Street Fighter 4 Thread

I just got my 360 back from RROD camp , and was fiending...beat one of my friends 21-12 or so, and beat up random interweb people to G3-A. The "stereotypes" are real, but I think my diversity of character selection helps a lot. I have gotten really good with Rufus and Sakura, which make Championship Mode grinding better, as I pick one of my characters (I play 6 or 7 seriously) and stick with them, match-ups be damned. Maybe you just need a break. I still wish we had a common system so I could challenge you....and SF4 needs lobbiy/quarter match BAD!

"Keep low jabbing" Balrog, the "Uppercut everything Ken," the "Jump back and air fireball" Akuma, the "Roundhouse kick FTW" Sagat, and the infamous "low jab/throw mix-up Ryu."

Hopefully the idea of adding T. Hawk and Dee Jay will come to fruition.

100% agree.

Finally decided to blast thru to G2 on Championship mode and wish I hadn't bothered. It is populated with one move wonders and perpetual turtlers. Most games are so f'in boring and really painful to play to the point it's killing the whole experience.

T.Hawk and Dee Jay would reignite it hopefully.

On a hilarious side note, I did hammer someone wih Guile and was promptly messaged 'Your not American, you can't play as Guile, that doesn't count. WANKER.' :D

LOL...I guess I'm only allowed to play as Ken and Guile (blech...I hate 'em both even though I'm passable with either).

I think I've just grown tired of the spammy nature of the game. Even watching the highest level tournaments...you see people abusing moves a lot more than previous games. Either that or banking on ultras to bail you out of a beating. In the case of Wong, he ends up taking a pounding in almost every match, but Rufus can link into his Ultra, and that gives him an instant 50% comeback on command. Sagat can combo almost every move he has, so pretty much any time he hits you - you're eating an EX move at best or an ultra at worst. Zangief's lariat in close has to be the most over-prioritized game of all time. Balrog's low jabs aren't far behind. A turbo controller makes him godlike.

Moreso than the other games, it seems like you can recognize what someone's doing (pattern-wise) but yet still be at the mercy of the sheer priority of certain moves. Thinking back to the old SF2 games, Alpha, and even 3 - that isn't the case as much. Especially with the Ultras having so many invincibility frames - aggression is definitely secondary to playing it safe.

I still like the game, but I think I've pretty much seen everything it has to offer and I'm just a little tired of what works, what doesn't, and things that should but don't.

A Champion edition with some more characters and toned down top tier characters would be much appreciated right now.

Haha, I think I'm just getting into it even more. Going to actual tournaments makes the experience a lot better. Playing online is nowhere near as fun. In G1, people are all scrubby, I see their tactics and just laugh, that stuff would never fly against me offline.

If all Balrog does is low jabs, he can be owned easily. Sagat with his DP FADC RH into his Ultra is pretty stupid. I find that Ryu's who love DP into ultra pretty easy, just ground yourself and they wont know wtf to do, or do safe neutral jumps towards them without getting hit by the DP.

What I do agree with you is the Ultra's. Seems like that was a huge mistake by Capcom, this was to help scrubs/newbs catch up if they were getting a beating. Hell, I rarely use my Ultra unless I feel like it for fun, but in tournaments, its almost a must now.

Rufus isn't that hard, his ultra doesn't do that much damage either, maybe a hair stronger than ryu's ultra, which isn't saying very much.

If I were to choose anyone other than Viper, I might have picked Abel/Rufus, both characters look to be pretty fun to use, plus I don't have to try as much to get some damage out, hahaha.

I'll still practice my Viper, I need to keep improving her.

I gotta say, being relatively new to SF (only played SF2 a few times) I loved the Ultras at first. But now that Ive played SF4 for a few months now, Im just now starting to really hate them. Id bet that 8/10 of my losses come from an Ultra after I pounded someone almost the whole round. But, the flipside to that is that I know I beat alot of people just because they get obsessed with trying to hit an Ultra and either whiff it or take a huge pounding trying to set it up.

I just started cutting back on it and only using Ultras when the situation presents itself, instead of fishing for it. That made a huge improvement in my play.

And this stick has made the charge guys actually playable. Now I main with Bison, I used to main with Sakura and Ken. I cant even play them with a square gate, not seriously anyway. Somehow, Zangief is easier for me now, even with the square gate. Octo gate soon!

