TechNet changes

Sure, no prob. I'm leaning towards renewing at the Standard level, which provides me with a $50 discount, as I really don't need Enterprise-level software, the online courses, nor more keys than I already have. The only thing that's holding me back is that Microsoft isn't offering anything exciting for that additional 13 months, as I'm not interested in WHS. I would be interested in an integrated 7 w/SP1, but I can get that from "other sources".
 
Am I understanding this correctly there is no real discount for renewing at this point?

Not that I can see. Unless you're willing to downgrade to the Standard level, there are no renewal discounts I've run across for the professional level, as it's still $249.
 
gah... Technet keeps calling me. I've told them I'm not renewing until Vail is out, yet they still call. If they keep this shit up, I might not even renew when Vail is out, WHS is doing fine.
 
This is awesome. Got my pro sub and have been going for the servers for my ESX box to do some great testing, which is awesome considering I work in the field and now have the stuff to play with and learn.

If you value your freedom, how about abiding by the law then? The contract is VERY clearly spelled-out in the terms and conditions you agree to when you use/purchase/otherwise these Technet licenses. It isn't an "opinion" it is plain fact, spelled out extremely obviously.

Seriously, you think that using these for business use and anything BUT what's spelled out in the terms and conditions is a) morally OK or b) legally OK? It's an unfair "advantage" in business to be using these, as well as against the license. You may as well warez it if you're going to be doing that. For home use, it's still no better than warez'ing, but at least it doesn't impact other people as much.

Glad he did point out the rules... it helps to have a plain-english explanation of these things "at a glance" sometimes. If one were to read this thread, they'd think it was A-OKAY for business licensing and some "amazing secret" that no one knows about: truth is, they're just alternate versions of warez'ers, nothing more, nothing less.
 
Mine expires in sept 30th and I was considering not renewing. But will renew if I can downgrade.

How do I renew using standard? when I hit renew it brings up the discount code page and vat box but no choice to downgrade to standard, also does standard keep it at 10 keys per product?

As far as legality etc. goes, if you testing drivers its legal, so it is testing 'anything' that will cover you. Obviously things like selling on the keys isnt within the terms as well as using the keys on expired subscriptions. But lets face it, microsoft dont care, this technet probably stops many people resorting to using pirated copies so for microsoft it is better than the alternative. I will go as far as to say that this new standard version is in reality aimed at home users, a person working for a corp wont care about the price difference. I also expect the vast majority of technet customers dont use all the keys, I personally use 3 win 7 keys and 1 office key.
 
One of those people here who either upgraded or just bought the Standard edition, can one of you check to see if Small Business Server 2008 Standard is available for your use?

I used to have the Professional last year which included it, and the Excel Spreadsheet breaking them down does not have a check box next to SBS, yet it does for Essential Business Server which makes no sense. I am thinking that since the line says "Standard and Premium" that if it includes only one, it would not be checked.

I am more interested in the new SBS's coming out later this year, but if 2008 Standard is there, then Aurora and/or SBS 7 should be available too.
 
Does TechNet ever stop calling you? My account expired in July, I was in a grace period for 30 days. I have no interest in renewing this year. I have been getting 2 calls every week from them, the first time they left a voice now mail, the second time I answered and told them I was not renewing. Now they just call get to my voice mail and hang up. Really getting annoying.
 
I don't have standard, but Professional....SBS 2008 standard shows up on my list.
 
Yes, I had it under the Plus subscription, however if I am going to re-sub, it would be specifically for the new SBS and WHS products. If I can get away with a Standard sub for that, then I would do that instead.
 
Anyone else get the # of licenses you're allowed changed? I subbed to normal about a month ago and used to have 10 keys available for every product. I've claimed 5 for win7 x64 ultimate, but now all the OS's say there's a max of 2 keys (under win7 64 it says 5/2 claimed/max)

Thanks for inquiry. The thing is to support reducing piracy activity attacking the TechNet Subscription Program, changes have been implemented by the upstream team to the volume of keys possible to claim on the download site for high risk products.

Everyone who picked up a copy should give a call to TechNet Service Center at (800) 344-2121 to deliver your feedback. I know I plan to call them and extract my pound of flesh over their change.
 
