Tekken 8

As expected, they went after grabs again. I don't get that. In tournaments for T7 you'd almost never see one land. They're pushing T8 back toward that. I'm glad King still has a few tracking grabs, but they aren't the ones people want/use (giant swing, muscle buster, shining wizard, figure four, etc.).

I can only speak for King, but his changes are fucking wild. They gave him the ability to wave dash...although it never considers him crouching so high attacks will nail him. Attacks out of it (including multipart throws) are faster than they were, though. Muscle buster now leaves him negative and wide open for a mix-up from opponents now! Not sure why anyone would use it anymore vs. the figure four or coconut buster.
DF+2 no longer has a built-in delay. You can just crouch and fire it off immediately. F+3 into DDT no longer requires any timing at all, but you're minus on block. FF2 now leaves opponents negative...but is still slow as hell and tough to use. Some of his older standard juggle combos have tighter timing and/or don't work 100% of the time, too.

With all of that + the universal changes to the game it feels quite different playing King now. He's better in some ways, but I can't tell if that's just a smokescreen. The wave dash thing seems neat, but he doesn't have any lows out of it and doesn't crouch...so it's not really all that great.

Been seeing a lot of Kings and Kazuya's the last 2 days. Ran into about 10 kings yesterday in ranked, 2 today. 8 or 9 Kazuya's yesterday and 5 today. This is at blue ranks, which is a pain in the ass because Blue is where high level players default to on alts. Fortunately the prowess based match-making is only matching me with people up to around 250k. Still getting my ass kicked a lot though. Also surprisingly running into a lot of Azucena's which I hardly ran into any on the last patch.

I still play normal quick matches. The best players I've still ever encountered have 0 points or some random total under 10K. Like they played ranked 1-2 times to get the achievement and then never again. Occasionally I'll get paired with someone with some score between 150K-300K and they're usually cocky as hell and get blown up.
As far as character stuggles go, I have issues with Hwoarang, Steve, and Jack. Hwarang and Steve because their strings are very "knowledge check" heavy. You either know when to dick punch them or they can just keep spamming strings all day. I really miss the push back from the older games when things mostly went back to neutral after each string. With Jack, it's just the sheer damage he gets off his quick launchers. Especially in levels with walls. I feel like he can keep trying to crouch in bad scenarios because the payoff = 60% damage + advantage if it ever works. Feels like a lot of Jack players aren't even working on fundamentals, they're just wizards with hitting WS2 off jabs and not dropping combos.

Both Namco and Capcom kinda dropped the ball with their announcements at EVO. It's tough to get excited about a cutscene when it's a fighting game. Show us some footage - if the character is coming this year, they have some by now. Ditto with Terry in SF6.

The event itself was pretty wild, though. Arslan clutched things out vs. an army of Dragunovs. His way of getting close and snuffing everything out with pokes is so unique. It isn't always as exciting as watching giant combos or flashy tech, but it's super effective. It's tough not to think of him as the unmatched GOAT at this point. At least for the modern-era Tekken titles. 5 EVO titles for the same series is wild.

Once Evo hit the top 24 you could really start to see the skill gap between Pakistani players and the rest of the world. It was absolutely on another level. I thought Atif was going to win the tournament he was so dominant, I was rooting for Arslan Ash and Nobi though in the top 6, hoping for an Arslan vs Nobi final, but Nobi got absolutely destroyed in his matches against Atif, losing 9 rounds in a row. I'm glad Arslan shut him down twice, Atif's gameplay is incredibly oppressive. But that Feng pick in the Grand Finals did have me on the edge of my seat. This Evo was awesome, I wish Speedkicks made top 6 he was literally 1 hit away.

Lidia is very fun in Tekken 8, good movement, moderate difficulty, parry and counter-hit heavy, good combo damage, and decent evasion. She has bad frames though so she can't be too aggressive. She is inherently is a "snowball" fighter due to HNE, she gets stronger the more charges she gets (max 3, but cannot lose HNE charges), so as rounds progress she is more difficult to deal with. She is very weak without charges though, probably among the lowest tier fighters. The charges make her more top-tier though towards the end of the fight, not as strong as Dragunov, but I would say she is slightly below Jin since she has worse frames.

If Heihachi is anything like Eddy and Lidia, he's going to be super strong and he'll be the only character you see anyone play for months.

He looks like he is Lidia v2. I kind of wish they kept him Heihachi. I've been playing Lidia since she came out, was looking forward to switching to Heihachi, but now not so much. I will give him a try, but it seems like he will have the same issues Lidia does.

Looks like they rolled out a new story mode along with Heihachi. It's corny, but it's at least something new and a value add. I tinkered around with the character a little and he seems pretty strong. Granted, I didn't play the last few Tekkens much, but it seems like nailing hellsweep juggles = super easy now. In the older titles, you really had to be quick or get people in an odd floating state to land much. In T8 you can get things going off pretty much every launcher I tried.

Anna having a bazooka club is...interesting. Not sure why they keep giving characters who have perfectly fleshed out movesets gimmicks and weapons. I don't mind the choice, though. I'd rather see Marduk or Armor King, but at least Anna has a solid legacy and plenty of fans.

