TechNet changes

my technet pro sub is up in a couple weeks, from browsing this thread I see you do not get new keys when you renew.. so whats the point of renewing? I have all the keys already.. I thought you would get more keys after renewing.. not worth it for me anyways it seems to renew.

If you don't renew, unused keys won't activate correct?

Because one of the benefits of technet WAS the ability to test all kinds of systems at once, in different scenarios etc. Now, instead of being able to test 10 machines at once, you can test 2. Suddenly the returns on the expense have become significantly less appealing.

Each "Retail" key is good for 10 activations, so, unless you are testing more then 20 machines at once, you arent really missing anything. Not to mention, that many of they keys on there are Static Activation and Multiple Activation keys.

And for those who care, I pulled the trigger on the Standard subscription, and Small Business Server 2008 is included.

Those OS keys may be good for 10 activations, but they are tied to the computer they are activated on. You can't have the same key activated on more than 1 machine at a time. so, you can only test 2 machines at once. That is why keys get blacklisted. They are found to be activated on more than 1 machine at the same time.

That is not true for Technet Keys, they are specifically made to be activated more then once in different configurations. I have personally used the same key on 6 client VMs and 2 server VMs at the same time. Each with differing configurations, enough to trigger a re-activation if I copied one to another.

So can I be really lazy and ask someone whose gotten a refund what # we can call? I know it's probably on the page, but there's probably a few different ones and I don't wanna get bounced around.

Ordered like 1.5 months ago, this could turn into a great deal depending on how you look at it.

Woot I think MS finally gave up on calling me to renew my TN account. Haven't gotten a call from them in in over a week.

The 25% off code only works on the Professional or the Professional with Media, not the Standard.

thought I read someone in this thread mention they canceled theirs and were still able to activate their codes.
If you don't renew, unused keys won't activate correct?

So what's the deal... anyone know? If you already had keys, how would they block them? I imagine they should all still work, since you "paid" for em.... no?

They are retail keys. They will continue to work. Those who say otherwise are clueless drones.

Keys will still work, but Microsoft does explicitly state in their terms that they reserve the right to disable keys. Basically, don't go activating your entire LAN with one key and you'll be fine :p

Anyone have any updated codes? The last one mentioned "TNITQ413" appears NOT to work for Pro subscription :(

so I got curious and decided to necro this thread. I have a question to anyone who was part of this thread, and for those IT people who use technet legitimately or one of the assholes who intentionally abused technet. One poster repeatedly said that all of this abuse would cause them to really reduce what was offered technet and he turned out to be entirely correct. Was it really worth screwing over the IT people who actually benefited from technet the way it was intended to work.

Do you have facts and references to support what you say about "assholes" abusing Technet ?? If not, then STFU. People like you who spout bullshit just love to play the moral cop for the rest of us. Who the hell do you think you are ????

The original deal was pretty rediculous. 10 copies of just about every piece of software. I literally give these away to my family from the subscription I got 2 years ago and I still have about half of the licenses.

Now its down to 5 per product I believe. Its still PLENTY.

The only ones I would say were truly abusing it were the ones that resold the licenses on sites like ebay.

I paid I think $250 and I think it was a fantastic deal. 6 computers in my house that all have either Win 7 or Vista and Office (2007 or 2010).

I also think each key can be activated 10 times whilst a normal retail key is once.

It was clear what technet was for from the beginning. Giving the keys away was clearly not allowed or intended. And your class action lawsuit spew was hilarious.

I didn't tell anyone what to do. I didn't say anything about anyone's morality. What I did say, and its a pretty well known fact, is that those who abused technet, both key resellers and mass key gifters, are to blame for the massive reduction in the things included in technet: it is something that one of the posters said would happen, and others told him he was wrong. And as far as you are concerned, all of those keys you were "entitled to," were not entitlements. You weren't "entitled" to anything. This isn't something along the lines of EULA where someone is telling you can't resell a videogame. Technet is a service that you subscribe to test out MS software to troubleshoot and learn. Not a 99% reduced priced all you can eat software pack. So once more I did not tell you not to do what you did. But I am stating that what was being done and still is being done with Technet is assinine, and I asked for others' opinions on the topic.

Who's to say that Microsoft woudln't have changed the rules on their own? Without any evidence, all we're doing is theorizing and in the end is ultimately pointless.

Two licenses with 5 activations each is still pretty generous.

I think I saw on my last renewal they are dropping the keys from 5 to 3 at the end of February. I think this is my last go around with Technet. I'll get Windows 8 this year and that's it.

my TN is only two keys per SKU. Quite difficult to test multiple computers interacting at this level, but no issue with serialized reactivations on different hardware.

Really wish the level was around 4-5 per SKU.

Actually when the program started it was for people to use as a testbed to encourage purchases. It was not for IT groups to experiment with or learn about, it was to be used as a marketing tool. As such I think it serves its purpose. If people buy technet and give away the licenses then MS is getting value from it. I got this from a MS rep while working for the licensing division of Insight, so take that for what its worth.

With the announcement that the professional subscription is going down to 3 keys, do you all think that if I get a subscription now (while the 5 keys are still valid) this will carry over to windows 8 when it gets released? Or do you think that only the current products will be allocated 5 keys and future releases will automatically only come with 3 keys (during the time the subscription is active of course)?

if it goes down to 3 keys then likely it will be as before they will just cut it without notice mid subscription.

also that will make it very bad value compared to the standard subscription.

Previously, they added the Office 2010 keys to my account when I was a subscriber.

However, if you're waiting for Win8, I would wait for win8 to become available on Technet before renewing subscription.

Posted on Technet...

Beginning in mid-March 2012, subscribers to TechNet Subscriptions (excluding TechNet Standard which are entitled to 2 keys per product) may access a maximum allocation of three (3) product keys for Microsoft Office and Windows Client products in connection with their subscription. The allotted keys may only be used for software evaluation purposes. Once the maximum keys have been activated, no more keys will be made available. Additional product keys may be acquired through the purchase of an additional subscription.

I had to sign in to see the message.

Could you still get 3 keys per SKU?

3 for windows 7 home, and 3 for pro, etc.
