Starcraft II

Oh man Stephano was beastly at IPL3. Congrats to him!
Despite the hiccups in the stream throughout the weekend, strange camera transitions and sound problems, IPL did amazingly well for their first live event.

IPL did not disappoint in terms of games and player performance, which cannot be said about the IPL crew. Everything from the sound board to the camera control was just piss poor, IMO.

With that said, very surprising victory. He's a fun player to watch, and I wish him good luck in the future.

The camera quality and lighting was pretty good though. The booth was spacious so the players could be seen from several angles. There were even moments where the sound of their keyboards clacking were put on stream, which was kind of neat. But yea, there were some pretty terrible camera transitions, such as showing the player in full screen while the deciding battle was going on (they owned up and admitted the mistake though) and showing players faces up close for practically a full minute, which is a little longer than I'm comfortable with. Then there's that stand-up "comedian" that received the full rage of reddit's starcraft subforum.

That said, the production was still much better than NASL's first live finals.

Gotta say, I loved to 60fps HD feed. When the game was being shown it was so smooth and had so much detail. It was like watching a replay on my computer with someone commentating over my shoulder.

IPL seems to have gotten better each season. I'm really looking forward to season 4 now.

all the terrans seem to lose to roach ling all ins. yesterday was a sad day for korea progamers and terrans.

I'd had the stream running for about five whole seconds before I started squinting my eyes and focusing on how much better the framerate was than any other SC2 stream out there.

I made sure they knew it too. I sent emails, I said it on twitter with IPL hashtagged, I commented on the IPL's facebook page, and I mentioned it on forums. I'd be much happier if all the bigger tournaments upped the framerate on their streams like that.

Nice, I didn't know they had a 60 fps stream. Now we need the video streaming industry to get on the ball with YUV 4:4:4 so we'll never have to look at ugly chroma subsampling again. It's not a big deal with real-life footage but it affects crisp, animated video above all else. It would literally look like being in the game, given enough bitrate of course.

Agreed. And they need new casters. I can't stand HD.

HD's an okay-ish caster, but his casts about high level games reveal almost nothing about gameplay or strategy (strangely, his casts about low level players is more revealing, lol).

Maybe Blizzard should stop nerfing Terran EVERY SINGLE PATCH.

meh terrans and zergs are fine right now. only protoss needs a slight buff.

cella needs to coach his players better. all 3 slayers getting wiped by lucky was sad to watch especially when lucky roach all ins. hope mma does better in gsl tmr he looks so tired at ipl.

side note MVP is the king of everything.

HD:
-uses words that he doesn't know the definition of
-uses idioms that don't mean what he thinks they do
-analogies make no sense and don't add to the commentary
-can't stand his "eh" chuckle after every unfunny "joke" he tells

^^ lol. Then now you know why I cannot stand basically any other caster than Psy, and occasionally (because he does have some decent casts that actually teach or tell), HD.

commentators are just there to fill the silence. even the most knowledgeable tastosis makes stupid comments and jokes now and then. actually lot of stupid jokes as of late lol

HD is a try-hard. Annoying as hell.

HD is a terrible caster.

People may want to string me up for this, but I find Day[9]'s style of casting incredibly annoying as well. He get's all quiet and serious about stuff, and his mannerisms and casting style don't instill the same sense of excitement about the game as his brother for instance. I still love his daily show, which I think fits his style perfectly.

It'd be nice down the line if SC2 casters could get some coaching from the more established sports' (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.) casting crews.

I agree that HD is a terrible caster but if you pay attention to most professional sports casting teams, they're awful as well. For every Brent Mussberger, there's a Matt Millen or some other idiot that can only spew out the obvious.

And Joe Buck, remarkably, has even less personality than Doa.

You make a valid point. Something else I thought of after posting this: part of sports is sports-hate (see Bill Simon's column for an explanation) and part of sports-hate is disliking people who don't really do anything wrong. Maybe having some casters people hate will be good for drumming up some sports-hate and thus discussion, kind of like Idra.

my favorite casters are day9 and HuskyStarcraft

day9 because he knows wtf is going on, and husky because he is just damn entertaining

I find Psy to be the best of the bunch. I used to watch day9 a lot, but I haven't seen his show in a few months now. As great as he is, he was just getting on my nerves. That being said, I like it when he teams up with dj-I only have one set of clothes-Wheat.

