The Official Borderlands 2 Thread

Just played for awhile...some initial thoughts.

Awesome game so far. Just great. That said...

-Texture swapping seems WAY worse in this one as opposed to BL1. Not sure why that is but it is really bad sometimes. Hopefully there will be a fix or INI tweak for it.

-Sometimes the textures seem funky. Like when I first saw Hammerlock he looked really screwy due to the shadows being blurry/weird. They also turn into crappy looking low-detail ones when you get like 50 feet back from something. Again, hopefully tweaks/patches will fix.

-The UI doesn't bother me too much, but I agree that it could be a LOT better. For some reason everything in it seems blurry and overall it's just kind of hard to use with the weird angle it's at.

-Checking out the Badass Rank Points thing, it should tell you what the reward does and confirm if you want to spend a point on it. I tried to click on a lower one to see what it was and it just automatically used the point. It was Shield Regen Speed, so it wasn't a total waste, but that seems poorly designed. I guess the titles are self-explanatory but being a totally new mechanic, how would anyone know?

-I am getting some odd "micro"-stutter. 1080p, settings maxed out. Framerate is smooth otherwise. I haven't upgraded to the 306 drivers yet so I'll try that, but it's odd because there's no framerate drop in general.

-I LOVE the PhysX effects. Even on blood you get the PhysX particles, and you get debris flying all around while in a battle. It's great, really nice use of the technology and makes me glad I went nVidia.

-I kinda wish the guns sounded...more powerful. Kind of a pet peeve of mine when in games the gunfire sounds don't really have any "punch" to them. Like firing the starting Gearbox assault rifle, it just doesn't sound powerful.

-The AI does seem better in this, they actually try to pursue/flank you and will throw grenades and shit. Makes it so you can't just hide in a corner until you regen. They're not SUPER intelligent, but good enough for this game and an improvement over the first.

I guess that's about it for now. Loving the game, though, and I can foresee a LOT of hours put into it. Plus, all that Season Pass DLC...mmm...

Oh, btw, have you guys used the Golden Key yet, or are you going to wait until you get to a higher level? I wonder how good the loot is if you're max level when you get it. I was thinking about waiting, myself. I assume it's possible to get more, though, later in the game?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I also have the weird "gib explosion but no dismemberment" thing. Must be a bug because it looks ridiculous.

my understanding is that the gold keys are a 1 shot deal, but on the "positive" side they are likely to be used as social network promotional items, if you are into that BS. Gotta figure the $60+$30 was not enough.

I think i am level 8 and I haven't spent any skill points yet and probably wont until level 10.

There are stations that will reset your skill point allocation. (They can also redo your characters looks)

Anyone use the Homering Dart pistol quest reward from Dr. Ned? It looks like the particle effects are bugged when you fire it, shoots out orange squares. Wonder if it's just me, I'm using Physx high btw.

Anyone having issues with inviting or joining a friend on Steam to a Borderlands 2 game?

My friend and I have both been timing out trying to connect to each other.

I'm getting some strange, random performance issue with this game (I'm using the latest cap BTW). I peak around 180 FPS with everything on high/ultra (except I can't turn PhysX off, I set it to low) and at random I drop to 50 FPS. No reason, just drop it for the sake of it then it spikes back up to 100s FPS. Also I get this strange low texture issue when I open a safe that has money it in it. It shows the blurry low texture version of it first then it switches from low resolution textures to high resolution textures a few seconds later. It does this with every safe that has money in it.

Overall the game is great and funny from the "little" issue ;) It has a really good sense of humor with the NPCs.

I'm having some connection problems tonight that I haven't had before but it could be on my end. Also with the golden keys you can go to extras on the main menu and sign up for shift and you get another gold key. I think I am going to wait till about 25 to use mine.

Hmm I signed up for shift to get my extra key and now when I started a game it told me "You have 3 golden keys now available for use. :D

The new UI is confusing as crap.. and the pop in sucks too. Other than two those gripes, liking it a lot. I also wish you could zoom in/out of the in-game hud like BF3.

You can adjust the UI size if that's what you mean. It's called HUD Scale under the Video options.

Also, I recommend this to everyone. TURN OFF THE UI SWAY

It stops all the menus from moving and makes it look nicer imo.

One thing I noticed which I'll share, if you click on your equipped weapon in the inventory It will pop up the stats on the left side and give you the weapons in your inventory on the right, making for an easier compare.

Also. Doesn't seem MSI Afterburner works when you have the SMAA Injector installed. Anyone else know how to monitor your GPU in-game? Curious to see the RAM usage.

Last thing. I got into some pretty Physx heavy fights. I had a shock pistol which would explode and put out all these like sparks. So there was a ton of that going on and other explosions, etc. Anyway. My FPS didn't seem to dig below 50, but the game seemed to visually lag, if you know what I mean. Like it felt as if it was slowing up, lagging, but it shouldn't have because the FPS was solid.

No issues with the game. All the Console problems that plagued the old release seem to be gone at launch. ( Were patched in 1 ).

