Street Fighter 4 Thread

Since I rarely see Honda versus Blanka matchup, does normal headbutt trump a normal ball attack? What about EX versus EX? I always thought so from back in SF2.
 
Yeah, 1-on-1 the headbutt beats the ball...although the arch ball beats the headbutt in most situations. The EX headbutt and EX ball are interesting because sometimes the headbutt will win and sometimes they'll exchange. The EX arch ball beats the headbutt, though.
It's a weird match because Honda has no easy anti-air against Blanka so Honda's really on the defensive a lot in this fight. The roll is usually safe from a follow-up headbutt if blocked, but the opposite isn't true except with the EX or a jab headbutt from maximum distance.

When I'm playing that match, I tend to try and jump a lot, do lots of short smashes, and hopefully jab my way out of throw mix/ups. The roll can be beaten by Honda's jumping fierce, but Honda has no real defense against Blanka's cross-up. The smash misses because it goes forward, and Blanka can usually hit him with a low fierce after a missed smash.
 
Hit G2-D yesterday. Four hours of playing took me from 2600-3000GP. Although I won two tournaments and got runner-up twice, I lost more than half of my matches. I don't think I will be playing specifically to grind GP anymore. Realized that there are so many people out there better than me and that I can't be spending all my free time doing this. Maybe I'll mess around with some other characters for once. I have 360 plays with Bison on my 360 and about 320 on the PSN.
 
Yeah, I just stopped playing tournament mode. There's something frustrating about only getting one shot at someone and knowing that the odds of ever pulling them up again is slim and none. Trickery is the key in tournament mode since you only have 2 rounds, and there's very little room for adjustment.
It's not to say that there aren't some flat-out amazing players on there, but it's a little annoying when they have a pattern or sequence that you can't really break out of easily, but once you do figure it out - they've got very little else.
 
I'm still sticking with championship mode, just that it helps me learn how to adapt quickly to a match, or try to adapt atleast. Figuring out what they like to do and learning new ways to counter is pretty fun. But sometimes it gets frustrating when some scrub tactic actually works against you, lol.

Hell yeah i know best 3 out of 5 i could beat many players i go up against in G2. Usually if i get lucky and run into them a 2nd time i can win. Not knowing your opponant out the gate adds another level of difficulty. I think I'm done for the moment climbing the ladder. gonna hang out in G2 for awhile.

Heh, G2 takes a bit of work, i think you need 20000 GP to get out of it.

I know I'll be there forever, but I like the competition.

LOL Looks like I'm gonna be posted for awhile anyway. Atleast it's not as easy as G1 was.
 
Yeah, I don't think I'll ever leave G2...nor will I really try. I'm really disappointed in that whole match recording feature.
Since everyone was still low, the first weekend might be the only chance most of us ever get to record matches.
I'd love to see some other implimentation of that feature, because it is pretty cool. Make it like Halo.

Hmm, I dunno. In G2 its easy to get your replays uploaded, since you get ~40K CP to do so.

And to note: I finally decided to do Vipers hard trials today, finished them all in one go! Now I will use Deadly Beauty as my title, don't care for counter pickers, haha.

Well, I recorded a 52k cp match a week ago that was ranked 1100 at the time. Too bad it wasn't a championship match :/

Well I tried to play online and the game tells me that I can't with my existing profile. Friend of mine says you need an XBox Live Gold Membership to play this game online. Any truth to this?

If you're on the 360, chances are you will need a gold membership to play pretty much most online games I think? Could be wrong though.

I've don't play many games on the 360. I've certainly never played anything online with it before either.

Yeah I think gold account is pretty much what you need to play online for the 360 (Have to pay), and I don't like paying just to play online when the other system has it for free. =p
 
You need a Gold membership to play online with the 360. Every now and then it's free for 'silver' members for a specific weekend, but it's pretty rare.

That sucks.

In any case I just unlocked Gouken last night. Slow, but powerful. I honestly expected his moves to resemble Ken and Ryu's moves more closely rather than having only a passing resemblence to them.
 
I got a match recorded this morning, but it wasn't exactly a good one. It went down to the wire, but it was ugly and neither of us looked worth a crap. Sadly enough, it also replaced my miracle win with Honda on Balrog.
I still haven't figured out how the recording works. I've had tournament wins that were like 30K that did and some that were more that didn't. This one was like 50 (it was a G2-B opponent), though.

G2 is pretty much littered with Ryu's trying to get the flying MP or dragon punch exchange into the ultra. Ken's almost non-existant now...or really pretty much 3/4 of the cast. I'm just seeing lots of Ryu, Sagat, and Akuma.

