The Altcoin Thread

I've been gradually selling some here and there when the price is up to finance my growing farm. I have 4 6870 cards I think I'm going to start selling off and pick up more 270-270x cards instead. The 270 cards are just too sweet for mining. You can get 450KHs from each and they sip the power, not to mention the fact that they are only $200 each. I have 2 of them in my HTPC with a 500W Antec power supply and they run awesome.

Did you factor in electricity as well? just say you mined for 30 days with 3 cards, even using a very conservative kWh rate -- I'd wager that something like 50 dollars worth of juice? (im at work and can't go to my normal crypto power calculators)

Either way congrats!

Yup. Electricity has been accounted for.

I should point out that those three 6950 are all undervolted to 1.025v as well, with a very mild overclock to boot. The two unlocked cards push just north of 440Khash/s, the one that's not unlocked pushes a bit over 400Khash/s. I'm estimating about $35/month at my current electric rates, though that's just a guess since I have absolutely no idea what my actual power draw is for the system.

Is any one having any luck under-volting the 270X cards?
I have 4 different models, with varying good results, but they are all apparently voltage locked.
Would definitely like to try reducing the power a bit.
I'm using cgminer 3.7.2 on Ubuntu by the way.

Don't know about the 270X, but I thought my Sapphire 280X Toxic was locked at first. Tried everything and in the end only MSI Afterburner with "extend overclocking limits" setting on did the trick. Maybe you'll have some luck with it as well.

Yeah it is impossible to change voltage under linux, no utilities work/exist

Only bios flashing works.

By the way there is an atiflash for linux but you have to make sure all processes are stopped and I had to flash it several times before it would work and verifiy (always verify the new signature before reboot).

Not for the faint of heart. msdos boot stick is definitely safer but I was too lazy to go run a line to get a video monitor hooked up.

I'm thinking of trying to drop my 7950s to 1 volt or less, currently at 1.09

Remember powertune raises the voltage like another 0.1 volts or so

Good info. Thanks.
I'm running my 7870 Myst pair in the same rig and the hash rate actually goes up just a bit when I drop the volts on them.
By the way cgminer voltage control does work in Linux as long as the card is not voltage locked..

Any way to verify what the voltage is in linux?

I noticed I got crashes with my Sapphire R9 270x at stock settings(At least I believe it was the culprit). I down clocked it a a little bit(went from 440kh/s to 410kh/s, but the WU is now much closer to the hash rate) and now it's working like a charm.

So many cards seem to have issues with the RAM cooling. Did you check VRM temps or anything like that? Another trick is slightly boost the voltage

Well the voltage is locked on these cards I think, I actually haven't googled yet since I was pretty happy with just stock settings. It does get to 69ish though just regular temp, which is a bit toasty considering it's not even in my case(it's sitting outside of it on a few pieces of wood)

That said, I did check the VRM temps of my Twin Frozr right after I stopped cgminer(gpu-z seems to really use up resources when mining) and those were fine. I always thought those got really hot, but I'll have to check that again when I game in the future since it used to artifact when it got really hot.

tbh, while mining the VRM's really don't really do nearly as much work as if you're running games. Remember that you're really only working about 2/3 of the GPU at most when mining. The rest is left completely idle.

That definitely makes sense, and it's probably why over clocks that aren't stable in games are fine for mining, and also why an x1 slot doesn't reduce the performance.

On a sidenote, hot damn Klondike value skyrocketed, doubled from where I sold most of mine. I'm still keeping ~150 just in storage, but damn I wish I had mined more now.

Shush you!

dang I do not like powercolor cards

just spent an hour of downtime fighting one to get it back online, it decided it was just going to take a nap

it's the same one that runs a few degrees warmer so it is probably defective but I cannot afford any more downtime to take it offline

meanwhile the sapphire cards run great, super cool and quiet at same workload

I think it is the shroud design, the powercolor cards cover the edges and prevent airflow from traveling in or out properly

still have to take it apart to re-do the heatsink, has anyone ever done that before with good results?

powercolor is trash. they have the worst service and will never get another dime from me. they cant do anything right.

