The Altcoin Thread

What do you folks think of mooncoin? too early to say?

I still believe it's complete rubbish, but there could be a pump. You never really know. I'm just gonna mine Doge for now, I've got this month's expenses paid off so I'm good anyways.

It seems to be catching but its too early to tell if it will stick. My advice is to mine/buy into it ASAP just in case it goes big, but I also wouldn't put more than I was comfortable with losing into it.

hah - nope the "collegeboy" nickname was from when I was actually in college... 9 years ago, just don't know of a way to change my username here.

I'm running 6 cards, two 290s, and 4 7970s

I'm almost 32, just bought my first house, and very aware of the power requirements as reflected in my power bill. I think the worst bill I've had so far was $160 dollars. Keep in mind for me, the miners provide free winter heat (as much as you can call winter in north texas)

Where are you in North Texas?

I am right accross the border in NM and loving the cheap electric....

Hmm. yea it seems like moon is going upward, but I dont think i am going to hold it for very long cuz doge is going up too.

Do you guys ever do any trading amongst [H] people? Reason I ask is I'd love to buy some BTC, but I don't want to link my bank account and every other way to get it seems shady.

I wouldn't be too worried about linking your bank account with coinbase unless you are clearing thousands a month.

Yeah I was worried about linking my bank account with Coinbase as well, just because BTC sites are big targets for hackers and it felt risky to put BTC and my bank info on one site that I had only recently heard of hehe.

Not to mention that I was never able to do the two deposit verification method, I had to do the login verification which was even more nerve wracking. So far so good though...

I did it as well(Paypal actually seems to work the same exact way, I prefer to do the quick method). Coinbase is backed by investors though from what I hear and based in the US, unlike many of the other exchanges that are based in Eastern Europe. It's the only way to get money quickly in the US, everything else requires stupid other services which often don't even work in the US anymore.

Paypal is really missing the boat here, even if crypto is an enemy of their business, instead of fighting it, they could simply work WITH it and reap the benefits.

Oh wait, this is the same argument that we use with the RIAA/MPAA and the Internet in general.

The buyer is fucked over too easily with BTC. Paypal needs to keep its reputation up of screwing over sellers!!! :D

The silly thing about the vendors taking BTC, even the large ones which add weight, is that they don't actually take it directly and hold it as BTC

They are just use a conversion service that gives them cash at current usd.

It will be huge news when a major seller starts taking BTC directly without a middleman and without direct cash conversion.

That day may be years if not a decade away though.

Keep in mind the max volume of DOGE vs max of BTC, the market cap for BTC is currently something like 11 billion dollars

DOGE will have a max of 100 billion coins, vs BTC 21 million I believe. DOGE will never even get close to $1.

Now DOGE getting to 1 penny? if some really crazy stuff happened who knows? Nobody thought BTC would ever be $1200.

I'm kicking myself I sold off something like 1.2 million DOGE 2 weeks before the rise... ehhh shit happens. Personally I'm mining what I can and selling it off while prices are high. When you have that fast of a rise in value, I don't see these price levels as something solid (for the time being)

Either way -- until the bubble bursts -- I'm more than happy to be making $50 every day for doing jack shit. :):)
While $1/doge sounds like a pipedream it is possible for something like $0.50/doge or a little less. Once the coins are distributed more evenly ,be it tipping or giveaways, more people will use them and there will be more in circulation. 50 billion marketcap isnt that huge for something that would be used worldwide. And people are more inclined to use doge than btc/ltc because there are more available and its a whole number. But again no one has a magic crystal ball so no one know what the market could do, doge could crash next week and no one would have predicted it.

DOGE getting to $0.01 doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me anymore. It peaked at something like $0.0024 last pump. Since it seems like it's never going below 100 satoshi again, the next "10xing" will bring it above 1000 satoshi. But with a market as large as it is, the higher it goes, the less pumped it can be each time.

I actually really want DOGE to fall back down to ~120 satoshi so I can go all in (already have plenty but I just want more). It's one of the few coins I am holding and am confident it will be 10X it's current value if not more one day. I want another 3M DOGEs so I can be holding 10M+ for the long.

The reason why I don't think doge will go over 1 cent but yet that would be enough is because the sheer number of usd millionares that would be made at 50 or even 10 cents would be astronomical.

There would not be enough buyers at that price for the billion dogecoin that would be up for sale.

At 50 cents I would literally be a usd millionaire and that seems completely impossible.