I guess it really boils down to if you need more then 20 activations for testing purposes. Obviously the Technet program is coming under scrutiny if they are willing to make a silent change like that.

Otherwise, you could use the Windows 7 Enterprise edition, which has unlimited activations, and has the same feature set as Ultimate.

Other then that, has anyone checked their Standard Subscription for SBS 2008, I am just about to pull the trigger on re-subbing, and want to make sure that I am not going to screw myself by going for standard.
 
I am most likely going standard myself. My keys were reduced from 10 to 5 maximum. Which to me isn't a problem. All my products are using in virtualization, and testing. Plus if you need a 6th product, you can use the K and N version of OS anyhow.

Does standard drop to 2 total? What's the deal? Also do we still have access to Visio etc? And Office Premium?

This is kinda of annoying, because I didn't go nuts and claimed all 10 keys, because I never thought I needed them, but it was nice to know I had extra. Now I am limited retroactively. Wish they warned us at least!
 
What it boils down to is we're not getting the number of licenses we originally paid for. I smell a class action law suit coming on.

Others have tried this crap in the past and have gotten burned.
 
Yes, I just spoke to them. Apparently, the EULA did not mention how many keys we were alloted, so they claim they can change it any time.

Now, there might be a good contract claim there based on reliance, but is it worth it?
 
Don't know if we will get those keys or not. What I did do this morning is get *EVERY STINKING KEY* this time, before they pull the same sort of crap on the server side.

I'm so letting someone else deal with the Office migration now.

That is what I did when I found out about the change. I had only gotten 5 or my 10 keys on certain products. I am in the process of getting the rest of the keys before they change again. I had been thinking about pulling all 10 keys but really did not see a need, wish I had. It now says 5 of 5 used. If you have the standard it is now 5 of 2. I probably will never use the 5 X 10 activations, but I don't like the way they changed the rules in the middle of the game.

Sub up for renewal, and debating whether to get a new subscription or renew existing. Don't see much use in renewing existing subscription as I have already pulled all the keys.
 
I don't think I will be renewing for now, until they get their facts straightened. If they gave forwarning, I'd be fine with this. Did not like the way it was handled, I understand some people were gaming the system, but its just like DRM debacle, I hate being the paying, legitimate customer that gets screwed because of a few.

If I have multiple things to test, laptops, desktops ect. can I install 7 enterprise on all the machines, 10-15 and use the Enterprise key? Is there a limit to the number of installations that I get with the Enterprise key that I have? Also what are the differences between normal and K/N. I know that the K is Korean, but is actually in the Korean language? IF i use those are there things that I need to do to make them work? Thanks in advance for any info. I am working on understanding building a server and using a domain. I know that I could use virtualization but I would rather practice the installs.

500 installations I believe and I have read that the key will also work for The Pro version. I believe that N is the European version.

Glad I took your advice because I now see 10/2 on the server side with standard. Still pisses me off as I never abused the system, I'm a MS certified person, currently employed in IT, and use the system as it was designed.

I got my sub back in August and the very first thing I did was claim the max amount of keys on every single item on Technet and then stored that in a PDF. I was worried something like this might happen so I guaranteed myself the keys that I paid for.
 
I just don't get these guys. So glad I grabbed all the server keys when I had the chance. I'm seeing 10/5 keys on the server side for the 'normal' subscription.
 
Oh that is what K and N is for? Shit, I installed both of those OSes and have not seen a difference.
 
After M$ was sued for embedding IE. Difference versions due to regional lawsuit.

K = Korea
N = Europe

Lol. I see they reduced the number of keys for Vista down to 5 as well. I thought it was a hoot that they reduced Win7 and XP, but left Vista alone.

Going to be a fun call on Monday, as the server changes totally mess up the VM test plan.

I already called them, with a similar issue (we had planned for more keys) and got 'tough luck, we never promised you any number of keys'.
 
I was discouraged as well when I saw that the keys were reduced. Luckily I already claimed them all and wrote them down. I have to make a call on Monday as well. I just renewed about 2 weeks ago.
 
Don't pay technet retail price. Spend 1 minute and google Technet Cupons. Save yourself 50-100 bucks.
