The Nintendo 2DS

Oh Nintendo.....why???????

Does this have the XL sized screens? If so I would seriously consider it, actually. I hated the 3D part.

However, they failed miserably by not including a second analog stick.

Screen size is the same as the original 3DS.

Hated the point of the original 3DS? Just turn the 3D off. It's not really that much of price difference to justify coming out with a "new" system/version.

It's paying more for a useless feature (to some people). $30 is a lot at this price point.

Anyone with me in thinking Nintendo intended for this to be as anti-portable as they could get away with? I can see how a 2D only 3DS would be appealing to a lot of gamers. If it shared the same ergonomics, it would probably nearly halt 3DS sales. By using this design, it's a glorified Fisher Price toy. It's great for the kids to play with at home, which opens up a new market for Nintendo. But any real gamer is still left paying up for a 3DS, whether they want 3D or not, just to have a system that is actually portable and doesn't look like garbage.

but you can play the 3DS at home or anywhere....and you can turn off the 3d...so why???

They should' have just made it the nintendo tablet, where it's all one screen. Could be quite cool.

they should have just made it the Wii U controller then....Sort of combined the two. Then they could sell just a Wii U core itself to consumers who buy the tablet console.. or something lik that.

I wonder if they'll make a cheaper version of the Wii-U that doesn't require their monstrosity of a gamepad.

I don't mind the idea of it. I'm just not so sure about the logistics of the pricing and size of it.
I also truly hate Nintendo's weird analog nub type thing. It seems like no matter what I'm doing I manage to press it into a dead zone. I was hoping they'd fix that at some point.

Just another incredibly odd move for Nintendo. I get what this 2DS appeals to and that would be very young children that can't be trusted with a hinged device. I'm sure this new ( sorta) version will be built like a tank. But it does look incredibly uncomfortable. I can't even imagine using a regular 3DS with my big meaty hands. The XL is barely comfortable enough to play on for long periods of time.

HOWEVER what I'm not cool with is it being $130 fucking dollars I mean that's not a savings in my mind. At the minimum a device has to be at least $50+ off from its more expensive cousin to be some kind of deal , cheap attempt Nintendo. For $130 I could buy a pretty nice tablet that can do MANY more things than just play games and what you are really paying for is the benefit of playing Nintendo 3DS games. If Nintendo's intention is to please those not interesting in 3D then ... that's fucking retarded.

I'm more disappointed however that Nintendo , no matter how poorly its doing , seemingly ignores reality. Why the current CEO hasn't been fired is beyond me. Nintendo needs a fresh perspective SO BADLY that it now takes more steps backwards then it probably ever did. The price drop on the Wii-U was totally expected due to how poorly its doing. But seeing Nintendo make bad decision after bad decision is kinda painful.

With the 2DS coming out at the same time as Pokemon Y and X I'm sure it'll be a huge hit with parents. But then afterwards Nintendo will have a confusing marketing campaign to deal with , telling some people to buy the 2DS and some to buy the 3DS. Considering Nintendo owns the portable console market , its biggest competitor just became itself which is something a business never wants to create.

I don't see how it just became it's biggest competitor, when either way, they are making the sale...

Because it has the same exact library yet its a cheaper device with a different look entirely. It will be marketed to those that are interested in the DS without the "3" aspect and parents that want to get their kids the 3DS but something more durable and safe for them to use (since the 3D aspect is not good for the young developing mind).

That also means marketing to the current install base while keeping in mind that they still need 3DS sales but also want their new 2DS to be successful. The Vita doesn't even come close to Nintendo's portable sales either.

Its a tough task for the marketing department. Nintendo should be focused on games solely and reducing the cost of the systems themselves. I bet you if they lowered the 3DS by $20 right around the release of Pokemon this October that it would result in even better sales.

That would actually be pretty slick. A revised Gamepad that houses a 3DS (or perhaps a next gen mobile console) in it, but can also be switched to 'Wii U' mode for compatibility with a Wii U.

I guess it would also be quite a bit like the Vita's capability.

I find this interesting as I tried using my brothers 3ds but it made my eyes bug out and the console was held at an awkward angle due to the hinges. This seemingly fixes those issues making it a serious consideration to me when it ships. 130$ isn't bad at all.

As a 3DS owner, all I can say is that prototype . . . . looks awkward.

Something tells me that they are letting the inmates run the asylum over there at Nintendo. Nintendo really can't afford to be botching hardware product lines.

