Street Fighter 4 Thread

I've got the game beaten with most of the characters. That won't be a huge issue but I have to get Akuma and Gouken unlocked first.

I stopped at Akuma

I noticed it's getting easier to move up the ranks. All the good players are probably G1 now :D.

I pretty much just spent the first weekend unlocking all of the characters.
Just set the game to one round and the easiest difficulty and it's pretty simple to do...but time consuming.
What's odd is that you can't unlock Gouken until you clear Akuma first, so whenever you're going to unlock them, don't overdo it.
If you want an easy way to get the perfects/finishes needed to get them, just use Dhalsim. The computer simply will not stop his standing fierce punch over and over. You can get as many perfects as you want right then. Otherwise, just hit them down to a sliver of life and let them beat up on you until you have the ultra.

All the god-like players are at G1. All the merely good players are still at G2. I played a few people at G2-A yesterday with GP in the 11k. Since they probably cut it off at 12k or maybe slightly higher, that really only leaves a few dozen people to be in G1 and above.

One of those players was ranked 56 on the Live leaderboards with Chun Li. I actually beat hm first round and was getting all excited. On the second round I had him down to 5% health and I had 40% health. Some crazy 10 hit combo later and I've lost. On the third round he just humiliated me.

The prospect of the number of CPs I was about to pick up was exciting, but the best player won that match.

I haven't messed with online play at all yet. Still working on character unlocks.

Online play is better than you might expect. It's not perfect, but it's definitely better than Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc.
I do think that HD Remix probably had the best overall netcode so far, though.

Stupid capcom, give us a quarter match mode. =\ I want to play with my group of friends. ugh.

The lobby and finding the game part is still annoying as hell, 8 to 9 out of 10 times it is Unable to Connect or someone joined before you.

Just switch your request options to championship mode and play arcade mode. Don't tell me you've been manually searching for matches :D

Yeah, but when I do Arcade mode, the connections are less than desirable. I've done it before, manually finding a better connection is faster than Arcade Mode, lol. Even then, it takes forever to find a good connection. Maybe there just aren't enough people out west to play with that has a decent connection, lol.

I find the manual process to be better for ranked and championship mode. I get all sorts of horrid connection attempts while I'm playing story mode. With player match, I couldn't care less and I'll play anyway...but not when matches actually count.
Generally, I find that if they list English as their language and they have at least one bar - try to connect. 7/10 times, when you do, all of a sudden they'll have 3-4 bars in the matchmaking screen. With the other languages, what you see is what you get more often than not.
If you want an easy win - look for Akuma icons :p

LOL, Akuma icons.. I love those.. hahaha

For those of you that create championship matches, when do you decide to kick?

A certain # of bars?

A certain % of disconnects?

A certain icon/title?

I usually disconnect someone at 1 or 2 bars. If they are 3 bars with 0% disconnect I will play them, but not otherwise.

I had a guy that I beat twice match up with me a third time. On that third match, he must have purposely throttled his connection to make my experience horrible because it was like playing on a slideshow. I considered marking him as a player I'd like to avoid (not sure if this is possible on psn)). But ended up not avoiding him so that I could beat him again if necessary.

I will kick or back out on 1 bar. For me, 2 is usually fine. I think the bars represent your P2P connection, not the person's actual internet speed.

Agreed, I like SC4 more than SF4 but the netcode is horrible for SC4. You need like perfect connection quality to have fun.
Domingo, for some reason I think I'm reading a post from Diago(SF4 International Champ), every time I see your name.

Yes. Fuck this championship mode, I just want to have what SC4 has, just with the SF4 netcode. I mean if Namco can do it, why not Capcom?

Odd I haven't experienced major issues with arcade mode and request mode set to championship . On a side note, I have my options set to stability and english only. 7 times out of 10 I'm matched with a user with full green bars. I go through maybe 3 online fights before I actually beat a character on arcade mode

1 bar is an auto boot for me. 2 bars is iffy. I've noticed slight input lag on 2 but depends on the mood I'm in. Disconnects I've only seen 1 at 10% and played him anyway he lost and didn'd DC.

As to anything else I'll play anyone if I lose bad I try to figure out where I messed up.

Oooo I got a question for you guys. Is it rude to play without a mic on? I haven't been a friend told me I need to start using it. Basically haven't felt the need to be conversational with SF4.

Absolutely not. My kids often watch me play so not only do I never have a mic, I always have the other players muted. Xbox live chat is horrible.

I joined a game where the guy had 29% Disconnects.

I proceeded to quit instantly.

I don't use a mic either and players are always muted when my kids are around. The filth people say when im kicking there butt.

On the PSN you're crazy for playing with the mic on. Bluetooth takes up so much bandwidth that it's for casual matches only. I'll bust mine out every now and then for friend matches, but if you're serious - it's stupid.
On the 360, I've never noticed a bandwidth issue, but in Hyper Fighting (the last SF I have on the 360) almost nobody played with the mic on.
Unlike Tekken, where there are tons of etiquette issues and whatnot - in SF it's pretty much anything goes as far as I know.

i just did a thread on that recently lol.....

about SF4, i've been playing it and yeah i like it but im more of a tekken fan so it's not amazing to me. it is quite technical though, there has been some counter moves i've seen where i've been like WTF just happened.

