off.

And yeah, the burst sniper rifles piss me off. I've found so many sniper rifles that would have ruled but then I realize they have the worthless burst 'bonus'. Three round burst on a six round clip. Worthless.

I'm with ya on the sniper rifle part. Burst in zoom...I only need 1 shot, why do you give me 3?

Granted I'm only one a 1920x1080 setup, but I'm running all settings as high as possible and the lowest I've seen it drop is around 40, and that's with A LOT of banners and shit flying around, in a city'ish location. Everywhere else it's smooth.

Well there's definitely some odd lag going on. I can dip down into the 40's and even 30's depending on how much Physx stuff is going on. But I'll also get like.. stuttering, or choppiness when it's 50 or 60fps, indoors/outdoors, doesn't matter. Could be nothing else going as well.

I haven't checked the gearbox forums in a while, but there were a lot of posts about the same issue. And I could've swore I saw a post about Nvidia being aware and working on a fix. I could never find the twitter post again though.

Looks like it's the usual "shit for some, sunshine/rainbows for others" crap again. It's almost inevitable with some games/cards/driver combinations.

For me the game stays pretty steady with my 680, but if there are a lot of enemies and my turret starts spewing rockets the framerate bottoms out big time.

Shouldn't be happening to you. I'm using a 680 on an arguably inferior rig to yours at 1920x1200 with full max, high Phsx, and I'm running easy peasy.

That's why I think it's a case by case basis, happens to some and doesn't to others. :(

When'd you get a 680? You upgrade just the GPU, or the rest too? I think I recall you having had a 4xx before, or?

I run a 680 at 1080p too, and I'd say like 95% of the time it is smooth as butter, but there are occasions when I get some significant slowdown. I think that is an optimization/driver issue, though, as has been mentioned before (apparently nVidia is looking into it).

Most of the time it doesn't even have anything to do with what is going on on-screen or having a lot of PhysX particles or anything. Turning View Distance down to High instead of Ultra High helps sometimes on those huge open maps.

Yup. Just sold the 480 and upgraded to a 680. Got to be the last stop in the road for this rig but it was worth it. :)

Solid upgrade, but you should have just went with a 670 and overclocked it a bit, could have saved yourself some cash. Unless you got some sweet deal?

What's the visual loss on high vs ultra high with view distance? Noticeable?

A friend owed me a favor so that helped but my overall rule on upgrades is: Sell old part to subsidize upgrade or no dice.

Somewhat noticeable (on a still screen, anyway), but not significant, if that makes sense. Like basically you just lose some of the really small objects, like boxes and whatnot, at very long distances. However, frame-rate wise I got a pretty good boost in places like Three Horns Valley and that area with Tiny Tina (can't recall the name).

Shouldn't be necessary on a rig like yours, mine, or several others around here but if that's what it takes to get around this hiccup then so be it.

I agree, for me it's just a workaround until they patch the game or nVidia releases new drivers. Gotta be some optimization issues, I'm sure.

Basically I just read that GeForce tweak guide and weighed the settings against the current performance differentials. I turned off DOF because it seemed to improve performance a bit and I don't really care for the effect anyway. The view distance seemed to make a pretty big difference so I changed that as well, and because on those large "vista" maps I would get slowdown even with nothing happening. PhysX apparently makes a huge difference but I don't think I could play the game without it now, the visual impact is huge and having tons of sparks and particles and blood flying around improves the game a lot.

Thinking about the times where mine really got had performance drops - they were both on levels I was sick of re-playing. So I just tried to dash through them and occasionally toss a turret out to wipe out a crowd.
The turret rockets definitely bog things down a bit, especially with banners and a ton of enemies getting hosed. In one case, it was in the large "drain" in the Bloodshot hideout with the whirlpool at the bottom.
It's not a like a stutter or anything like that - but a pretty definitely slowdown like my PC has too much to deal with and it's just not able to keep up.

I've never been big on DOF myself so I'll turn it off today myself and see what I think.

As documented before this game is a huge win for PhysX. Running that on High is definitely worthwhile if people can pull it off.

Yeah, the sniper rifle I found with the most damage had a 7 shot magazine and then I discovered that when zoomed it fired a 6 round burst. WTF?!?!

Most definately. I'm running an i7-930, 6GB ram and a Radeon HD 5970 and play at 1920x1080 and am able to run the game with everything, including PhysX maxed out and haven't noticed a single slowdown yet.

Theres a large post going on at the Gearbox forums, my 670 is actually having trouble with the game too. For the most part it's good but fights can drop pretty badly. I expected the game to be like silk.

Yeah that's the main one I think. I haven't checked on it in a while, and it's blocked at work.

Any interesting developments? I'm guessing no otherwise word would've spread.

I'm still making it through and thoroughly enjoying the game. 45 hrs in and I haven't even beat it yet.

Is it just placed with a lot of fighting/physx where people are getting fps drops?

I am on SLI GTX 580s running at 1920x1200 and I am getting framerate drops just looking in certain directions in zones. In Thousand Cuts I get drops down into the mid 40s for some reason. Then there will be places I am at a locked 60 fps even with tons of physx effects on the screen. I really don't know why it does that. Also in places like Bloodshot Stronghold (which is indoors), if I look toward a certain area it drops into the high 40s. Well the problem is I have to deal with that during combat and it throws everything way off.

