Hi,

Before I start, I want to say I am positing this under the video card section because I still think that may be the problem. However, I cannot confirm this. I already made one thread, but in light of new details and information I wanted to start fresh. I will try to be as clear and detailed as possible in hope of solving this.

Problem:

Computer "soft freezes" from time to time (randomly). What I mean by soft freeze is that I can still move the mouse, and within 1 minute or so I can pull up task manager with ctl+alt+del. A hard reset is not required.

Problem typically happens while gaming, but has also happened during firefox use. I do not know if is is the same problem or two separate issues. After hitting "end process" about 5 times everything unfreezes and my game typically keeps going and I can play.

System Specs:

- Windows 7 64-bit Professional
- Intel Core I7 860 Quad-Core Socket LGA1156 @ 2.80 GHz
- Antec TP-750 Truepower 750W Continuous Power Supply
- Corsair XMS3 Classic 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz
- ASUS P7P55D LE Motherboard
- Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD1500HLFS) 150GB SATA 10000RPM 16MB Cache
- Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA 1000GB
- Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW 24" LCD Monitor
- BFG GeForce GTS 250 1GB Video Card
- Ben-Q X-730 Pro Wireless Keyboard/Logitech G5 (2nd Gen) Gaming Mouse

What I have tried to remedy the problem (none of which has worked or found a solution):

1. OS: downloaded all available update and service packs

2. Processor: Ran two separate stability tests. Both have zero issues and stability is perfect. Temperature is will within normal range, fan works.

3. Power: Supply running fine, fan working. Temperature within normal range

4. RAM: Mem Test both sticks. No errors. Both running fine and computer recognizes them correctly

5. Motherboard: Newest 1408 Bios updated. Temperature within normal range

6. Hard Drive: HD Tune tests and manufacturer tests. No bad sectors, no warnings, no errors. Running fine.

7. Graphics Card: Originally I thought I was maxing out the card and it was causing my system to freeze, or perhaps it is over healing. I have been running GPU-Z to monitor temp and load. The card has never reached 100% load, nor has it ever used more than 750MB of the available 1 GB of RAM

This problem has happened when RAM use was at about 500MB and GPU load was at about 30%. Highest temp the card has ever reached is 68 C, and the fan has never even had to go past 60%

I have run both the 3D Mark Benchmark and ATI Tool to try and re-create the error. Neither was able to and both finished without a problem.

I have lowered my game setting from 1920 all the way down to 1200 and scaled down the in game settings.

The thing is I ran my game (World of Warcraft) at 1920x1024 resolution and all settings on ultra from January until May without a problem...

I am officially at my wits end with this, it is driving me nuts and I need some possible suggestions. I can't even do an RMA on any hardware part because I can't get a single error or bad test on anything. It is like my computer is haunted.

Please Help! :(

Do you have a dif vid card to try in system?

No I do not. This was my first PCI-E System, I only have the one.

What is sketchy is that during the 3D-Mark benchmark test I as watching GPU-Z and the temp was the highest it has ever been, and the GPU load was at 99%. It didn't freeze, it didn't even blink

The BFG staff told me to run those tests and re-create the problem before starting an RMA. I can't re-create the problem....Happens when I least expect it, sometimes once every few hours, sometimes I can go days

I had a similar problem with my original EVGA GTX280. I had "soft" shut downs at first and then had hard shut down (BSOD). I RMA my card and then sent me a new GTX285. All smiles right ... nope 2 weeks later problem returned. I sent back my ypower supply (got a new one). Problem was still there. Anyway after a total time of about 7 months I RMA the GTX285 for a new one. Now my system has been stable and ruuning great for about 6 months. Moral of my story when you tried everything ... try the video card again!

The video card still seems like the most likely candidate. The crappy thing is that I do not have another one, so if I am going to RMA this thing and not have a computer while it is gone I need to be sure that is what the problem is.

Is there anything I can run to to find out for sure if this card has a problem or not?

Update:

Problem just happened again. Game settings and resolution were turned down, in fact I wasn't even playing. I was tabbed out searching the web in google chrome when all of a sudden i can't click on anything in Chrome. I alt tab to find out the game is locked up. I can alt tab between all programs open, but all are unresponsive until I end process the game, which is listed as not responding. When I do that everything else frees up and I can use it again.

