Street Fighter 4 Thread

Guile's one of those characters that gives me a tough time when I'm Honda. He's interesting because he can be played very well offensively and defensively. Like you mention, his ultra is pretty weak, though. If he had the uber sonic boom super from Alpha 3 he'd be a lot better off.
Still, it's the best he's been in a long time. He's definitely not one of those characters who is stuck with no safe moves. The ability to follow a sonic boom and mix up a focus attack or throw alone makes him pretty damned tough.

Guile, like Ken and Ryu is fairly well balanced. I think he's got more weaknesses than they do, but generally speaking Guile is a good character. In contrast to characters like Ken and Ryu though, timing is more important with Guile. Dan is this way too due to his slowness. Though he's got good power and takes a beating well enough.

I'm just working towards the rest of my trophies and trying to get plat, gonna give championship mode a small breather until I'm finished the rest, I already have all the online trophies so the offline ones should be easy.

Actually some of the challenges are fairly tough.

Finally made it to G2 after almost two weeks without internet. Had to switch to Sagat from Ken to get over the hump. I only played a few games at G2 but the opponents didnt seem to be a whole world better. I cant imagine how long itll take to get G1, but Im not going to really try for it.

I rarely see anyone except Ken, Ryu, Sagat and Akuma since I was at 1500GP or so.

Kind of hard to do, unless each player from each winning bracket contacts each other manually by sending a request

Or you can do what I do with my friends. Have everyone join a party and take turns manually. The winner invites the next player to fight...

Haha, I don't know about XBL, but on PSN, I saw the difference from G3 to G2. I'll be aiming for G1 after I get my plat trophy. I see this way as to improve my joystick skills and when I return with Viper, I'll have to blast through G2 (If I can, lawl).

But that 10 ranked matches trophy was pretty easy, skill-wise ranked is pretty horrible compared to Championship. I just attempted it today, was kinda easier than expected.

Ranked is pretty weak now. Granted it was better before Championship came out, but it never really was all that great. I got all of those trophies on the first day before people realized you can jump out of most of Zangief's throw tics.
I dabbled around with it again last week, and now it's just frustrating to try to get points. Once you get over 3000 or so points, you end up gaining 1-20 points for winning most matches (90% of players are at about 1000 points), but if you ever lose - you'll lose over 100. I can win 15 in a row to get 100 points and then turn around and lose all of those with one loss.

I'm back to just playing player matches again. You can typically guage how good someone is in 2-3 matches and if they're good, it can be fun to just play a series of bouts switching characters every time.
That's helped me get better with some of the characters I've been trying to learn like Abel. It's pretty tough to pick up a new character when you're just playing training mode or facing nothing but Sagats and Ryus playing not to lose.

Has anyone completed the Rufus trials? How deep do you need to jump in order for Galactic tornado to connect j. fierce, s. fierce ~ fierce Galatic tornado ~ jab Galatic tornado. I realize this is a buffered string, but I can only get j. fierce, s. fierce to register.

Ah - to get Rufus' galactic tornado to combo - you have to hold forward after doing the motion. Not sure why that is, but I confirmed that online back when I was trying that one, too.

I think I was too quick to judge the level of play. I played maybe 4 matches at G2 and only lost one. I beat a Dhalsim with around 6000GP way too easily, but you never know when someone is trying a new character. I'll play more tonight and try to close the gap to G1. HAHA.

It still seems like I learn an insane amount of new technique and strategy every time I sit down. Should finally get my joystick parts in the next week or so, hopefully that will help.

Yeah I'm having issues with the XBox 360 controller and this game as well. Even pulling off Ryu's fireball is considerably more difficult with these controllers.

I played Hyper Fighting using the 360 pads and I found that it's easier to ignore the d-pad and just stick to the analog stick. Treat it like you would a little joystick.
It's not as good as a good d-pad or joystick, but it's a hell of a lot better than that horrible default 360 d-pad. I eventually got pretty decent playing with it, but it took a little while.
Since SF4's a little slower than previous ones, that method might work pretty well, though.

I'm using the analog stick because the 360 d-pad is aweful. Still having some trouble with executing some moves as easily as I could on the Playstation 1 or Playstation 2 controllers.

When KOF12 launches their going to release 2 new sticks along side. Hopefully this and madcatz stepping up production the stick famine will end.

Me three. I almost returned SF4 because of the 360 DPAD. You don't notice it for the other 99% of games that don't rely on it, but when its SF time, it makes you want to cry. I use it exactly like domingo apparently does. I will say there are new moves(to me) that I can do now that was impossible with a dpad, good or not. Moves like Vega/s ultra/super combo's and zangief's piledrivers. I can also do Ultra's like ehond/bison's much easier than before.

Where did you order from? gamingnow, lizardlick, modchipman, cipher12, akihabarashop ?

If you can get your hands on one, I'd definitely recommend getting a joystick, makes the game that much better.

I ordered mine from LizardLick and still havent got them. I placed my order on March 10 and they are just today picking orders from that date. Probably wont ship until at least tomorrow so itll be at least a week before I can put it together. I wish I had ordered from somewhere else, but I was screwed from jump street. Everyone is/was backordered on all things joystick related. I only hold out because I know it will be worth it in the end.