Litecoin difficulty is now at 3130

it is now 24% easier to mine 1 LTC

well at least for the next 20 hours before it resets again to 4000+

Still not really worth it to mine LTC, even if it were to double in value for me.

but not everyone will cash out entirely and coinbase only lets you take out a max of 50btc a day.it happened with btc and it didnt crash.

The problem with LTC (and all the other alt-coins) is that there isn't a payment processor that allows merchants to accept LTC and get USD.

LTC is still dependent on the LTC/BTC ratio.

There are some payment processors that will take a variety of alts and send you USD but they are considerably smaller than bitpay or coinbase.

I think we'll get at least one big one this year. BTC is just so damn slow compared to LTC. I hate moving around BTC and waiting what feels like forever compared to everything else.

ok so mooncoin seems to have suddenly jumped up in price

That's because it was finally added to Cryptsy.

But, it appears that noticing it now is already too late. The difficulty has already risen and it's beyond trying to get in on the early rush. If you held some MOON from earlier or mined it a few days ago, great! Good on ya!

EDIT: It also appears the early Cryptsy price spike may be subsiding as well.

Last night i traded 75k dogecoin for 1.5 millon mooncoin. I think right now its 3 or 4 times higher. Probably gonna sell it on coinup in a bit once i get home. Then go back into doge while i contemplate my next move.
My first trade ever seems to have been quite successful as long as i get home soon...

it seems to have gathered nice support above 25 so it'll probably be up and down just like doge

I'm glad it worked out well for you!

Ty!
It feels great. Especially cuz i havent spent a single dime since i mined everything and dont pay power.it feels like working the wow auction house

The (safest) solution if you want to dabble with bitcon/altcoin, when it comes to getting the money into your hands.

Create a basic checking or savings account at your regular bank, or a local branch. One that's only used for your crypto. I lucked out in the fact I already had a captial one savings and checking account (and they are not my primary institution)

At any one time I might keep 20 dollars in my checking account there -- that's the account I use for coinbase transfers (incoming and outgoing). If someone hacks coinbase and wants to drain my account, who cares? they got 20 dollars, big deal. (any money i have coming in or going out would spend a max time of 24 hours in that account before it got moved to where it needs to be).

Coinbase has been a dreamboat for me after the Gox-Dwolla avenue crapped out.

If anybody wants to get their hands on BTC without tieing their personal info to it they could just buy a reasonably priced video card and sell it for BTC.

I'd probably sell some for a paypal gift payment but generally paypal/ebay are horrible for selling BTC

Well, I'd like to say I'm officially in the black after yesterday on my mining adventure.

Timeline: I started mining middle of December roughly.
Hardware purchases: I bought 3 6950's, two of which were unlocked (the third is apparently unlockable, I've just been too lazy to do so).
Two nights ago I cashed out my SECOND coinbase transaction, which is slated to hit my bank account on Monday. The two coinbase transactions, I'm net positive in cash flow from mining on these cards.

I wish I got on this boat years ago.

NICE, I've been playing the hokey pokey with that line for about a month now.

so now that you're in the black are you ready to buy more cards?

As I said, I have a 7950 along with a 7870XT (Tahiti LE) in the closet, and a 6850 that should be on my doorstep today. Oh, and my venerable GTX660 just for shits and giggles. It's the land of misfit toys. I picked up the 7870XT for cheap because it was "dead", and I fixed it. The 6850 needs a HSF, I bought it for lunch money. The 7950 was from that TigerDirect "sale" last month. Should be good for another ~1.4Mhash/s right there.

My goal is 5Mhash/s before it's all said and done. The only issues are going to be WHERE to put everything, since my wife has started complaining about the noise.

hey I just joined cryptsy so if any one wants to send me their trade key ill put it in as a referel... not sure if that will do any good for you or not. but if it will give you bonus points or anything feel free to let me know and ill add you as a referer

I made my ROI with doge over the past weekend, watching it go from $700 on friday to $3000 on monday was amazing. Still has stayed about the same too. Not cashing out until i can make a retarded amount of money.

Congrats! Feels doesn't it? ;)

Now, just have to count profits and calculate when to reinvest in more equipment.

every coin has a huge jump as soon as it hits cryptsy then it goes down fast.

Did you factor in electricity as well? just say you mined for 30 days with 3 cards, even using a very conservative kWh rate -- I'd wager that something like 50 dollars worth of juice? (im at work and can't go to my normal crypto power calculators)

Either way congrats!