Bought a Sapphire 7870 for $160 AR today at Amazon. I have a PC with three of these and am going to connect this one via PCIe riser. I keep saying I'm not buying more GPUs yet I keep buying more GPUs. I believe I have an addition... :p

I mined DGB, NOBL, and USDe for 2-3 weeks this month. Today I woke up to a current ROI of over 100% compared to LTC, which puts them in DOGE territory. And I expect more as the difficulty on those coins continues to rise.

Well my ROI is about 2-3 months since I just recently received my cards xD hopefully the value doesn't crash.

"Frontend is down for a few for some db maintenance. Pools are up! "
Message I get.

I decided to try middle coin. See how much I can make over a 72 hour period. Then depending which is better, DOGE or middle coin, I will switch.

I wouldn't mind knowing the results of your test. I've been contemplating moving to Middlecoin myself, but can't bring myself to do it with all of the enticement of riches to be made mining Coin X or Coin Y directly.

To the rest of the [H] forum readers:
For those that have already done the Middlecoin thing, has it made you an amount on par with what you would normally make mining a specific coin directly?

What about Multipool?

And for those that have done both Middlecoin and Multipool, which do you find better?

I've been focusing on LTC as I feel like if any of these coins are going to succeed in the long term, that's the one. Lately I've been mining DOGE and converting it to LTC as it's more efficient, but now I wish I held on to some of the DOGE to cash in.

I still think focusing on one coin in the long run is the best way to go, but I'm a little torn. Seeing these short-term gains go by is nice. Perhaps I should be holding in Dogecoin or Worldcoin or something.

Nerve-wracking!

Damn, Multipool.us said to switch to another pool for now due to database issues but I wasn't at hoem to switch and the pool was apparently still sending/accepting shares so CGMIner didn't fall back to the backup pools. I guess since they are indicating to use an alt pool, the work I did all day isn't going to be counted :/. This morning it said the site was down but pool was still okay to use heh, figures.

I have not tried middlecoin yet, with my little bit of hashrate it would probably take awhile to get a payout in BTC hehe. It seems like a good site that automates the exchange stuff to BTC which is nice but I kind of like having multipool keep the coins as is and ending up with a bit of every coin in case one takes off down the road.

Has anyone tried Poolwarz? For $12 a month it seems like you could easily clear that if it does its job well.

I have some cards aimed at middlecoin and it's working ok. I like it especially when I don't have time to trade myself.

The downside is you could miss out on big profits in the long run since you are not holding onto small coins. Matter of choice...

What exactly does it do that warrants a $12 monthly fee + and extra mining fee?

Seems similar to middlecoin or multipool. No idea how it compares to those or if it's worth the fee. They have a free version as well that doesn't do profit tracking.

One of the pools I was mining on just posted a warning that all pools that use the MPOS front end (especially the latest version) suffer from a bug that allows attackers to drain accounts. It has been confirmed by the MPOS devs apparently. A couple of large DOGE pools were already attacked and some accounts were drained.

This is just what I've heard so far. I was following the news on an IRC channel.

I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but I just thought I'd give everyone a head's up to watch their balances on pools carefully. Cash out now if you can. If this news proves to be true, then the potential is there for a LOT of pools to be affected.

EDIT: The news that one of the major DOGE pools was hit might be true. DOGE network hash rate has dropped by 10MH in the past 10 minutes and the difficulty is set to drop by about 200 points.

I've noticed that dogehouse has been acting really weird tonight, is that related?

I don't know... I heard one name mentioned in IRC and I don't think that was it, but you may want to take precautions just in case. It doesn't hurt to cover your butt in case you have a good amount of coins stored there.

Is it just DOGE that is affected?

No. ANY pool that uses MPOS... which is like about 98% of them at my best guess. Very few use a custom front end. And even then, when they do, sometimes it's even just a heavily modified MPOS.

It was only mentioned in the IRC channel that some large DOGE pools were attacked so far.

Again, not trying to be an alarmist or anything. Just giving everyone advance notice in case this turns out to be a real issue... the problem is still being researched at this time. It wouldn't hurt to cover your butts by cashing out to a wallet.

I always have my auto payouts set to the minimum just in case, sounds like a good policy right about now.

Hmm thanks for the heads up, I can't get anything out of multipool but I withdrew my balance from another LTC pool I use just in case.
