Other than the fact that it has a 41 MP sensor and uses Windows Phone 8, I know nothing about this phone. I intend to get it out of contract and use it with Page Plus.

Anyone else looking forward to this phone?

Look at 808's performance and you'll get an idea how it will be. Of course I'm looking forward, finally a worthwhile smartphone with camera even better than cheap system cameras.

Looking forward to it but I will stick with Lumia 920. It just got camera unit replaced since the lens had clear visible flaws and thanks to that images were crappy. But anyway, I wonder what soc they will use. They either need dedicated image chip or extremely new top end Snapdragon. If I remember correctly S 800 supported 41MP.

I have an 808, love it.. it has a dedicated Broadcom GPU just to handle camera-related tasks. I'm fairly sure they'll use the same solution for the new WP phone.

TechHead, would you be willing to share some pictures from your 808? I've seen the press release demo shots, but never pictures from a regular user. Thanks!

Do these full-sized shots have oversampling to increase the quality? Do you get even better quality pics if you reduce the resolution to 8MP?
No oversampling at full resolution. That's just not possible. I wouldn't say the quality at 8MP is better, but it's far more practical and more than sufficient. The 8MP images it produces are better than any other cell phone out there by a very large margin. Taking full resolution photos is unfortunately considerably slower and they take up 10-15mb of space each.

If you're not shooting in low light much, it does make for one hell of contender. Nokia really outdid themselves there.

Well we have f1.9 even in the Lumia 720 which gives excellent low light performance, so what prevents Nokia from using a bigger aperture in the 1020 too?

Large apertures are much easier on smaller sensor sizes. The lens has to be proportionally larger. They don't want it too big. Even with a smaller aperture, the larger sensor size is going to compensate for that and let you shoot at a higher ISO without (as much) loss of quality. The lens on the 808 is f/2.4 and lets in considerably more light than the lens on the 720.

looking forward to seeing what this device can do. I owned an N8 and loved having a great camera-phone. When I went to the N9 it wasn't nearly the same, but it was respectable. I skipped out on the 808 and recently picked up a tmobile 521 to test out WP8 and I feel like the OS was made for taking pictures. Social integration is excellent.

I'm hoping I can get this 1020 unlocked in Pentaband form for TMobile. Using my old grandfathered plan is quite amazing...

  • It has optical image stabilization (OIS) built in
  • It takes the image in a 32MP and 5MP at the same time in 16:9
  • The 5MP image is over sampled dropping 7pixels into one “super pixel”
  • It shoots 38MP in 4:3
  • “Nokia 909” was an early name for it but it will be “Lumia 1020” for release
  • 2GB of RAM, an increase of 1GB from other high end Windows Phone 8 devices
  • 32GB of internal storage, no SD
  • WP8 V 8.0.10322.71
  • FM radio (Amber)
  • Flip to silence (Amber)
  • NFC is on board
  • Optional wireless charging backplate will be available

F2.2 and OIS, low light performance should be much better than on the 808.

I wonder what soc they are going to use. If they use the same as before they need custom chip for camera. Snapdragon 800 would support up to 55MP. I doubt that they use it but we'll see soon.

I thought the 8x used a separate ship for camera processing, so it wouldn't be unprecedented.

makes me a little jealous of at&t customers, but not enough to throw down ETF money and switch networks.

Should have a better resolution display than the 808 at least... Isn't the 808 <720p?

nokia needs to make a better model name. 920 921 1020 ect are not good as iphone, galaxy, one.

Interested on how it will compare to flagship compact p&s. If it's somewhere near it then I'd be willing to switch over from Android. Then again knowing Android it'll probably have a competing phone a month or two later.

It's closer to DSLR and m4/3 than a P&S actually in terms of quality. I posted some examples if you'd like to see. If anything, it will only be better than the 808.

808 was a whopping 640x360

In tests the 808 actually won the cheapest DSLR's.

I thought the resolution was supposed to be the same as the 92x series which is 1280x768 (limited by WP8)?

Like the OIS inclusion. I'm wondering if this will essentially become a standard feature now for high end phones looking to market the camera.

Camera bump would be a great conversation piece :p

To me this is a more interesting (not necessarily better) device than either the S4 or HTC One for about the same off contract price.

I love my 928, and this looks like an extension of the awesomeness it is.

Hope Nokia would surprise us by running WP8.1 on there with 1080p screen. By the time the Nokia Lumia 1020 gets on store shelves, WP8.1 should be either released or close to being released. Heck, even the HTC One WP8 variant is rumored to be released soon after.

I don't think that this needs 1080p screen if it is same size as in Lumia 920. It will work fine in this device and make it more compact. However, I do hope that they plan to release 1080p device (Snapdragon 800).

well.... yes but it is still confusing...... you don't go up to your friends and say hey I got a lumia. There used to be a one x and one s now there is just one.

lol. I say that all the time. Look at my Red Lumia, Ferrari of phones.

There is nothing confusing about it. Iphone uses similar naming scheme. Name and number (and sometimes they add letter after number). Bigger number = high end. Samsung has Galaxy lineup with all kinds of suffixes. Lumia naming scheme is as simple as it gets.

Well Iphone only makes 1 phone per year yes they have other numbers but there is only 1 main one. Most people only recognize the s3/s4 of the galaxy brand . And htc like i already stated is making the One. This goes with the blackberrys as well since there used to be blackberry bold/curve (yes with different numbers for each carriers). Now there is Z10 and X and what ever they are doing. All I am saying it its slightly hard to keep up with if you were not a techy person with lumia 5 6 7 8 9 and now 10 all being sold at once.

Im fairly shocked at how great this camera is, let alone a phone camera. If I were to care about my phone camera quality at all (which is pretty low on my list) this would be a top choice.

A bit disappointed that the phone. The new pure-view WP8 seems more like a lumia 920 with the 808 pure view camera. I'll probably wait until next generation lumia 1030 with WP9

Hopes with WP9 lumia 1030
Quad core
3GB of RAM
1080p 5" display
microsdcard slot (with the size of the photos this is a must)
67MP pure-view camera
5MP front facing camera with AF and LED light
3300mAh battery

A camera that is better than any P&S and you are still disappointed demanding better :p

Question about the battery... ya know, p&s or dslrs allow me to take about hundreds of pics without charging. Knowing my experience from 920, after several pics, the batter goes down way too fast. I wonder for how long the 3300 mAh will last with that kind of camera.

Besides, if the Windows Phone 9 won't work with 1020, it's gonna be useless in a year. I guess, p&s or dslrs are still better in that department. They will always work :)

Ha, I'm not that disappointed about the camera (well a little since its been a year since the 808 and I had hope they had some more improvements). I'm more disappointed with the smart phone aspect as it seems nearly identical to the nearly year old 920.