You shouldn't be in the console forum if every time you have a sum of money dedicated to playing games, the default answer is "BUY TABLET FOR ALL THE ANDROIDS". Honestly, people who are looking at 3DS/2DS/vita are definitely NOT cross-shopping for tablets.

This!

Anyone who has actually gamed on a tablet knows the controls suck ass.

This is less of an issue with tablets that you keep at home, and can plug in an Xbox controller, but at that point you might as well just use the TV because...you're at home, using an Xbox controller :D

I've been holding out for a 3DS lite, and since this is likely to be that very device, I will give it a try in-store before I totally shit on it. I keep going back to my DS after the disappointment I get from touchscreen gaming (for anything more intense than RPGs/tower defense).

Part of the problem with tablets is that you are stuck running iOS or Android and both platforms are horrible for kids games that allow them to actually play. The huge majority of mobile games are micro transaction based shit that kids don't line to deal with.

In android 4.3 you can create restricted profile for kids that actually prevent any and all in game purchases make the games completely safe to hand to any kid.

The problem isn't my kid spending money, it's that the games are 100% tuned to nickel and dime you or be games you can only play for two minutes a day.

"Daddy my sheep are sick I need 50 coins"

Yeah I hate that crap.

Yeah I hate that crap.

It's the reason when I get a new Android phone and I want to get games to show it off, I realize how few there actually are to play on it. And it makes me sad.

The 3DS/2DS could use a good FPS or simulation game (CIV or Simcity), but it has a lot of good games for other genres.

You must be buying the wrong games then. Any popular platform will have it's share of shit, but there are a lot of good games as well.

The real market for portables is Japan, American games like FPS or that sort of simulation just aren't popular there at all. There's no sense in releasing them on a platform where the major market for for the platform hates them.

They've sold 13 million 3DSs in North America/South America. That's still quite a market for FPS games right there.

Even when FPS games get released on mobile, not a lot of people actually play them.

There's like, 2 dozen FPS games available on Android, at least. Call of Duty has had at least 3 releases on the original DS. Someone's made at least a profit somewhere on portable FPS games.

Nah, PC games kinda need more time devoted to them than they currently get.

Then people shouldn't really gripe about the lack of FPS and SIM games on portables. Companies only have so many people and so much time. They put games where the rate of return vs money spent is the best. There's a reason certain things typically land on certain platforms. ;)

You know, there were Civilization, SimCity and Call of Duty on the standard DS. Often multiple copies of each one. I'm hoping the game Renegade Kid (makers of Dementium: The Ward) makes comes out soon. It looks pretty good.

I like the placement of the dpad/buttons. Since I don't have tiny little girl hands, this looks like it would be much more comfortable to hold.

Eh, I might snag one if cheap enough, I've been on the fence for the 3ds already.

Interesting. But really, no hinges? 2DS? C'mon now.

I can just imagine the typical Christmas shopper parents running into Gamestop to purchase the latest and greatest for their kid, and being stuck in mental limbo, debating what the frig the difference is between the 3DS and 2DS, and the regular DS.

Those of you with a DS, I only have one hand working at the moment due to injury, but do you think harvest moon or animal crossing or Pokemon is playable on a 2/3DS with one hand? I've been eyeballing a DS for a bit and the 2DS had caught my eye.

Pokemon is turn based, I haven't played the other two recent to know of you need two hands.

I played the shit out of yellow and gold back in the day and loved it. I can use one hand going back and forth between the d pad and buttons but it's annoying. What's the touch screen used for on the new Pokemon games?

So I just picked up 3 of these abominations for me and roommates. Keep hearing this was meant for kids because they can't break the hinge if there isn't one. But since it's essentially a DS that's now permanently open, I'm finding it fits my hands much better. I'd rather have a 3DS XL overall, but I value the $80 difference more than that.

It's a nice upgrade from the DS Lites we had in terms of features. I like that Nintendo embraced the digital downloads; I can now buy a 32GB SD card, drop it into my 2DS, and download and play games directly from the eshop. It's nothing new, but it's a great way to combat the rampant piracy on the original DS platform.

Generally you can use it to navigate the battle/world menus as an alternative to using the dpad/joystick. The new Pokemon X/Y games use it for mini games (e.g. super training).

Pokemon x/y has a mode that allows you to play with only your left hand. It changes the function of the L button to mimic the A button. It's been around for a while, but you almost never hear about it.