It's funny that gaystop always seem to be either selling games before the street date or get them before the other stores, they must have some kind of dodgy deal going on with the distributors, it wouldnt suprise me because everyone i know only goes there to get new games if they're offloading a bunch of junk ( no point taking decent games in there because of their shitty trade-in prices ) the only time its worth trading stuff in is when they do the 30% extra promotion then use your edge card on top to make it 40%, then its bearable.

I agree with you there.I will not buy from there high ass store anyway, and then on top of that. They want to disgrace you with what they will give you for a game. They have a good name.Gamestop, thats what we need to do to.Stop buying games from them.

Heh, almost G2-D now, starting to get a feel of newer strategies and playing differently, and now after I got my joystick, I'm finally able to do a bit more with it. Fierce Feint Fierce (FFF) Combo into a U MAD looks very nice during a match :D

I got to G2-E last night! Finally! I have the most problems with Balrog. I only play Guile because he's the only one I can play decently with the stick. Any tips? All I can really do is throw sonic booms from far away. If he's close, I have to just be patient and watch for a mistake(hopefully with that weird headbutt move), and punish him with a crouching strong followed with flash kick. Otherwise, I'm lost.

Hmm (from my point of view with Viper against a Boxer), you can NOT play a poking game with a balrog player, he will almost always have priority over anything you do. You pretty much have to wait it out and try to bait out a headbutt and punish.

If you are too close to a Boxer (Which is almost always the case), have you ever tried Guile's upside down kick? I'm not sure if that will have any priority over Boxer's c. jabs, but if it does that will definitely give you some space, which will also throw them off from charging a headbutt, where you can then presume to go on top of them. Boxer has a very weak wake up game, and if you can bring him down, you can start pressuring him because you wont give him enough time to charge either a punch or a headbutt.

Once he is down, try to keep doing cross ups on him, you can probably charge up some sonic booms while you are at it, and hit with crouch, light kick at the same time for speed. If that doesn't work, after you knock him down try to get some space, but be careful of his dashing punches.

You can also probably do air grabs if he ever tries to jump at you.

Also, Congrats on getting into G2! :D

Hmmmm. Guile might have problems with Balrog. The more I think about how I play him, I'm not sure how many answers Guile has for the normal dash punch. You can Sonic boom afterward, but he's going to be able to block it. The flash kick will beat it if you can time it, but if you miss - look out!
Like refraxion mentions, you might try the upside-down kick and see if that can stop the jab onslaught. It's tough to interrupt a rapid series of low jabs from him and he can mix up headbutts, dashes, a low "sweep punch," a throw, or even just wait and bait a counter move from you. If you can stop the jab sequences, that'll give you a lot more breathing room.
Make sure you're good with cross ups. The jab headbutt is pretty foolproof as a head-on anti-air.
Guile's pretty good at retreating and countering people who jump over sonic booms, but don't get cornered. If he pins you down, try to get a backward throw on him to get yourself out of that corner.
In fact, Guile's throws in general are pretty good. Often times Guile's a block damage/weardown character, and throws are the only way to make people open up.

Guile's upside down roundhouse only goes into effect if you are close to them. Like next to them close. So, I can't go that route.

Usually I sit in front of him, and he sits in front of me, and the distance is that I can't jab him, and he can't jab me. And it usually just becomes a waiting game at that distance. My crouching forward has little priority over his low jabs and other punches. And anything I do, he can do a headbutt and hit me.

It's not very often I can do a cross over on him safely. That headbutt is crazy. But that seems like the only route I can try. Cross up and just play mind games with him and throw him.

I'm ok when I'm far away. Throwing sonic booms and the occasional ex sonic boom, I can easily fight his ex rushes and what not.

Anyways, thanks for the tips.

Balrog's dash punch can also be followed up with low jabs that I have to block. I noticed that there is no cooldown time after the rush punch if they time it correctly. Cuz I always try to do a crouching strong after it to see if it will connect so I can follow up with a flash kick. I think I'm just gonna have to try to flash kick his rushes.

I haven't been playing for all that long but C. Viper sucks. She seems so weak and her stronger attacks seem slow to me. Even her special moves don't seem to be all that great. She also seems to take more damage than other characters do. Sakura takes a lot of damage but she's got a good combination of speed and power which I can work with.

If you guys are in a distance where you both cant do anything, you gotta start getting more distance to open up more options for yourself.

This is what I usually do, feint a jump, if you are crouching, let go of the crouch and stand, do that a few times, they might think you are jumping and they headbutt :)D) it works for me almost 70-80% of the time, and I get a free punish, which in turn lets me get on top of them, LOL.

If you want to go far away, try to fake him into a headbutt with that method (cheap, but sometimes effective), you can throw him across the screen and start pressuring him again with the booms.