Heh, I have both octo / square gate, and I much prefer square gate of octo. You can do much faster movements and for the fireball motion, you just have to do a quick swipe instead of the full motion like for an Octogate. I think Zangief is easy because you can do a quick circle for him as well, motions seem much more fluid with a square than octo, but it really is personal preference.

Btw, nice modded SE.

Any competitive game will eventually boil down to "best practices" for lack of a better word. I've played with Justin Wong in person, heis actually uber-aggressive, I watched him destroy a line of people with 5 or 6 different characters, no turtling involved. I think the Daigo match (Ryu is a terrible match for Rufus, I know this firsthand, Ryu need 3 moves to beat Rufus if done correctly, and Daigo is other-worldly good), and some top level tourney footage make it look that way, but the previous rounds were probably him molesting everyone. The Ultras do make it a bit necessary but I feel there is no great alternative design-wise. You can go SF2, no supers, too boring and technical for scrubs, game doesn't sell, nobody wins. You can go 3S, parries/universal defense options, game goes over most people's heads or is boring, same result. You could go SSF2T, super meter with no EX use, you just spam specials to build meter, if the move is worth it at all...I personally think the Ultras should be harder to earn, but I can't think of a way to make it any more fair...maybe since I've been playing in tournaments so long, I'm desensitized to people not "fighting" it out. There's always Mahvel...

IMO the fix for the ultra combos would've been to actually swap the supers and ultra combos. The supers are still fairly strong, have at least okay priority, and work well.
However they don't have a zillion invincibility frames thrown in for good measure and they aren't as damaging.
Giving someone an ultra instead of a super changes the scope of earning EX moves and actually rewards someone for earning a super. Right now, for more than 75% of the cast, the usage of an EX move greatly outweighs earning a super. If that super were an ultra - that could/would definitely change that.
Sure, they might want to tweak the ability to combo into either one...and probably even how quickly you can earn either one - but I think that would fix most of my gripes.
I just really don't like the idea of rewarding someone with an unbelievably overpowering move just because they got hit a lot.
It's easy to suggest baiting someone into doing one and making them miss - but in a lot of cases, a good player isn't going to just do one randomly. The real issue is when the player is using them as an almighty DEFENSIVE tool. In many match-ups this can actually force the player with the lead to completely turtle up knowing that if he uses any special move, the ultra will overpower it and cost him the entire match.

.

Exactly. I think I've said it before, I'll admit to letting someone get their hit's in to build my meter for a Ultra finish. The one that erks me the most is Goken you can be at 3/4ths health owning him than boom ultra at a bad time....

ATM though I'm in G2 D or C can't remember. Got bored of Shoto Fighter 4 looking forward to Blaze Blue in the next week or so. Just so tired of fighting Ken, Ryu, Ryu, Ryu, Sagat, Ryu, Sagat....Ken, Ken etc.... It's got to the point where I don't even vary my strategy anymore against them.

Gouken's ultra is most of the time very easy to counter, he'll be trying to go for a back throw which has a slower start up time, giving you a easier chance to tech..

has anyone tried using these controllers to play SF4?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Genuine-SEGA-Sa...|66:2|39:1|72:570|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

would they be a good idea for when SF4 comes out for the pc? as a 2nd controller?
how do they compare to the madcatz fightpad?

I ordered 2 myself. The Saturn controllers seem to be regarded as having the best d-pad of any controller out there, so it's probably your best bet. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on those Madcatz pads.

I've got some original Sega Saturn controllers. They do in fact have the best D-Pad out there.

What's up with the USB Saturn controllers? Are they modding original Sega Saturn controllers, or are these USB controllers that are faithful copies of the orignals?

I can't recall how it worked, but there was some sort of legit (ie. Sega sold it) Saturn emulator for the PC way back when that came with real controllers. That might be what you're seeing.

Oh ok.

I was going to say, I've got three Saturn controllers. I could convert one to USB if there was a diagram out there to do it and it would work properly.

Beat the highest GP player on G1, I think he just plays a lot, cause he`s 20k higher GP than the 2nd place guy, loool.

just doing my job to make sure this awesome thread stays on the first page

I need to either play a lot more or a lot less. I've plateaued at 2300 points, I lack the skill to get points in bunches and grinding it out really isnt for me.