I have got pretty good with just the anolog stick on the 360. I can pull off the charge supers and ultras(except Guile and Vega) with about 75% accuracy, which really isnt bad for that controller. Those characters will probably benefit the most from a joystick, since even 75% isnt really great when its nearly 100% with all the QC QC characters. Guile and Vega arent even close to 25% success rate with the analog stick, which sucks because otherwise they play very well. Thats not even a succesful hit, Im just talking about executing it. They are near impossible to play seriously with a regular controller.

Haha... I'm impressed. Someone managed to throttle his internet connection during the final match, I now see how he won all of his games.

I will never play J_Woods ever again, what a laggy bastard.

Oh well, you live and you learn.

Any chance of a wireless stick thats decent coming around? Having cables across my floor where i play my PS3 is not an option.

You can always mod your stick with an axis adapter if you want wireless.

Correct, this mod wasn't done by me, but from someone I regularly play SFHD with .You can see the axisadapter is connected to a bare DS3 on the right. The USB on top, is just for charging purposes

I've hired Street Fighter 4 for the 360. I kind of have a love-hate relationship with the controller; executing fireballs and hurricane kicks is a breeze, but pulling off the ultra moves is difficult, partly due to having to use the left stick (because - yes - the D-pad is that bad), and partly because while you're doing that with your left, you need to hit the relevant left shoulder button with your left hand as well. It's awkward to say the least.

yea, but when youre playing against someone in person and you pull off an ultra with one hand in the air, its impressive

my stick parts finally shipped yesterday. hopefully i can get it together this weekend.

The left bumper/trigger is always the trickiest one to get used to using with a pad. Especially when doing double motions needed for a super or ultra. I have no problem doing pretty much anything else, but the B,F,B,F+3K's ultras are always a pain for me to do on command. What really sucks is that I play Chun Li and Bison who both have those. I honestly think that 90% of my losses with either are because I can't nail those ultras every time. With Bison - any time you land a MP in the air your opponent should lose 1/3 to 1/2 of their life.

I've only been playing a few hours, but I'm finding the B,F,B,F+K/P ultras the easiest to pull off consistently with the 360 controller. It's the double-motion ones that are kicking my arse. If I have time and room I usually nail them but if I'm getting beat on or there's some kind of pressure I can't hit it to save myself (literally).

I should note I'm not playing online, just going through arcade...Seth cheats.

Sadly, if you go online and play some good people using Seth - they can essentially "cheat" too. They might not have the ESP that computer does, but there are giant Seth combos that the computer won't do to you. Luckily, hits do about 30% more damage to Seth.

It's Sagat...just tiger knee and alternate the uppercut or throw over any over and you'll win :)
Just kidding of course...although it's frightening how strong Sagat is. Is the Gen player crossing you up a lot? That's always been his biggest strength in the matches I've fought.
In general, Gen seems to have limited defensive options. He's great at cross-ups and doing big combos afterward, but his up-kick isn't that great as an anti-air, and lots of his moves do involve him going airborne.
I'd probably try being an extreme aggressor. Don't start off the match with the tiger knee or by jumping/walking backwards...everyone and their mom does that. I'd come at him by walking forward and using the fairly safe MK. From there, then you bust out the tiger knee mix-ups and work in the slow low tiger shot followed by the fast high one to beat jumps.
If you get a decent lead - I hate to advise it, but running away is probably the safest option. Don't throw any more tiger shots...just move back and do standing attacks. In particular, the standing fierce looks like a fireball and will encourage people to jump.
If he ever starts the cross-up patterns, use the EX uppercut. I've seen that bust out of some insanely deep cross-ups. Also...don't be afraid to jump. If you get hit with a cross-up while jumping, you'll be knocked down and can't be combo'd. Plus, Sagat's wake-up game actualyl gives him an advantage while down.
Don't be afraid to exchange hits. Sagat will win damage exchanges against every character except Zangief. Gen's relatively weak when only landing single hits.
If you find yourself in air hit vs. air hit battles - don't use roundhouse. Use the fierce punch...and follow with an immediate EX tiger shot after hitting him.

Ha ha, I'll be out of the country for the next week or so and when I get back, I'm sure you'll whip up on me. I'll send you a game invite when I'm home.

Ugh, I have never had a bigger problem than playing Shoto's in my life. Ken/Ryu my friends just tear me apart, one small combo and my life meter is down a lot.

I'm going to have to start practicing up spamming those feints inbetween combo's now.. training mode here I come.

ok ill try that thanks dude. let me know when u want some of me.

Hmm remind me to add you guys to my gamer tag. I love playing against and as Sagat. My new favorite character is Sakura. Her combos look so damn cute and her focus attack is really nice.

I've got problems pulling of some of the special moves I know real well with the XBox 360 controller such as Ken and Ryu's fireballs. As a result, I'm getting pwned more frequently than I should be online now. Analog stick or dpad, it just doesn't work that well. Its about time to invest in an arcade stick of some kind.

Ryu is an absolute bastard if the player knows how to use him well.
The ability to combo into his ultra from a focus cancel, exchanged hit, or flying MP is just crazy. Even just the old school mix-up of low hits into a throw or a dragon punch can be deadly. Any time a gragon punch lands, they can focus cancel it into something devastating.
Ken sucks because of the stupid priority of fierce uppercut spam, but at least he can't combo into his ultra and his EX hurricane isn't as damaging.