When this happened the Memory use on the card was under 500MB and GPU load as 6%. Like I said I was tabbed out and I my character was standing still not even moving.

arhhhhhhhhhhhh what the hell is causing this. I am totally stumped and i have exhausted all knowledge I have trying to fix this. I literally have no idea, nor have i been able to run any test on anything that gives me any errors or problems

Just a thought but does your PC have a built in graphics card (does the motherboard have a vga plug on it) and if it does try removing your graphics card and running on that, if the problem persists then it's not your graphics card and a full format is in order

I do not have built in graphics. I called BFG tech support again today. The guy says if I can't get the card to give any errors during testing I can't do an RMA, it's not my card. I am starting to think he is right

He told me to download BurnIn Test. Which I did.

For the last two hours I have used it to test every single hardware in my system at 100% load. Not one single thing failed, including my video card. I did the video, 2D and 3D tests at 100% load for 15 mins each. All passed no problems.

At this point I have no proof of any hardware failure.

When this problem started I did a full format. That was a week ago. The format fixed nothing, problem is still there

Ok, at this point, start all over with the troubleshooting to double check that you did in fact rule out all the hardware. Some tips:

[Testing the RAM]
Download Memtest86+ v4.00 or whatever the latest version is, unzip it, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Let Memtest+ run for at least three hours on each stick of RAM separately as well as test the RAM all together. Go for a full 24 hours if you want to be completely sure that the RAM is not a problem. If you start seeing errors, than your RAM is defective or you have incorrect settings for the RAM.

[Testing the Hard Drive]
Download the CD image of Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, burn the ISO file to a CD, and then boot from it, just like you would do with the XP/Vista install CD. Test the hard drive and see if any problems are found. DFT will run on most manufacturers' hard drives. Alternatively, you can use Seagate's SeaTools for DOS to test a Seagate or Maxtor drive. For a Western Digital drive, you could use Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS to test a Western Digital drive.

[Testing the CPU]
Use Prime 95, OCCT, Orthos or Intel Burn Tool to stress test the CPU.

[Testing the GPU]
Use Furmark or ATI Tool to stress test the GPU. If you see any artifacts, the GPU could be overheating, too overclocked, or faulty.

[Testing the PSU]
Buy and use a digital multi-meter to monitor the voltages coming from the PSU. Follow the instructions for "Using a multi-meter to check voltages":
http://www.bfgpower.com/troubleshooting.html#DMM

Once you're done with the troubleshooting, see if you can test your parts in another PC. The mobo might be a possible cause.

Thanks for the tips.

So far I have done everything you suggested. The only thing I can do is let the tests run for a longer period of time.

Is there a way to know for sure if my MOBO is bad?

You actually tested the PSU with a DMM?
Is there a way to know for sure if my MOBO is bad?
Try a different CPU, RAM, video card, and PSU with that mobo. Or use that mobo in another system. That's the best way to rule out the mobo.

Also, the video card isn't fully ruled out yet: Try another video card if you can. After those tests, it's now time to start swapping parts.

Sorry didn't actually test the PSU yet, but highly unlikely that is bad. I will still look into that.

Unfortunately I do no have any other parts to test, nor do I know anyone with a system I could borrow parts out of. I guess I am SOL if it comes down to that

Believe me, it's never "highly" unlikely that the PSU is bad. Even good PSUs can become defective.

Yeah if you can't find or get other parts, time to start buying replacement parts to swap.

Have you tried formatting and starting a new installation of Windows? Considering its soft freezing it might very well be a software problem? I mean, you have no idea if its the hardware right? Reinstall Windows, if its still doing it then you can at least rule out all software problems, no?

I have to admit that given all the testing I have done on hardware, I am starting to think it is not a hardware problem. Given the fact that I can use my computer to do anything else but game and it does not freeze...

I just don't know what software problem comes out of the blue like that, or how to find out what is causing it. As previously started the full format does not work.

I will leave the computer on the next few nights and let long tests like Memtest86 run for 8-12 hours. But I have a feeling by the end of the week Ill be back here saying

"I did long tests on all hardware and everything passes testing, still having problem"

Time will tell I guess

I kinda get something like this on Vista 64 sometimes.

Lasts probably 10-15 seconds. Stuff gradually becomes unresponsive, like it starts at one window and spreads to the rest until I end up just sitting there waiting for something to happen then BAM everything catches up. Happens completely randomly as far as I can tell.

