Starcraft 2 Beta

Just got a key from a co worker who is friends with one of the lead programmers. He's hosting a LAN at his house, 4v4 ... our work team vs Blizzard team members.

Thanks for the note about making a CPU AI game. I was under the impression that customs were locked out unless I wanted to be dumped into the regular ladder and skip my "warm up" matches. Thanks.

No problem!

Blasphemy! If only I lived in the U.S. and by Blizzard... :(

I thought the max was 2v2. I haven't been able to get any 4v4 games going (unless you guys are playing a different version than what's in the beta, haha).

Wait, I thought Blizzard says there is no LAN option in SC2?

Or, that's being included now?

Because the idea of not signing into Battle.net to play with friends who are like 5 miles away, and just bringing my computer there and hooking up to their networks to do some LAN fights against the computers (or against each other) is how I prefer to play Starcraft.

It seems a bit tedious to have to be registered on Battle.net, sign-on, and make a private room. With SC1, it's just plug in the computers to the network, load the game, start up a multiplayer skirmish. Simple. I like simple.

So, on my break I pulled up the HD Starcraft guy's page and watched one of his videos (I didn't have any sound on). Methinks the video is sped up because it was moving so fast I couldn't figure out what was going on. Mayhaps sound would help...if it wasn't sped up and he's really just that fast...I am forever screwed.

Learn to use keyboard commands and know that you can hotkey structure, set mineral waypoints for workers, etc etc. So if you're playing Protoss and have a Nexus you'd right click a mineral field patch so that workers automatically start mining when they spawn, and then you'd hotkey the Nexus to a number (I like 1 because its right next to the main keyboard shortcuts).

So instead of clicking the boxes in the lower right, etc, you'd press 1e to select Nexus and queue a worker, who will then go to the patch when it appears. Same for armies. You can hotkey multiple production buildings to a single building, so for building armies you'd link all your Gateways to 2. So let's say you have 4 Gates and want to produce four zealots, you'd hit 2zzzz and it would queue them up and send them to your waypoint.

Macro has been very simplified in SC2. I spent the first hour just learning hotkeys and figuring out how I'm going to set up my macros. I'm not that great at RTS games but there's a lot one can do to speed up production, and it mostly leans on the keyboard. Once you get into the habit then it becomes second nature, but again its all practice and drills.

There are lots of build order guides and such online, check them out.

Hah, good luck.

I played with my Blizz buddies last night. I'm not that good and I'm super rusty, but I guess they're way worse than me. We ended the night with two of them versus one of me and I rolled them.

It really depends on who he's playing with. Just because you make the game doesn't necessarily mean you're awesome at it (unless you're David Kim). :)

That's weird considering Blizz said there's no LAN play...

The bots are absolutely useless as of now. They only have one setting included in this build of the beta: absolute braindead.

You'd think that it'd be a good way to experiment with new units, but it's not. The bot is so terribad that it simply won't build enough units or buildings for you to kill.

I think Blizzard is holding back their real AI for later builds, maybe even retail release. I'm hoping that means it'll be really good.

Blizzard is holding back on AI until balance is finished. Any rebalancing that is done will require a rewrite of the AI, so its a bit pointless at this stage in the game. There is also the fact that Blizzard wants people playing against each other, not the CPU.

The version I played at Blizzcon last year had four or five difficulty settings, and they worked, if that makes you feel any better. :)

Makes sense, though since I'm not terribly interested in the versus aspects of the game, I'll only make limited use out of it. Makes me wish someone else had gotten the key instead of me, but hey if they need more input they'll simply distribute more keys.

A game or two of versus a day is about as much as I care to muster with this type of game.

I'll gladly borrow the game off of you while you aren't playing it. Maybe while you're sleeping.. :D:D:p

Whoring out my battle.net account isn't what I had in mind. :) I wonder how fast blizz would catch on? Hey, at least I am providing a bit of a community service and broadcasting it on X-fire when I play.

The AI is not a challenge at all right now, even when stacked 3 to 1 (3 AI, one player). This is because currently the only setting for AI opponents is "Very Easy".
Watching replays vs AI they play massively inefficient. They'll attack with only 1-5 units and stock up thousands of resources doing nothing with them. They're basically passive or like duds in the original (but actually make a unit once in awhile).

Do you have a link for your X-fire stream?

That's intended, the only purpose for the AI currently is to allow you to get used to the games basic mechanics in a controlled fashion.

Damn, I only found about this 2 days ago. :( And I thought I was on top of any SC news...

That is one function, but there are two larger reasons for that. One is that that Blizzard wants to have people playing each other during the bet. It is a test for Battle.net matchmaking (which works GREAT btw) and multiplayer balance, and setting up local skirmishes with the CPU doesn't help either.

The other reason is that multiplayer balance is still being tweaked. Any AI tweaking that needs to be done is a direct result of how the units balance, so that will be done once everything is solidified.

That's news to me, off the record. People literally get fired for giving special privileges for beta access. Just saying :)

Also, didn't they remove LAN support for AT or VS?

Not at all. I and many other people got keys from being friends with Blizzard employees. The friends & family invites went out yesterday. Not as good as getting in the first wave that went out last Wednesday but I'll take it. ;)

Let's be friends! :D

not really. Blizzard gives out beta keys to employees so they can give them out to whoever they feel like.

had a guildmate in WoW who worked security IT for Blizzard that did exactly that during WotLK beta

If I don't become a close friend with someone who works at blizzard over the next year, just shoot me when the Diablo III beta launches! Ha!

What I found funny as hell was that they gave an invite to one of my ancient accounts that hasn't been used in forever, whereas my main account (older and far more used) which was in active use up until I lost my job hasn't gotten one yet.

Goes to show, there's no obvious rhyme or reason to the invites.

that's how you can tell if it's live or replay footage, the replays can be sped up however you want. watch husky's vids, didn't check hd's yet but majority of the ones I saw there are live.

great links tho, too bad I can't play. really getting a feel for this game through those vids, besides the carrier spam of course, lol@husky's game 2

Cool. I'm watching now. I hope I can get into the beta next wave, I only had burning cruse attached to my bnet account but I just found my old D2 cd key and threw that on, couldnt find the expansion key oh well.

I'd say end of year earliest.

Earlier this month they said they were aiming for a mid-year release, but I am saying Q1 of 2011 lol. I got a bet going with my friend that the game will not be released this year. Beta is going to go into Q3 of this year, then they are releasing Cataclysm Q4 which will push back SC2 to Q1 of 2011.
