Supreme Commander Thread!

/me just finished a 77 minute game of supcom.
Too many mods to list, but one of them caused (or maybe I was hitting my ram limit, dont know)

Get the mad borris mod, it *works*.
No more crashes for me. Can run huge 81 X 81 with 6-8 AI, no ram issues.

Id heard about that fix, was definently running on the edge. BUT, why would my mem usage drop after a save/reload sequence?
Anyway, I looked around to find that patch and will give it a try this afternoon. Still want to clean my supcom install. Most/many of these mods are "eh".

Hrrm Can someone post some pics of the cartography mode?
guess who hasn't updated SC and just heard about it
<.<

must go home and play
only 5 more hours at work :(

Blame windows memory management, or shoddy supcom coding, I dunno. But if the crash happens every 5 minutes once you you start bumping past 1.5GB used by SupCom, its almost certainly the issue.

It is worth it, trust me.

that video has the worst music i've heard in a long time

Never heard of anyone disliking Iron Maiden. However, I can see people not liking Nightwish.

On topic: I gave 2.3 a try last night. I'm very impressed, especially with the T3 arty. I was getting shot by at least eight cannons from three AIs. Then my game crashed..

whats teh link to this mad borris mod?

also, what are the other good/great mods?

I usually use the 2x resource mod too. Otherwise everything I try to build goes much slower. :(

I just picked this game up. Installed, patched, and played the first couple missions.

Wow, its fun so far. I'm really enjoying it.

At first, it was hard to get away from my old habits of starcraft and C&C. On the first mission....

I built 10 tanks and rolled up to their base. *Mistake*.

I built 10 tanks and 10 Long range missles, and 10 bots. *MISTAKE!*

I built 3 more unit production buildings, setup an army of 40 tanks, 40 bots, and 50 LRMs, and roll up to their base. *Success!*

Ok, now we're talking. This game is much larger scale than I'm used to, but fun! I only wish the units didn't move so *slow*. I guess it gets better once I start teching up.

The FPS is definately harsh, I'm not entirely sure I have the latest patch, so I'll try connecting to MP tonight and hopefully that'll auto-download for me.

Fun game so far though! I like it MUCH better than the demo.

Actually many units move slower when you tech up as they are bigger heheh.

Yeah, units move kinda slow, but when you have multiple bases and considering the scale of the maps its kinda realistic.

Unit diversity helps a lot, and always make sure to have lots of AA.

also, learn to love transports. Between ferry routes, [selecting transports, transportees, and a destination and watching them pick up the tanks and drop at destination] and things like light bots being able to fire in the air, transports kick ass.

Yea, I wasn't entirely sure how ferry worked, I'll have to play with that later. I saw it as an option on the 2nd campaign level.

Make a transport, have it go to where you want the starting location to be, then click on the ferry icon (maybe F key as well?), then click where you want things to be dropped off at.

Then, select people to go on the transport, and right click on the ICON on the GROUND (not the transport). They will auto load up on the transport. You can have other transports assist the first by selecting them and right-clicking on the ferry icon on the ground as well.

I dunno if its just me though, but sometimes the transports are stupid.. esp when trying to move a huge army across water... they just don't fill up that well, and sometimes they forget they are transporting people and just stop =p

assisting transports on a ferry route will all stop and hover if the original transport dies.

Hint, dont use ferry routes if the territory is unsecure.

Oh yeah I know that, I mean sometimes my guys will stop trying to load up after a while... not sure if orders time out after a certain time or something?

You can link your factory's to ferry points also, after the last patch they wait till the transport is full to deliver them to the drop point.

hey GL how good is that AI pack you listed? also, did you go with the FULL or just the one that adds the new ones?

my buddy and i have been having a TON of fun so far with skirmishes and 2v2's vs comps. we were pretty impressed with our win over a horde and tech AI 2 days ago haha. CZAR's > monkey lords and fatboys :p

also, have you had a chance to test that anti-memory leak addon someone above mentioned called mad borris? we both play with dual core comps and 8800's with 2gb of ram and 81x81 maps really can come down to a chug sometimes.

thanks

Only difference in the "full" version is that it makes the vanilla AI a bit harder as well. I see no point in playing any AI other than Sorian's though. Sorian's AI destroys vanilla, especially the C (Cheat) version. Be sure to check for updates as he updates the AI a lot.