Doesn't happen when I'm gaming, just in explorer. Weird, but it happens rarely and doesn't really have any bad effect other than being kinda annoying for a few seconds. Like I can mash control-shift-esc all I want (or control-alt-delete) but it'll just sit there with the spinning WOOHOO THINKING icon until it decides to come back to life and do everything that had queued up in that span.

Never did figure out what the fuck it is, but it doesn't affect my gaming so whatever.

got an odd hunch from my vista days. Do you run any widgets or desktop gadgets by any chance. Might be a long shot but the Java or whatever plugin that some use could be causing a problem. I just remembered I had that problem in vista. So today I disabled mine in Win 7 on a far shot hunch that it might do something.

So far gaming for 3 hour straight with no freeze. Fingers crossed. Stranger things have happened...

I have similar MB (P7P55DPro) and memory (corsair xms3). I had random freezes mostly in game but also when not gaming until I used the BIOS overclocking tool. Since then, no problems. I picked the medium OC, and it changed the ram timing as well as bumping the 860 to 3.2ghz.
Before the OC, the MB would not use the ram at the rated speed, it did after the OC. YMMV

Sounds like a memory problem, you said you ran MemTest, did you do it for 24 hours?

Update the chip-set drivers?

Latest drivers installed

Could you list your system specs and exactly what you did, I may end up exploring this option

Sounds like a memory problem, you said you ran MemTest, did you do it for 24 hours?

I downloaded Memtest 4.10 yesterday. I let it run for 9 hours last night while I was sleeping on both chips. It made 12 passes and not a single error. Like I guess I can let it run for 24 hours...But something tells me if memtest can run for 9 hours without a problem I am probably fine. I doubt I could play my game for 9 hours without the freezing, so I am assuming not RAM.

I use my computer a lot, for work and pleasure. I do not have 24 hours to let it sit and run memtest. I will run it 9 hours per chip over the next two nights. If I don't get any errors I think we can reasonably agree it is probably not the RAM

I have this problem with my main gaming rig, it started about a month ago, I swapped out everything but the cpu and mb, reinstalled Vista64 on a new HD, reseated cpu and put new thermal goo on, still same problem, put clocks to stock, underclocked, overclocked, still same problem, memcheck ran 18hr without error, burnin ran fine on everything. Said fuck it and installed Ubuntu, guess what, system hangs and reboots randomly very often... I am basically down to MB or CPU and I would rather just buy a new i5 or i7 setup if I am going to replace them.

Sounds to me like a loose SATA cable causing the hard drive to need to re-initialize before the system can respond again. I've had this happen before, myself... hopefully that's all it is :).

It could be a software problem if it is you should check event viewer right after you recover from the "soft freeze".If you think it's a software problem make a list of all the software you installed, back up all the exe of you can,and uninstall all of them until you are down to what windows needs to run.See if the problem happens again, and install each software one by one.Check your cables in your case like golden tiger said it could be a loose cable.Remove all unessential peripheral devices like extra harddrives dvd/cd drives so on,try running one ram stick at a time.

Jeez that scares me a bit. Seems like a few people are having a similar problem...

Good advice. I am slowly doing this. Second hard drive is out, USB drive is out, printer off, External HDD off, stopped using firefox (the only other time it frooze other than gaming), and disabled my Microsoft Security Essentials (Read online it can cause a few odd problems)

Right now all that I have installed is:

- Windows 7
- World of Warcraft
- Civilization 4
- Google Talk
- Winamp
- Testing programs (such as GPU-Z, PC Wizard, Burn It In, Prime95, etc)

Call me optimistic, but I am hoping it might have something to do with my desktop gadgets. I know some of them use java, and perhaps flash. I had a big problem in Vista with them. I have closed the two that I was using, and since then I have not had a problem. It has been about 24 hours now. Fingers crossed for this long shot solution...

My config:
I7-860
ASUS P7P55D Pro
8GB total; 2x Corsair XMS3 4 GB PC3-12800 1600Mhz DDR3 Memory Kit CMX4GX3M2A1600C9
EVGA GTX-275
Antec P183 w/ CP-850
2x ST3500418AS Raid 0 (drive C)
1x ST3500418AS (Drive D)
LG GH22NS50 22X SATA CD/DVD

Before the OC the system always set the memory at 1333, after the OC it sets it to 1530. the CPU is now at 3.22Ghz.
The OC tuner setting is "Better Performance"

I hope that helps

Yea i was having problems with java with my windows 7 machine i would just crash for no reason.I didn't use java so i just uninstalled it.