Runs fine at max settings. As for the game itself. Pretty much just more of borderlands 1. Not worth 60$. But I got it free I can't complain :p

that kinda sucks. I guess i'll just play vanilla for now, but Aida64 would show the data you need, it does on my G13 how I have it set up. I'll try tomorrow night and see if it drops to stock clocks.

ok, off to try it out finally, Dad duties are done lol ;-)

Just tried to play with a friend and we couldn't connect to each other at all. Timeout every time.

I added my PC to DMZ temporarily and it connected first try...

I'm guessing it might need all the steam ports?

there is already a comically easy way to get as many as you want if you feel like being a dirty cheater. you literally just change 1 number in an ini file for as many as you want.

you also get one per character, i think. the items are just random epics for your level, they aren't super exclusive or anything.

I haven't played much yet, only for a few hours this morning. I had a gun with exploding rounds and I think I only saw dismemberment or really nice blood splurts on critical hits.

After getting a nice sniper rifle, I can reliably blow people's heads off...except they're not actually blown off, there's a ton of blood and gibs that come off but their head is still attached. :p

well, the explosive weapons actually appear to be explosive, area of effect and knock back, actually useful unlike last game.

This pisses me off. Don´t water down Borderlands like that, we need a little bit of ultraviolence... I really hope that this is a bug and not a censorship issue.

damn the AI is just so stupid. I can be killing people on one side while right on my other side they are just standing there or patrolling. I have shot people and they don't even do anything sometimes. if it was rare than I would not complain but it happens over and over. also something that really ruined one fight was when I saw several enemies just start spawning almost right in front of me.

I'm using Catalyst 12.6 and the CAP released at the same time...everything is smooth as butter (2560x1600, rig in sig). Not going to mess with the new drivers/CAP, don't mess with whats working.

So far very much enjoying the game, 7 hours in as Zero and level 12. I really enjoy the ability to snipe the hell out of a camp, then any enemy that gets close enough I set up a decoy, flank him and shotgun his head off point blank. :D

I also like the "Badass" points; they seem to give you more customization of your characters even above and beyond your normal stat allocation, which is nice. And since they're unlimited, I'm not too worried about screwing them up; and really they're just small %age bumps to all useful skills anyway, so it isn't as though you can go wrong.

So far I'd say 8.5/10, I also liked the first game quite a bit. I'll second some of the issues/critiques others have had: guns could have more "oomph" to their sounds, heads don't pop off for me either (except this one type of badguy...first time that happened, well, I won't spoil it). Texture pop-in, mainly when opening chests, sucks.

Anyone playing a Gunzerker? seems like all i group up with is assasin's and other siren's..and maybe like 2 commando's so far.

LOL I could have told you that was going to be the case basically the moment they announced all the classes. ZOMG NINJAS AND MAGIC GIRLS ARE BETTER

i was under the impression everyone was going to be playing zerker, so i rolled the sniper. i played commando in the first borderlands and wanted to try something different.

I started the original Borderlands with Lilith and plan on doing that when I play co-op with a friend. I never played Roland much, so I'm using Axton for my solo campaign.

Personally I think the gunzerker class turns people off in some subconscious way. I know sounds wierd but it's as his class and art style are just meh.

having never played the original B2 seems way too easy...even if you die you respawn with the enemies all having the same amount of damage as before you died...so there's no penalty for dying

thats not true, if you died, enemies got all their life back

This game is great, was wondering, my main rig can play this no problem. Was thinking about adding a laptop to just kinda have around downstairs, seen the asus had 660m and a i7 ivy bridge, would this be enough to max this game out?

Give me the day and i will tell you

Just ordered it based on the comments here. Ordered a KFA / Galaxy 660Ti too. I can't afford the whole new PC yet but I may as well get the important bit.

Just curious: Are you guys doing co-op or single player for your first run-through?

Single right now but tonight might try co-op with some RL friends who don't cheat. I will avoid random matches due to some folks already using exploits to get golden keys and overpowered weapons. Cheaters really ruin the experience.

It should run great but your FPS might dip a bit with high physx due to the lower amount of shaders on this graphics core. Regardless I think it should be fine.

I played last night on coop and had a blast. Played for about 2.5 hours then had to get ready for bed. Ran great @ 3240 x1920, FXAA is off everything else is on high with physx @ medium. I might change that to high now that I know it was running great.

Well worth the price for this game.

um unless that is a very low res, there is no way a 660m will run this game smoothly on max settings and high physx.

Just out of curiosity, does it feel like a rehash of the first BL [not that that would be a bad thing]?

...being heavily annoyed by the excruciatingly slow reload times.

Yes, glad I'm not the only one. Only level 9 so far, but Bullymongs are the bane of my Commando's existence. The guns I found so far either do shit damage or use so much ammo per shot that I end up having to reload every few shots. Having to wait for a 2 second reload sucks when you've got a pack of Bullymongs bearing down on ya.

Started off right away with trying to boost my turret, but I'm thinking that was a bad idea. I can't keep it out long enough to really be worthwhile yet. Think I'll respec into some skills to make me better for now.