Same with Crota. I used to watch some of his shows, but he's really technical about the game, and makes a ton of mistakes every single cast, and doesn't come out to be all that knowledgeable, IMO. Husky... loud and annoying, but can be entertaining. Plus, he gives out nVidia stuff, so what's not to like.

As for HD... he's alright. He's got a good voice for casting, but at the end of the day I think I'd rather listen to PainUser.

I used to be a bigger fan of HD, but like others have said, it seems that he really is forcing the puns these days.... IMHO, he'd be fine if he just spoke a bit more plainly and focused on the game more

True. If you've ever listened to sports radio, the call lines are usually empty when things are going well. The most active times are after a loss.

He'd be fine if he stopped making unfunny jokes and then laughing and chuckling at them.
He'd be fine if he stopped trying to use words and terms that don't mean what he thinks.
He's like the 3 year old that's mimicking what he hears grown ups saying because he thinks its cute.

English isn't his native language and he's not naturally funny so everything seems forced.

Nah, toss is fine as is. the ability to warp units in anywhere near a pylon is op IMO.
what do you feel are toss' weaknesses?

They have a few big weaknesses, but for the most part can compensate for them. There are however two problems I'd like to see addressed.

1. No mobile detection without robo; thus Toss are forced into robo builds against Terran making them highly predictable. This could be fixed by moving obs building to Nexus on any T2 building completion (then you could go templar, robo, or stargate and still get detection).

2. T3 air is unviable (not talking about moship). Carriers are an absolute joke in this game for more than just their build time. Their attack mechanic is completely broken as well. They have to be range 8 to acquire new targets even though their interceptors can attack up to range 14. If already launched interceptors within range 14 of the carrier could acquire new targets they'd be incredibly useful again as they'd be able to kite, which is what made them so amazing in BW.

protoss units dont scale well with upgrades compared to zerg and terran. and its a much less flexible race than terran and zerg.

Day9, Artosis and Tasteless are the best casters. Because they've been doing it since Starcraft 1 and are actually knowledgeable due to years of experience. HD and Husky helped bring ALOT of people to the scene, but that's about it. They aren't very good casters and add alot of pointless fluff during game casts.

HD is just bad. His knowledge is poor, I mean its decent enough, but compared other decent casters he's on the low end of knowledge, and he's not entertaining, he tries to be but its just awkward. He's got nothing going for him. I often feel bad for him because he does try at being a good caster, but he's not.

Husky is just entertaining. His knowledge is also on the lower end, but he's entertaining and thats enough. Day9 is good too... I like Day9 daily. Casting games I prefer Day9+Husky dual casts rather than Day9 alone... actually I don't think I've watch many games of him solo casting. I dunno if I could handle it, lol.

Over time I've become a PsyStarcraft fan. He's by far best. His knowledge, at least in Zerg matchups, is top notch, and he's also entertaining. I would really recommend anyone checking his stuff out.

I think order I watch stuff is:
Psy's videos
Husky videos
Day9 daily
HD and other crap I've subscribed to but don't like much... often I have a backlog of Day9 dailies so I rarely need to resort to watching this stuff.

You feel bad for him? Lol, he's making a decent amount of money casting via Youtube alone. He's got 300k+ subscribers. The last thing you should do is feel bad for him. :p

HD and Husky contributed a lot to the sc2 scene with their vods early in the beta but now when you step back and watch them cast, they are not the brightest of the casters out there.

1. very few terran go banshee, and if they do, it's for mineral line harass. by then you should have a forge/canons, and a robo later for mobile detection
if so, terran is almost at the same disadvantage, but worse since they have to tack on a useless tech lab on the starport. the scan is ok, but if you scatter your DT's, you can waste scans.

2. BC's are even more useless. they're expensive, slow to build and just as easily countered. yamato charge time is like 3 minutes. at least carriers have good DPS.
zerg by far has the best air units.

agreed.
husky is not the most knowledgeable caster and he actually sucks at the game itself, but at least he's funny and entertaining.

i actually didn't mind HD + husky co-casting.
what was the drama between them again that lead to the breakup?

they just live far away, lol. Only few times they casted together, both were in SF (HD's home area). Only did a few "over the net" co-casts, and they had their issues (technical), in the end, they just... stopped, lol. I don't think there was any drama, not any the YT population would of known about at least. Maybe TL or others might, but I don't.