...and in a strange twist of fate, Namco promised a bunch of new defensive options and strategies for Season 2. Yet when the patch actually launched, there was none of that. Instead, they buffed almost the entire cast with a bunch of new pressure tools and literal 50/50 guesses. Even the formerly low tiers are laden with exploits. The hardcore players are losing it, too. I've never been happier to be a casual as I think I've gotten my Tekken fix for a while. Harada is trolling everyone in real time.

This update killed my interest in the game. They just made everything people hated about the game even worse.

My interest had pretty much already waned well before the update. I blame Tekken's approach to piling content on top of an existing base game for 35 years. It's fun and fresh for a while, but then deja vu kicks in again. Even though I don't like Street Fighter 6, it's at least a totally new game. Comparing it to Alpha 3 or Capcom vs. SNK 2 and it's night and day. Like a different franchise, even. With Tekken 8, it's like we're still playing Tekken 3 with bigger movelists and a turbo button.

Based off the trailer I concluded that Lucky Chloe is probably coming in the fall.

The best thing about the Fahkumram trailer = the last 30 seconds where Armor King is revealed as the next DLC character. He's popular and an "honest" character that doesn't have a bunch of high damage roulette wheel gimmicks. Along with some of the other core gameplay changes they're proposing, I'd say AK's a little bit of an olive branch.

That said, you can really tell the Tekken community is getting fed up. The return of a favorite character would normally be fantastic news, but people are getting sick of paying for DLC characters that are 90% the same as they were in the last Tekken game. They were paid DLC in that one, too. I think all of this seems to be hitting everyone at once. Probably because Tekken 7 is the first Tekken title that required people to pay for characters as DLC. It's old hat for other series' but it's new to Tekken and it's a series that doesn't deviate much between games.

Fahkumram is an interesting one. I kinda like the character and appreciate that they bothered to do new motion capture work rather than re-use stuff they got for Bryan and Bruce many years ago. At the same time, I think we all know his design was leftover from Tekken x Street Fighter. Dude was supposed to be Sagat. IRL Thai muay thai fighters fight in lower weight classes and are infamously durable, but slow-paced. The heavier weights are pretty much dominated by the Dutch and Europeans, who have their own style. That's closer to what you see from Bryan and kinda/sorta Josie.

Gotta admit that Armor King looks completely badass. Lots of fun stuff, and more grapples this time. That little sneaky low at 1:05 is what he has always been missing, too. That's the kind of move you see the top tier characters using to open people up. Hopefully it isn't his only quick low. I can't see myself going back to Tekken 8 long-term, but I'll definitely pop back in when AK drops.

Armor King will be dropping next week. Here's Lil Majin (one of the best King and AK players of all time) checking out match footage and going over the movelist.
Not sure I'll go back to playing this competitively online, but I'm at least excited to play around with the character offline.

Miary Zo seems to have struck a nerve within the fighting game world. Some people think she's offensive, some think she's phoned-in, and it doesn't seem like anyone actually likes her design. I see her as just boring. I don't know why she needs to exist in a world where there are a bunch of missing characters with similar designs/moves.
Oh well, at least I have Armor King. If/when they add Marduk, I can ignore whatever else they decide to do with Tekken 8.

Personally I think she looks great, her body is fantastic, when I saw her boobs I was like "whoa, my new main". My problem with her is she is likely an install character and probably will be an easy stance character like Lidia or Azucena. I hope shes more difficult like Xiaoyu.

"Fighting game world" ? I doubt that very much as 95% of the T8 playerbase quit the game, on a good day there's usually around 8-15k concurrent users, about 50/50 pc/console.

I still play occasionally as there's still fun to be had but I can also see why many left - the devs made too many changes that not only long term but also casual players don't like. There is still time to turn it around but I don't think it's a priority for the current devs the way they've been communicating.

Just because they aren't playing the game anymore doesn't mean they won't take the time to complain about it ;)

Something interesting I've noticed - I think whatever input system they were using in Tekken 7 seems to be back. I always felt like some moves just weren't coming out correctly in Tekken 7. When T8 came out, all of that went away. I was pulling crazy stuff like running giant swings and combos with 4 godfist uppercuts with a 75% success rate. Now it's like my inputs aren't working right again. Even normal stuff feels like it's not working right. I dunno if it's the game or how Steam handles PS5 controllers, but even playing in practice mode I'm struggling a bit.

I thought she was praised for her design and portrayal of African fighting styles.

It's the internet so you have to assume reactions will be negative, but I think I've seen more people harping on this poor character than any other I can recall. I think she's the perfect storm of unimaginative and bait for people to take offense. Bland moveset from a generic art that might not actually exist, "person of color" where shading apparently matters, gigantic boobs, anime aesthetics, designs borrowed from existing non-present characters, etc. Tekken 8's reputation at the moment obviously isn't helping, either. It's a perfect storm and Harada seems to relish irritating people as long as it doesn't affect his bottom line.

It's mainly people on twitter complaining about her design. They keep cherry-picking a single concept art and saying her skin tone doesn't match that specific concept art, while most concept art was closer to her final design. These people don't really understand what "concept" means apparently.

I've been tinkering around with Armor King a bit, and I'm pretty impressed with the depth and detail they put into him. Lots of fun details with his pre- and post- fight posturing, growls, new moves, and even just how his moves work together to set things up. If I were still super competitive like when I was younger, I'd be having a field day. I don't think he's going to be top tier or anything like that (he lacks damage from stray/single hits and he's often unsafe), but I really like the character design.