In any case I just unlocked Gouken last night. Slow, but powerful. I honestly expected his moves to resemble Ken and Ryu's moves more closely rather than having only a passing resemblence to them.

Gouken is interesting. I can see him potentially being awesome if you can master those counters. The main thing I see with Gouken players are LOTS of throws. Because Gouken can combo after his throw and because his counters are essentially a crazy anti-air - like 90% of Gouken fights end up being a throw fest. Zangief eats him alive.
 
I play primarily with Gouken and I most the Zangiefs I face do that spin move over and over and over. Goukens counter stops that pretty quick. Actually I don't throw much with Gouken, (only typically do after a failed shoryuken, etc).

Gouken is actually really awesome, I've played with people who know how to use him and trust me, he is really scary. His auto-counter is pretty rigged if you know how to use it and really good with timing. My friend schooled me with his Gouken, lol.

Because he has no real anti-air other than the counter - piledriver/combo sequences are hard for him to stop.
 
I just ordered this used on Amazon and got lucky with a fightpad at 48 bucks winning bid on ebay. Spent about 65 dollars on the two so I feel lucky I guess.

I have been playing a LOT of SF2 HD on Live and just got fed up with the goddamn 360 controller and figured I'd finally hit up SF IV since I'm getting the fightpad. I figure I'm going to get rocked in fights however from what I have been hearing I'm going to play nothing but C Viper and get good with her if it is the last thing I do.
 
Have fun with c. Viper. She is my main too, don't give up and she will be worth it. Definitely feels good pullin off combos and winning. Also, you'll know you've reached higher level play with her when you can pull off her hard trial 5 in match ups.

You're right. It isn't just zangief either. Anytime someone jumps in, I do the counter with Gouken... If they jump then throw, I always lose.
 
Just finished unlocking all the characters. So now I've been playing as Seth for a bit. Not terribly quick despite the way he seems when you face him at the end of Arcade mode. I know he can be faster, but generally speaking he doesn't feel fast.

Good luck. I had the same exact feeling when I got the game. I am good with basically every one else but her with a few exceptions. I know she's good, I just can't get her timing down to be effective against anyone good.

Well IMHO, I think its the insane nagher crazy reaction time the cpu uses to pull off his moves. Seth's combos and tactics are ruthless if executed perfectly every time and with superhuman reaction time. You can only get that with AI in a fighting game.

I honestly think I am one of the worst street fighter players in the world. Albeit I just play it casualy compare to many and I use a 360 pad but I only play championship mode and my record is 117 wins with 136 losses LOL. Most of my wins come from Blanka and most of my losses are a variety of the new characters. I dunno maybe I'm too old for good ol reflex as I'm 38 lol

One thing that annoys me though how many times I will be fightin a string of like 13 Ryu's in a row or 15 Ken's in a row and the occasional 5 Sagats in a row. Half the time I just get a drink and lose in purpose cause I get so bored of playing against the same character.

Seth is easily the best character in the game as far as his combination of moves go. The thing with him is that he's like Akuma and takes a TON of damage every time he gets hit. Even weak ultras like Honda and Abel take 1/2 his life. Strong ones like Akuma's and Zangief's take nearly 75%.
The stuff the computer does with Seth is really somewhat dirty (mainly the teleporting stuff) but people can theoretically do almost the same things. It seems like the CPU recovers from the teleport a little quicker, but otherwise - people can do everything else.
If you pick Seth up - the best advice I can offer you is to be good at playing defense. You can be absolutely tearing someone up and blow the whole thing in one combo or bad sequence.
Having run into a couple of Seth wizards along the way, the stuff they're doing, and the stuff you pretty much have to do to be successful is very technical. I'd probably stay away from him until you're pretty good with the other characters. He's probably closest to Dhalsim crossed with Ryu, but that's still not really giving him a fair shake.
 
Dhalsim sucks in this game. He's so slow now he doesn't seem particularly useful. His moves are too easy to counter given the lack of speed.
 
some top players would like to have a word with you..but i agree that the average joe gamer will more likely lose with sim than any other character. He requires patience and pretty good timing for his combos..but most importantly he is not button mash friendly lol.

Well its more accurate to say that he is too slow for my play style. I tend to be fast and aggressive.
 
If you like playing Dhalsim, you can probably beat the pants off so-so players using only the fierce punch button and teleporting a lot. Jump fierce, standing fierce...fireball - repeat in random order until they get fairly close and then air teleport away.

Played during my lunch break, received alot of nasty PM's using guile. Too bad his ultra pales in comparsion to the rest of the characters.
