Nintendo, what did we tell you before...

The 2DS will be $129.99, $40 cheaper than the normal 3DS. The price point will certainly appeal to people who wanted a 3DS, but hated the entire point of the system. Which, judging from a casual Twitter search, is a fair number of video game devotees.

What a joke. Nintendo already had a "2DS" long before the 3DS. Now you can't even fit it in your pocket.

It's significantly cheaper, plays 3DS games and all the downloadable stuff too, and does everything else the 3DS did, except the 3D. I imagine there's a market for it. Still seems fairly odd and silly, though.

The marketing department of Nintendo must be a bunch of trolls. I can't wait to see retailers explain to customers that the 2DS is for 3DS games and that no, it is not an older device.

On the personal side, I was waiting for a non LL refresh of the 3DS, but I really do not know what to make of this... It's just so unappealing to me.

The physical design is horrid. Why doesn't it fold?!?!

I was interested in a split second and I'm not a fan of 3D and a "3DS" at a cheaper price would be interesting... then I saw the design... eww

Someone should tell Nintendo that they are a few months to late to be pulling April Fools Day pranks.

Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to make a handheld that can't fit in your pocket? The premise of a 2D only 3DS is fine, but removing the hing was so dumb. Even a tablet is less cumbersome than this thing.

You'd think that if they released something like this that they would build the circle pad pro into it. This thing looks like a hot mess.

What a joke...

Seriously, how does this crap ever make it into production.

There is some serious crack addiction epidemy going on at Nintendo. Because who the hell thought this was a good idea? Unless its very cheap. But the design, in no way that is portable and what good is a portable console if you cant fit it into your pocket? Not to mention the screens are begging for scratches if you throw it into your bag without protection. That design is unable to protect itself.

Anyone with me in thinking Nintendo intended for this to be as anti-portable as they could get away with? I can see how a 2D only 3DS would be appealing to a lot of gamers. If it shared the same ergonomics, it would probably nearly halt 3DS sales. By using this design, it's a glorified Fisher Price toy. It's great for the kids to play with at home, which opens up a new market for Nintendo. But any real gamer is still left paying up for a 3DS, whether they want 3D or not, just to have a system that is actually portable and doesn't look like garbage.

Jesus Huckleberry Christ.

That thing is huge like the size of an iPad mini and shit. I love the idea of a 2DS as the 3d part of the 3DS makes me sick after like 5 minutes of playing.

....But that design what the fuck. The only thing I can think as to why they'd do this is it cuts the manufacturing cost way down and they make a huge profit off of this design.

Seems plausible. The hardcore gamers are definetly not going to buy this. But a cheap system for kids at home who want to play 3DS games. And parents dont need to worry about 3D screwing up the eyesight (pfft. yeah, right...) of kids either.

I'm thinking this has to do with them getting sued and losing over the 3d without glasses technology.

This would also explain the lack of hinges. Less things to break (and probably cheaper to build)

One less thing to break and one more reason to leave it at home.

I get it, it makes sense as a kids toy. It's just a bit of a cock tease for actual gamers who would really enjoy a cheaper, 2D only 3DS without it being a childs plaything.

Even ignoring the missing hinge, the control layout is fucking horrible.

Which is exactly why I'm considering one of these for my oldest son.

His last two DS's broke at, you guessed it, the hinges.

He doesn't have one anymore (for obvious reasons), but his games are collecting dust and Christmas is just around the corner...

The DS actually had some really nice games on it. Contra 4 was incredible and 2d Symphony of the Night style Castlevania's are always great.

one of the best game for DS , advance wars dual strike.... i still play it on my 3ds

This is perfect for young kids my nephew's have broken their 3ds at least twice the hinges. And they never use the 3d

All you people realize that the 3DS can also be a 2DS if you, ya know, disable the fucking 3D using the slider right? So the argument that it would be good for people wanting a 2D only 3DS is so fucking retarded it makes me feel like I'm in a room with a bunch of crazy people.

Also, it's priced at $130...ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FUCK DOLLARS. Has Nintendo gone full fucking retard? You can get a 3DS for like, what, $30 more? SOME FUCKING BARGAIN NINTENDO! This is always what I've wanted! A horrible design both aesthetically and ergonomically for $30 cheaper than a hand held that you already have that is superior. Good going!

Look, it's not that I particularly care either way as I don't own nor do I want to own anything by Nintendo...but I see them becoming another Sega or Atari REAL fucking quick. Nintendo needs to lay off the acid and actually make a console worth a damn because with the Wii U and now this they are going no where real fast.

Nintendo just lost a lawsuit over glassless 3d tech. Evidently another company owns the rights to 3d without glasses. This could be dodging that issue.

No, the claim was that Nintendo duplicated the technology after the plaintiff demonstrated the technology. Nintendo is paying out the lawsuit, but the terms enable them to keep selling without any real restrictions. Also, the payout is shrinking whenever the plaintiff opens his mouth.

This seems to be a Gameboy Advance Micro thing, where they just feel there is a market for it.