Try turning down the View Distance for the time being. I think on those larger areas it will help. It's almost like it's rendering everything in that direction regardless of whether or not you can see it (improper occlusion culling?).

Oh I've already done that. In fact I checked it the other night and it was already set to High, so I must've done it at some point early on.

There didn't seem to be a huge loss of detail, a lot of little stuff that at a distance, in motion, you probably wouldn't really notice anyway.

Yeah, I was responding more to the post directly above mine but yeah. :p

And I didn't notice much loss of detail either. Like you said and I mentioned before, it's a lot of little things that you wouldn't really need to see at extreme distance anyway. Obviously it would be nice to leave it on max settings but at the moment it's not worth it.

I wasn't sure. Thought my input would help a little to see that we believe the issues lies else where. I honestly did not really test to see what a performance difference there was between "high" and "ultra high" currently.

Might help a little though.

I know my resolution is lower (1680x1050) but on SLI480s I have it maxxed out and I haven't run into a single slow down in the game. Only tweak to the game I have done is the pop-in time thing.

The one change I would really like to see is only the host being able to accept and turn in missions. I was trying to save all the side missions until pt2.5 and someone went around and started about a dozen missions last night.

or just don't open co-op when you don't want missions triggered? why should they implement such a restriction when it's still useful to those who aren't playing with strangers. normally people would be running through them together, instead of joining random games just to jack off and showboat.

Heh, damage scales to insane levels, I'm not even 50 yet.

LVL 48 Zero, sniper based tree
93ish stacks of Critical Ascension
Slag on target dummy
first clip shot
deception full charge
zoom full charge
14k sniper rifle (no element)

4.9 Million on the target dummy

Of course I could never get that high on normal combat. Highest I've done so far was 800k on a super badass loader in oppurtunity with a 9k corrosive sniper thats slagged coming out of deception.

Just finished the first play though. Really great game. Pretty well done as far as the story goes.

So I've already started PL2. I'm guessing if I go back to "farm" the last boss in Normal, my loot will not carry over to the PL2 save. Is that correct? I haven't gone that far in PL2. Just up to Liar's... something. Where Hammerlock is.

You can farm PL1 all you want. Then go back to PL2 with your new gear.

Well I think I managed to fix my SLI issues after some tweaking last night. I ended up having to force AFR-2 in the Borderlands 2 profile, then, in the SLI and Physx config screen, set GPU1 to control the Physx. Leaving it set to GPU2 had resulted in a few random crashes for some reason and setting Physx to CPU created a damn slideshow during gun fights.

With the new working configuration I got equal GPU usage across both cards and a large bump in FPS. The GPU usage was still not where it should be though; it still fluctuated between 90% and 40%. The game however did seem to feel a bit more fluid but I only tested out single player in Frostbite cavern. I really need to test out Bloodshot Stronghold on MP to see if it's made any difference.

Hmm. I think I'll try that little trick to make the game think there's 4 people playing. See what I can get off the last boss.

Caustic caverns was amazing, went there last night. The fps was a little low though.

I liked that area, but honestly thought it was the least "impressive" of them all.

In the opposite, I hated the area. I don't like those bugs. They are annoying as hell to fight. Lol!

think I am nearing the end of PL1. at the base bit where you have to run around and kill all the big guns which seems to last forever.

I still feel there are places and screens I have just completely missed because nothing really went on there. Some places seemed sort of there just to have side missions. Lynnwood (lynchwood? forget the name) is a good example. If it wasn't for the one main mission there, you would never have to go there other wise.

might do a PL2 when I'm done but for some reason as much as I like BL2, it just doesn't seem to have that same replay feel. I tried to do every mission I could.

Guess it is time to shell out the 29.99 for the "DLC when available pack"

I will say it seemed to trail off towards the end. You had some really great looking areas that didn't get much attention (unless I missed a bunch of missions).

The volcano area really sticks out. I didn't spend much time there it seems but I'm pretty sure I did all the missions. Same with Lynchwood. Though with Lynchwood there was too much running. There was a mission I skipped because there would be just too much running, lol.

I loved the end-bit with Claptrap. His dialogue is great.

I wouldn't spend too much time farming the final boss, or any boss for that matter. Playthrough 2 is difficult, but gear is noticeably better. Most, if not all, of the best gear playthrough 1 gives can quickly get replaced by whites of a higher level.

Unless you're seriously struggling with a section, I'd recommend to continue through. The difficulty starting 2 for me was a seamless transition coming from the final level and boss.

How do you do that?

Q-BZ posted this:

I haven't tried it myself yet.

Even if you're playing as if it were 4 person co-op? Surely the drops must be better. Right now my sniper rifle has 2k damage.

the thing about it... in SP mode the square boxes never have weapons. With the mod they now sometimes contain weapons. It is not just the quality of the weapons that is affected, but the likelihood of there being any.

Yeah I don't think higher weapons are only available in MP. More drop so you have more chances of getting good loot; hence "better loot" in the tooltip, but not exclusively higher quality loot.
