Starcraft 2 Beta

There are also some godawful players in the replays sheeshhh wow thats bad
I've watched a little less than half of them. The file names with more underscores tend to have good players. So far I've only deleted 2, but still have many more to watch. Also the beta invites were not given to the top players of the world and the website allows anyone to post them up. Why people think anyone cares to see their noob matches I don't know. They do have a 'most popular' page if you'd rather have it filtered for you to just be entertained by pros instead of studying the game. I remember one I deleted was the "never give up" where the terran makes a come back against a zerg player. The only reason why the terran guy won because the zerg player basically stopped playing with any sense of proficiency once his rush failed.

Here is a large replay pack from the currently best ranked Euro beta player. I havn't watched any yet, but I heard it's a pretty good pack. [Clicky Click Link]
Thanks. I'm interested in seeing more TvZ matches, especially if they're good.

Where's a good place to download the actual game client to watch the replays?

Fileshack for the Client (Create an Account)

Teamliquid if you want to see some of the best guys go at it. Almost all the guys that stream here are in the top 10 of the their platinum divisions.

There is a whole thread dedicated to the posting of replays.

You can also go to their website without downloading the client and look at their Videos On Demand.

THIS SUCKS!!! I signed up for this last year and no beta key! Fark you Blizzard!

Only a year ago... LOL.

This game has been talked about for years, I got a email from them way over a year ago to sign up.

oh and I don't have beta access.

oh and it has nothing to do with when you signed up... as far as I can tell

Only game I have on the account is StarCraft 1 Brood War

It kills me, I want beta access so bad, Blizzard ;)

I never signed up for anything, asked a few days ago to be in the beta and got an invite the following day. Pays to have friends who are friends with Sr programmers for the project. :D

Psshhh, how about a [H]ardforum friend of a friend of the friends of the SR programmers.

Read: send me an invite! :p

You sure you can watch replays without a beta key? Says you need to be logged into battlenet to do that, and when I log in it says I dont have beta access so its back to the login screen.

Set the file association of the replays with the SC2 beta executable. It'll load you right into the replay. :D

:/

I want to get into this beta so badly, have tons of hours logged on SC1. Anyone know when they're sending out the next wave?

Well, it was what, 5 days between the first and second? It'll probably be that long at least, although I'd assume it'll be a good bit longer.

That depends on if that was an actual 2nd wave... people are suggesting it was the rest of the Blizzon codes + press + friends/family + a few opt-ins, so it wasn't that many people

Didn't they give out like 15,000 beta keys or something and there are only 3-4K players on bnet, horrible...keys sitting in peoples emails not even being used

Yeah I think a Blizzard rep confirmed that the wave 1.5 was meant to shore up numbers... I can't believe people are already not playing it (i know it's global)

Blizz might want to reconsider the opt-in + blizzcon ticket madness..

a lot of that 15K are probably WoW players

multiplayer RTSes tend to have a high learning curve

high learning curve + playing against people that came from SC1 and/or WC3 = getting noob stomped and not having fun

if they end up purchasing SC2, they'll probably just play the SC2 version of DotA, the single player, and/or custom maps.

BTW, listen to the Blizzard podcast that went out today, they go over lots of stuff.

http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/community/blizzcast/archive/episode13.html

The best bit of information is that they are still looking at releasing the game during the first half of this year, and they are looking at this to be a three month beta instead of the three-to-six month beta that they were initially anticipating.

The game is in very good shape right now, the whole package currently feels more polished than most shipped games. Its mainly balance tweaks at this point. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I think that a summer release is entirely possible.

Even if you don't have a key, know that its getting close!!! :D

Anyone know, where or any advice in regards to system compatability?

My computer personally is fine, but my cousin who will be wanting to play with me does not have a computer at the moment. I wanted to build him a computer, with a 700-800 dollar limit. Only problem is I know I can build one that will run it, but I want a measurement of how well it would run. So anyone with feedback on their current system, or a site that is talking specifically related?

Also, what the heckssssss been in Opt-In for like 2years, and still havent gotten a key what a rip off.

Starcraft 2 Update: STILL AWESOME!!!

:D

Yep...I'm still playing it too. I have to admit though, I'm never going to hang with the likes of -orb- or any of those guys. It's insane how fast he can get a base up and units out.

You don't need a super computer to run it. FPS stays just fine with a C2D E7300, EVGA 9800GT overclocked, and 6GB RAM. If you zoom the camera in close with your mouse wheel, frames drop dramatically but who plays RTS games zoomed in on one unit anyway?

I can handle an economy pretty well, and I'd say that most of my victories have been due to superior macro (its definitely not because of good micro :)).

