The Evil Within

I didn't get one :(, I've been using GMG for years.

Oh well, when are reviews coming out?

Something seems so strange, even Gamespot reported (well Kevin Vanord, via twitter) said that they didn't get a review copy of the game because Bethseda "ran out."

Lots of reputable review sites coming out saying Bethseda wouldn't give them review copies, but gamespot so far is the "biggest" one that didn't get one.

From Polygon's review:
I found myself frustrated by some of The Evil Within's choices. Boss encounters, in particular, are incredibly frequent and incredibly annoying. With few exceptions, these bigger enemies require very specific, obscure steps to be defeated or a stupidly large amount of ammunition — or both. Most of these bosses also launch into one-hit kill animations if they get in close, but even those that don't can usually drain Sebastian from full health to dead in two or three hits.

Every boss encounter shifted into a similar pattern for me: Start the fight, die, piece together the first thing I'm supposed to do to win, die again, piece together the second and third steps, die again and so on, until I figured out each part of the fight and was able to string them all together without a mistake.

That sounds like a huge positive to me, not a negative!

It's only bad game design if the weakness or pattern is completely arbitrary. I can't speak for Evil Within, but Dark Souls is most definitely not trial and error, unless you have terrible observational skills.

Would be nice to play it tonight but for the last 2 hours its been unpacking. It does not even appear to be 20% done. Hell I downloaded the game several times faster than it can unpack. My hard drive has just been pegged at nearly 100% the last 2 hours.

took 5 minutes to unpack for me, though I am on SSD's here.

Played for about an hour and 20 minutes so far. Had multiple jump out of seat and scream moments. definitely a game to play with the lights off

Well finally unpacked but cant get the damn game to play. It launches in window then freezes up and then Steam stops working. A few others reporting same thing.

is out? hey is it good? working? nothing broken? like as in bugs and we have to wait for a patch? light? heavy? hey! how about some screens goddammit!!

My god is so choppy and stuttery looking around with mouse. I cant play it at all even with framerate at 60. Plus it will continuously drop below 60 even though my gpu is not even close to be utilized.

I found it ran better when it's locked at 30, which is actually 40 for some reason.

Game is locked at 40fps for me. It feels fine, haven't felt the need to change it to 60, yet.

Also, at first the black borders annoyed me, but they add to the cinematic effect I think the devs were going for. Makes you feel claustrophobic, not sure I want to change the width of the borders or not...

Am I really the only one having issues here or are you guys just oblivious? The game feels like garbage and just looking around has some stutter. If I turn around and around it will even grab or hitch. It has nothing to do with framerate and the controller is no better than the mouse. This is by far the worst feeling game and its not playable to me.

Are you playing with vsync on? This is a slow, methodical, crouch walking, stealth, find secrets kind of game. 40fps is enough for that kind of gameplay. Go in expecting textures comparable to Rage and Wolf and a hard survival horror game and you should be fine.

I have the game installed on an SSD if that matters.

Also, go back to locked 30 fps setting.

So whats the impressions regarding the GTX 670 4gb recommended requirements?

How are people finding 3gb vram cards in terms of performance?

I'll be honest right now the most interesting aspect of this game to me is using it as gauge (one of several) regarding VRAM trends at 1080p, particularly 3gb vs 4gb.

Come on now I play plenty of different types of games. I know exactly what type of game this or I would not even have bought it at launch. Its just not playable for me. And I did not even see vsync in the options but maybe I missed it.

Change your setting back to locked 30fps and see if that helps.

Did you try lower graphics settings (if there are any, don't actually have this game) and/or including lowering resolution?

Its not even taxing my system at all. At 30 fps its using about 35-40% of my gpu. After more testing 30 fps is smoother than 60 fps as 60 fps has a pretty bad hitch when panning around even if pegged at 60. They are both horrible though and not the least bit tolerable with the mouse. The controller is better option overall after going back and forth but that is not saying much.

But have you tried? Performance issues may not show up with avg fps numbers or GPU utilization amounts. It may not even be a GPU related (or purely related) performance issue.

Nope, the game is running smooth as butter for me. And I am playing at 3840x2160 downsampled to 1080P. Try re-installing your drivers maybe?

Good game? Looks totally like Resident Evil 4 from the video I'm sure the graphics are better.

Smooth as butter at 30 frames per second? I find that hard to believe. And at 60 frames per second the game does look a little worse from what I've seen. And there are some others reporting the same issues that I'm having so at least it's not just me. Its crap like this though that makes me lose interest in gaming.

Console games locked at 30 tend to look pretty solid, although there's something about PC games that usually isn't as smooth. How does the game look at 60fps?
I'm going to keep watching this thread throughout the day. I really want to grab this one if it's decent.

I'm going to see how it runs uncorked tonight, but I think I'm going to play this one on my TV instead.

Looking forward to hearing some feedback regarding 60fps too. I saw this game on Twitch, looks interesting. But 30 fps on PC is a big no for me.

After reading some reviews and watching videos, I keep seeing "RE4" pop up (they even mention in many reveiws that there's a place that feels almost exactly like the village in RE4).

I thought this game was meant to go back to pre RE4 roots and more towards RE1/2 style of survival horror, less action and more exploration/puzzles and such, that doesn't seem to be the case with the final version of the game though, which to me is disappointing.

Needs SLI support (though I'm told the engine might make that impossible)

That will make me sad as a single card in my laptop can't keep the game at 30fps even with everything on low @ 1080p.

One of the downsides of the laptop being reliant on SLI, means if the game doesn't support it, I'm SOL pretty much.

I love RE4, so if that's how this plays/looks/feels I'm in.
I have more than enough horsepower so I'm really curious how everything looks at a high framerate sans letterboxing.
