The Altcoin Thread

Just looking for a quick answer regarding the current market or whatever.

Would it be worth mining with my 6950 for 9~ hours each day while I'm working? What kind of profit could I expect? I don't have to pay for electricity at all. Could I possibly make more than $10/day doing that? Anything less doesn't seem worth the bother.

The 6950 should get you around 400KH/s~ per hour if you're mining doge you'll only get .24$ so around 2.16$. You could check dustcoin.com for scrypt calc if you want it per hour.

network broke 100 ghash and 1300 difficulty, it's insane

at this rate will be going back to litecoin

Probably not the best attitude to have going into it. I started mining doge as my first crypto a couple weeks after it was created. It wasn't worth crap, but I genuinely believed the community wanted it to work and they did. I am glad I kept mining doge since then and never sold. I just wish I had more to throw at it.

Dammit was looking at my transactions on a pool and missed out on damn near 1k doge from an orphaned block, then another 300, 200. Like 3 in a row.

you guys look at middlecoin today? frack thats nuts, badly wish I stayed with them... most guys around my size are pullin over .2 in payout today

I made close to .14 just riding the Doge wave. I only have about 1.2 mh/s btw. When a pump like that happens, just get your shit on cryptsy real fast and get out when it starts to die down.

I didnt sell any doge. Part of me wants to hold one to it and see what happens. The other part is like "dump this shit".

This is what I'm fighting with as well. What to do with the DOGE I have right now. I said I'd wait until the block reward split to do something with it, but then another part of me is wondering whether things will be as peachy then as they are right now, or if the outlook is even better. I guess it's a gamble.

I think I'm gonna roll the dice and hold it. Its not like I have that much anyways.

Question here - I'm using GUIminer and I have 2 R290's. One is mining at 600 hash and the other is mining at 800-830 hash. What's the deal with the first card only mining at 600 hash? Is that becuase it is running my desktop and other things? Or is something awry.

What's your setting? Did you also check your GPU temps the other one might be throttling down.

Any old school miners from the bitcoin era still around? (circa 2011 or so). Just wanted to announce I'm back full force. :D
Actually been back for a month or so mining DOGE and converting to BTC at Coins-e then trading/churning them at Gox.

Yup, I was into BTC back then, still chugging along with my unlocked 6950

Nice! That's freaking value. Not sure if you remember me posting the latest kernel mining tweaks on the bitcoin thread every week lol. Mining was like living in the wild west back then.

Now it's like living in a mental hospital. If you check the bitcointalk forums it's atrocious. The people in there are so god damn stupid, it's unfathomable. It's like they don't know how to google.

Yup, I remember the updates and tweaking needed to get the GPU to pick up a virtual pickaxe and get to work!

sell half, hold half to hedge your bet so that you're not all or nothing. I've been jumping in and out increasing my holdings since the drops are based around the middlecoin cashouts.

What brands are they?

Here's the thing - it's been found out that the type of memory on the cards has A LOT to do with what hash rates you're going to get on the cards. I forget which is which, but I think if I remember right Hynix == Good, Elpida == Crap. It's a memory timings thing.

I'm still around, you can probably find my posts in the very first threads of btc on [H]. Been on & off since.

I think I will literally frame my good old 5870, which is still mining btw, when it retires! Absolute best investment I ever made!

Back to middlecoin.

This will be fun. Caught the doge knife at 166. Let's see whether I caught the blade or the handle today.

Oh I am sure there will be another doge run before the reward halve.

The halve in theory should make the coins more valuable, or could kill sales entirely.

Looks like my power bill is going to be a whopper, I better sell some.

I think I need to try to get my cards under 1 volt, been pushing this 1000 watt power supply at capacity and it is killing efficiency.

By the way, give-me-coins apparently was hacked sometime in the past day.

Many people report lost coins.

Owners pledge to cover losses.

Does anyone happen to know where to find the formula that determines how many coins can be mined over a given period (excluding "luck") based on block reward, difficulty, block target speed, hash rate, etc?

The online tools that are out there that I've been using seem to be ridiculously optimistic in their estimates. (Coinwarz, coinchoose, etc). Almost like there's a flaw in their numbers or something.

The the important question regarding doge is : What will happen after the reward halve?

That's because they give you best case scenarios. The biggest issue is trying to predict luck. For coins like DOGE and LOT, that's a double edged sword. Both have random block rewards. So, for both, you could have a block that runs long and gives you next to nothing as a reward.

Besides that, calculators cannot predict difficulty gains or losses which will ultimately throw off mining production numbers. And with coins like LOT which have very fast retargeting, it's like a wild turkey shoot.

It's for those reasons, you won't find a calculator any more accurate than anything already out there. Sure they give you what look like inflated numbers, but again, those numbers would be correct if each and every block ended at the nominal number of shares and each block paid the same... it's a best case scenario.

That's what nobody knows yet. If the community is still behind it, then the value may go up. Whether it goes up enough to make mining it still worthwhile is another story.

Worst case scenario, the value doesn't go up, people stop mining it because the reward is not worth the effort, DOGE gets trumped by other coins which become more profitable to mine and DOGE dies a slow painful death or something.

It's all speculation.

I sometimes have a feeling this will happen, but im going to be optimistic and say it either stays where its at or goes up a little.

Yesterday at middlecoin I made .12 BTC with 5MH... it was a good day.

Personally, I don't have the time to devote to trying to day trade.. I like just getting BTC.. every once in a while I trade some of it to an alt to try to catch the ups and downs but it's just too time consuming for me right now.

I sadly wasn't there for the bit coin days, but for some reason people call me an experienced miner when I started December 2013 on that forum :p

If we maintain the current mining rate it will be in about 20 days.
http://cryptocoinstat.com/reward.php?coin=DOGE

has nothing to do with maintaining, or mining rate

blocks are always issued at the same time rate

this is why difficulty changes, to make sure that rate stays the same

so the halve is always at a fixed point in time, plus or minus four hours

0-1,000,000 reward ends on February 14, 2014

0-500,000 reward ends on April 24, 2014.

0-250,000 reward ends on July 1, 2014

0-125,000 reward ends on September 8, 2014

0-62,500 reward ends on November 15, 2014

0-31,250 reward ends on January 23, 2015.

then 0-10,000

then final block May 14, 2015

Something I would try is take whatever the calculator says, and then subtract at least 10%. If the pool is really small you will probably get even less. Check the block finding stats to see how long it takes on the pool.

The flaw in calculators is that people enter their raw mining speed when in reality it is your WU that really counts which can be 10% or more lower.

Then the difficulty can change every few hours for some coins.

Some pools take fees without people knowing.

I always thought that if no one is around to mine the block, then the next block in the chain never gets issued. Same thing with difficulty retargets on some of the coins that were poorly designed. The difficulty spikes and the hashrate leaves, the coin ends up hanging for a long time because the difficulty means the blocks won't get solved in the expected timeframe, meaning new blocks won't be issued in a timely fashion, meaning the next retarget to fix it won't happen in a proper amount of time - which is why coins like CatCoin required forks to fix them.

Again, my understanding of it is probably wrong, but that's how I thought it worked at least.

If anyone is interested in those new fancy usb cable risers, I am expecting my order today.

I'll have some extra to sell too but I'll start a FS thread for that I guess.

Ah I had not considered that situation. Certainly won't happen with dogecoin at least.

But even if no one mined, the difficulty would adjust to retarget later on after it "caught up"

Wow, fast schedule.

I never looked at DOGE's schedule before... I had always assumed it was like many other coins that have a multi-year mining plan.
