So I just picked up 3 of these abominations for me and roommates. Keep hearing this was meant for kids because they can't break the hinge if there isn't one. But since it's essentially a DS that's now permanently open, I'm finding it fits my hands much better. I'd rather have a 3DS XL overall, but I value the $80 difference more than that.
It's a nice upgrade from the DS Lites we had in terms of features. I like that Nintendo embraced the digital downloads; I can now buy a 32GB SD card, drop it into my 2DS, and download and play games directly from the eshop. It's nothing new, but it's a great way to combat the rampant piracy on the original DS platform.
Generally you can use it to navigate the battle/world menus as an alternative to using the dpad/joystick. The new Pokemon X/Y games use it for mini games (e.g. super training).
I'm well over half way filling up my 16 gig card in my 3DS.
