The Evil Within

oh well, couldnt resist and got it for no-discount full-blown price blegh.. will report back when it finishes downloading/installing.

What is it about this game that people care about? Don't get me wrong, I'm one of them because I'm a survival horror fan, but it seems like this game would have been obscure. Is it simply because Bethesda's name is attached to it?

Creator of Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami's new studio developed the game.

the appeal is mostly about Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil creator)...people want another RE clone...2nd appeal is maybe id Tech 5 and the megatexture recommended requirements...this game seems like an indie title which wants to be a AAA title...and they got Bethesda to publish it

Texture quality indoors feels like Fallout 3 with heavy use of depth of field. If I had to guess it's the depth of field and dynamic lighting that is eating up performance. A positive for depth of field is it makes everything feel claustrophobic which adds to the tension.

As a note, if anyone is looking to buy, this code works for 25% off at GMG

There is nothing indie about this title, it's one of the best survival horror games to come out in a while.

I agree, this feels like an indie artsy title trying too hard.

I started the game.....not too far in.

I used the console commands, but even overriding the FPS I get barely 40 fps with dual 980s?

I got rid of the letterbox at the top and bottom by adjusting the aspect ratio to 1.8

Unfortunately playing at 5670 x 1200 I lose 2/3 of each of my side screens?

I'm not overly impressed....the guy is slower than shit and it's very much an interactive cut-scene fest so far. Maybe it will get better and hopefully the widescreengamingforum guys will figure out the aspect so I can fill my screens.

Keep in mind, Id Tech 5 uses Open GL, not DX11, so SLI is useless. Accordingly, you are getting 40fps at 5670x1200 with single 980, or is the actual rendered area smaller than this?

Now that Carmack is no longer with id, I wonder if there'll be another iteration of this engine or if they'll just move on to something else.
I believe the DOOM4 preview footage at QuakeCon was running on id Tech 6.

And it gets worse. Pretentious opening unskippable credit sequence. Sigh.

Did you just agree with yourself? :) Anyhoo, based on what you're getting worked up over (seriously?) I'm questioning whether you actually bought the game. Because I know when I spend money on something I tend to give it a chance first - why not?

The first baddie in chapter one murdered me about 12 times before I figured out what to do. So far (chapter 1 completed) it's gruesome, but not scary. I'll definitely give it some more time, I do wish SLI worked though :(

finished installing. fired it up, it detected my resolution correctly (1440p), messed with a few settings, restarted and everything is good so far but im all sleepy, tomorrow i'll try it out, zzzzzzzz...

from the Reddit thread...

The VRAM requirement is bullshit...Here's my findings so far in VRAM usage (single 770 4GB)

1920x1080: 1.6GB
2880x1620: 2.2GB
3200x1800: 2.3GB
3840x2160: 2.8GB

Hmm, seems very strange, I wonder if something got lost in translation.

Maybe some paricular setting only kicks in if you have XGB VRAM, like Wolfenstein?

Not surprising at all. I think its funny people expected the console porting experience would change because of the ARM design..

Turns out its just as fucking shitty.

And yet still playable and an awesome game.

Definitely a awesome game. Just beat it myself. Wow that final boss fight was epic. The story is awesome too, takes a while before you start to understand whats going on though.

The weapon sounds in this game are really good, powerful and loud just the way I like them. Also, headshots where their heads pop like melons are also well done. One of the most satisfying head explosions in any game I've played.

huh, looks great, runs great, some of you girls must have sand in your vaginas. it runs better with v-sync forced off on the driver and with r_forceaspectratio 1.8 it fills the full screen of a 27" 1440p display, using the games smaa with everything else maxed, it looks and runs better than i thought, what a pleasant surprise.

The black bar whining reminds me of the days when people whined about fullscreen DVD's switching to widescreen. I guess people don't realize. You actually see more with the aspect ratio they selected.

correct, and forcing it to a different one just zooms the image in.

I played the game with the default aspect ratio, its fine.

Opinions of this game seem to be either love/hate. I think I'm going to hold out for a sale. Too many hates and too few loves. Plus, maybe some additional patches will clear up some of the FOV and framerate gripes.

Christ on a stick, I suck at this game.

It took me 5 x to kill the first boss and I've died 10 x in total, lol.

Yeah, this game is challenging, but the more I play the more I like it.

Hayden over at widescreengaming amd flawlesswidescreen.org is working on widescreen and Surround fixes. In a few days he'll probably have a proper hack to allow full Surround and proper aspect ratios.:D

the game doesn't have proper 5.1 support?

I only got to play through Chapter 2 last night, but the game looked and played great. I have not yet uncorked it to see how it plays, but I don't know if I need to because it actually looks and plays pretty damned good with the default 40 FPS cap. I get no hitching or whatever while turning really fast like one person in this thread reported. The lighting effects are pretty good for such an old engine, but character models and animation kind of ruin the immersion factor... I thought I would be bothered by the letterboxing, but I didn't even notice them after a few minutes of playing in the dark.

All settings in the game were turned to the highest setting. I tried DSR 4k, but there were some frame drops on my SLI 970 setup, so I settled on DSR 1440p. Even though I was seeing utilization on both cards, the game ran better when I forced Single GPU in the driver control panel. It felt like the same issue Rage had with SLI, so I'm not really surprised or disappointed. The game isn't that demanding to require SLI anyway (with a GTX 970).

I think it played a lot like RE4, which isn't a bad thing. This game is going to pull me away from Forza Horizon 2 for awhile ;).

He means NVIDIA Surround (multi-monitor). I can confirm that surround sound works very well on my setup :D.

Again, SLI not working is a specific issue with the id Tech 5 engine, NOT OpenGL. Please stop spreading FUD...

Sorry, the id Tech games are the only OpenGL titles I'm familiar with, wasn't aware SLI works otherwise . And what is FUD?

lol why would anybody have to ask what a word or acronym means when the whole internet is right in front of them?

Anyway I've only played for about 30 minutes actual game time and I'm still having a bit of trouble dealing with the sluggish performance.