Yeah I actually did not install Java either which may or may not be a problem.

Usually when I reach a point where I can't replicate these errors I usually reformat and start over. I mean not the quick format, I mean the format where you use diskpart to "clean all" and "format fs=ntfs" (RAW format).

Also I assume you have a USB key to load the latest drivers from intel site and such and not using outdated drivers from the CD/DVD.

If you do start over. Remember first update everything VIA windows update. Then install the chipset drivers, etc etc. Try to take baby steps to see if it's the browswer that is causing the issue. Toy around with IE first with all your applications/games loaded. If all is well then try the browser again to see if it doesn't replicate the issue.

I am at a loss for my problem, it doesn't happen often and it seems to have no set trigger, it could be my CPU or MB are damaged, not totally unlikely seeing as I have been pushing a Q6600 at 3.6ghz for 2.5 years on air.

I already did the total and complete full format. Also the updated drivers and windows updates were the first thing to go on

To be honest I just finished gaming for a second night in a row without a problem, the first time in weeks I could play that long without the problem. The longer this goes the more I am going to think the desktop gadgets were causing it. I will keep my eye on it, I am also going to look into gadget problems

Yeah you could have problems with the cpu or mobo given this info

UPDATE

I did not forget about this thread. I have been giving things time.

Since disabling the desktop gadgets in Windows 7 I have not had a game freeze on me once in the last week. Amazing! So the problem seems to be software related, and has something to do with the desktop gadgets up and running during the game. I am not sure if they use flash or java, in fact I do not know a lot about them at all, but they appear to be the source of the problem.

If anyone has more knowledge of these gadgets or why they may have been causing this problem please feel free to contribute. I would actually like to start using them again if there is a way to do it an not have my system freeze. Perhaps I need to install Java...

What gadgets are you using? I am using the Clock and Weather gadgets. Maybe I can replicate your freezing with the gadgets you are using.

I was only using two:

- Weathereye (Weather gadget for the weather network (Canada))
- Google Calendar Gadget. Displays your Google calendar events.

That's it

Also, today the same thing happened when I opened the game over top of Firefox. In the past I have also had a lot of problems with Firefox freezing and not responding...and it would take a long time to get the process to end. I used Chrome for a few weeks and it never happened once. However sometimes in Chrome I will get a Flash error on the page and it will tell me flash is not responding and ask if i want to stop it, which I do. I assume maybe it was a flash problem with Firefox and instead of asking me to stop it, firefox just locks up. May have also locked up the game

I assume you updated Flash to version 10.1?

Also when I was using Windows Vista, I had occasional soft lockups with Google Clock. After I reformatted and the problem went away I never bothered to install that gadget because I thought the standard clock in vista was good enough. Of all the things I tested I would have never imagined a basic clock gadget would be the culprit now that I think about it. I thought it was overheating or a program that I didn't properly uninstall or bad NIC drivers (because I never uninstalled them. I just installed over the old drivers).

What is funny is that I have used those two gadgets since day one of having this system and for months it was never a problem. Must have been one of the gadget updates.

I am pretty sure I installed the latest flash, but I will check for updates

UPDATE
-----------------------------

It has been a while, but I feel it is my duty to update this in case anyone ever has similar issues.

It WAS NOT the gadgets causing the problems after all. After I posted my last post I again starting having the same issues.

It was a bad HDD. The drive that I had windows installed on stopped spinning at random times, causing the soft freeze effect. Sometimes it could happen daily or it could go weeks without happening.

After extensive testing and frustration I finally pulled the HDD and replaced it. Problem has been fixed and I RMA'd the original HDD for a replacement.

Have been using the new HDD for over 3 weeks and now issue.

I really hope this all helps someone in the future. It is important to note that the HDD passed all testing. The problem never happened during a test and therefore all programs showed the HDD as healthy.

Cheers

Great, I'm having a similar intermittent issue in Windows 7... guess it's time to break down my RAID 0 array before whichever drive it is craps the bed on me entirely.