Wondering if this is worth the $29.99 Circuit City has it on sale for tomorrow? I'm having a hard time getting a handle on what kind of RTS this is, exactly.

I'm more of a fan of the Dawn Of War / Battle for Middle Earth 2 / Company of Heroes way of playing RTS's, which is large scale battles are the focus with the micromanaging being pretty straight forward and not something you need to worry about.

I also like making one unit and getting a squad for large scale battles.

I've heard that this game favors the defensive style of playing, which I like as well.

Just don't want to burn $30, so any help would be great :D

Try the demo?

I can't play online because once Iog in it says GPGnet (or whatever its called) needs to udate, so I press okay then it just closes. Frigging annoying! Of course, I went to THQ and got some update/patch, but that didnt help, and all the official sites are just a hideous mess of crap that makes my eyes bleed. Please help.

SupCom = SyncBomb

Seriously, I've had about one good week where I could reliably play full games without somebody crashing or desyncing, and I've owned a copy since it came out.

As my battle logs in this thread can attest to, I just play skirmish. Especially with the user AIs, its quite stimulating and a lot less hassle. I did the same for TA for the last 10 years though, so maybe its just what Im used to. Also, Im IRL a huge loner, so that might contribute as well. I just find it nice to be able to play on my own terms.

I would get SupCom you should not be disappointed with it. However the scale of battles is big. Dont expect to make 10 tanks and think that is all you need... when playing a game expect to make +40 on a single unit with a single experiemental behind the escort units as an example. I would watch some of the good SupCom YouTube videos to get an idea how the game handles. In my opinion SupCom should be ranked in the top 5 RTS ever made. The online communtiy and modding community will only get better when time goes by.

you have to let it do its thing, mine closes too and the one patch took like an hour with no window or anything saying it was downloading, so just give it time.

OKay I'm trying that now, but neither my firewall nor task manager indicate that any program is running.

I get to play maybe once a month if that due to no time for the long drawn out battles.

I havnt had any problems getting it to update, though a few times I had to relog in to get it to continue, but I chalked it up to server traffic. I love the skirmish mode, that way I dont have to worry if I am facing someone who will wipe the board with my @$$ in five minutes. Having a chance to at least put up a pathetic fight is fun.

This game is awesome but don't even think about running it on Vista because it is totally nonfunctional with the current Nvidia drivers for 8800. This might not the case for all, but it is well known and it is a real problem. On vista I NEVER finish a game, the game either crashes to desktop 40 minutes into the game or it desyncs or something. Every game fails. I dual boot XP now and boot into XP when I want to play--works perfectly under XP.

I shit you not, you will pull your hair out if you try to play this game on Vista. It is the only game I own that gives me trouble.

It is also one of the best games I own and is worth the trouble. :)

Open gpgnet and go to the vault (the safe at the bottom) go to downloads, click on tools, run a blank search, download the full gpgnet client, uninstall and reinstall gpgnet.

I've heard that some firewalls and VIRUS scanners can interfere with it.

Temporarily disable real-time scanning.

Is it graphics card related or is it the memory/ram problem?

Anyone else have these kinds of problems? I was just about to pull the trigger on the game too, but I've got this same setup (8800 + Vista) and if it's going to crash every 40 minutes, that's not too good :(

yeah im trying to figure out why mine is crashing also. im using xp and a 7950gx2 and about 30-40minutes in when it starts gettin good it will crash to desktop. ive tried uninstalling my NGO drivers and putting all my hardware at stock and it still crashes

If i recall correctly its video ram related. Once you hit a certian point of ram usage it seems to crash, the time frame will vary depending on how many people are playing.

I am getting crashes too. all other games run pretty well.

Well, I have heard different things. I heard the crashing is video related, but it crashed both with my 2900XT and with my new 8800GTX in vista. In XP it works great. But it is a problem with the game. You can't really say that it is a "driver" problem when so many other new games work just fine under both operating systems and with those drivers.