The big thing with those very high level players is is how while they are fighting and harassing, they can also be so fluid with their tech strategies, continue to expand, and counter accordingly to whatever unit combo or strategy is coming their way, all while keeping their heads cool. All of that late game stuff, when both sides are bleeding on the ropes but they still keep pushing back at each other, that's what impresses me the most.

It kind of blows my mind seeing games played at that level of competition. :)

That said, I had the best game last night. It was PvP and the other guy was pretty darn good. By coincidence, we both wiped out each other's mains at the same time, him with Void Rays and myself with a Stalker/Zealot/Sentry mix. Its not even halfway through the game and all either of us have are first expansions, so I'm rushing to drop Nexus where I can to keep my economy going while trying to hunt his army down, and he's doing the same thing! So its like musical chairs on the mineral fields where we manage to eke out a little before destroying each other's expansions, while at the same time I'm trying to get my army to his void rays (stalker + guardian shield = dead void ray). He's also sending out new void rays from some proxy pylon base he put lord-knows-where.

I finally find it and its over, GG, I actually jumped out of my chair I couldn't believe I'd made it. I was so pumped up from the adrenaline of the game, but the downside is it was 3:30am. Yeah, 3am for "one last game" was a bad idea, haha

That last post reminds me, matchmaking over Battlenet has been excellent so far. Its done a great job finding players at a comparable skill level to myself (before joining the ladder you have to play ten qualifier rounds that analyze your skill level). Games have talked about skill-based matchmaking for years but SC2 seems to have done the best job of it, at least based on my limited experience playing it.

Getting a game organized in the original Starcraft was such a headache. Here, no big deal, hit a button and you're fighting a well matched opponent in seconds, nice.

A 700$-800$ tower will easily run SC2 well. Something like a high end Core 2 Duo or i7 750 paired with a Radeon 4890 ($200-ish) will play the game or most things you can throw at it great.

I haven't read anything on slowdowns in-game, and there are a lot of options to turn the visuals down, but I reckon that even a system like the one I quoted would run it great with the settings cranked up.

I get 40 FPS(dips to like 30 when I zoom in) with everything on Ultra/1920x1080 during a 48 minute replay (lots of buildings and whatnot) everything on High is 40-60fps

2.2ghz quad, 4gb, GTX260

Watching a few replays, I've noticed some animations just aren't up to usual Blizzard standards. Especially Reapers, they just sort of move their arm a little bit and a green blob shoots out.

Hopefully it's a beta thing.

Starcraft 2 Update: STILL AWESOME!!!

:D

Last night I was watching SC2 replays in-game for the first time and trying to explain to my fiancee my giddiness for the game. How I played the first one years ago, one of the best games ever, etc. Told her she better get used to seeing a lot of it :D

No, it's not.

US players with US accounts cannot play EU players with EU accounts, etc.

You can log onto the eu.battle.net website with your US account credentials, but your battle.net account is flagged with a "home" region based on where you created your account from (eg. www.battle.net or eu.battle.net, etc) and you will only be able to play with those in your home region. You won't even be able to add and see EU account players on your friends list while on a US account (but you can add them and play with them if they are in Europe and have a US account).

I know this for a fact as it's been a problem for my EU friend and me. She is, however, a GM so she just used one of her F&F keys to get a US account as well.

Note that all keys, whether from Opt-In, Blizzcon, US F&F, or EU F&F are all universal. The region you will be restricted to is entirely based on your battle.net account's home region, eg. one of my other friends used a key from our EU GM friend on his US account and he now has a US SC2 beta account, while I used a key from the same person on a newly created EU account to play on the EU side (I could not register another SC2 beta after my opt-in under EU, even if I logged into eu.battle.net, on my main battle.net account because of the whole "home region" thing and the website kept giving me the "You already have a copy of this game registered" error).

Whether you're seeing only the US population numbers or the global population numbers when you log onto battle.net is something I don't know, but I would imagine it's only the US numbers.

Edit: I'm under the impression that this is not what it will be like for the retail release. This region restriction most likely is just due to beta conditions, whether it being easier to do frequent tweaking with completely separated regions or simply because of logistics they have yet to work out, I don't know. But there's no reason to believe that the retail SC2 and battle.net will not follow in the footsteps of previous b.net releases and be global with a region-chooser right on the menu that can be changed at whim.

Wow, you just described me perfectly (in WC3 at least) :(

I do want to get better though (and I do not play WoW or any MMO).

HDStarcraft just posted an awesome TvP game in three parts, all you guys need to watch this (and in 1080p!):

Excellent game, so incredibly close up until the very end.

And its more proof as to why Reapers are such nasty units. :) People complain about Roaches all the time but all of my losses so far have been at the hands of Terran Reapers, haha.

Watched that yesterday, it really was a great/crazy game.