I don't mind the design, it looks maybe easier to hold after long hours (ds/3ds is kinda top heavy and small to grip at the corners)

I don't find anything about the "name" confusing though. Old people are weird like that though - it takes most kids 2 seconds to figure out what's going on and move on with life while old farts are all bitching "it's not right, they shouldn't name it like that, rararararar"

anyways. I wish them luck. as people have stated, there are great games on these handhelds, and this is merely another option to get at them.

It's also worth noting that in some regions of the world, Japan!!!!, handhelds are by far preferred over anything else. So top notch titles are often only on handhelds. Plus it's hard to argue with the price. I loved the DS, shit Contra 4 might just be the best one.

What's to love about the price though? Ooooooh...it's a couple Hamilton's cheaper! SUPER PRICE SAVER! I think I, and anyone else interested in a hand held, would rather spend the extra dollars and get the better designed and, ya know, PORTABLE system.

People can say they like it all they want, still doesn't make it any less stupid...especially the price...make it fucking $100 even or some shit. You can get Android tablets for that price with bigger screens, better hardware, etc for less than $100 so don't say they couldn't do it due to costs. So not only is Nintendo making dumb as shit hardware, they're also greedy too!

I don't see anything wrong here.
This is obviously for the younger crowd and no 3D will make parents with eye concerns feel better.
This will sell just fine. Not for you, not for me.

Honestly, it's called 3DS. 3D.
Its the fucking point of the system.
But of course theres a ton of people that really don't like that for whatever reason(even though thats my biggest selling point, but whatever), this is for them and children with bad eyes.

We get it.. you hate nintendo, and you don't understand this product.

I see this as a replacement for all those ipads I see kids playing with at restaurants. Maybe for kids like my nephew that keep breaking the hinges.

Really, this is all things that DS users have been asking for wrapped up into one. And it's an option -- it's not like if you wanted to play some DS games, you *had* to have this version. You clearly would be a customer of the 3DS, not the 2DS.

I don't think the price tag is too unreasonable. People throw that money away trying to babysit their children with consumer electronics... the market they're trying to hit -- I don't think they're going to blink an eye at the cost or the form factor.

It clearly isn't aimed at anyone signed into these forums, and thats ok. Nintendo can make products that target different audiences, and you can choose not to buy any of them.

I actually know a woman with 2 children that she bought 2 3DSes for last year. She didn't want to purchase the 3ds because of the 3d, design, and price. If this were available for her last year; she would have jumped on it in a heartbeat.

I actually think this isn't a half bad device that Nintendo is throwing out there. No one on this forum will like it, but it's not for us; it's for younger children. Good move and probably not one that is costing them too much either. I bet this device has pretty decent profit margins even at it's inexpensive price point.

I think it's great cuz now I'm more inclined to buy one for my kid. He messed up the hinges on my DS Lite and I cringe every time he wants to play my DSi XL. I'll buy a 3DS XL for myself and a 2DS for my kid and he doesn't like 3D so win!

Unless I find a used 3DS that's cheaper and in excellent condition, I may get one of these to throw into my laptop bag for my work breaks. I don't care if it doesn't fit my pockets and/or fold; if it fits in my laptop bag, then it's perfectly portable.

They should' have just made it the nintendo tablet, where it's all one screen. Could be quite cool.

That's precisely where they are going with this:

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/oh-so-thats-nintendos-next-move

Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions.

Since both screens have the same PPI of 132, it's relatively feasible.

I have a feeling that Nintendo will release a brand-new tablet form-factor based on this very device. The single screen driving this 2DS probably has a resolution of about 400x600 (top screen is 400x240), so quadrupling the resolution (264ppi) will make it competitive with other devices, while not requiring top-shelf hardware to drive the games.

This also makes it incredibly easy to support 3DS backward-compatibility (just draw a black overlay on the screen to separate things). If they use an OLED screen the pure black overlay would look exactly the same as the 2DS border does! This allows them to transition to the more popular single-screen "tablet with controls" form-factor with the least amount of pain.

Slap a Symphony of the Night style portable Castlevania into production and I'll buy a Nintendo tablet on release, that would be great.

This thing is great. It plays all the 3DS games at a lower price with a more durable form factor. The 3DS was neat once in a while, but overall I think kids have problem with it from what I have seen.

This isn't meant for people who just want a 2D only 3DS. If you want the entire experience a 3DS offers, you still have to buy the 3DS, regardless of if you use the 3D. That hasn't changed. This product is not for the people who simply want to turn the 3D off.

Maybe you missed the couple of posts above yours. This is quite clearly aimed at children. They are rough on shit, and the hinges are a weak point. Also being less portable makes it a lot easier to leave the thing at home instead of having your kid want to take it anywhere. And the lack of 3D will appease the people who say that 3D can damage children eyes. The DS and 3DS have a HUUUUGE library aimed at kids. Making the hardware more child friendly and knocking a few bucks off the price is going to mean this is going to find it's way under a fuck load of trees this year, and Nintendo needs that badly.