Hmm, I really prefer G2 to G1. G1 is a huge joke, most people there aren't that good, they take advantage of lag tactics, but then again, online fights are all a joke, haha.

yeah..I actually sort of agree with you, but if thats true, then whats the point of leveling and such. I actually haven't played much online in the last 3 weeks, just a few offline games with the wife.

I pop on here and there for normal "player" matches just because you'll actually see people using more than just the "top tier" characters. I played a Cammy player last night who was scary good. He had the ranges on everything down to actually make some of her moves safe on block. He also had a freakishly strong focus cancel sequence that led to some insane juggles that didn't even require an ultra combo. You just don't see that much with ranked our tournament mode. It's not to say those players aren't there, but they're buried amongst 5000 identical Sagat, Ryu, Ken, and Akuma players.

If someone is down to play more then one player match and not leave when you get beat plase add me. PSN Ze Juden. Im not the best but I play differnet then most as Im a Alpha 3 and 3rd Strike player.

I'll add you and we can spar a few games. I never leave due to a loss, I like to experiment new things. I play more oldschool ST style.

Im also down to play, im on a lot. Im only an average player, i win more than i lose, but its pretty 55/45 split on that. But i enjoy losing to people who are clearly better than me and just thinking yeah i got pwnt and trying to learn from those matches, so i enjoy playing anyone. Im not a shit talker nor do i ever quit, but i might say GGs after 5-6 losses in a row, it does get old, lol.

shoot me a pm sometime.

psn: forsaken

I can't watch any movies at work so I can't check that one out. I know the UK community for Tekken is pretty strong, and they have arguably the best overall player for the series in Ryan Hart.
Is SF big over there?
Also, any wacky character choices being used? In most of the US/Japan tournament footage, I see the same top tier characters with an occasional Rufus thrown in for good measure. Anyone playing Cammy, Rose, Honda, or Abel?

In Japanese footage, you'll never see rose or any console chars (hardly) they usually play in arcades.

You probably already saw this but Justin Wong won Devastation recently with Abel. Different tournament, but the footage is on YouTube.

Nah, I've pretty much stayed away from SF4 for the last couple of weeks...plus I can't access videos at work. Interesting to know he won with Abel, though. Abel's got a lot of interesting strategies that work well against the top characters. Pretty much any time he has an ultra none of them can use a projectile. Plus, he's one of the few characters that can combo into his Ultra from an anti-air as well. That can really limit their options if the fight is close and especially if he has a lead.
I'll have to hunt for that when I get home as he's a character I'd like to be better with.

Hmmm. I watched some videos and it's really hard to tell what he's doing differently just because it seems like he's fighting nothing but Seth players. In those fights, you're pretty much dealing with VERY unique circumstances that don't reflect any other match. It's pretty much just him countering their run away tactics with jumping fierces, throws, and the occasional 1-2-3 combo sequence. Since Seth eats so much damage but is so overpowered, most fights pretty much just involve Wong eating a lot of hits, but winning by attrition. Not magic bullets in those fights, although because it's Seth, I'd probably like to see him against Ken or Sagat instead.

Incase you haven't seen the videos already, it was basically Ryu, Sagat and Blanka being used in the finals. Ken, Dhalsim and Vega all appeared in one final each.

I actually just watched 3 Wong videos on YouTube last night and haven't seen the UK tournament yet.
Interesting to know Vega was in there. I'm a fairly okay Vega player but have had a hard time using him in SF4. If you ever get down a little, making a comeback can be really hard. Wake-up moves really seem to hamper his roll patterns, and his special moves are all fairly unsafe. I have played a few Vega wizards that find a way to win, though. With a lead, Vega can be tough.

Anyone getting it for the pc? If so we should play sometime.

ill be picking it up for the PC as well, got my HRAP3 on a usb switcher to my HTPC. Ill be getting it through steam, steam id = pl1ght.

I've tossed around the idea of getting the PC version. Especially since the 360 pad can be used on the PC. It's not the greatest pad of all time, but I've gotten pretty used to using it with my old emulated copies of Super Turbo and the Alpha games.
My computer's hooked up to my TV, so it'll be more or less just like having another console.

If you are already stuck playing it on a TV, then I don't see the point of using the same display and same controller you use for the Xbox 360 version.

I don't have the 360 version - I have the PS3 one. Plus, it's more people to play. At one time I tossed around getting all 3 versions of the game just so I could play more people...but I'm a little bored of the game right now. I'm sure my interest will come back later in the summer since there really aren't any other games hitting at the moment.