@Dan_D: That is where you are wrong, C.Viper does not suck at all, she is arguably the hardest character to use to her full potential, with weak stamina, she comes with the right tools to fight her way out of every single battle, it's an upward battle, but she has strong combo's that can really turn the tide when needed.

Should definitely check out this video, just to see some of the stuff viper can do. (Joe does the FFF combo in there).

I'd actually say Viper's much better than Sakura. Sakura has "Cammy-itis" and every move she has can be punished if they block it. Meaning if they get a lead - there's almost nothing she can do except try to throw. Like Cammy, she's okay with a lead - but if they ever block any special move, you're going to get lit up.

Given how much effort it takes to dish out punishment with C. Viper I'll take Cammy or Sakura any day.

Sure, they're much eaisier to pick up, they're still not better. Once you start playing online, you'll see what I mean. I play a fairly weak character (Honda) and I can tell you that it's not fun.
Once that so-so Sagat player manages to hit you with a single fireball, you'll have absolutely no options to get across the screen and hit him back. With Viper, she can use her high jump to clear huge distances. Her ground hit projectile can hit him (while staying fairly safe) out of any further projectiles. Her flaming kick 2-in-1's to stop him if he advances, or it can be done from the high jump to make his anti-airs miss. Her electro-punch can go under his high fireballs, clear lots of distance, and will beat 99% of his standing attacks. She can also use fake versions of her moves to bait him, or even just tic away with block damage to even things up.

Sakura and Cammy have to hope he messes up. If he just sits there - they have limited options because every move they have is either unsafe or can be EX''d to give him an ultra faster.

I'd actually say the worst characters are Vega and Dan. At least Rose has a godlike ultra to save her.

NOTE: I'm not taking personal preference into account :) I hate playing with Viper, too...but she's still good.

Well I can see where you are coming from on Vega. I've never liked him and his attacks are often too complex and require certain things to be laid out a certain way to work. Plus misses leave him vulnerable.

With Sakura (not so much with Cammy, I don't use her alot) I can often dish out enough damage to get the job done. She is nimble enough to avoid many types of attacks too. Yeah, against certain characters she's not always ideal, (Sagat as you pointed out is one example) but I've always been able to avoid most attacks and get closer to Sagat, or whomever the same as I can with Ryu. They've got good balance. Their distance attacks are easy enough to pull off and they can fight in close.

Maybe I've just been using Ken and Ryu too long. I find working with them super easy and I can deal with most situations to the best of my ability. If someone beats me its just because they are better than me. Not because the character has shortcomings. With C.Viper I feel like I lose in many cases I wouldn't lose if I was using any one else.

The reason you think that way with Viper is because she plays very differently compared to the rest of the cast. All her moves are different and you have to do things by visual cues or by timing things right. It took me a while to get used to using her too, but she was the one I found to have the greatest challenge to use, and I wanted to play someone new. It was well worth it once I got the hang of it though.

I've played a lot more Balrogs as a % in G2 than I did in G3. I can say that once he knocks you down, he can be a scary character to face. With the option to do a rushing low knockdown or a rushing punch that can damage you when you're blocking low and combo into another shot, a good boxer can scare the hell of a non-seasoned player. I usually try not to panic because I have the option to teleport out of it. Sometimes it feels like I can't teleport out when it's timed right though.

After playing my buddy's Balrog about 5 times in a row, I found that an ex psycho crusher can take out any of his rushes and that really worked well in my favor.

He's gotten really good with his Blanka since he picked up his tournament stick 3 weeks ago and I can't beat him consistently anymore. In fact, I played him first the first time last night since he picked up the stick and he won about 15 rounds of Blanka versus my 12 or so of Bison. I found that I had to resort to trickery to get any sort of damage on him. Like jumping in when he's down and moving back slightly, which tricks him to shock so that I can slide him. Or doing a fake jump and instead of doing a devil's reverse, just land and throw. If I sit to long and let him be the aggresor and cross me up, I usually end up getting beat pretty bad. He'll do his crossup medium kick into a medium kick and medium sweep or into a medium kick and jump again for a repeated cross up or dash to my opposite side and throw. Very hard to play.

I told him to get into the Championship mode because I think he'd do well. I haven't played any Blanka's online that have frustrated me as much as he as (even though I've been beaten worse by other Blankas before).

Blanka's tough. One of these days I'm going to have to sit down and get more polished with him. If I had to pick someone, I'd say that Blanka is probably the easiest character to get really really good with. He doesn't have the overpowering moves that Sagat or Zangief do, but it seems like he can be played 3-4 completely different ways that can be adjusted on the fly. Plus, nothing he has requires the crazy timing that Viper, Akuma, Seth, etc. require. His best combos are all pretty short, and the key is just setting people up for them with mix-ups.

The other day I discovered (or someone "forced" me to discover by hitting me over and over) that he can nail Honda with his slide after a blocked headbutt or smash every single time. Now that match-up is just painful for me!
