Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

I don't care if the game is done or not. What they've managed to do (in spite of all the experts saying it couldn't be done) is amazing and will move gaming ahead by a huge leap.

There's always going to be a loud vocal minority complaining about anything and everything. The key is to do your work and deliver which CIG has been consistently doing. They spent a good amount of time building their team composed of studios from around the world. Next they built the tools with which they could create the game and we are now seeing the product of the machine at work.

If you thought that small demo of the Persistent Universe was cool, just wait for CitizenCon in October. The Squadron42 stuff they're gonna show is going to be even better.

It always annoys me whenever they have an article on a website or some big new demo/video reveal there's so many people talking about it "not being out yet" and just being a "pipe dream."

The game has been in full production for like 3 years now. GTA/Elder scrolls/Witcher 3, all of these types of large open world games have taken around 5'ish years or more to develop and get out. The sheer scope and magnitude of SC and everything is larger then those yet people think they should somehow have magically finished it in a shorter time span then those games.

It feels like people just like bandwagon hating on it for no reason, which makes no sense to me. It's like they want it to crash and burn, and why? It looks amazing, they constantly post updates and it's been making good progress.

Making good progress doesn't mean people won't feel ripped off when compared with the expectations and timelines initially set. When you go out to dinner, would you be fine if the food took three hours to cook because the chef decided to try extra hard?

Throughout the game's development the backers have been polled about a great many aspects of the game and the direction it should take. The overwhelming majority responded with a simple mandate "take your time, do it right". As the scope of the game grew (which WE the backers voted for in those polls and with our wallets by the way) we also understood it would take more time to get it done.

I don't know if anyone else was waiting for the Carrack to go on sale but you can get a CCU for it now. $10 upgrade from the Gemini in case anyone wanted to lock in that option from you buybacks or what not.

Been collecting all the armors available.

uggggg, I swear these screen shots make me want to upgrade my system now lol... 6700K looked nice but wanted a 6 core, I'm trying my hardest to wait for the Skylake-X and grabbing a couple 1080's (or what ever great at the time) MUST WAITT :(

I'm still playing on an i7 980 and dual 290xs lol, performance is entirely limited by the netcode right now. I've loaded onto a fresh PTU server and started at 60fps(locked vsync) but it eventually drops down to the low 20s once more people log on and start doing missions. In comparison if I load ArcCorp I'm locked at 60fps all the time.

Star Citizen is playable at 1080p as is and actually runs decently, but it just other games that I'm dealing with and I really want to go to 4k bad.

I've been rolling with an old i5 2500k at 4.5ghz, and I'm getting bottle necks with it on my 280x crossfire in a few games so I don't think jumping to a GTX 1080 is going to matter and reports from some other places tend to back up that theory. I actually stopped play the Witcher 3 until I upgrade, I would be running at 60 fps and then something happens and I'm down to 20 fps, it's just being a pain in the ass to be honest lol.

Gamescom 2016 Star Citizen 3.0 live gameplay demo. Grab a drink the mission is almost a full hour worth of gameplay.

that Gamescom footage was unreal...got me interested again in the game...looks gorgeous and they nailed the overall feeling of space, landing on planets, interacting with interesting things etc...this is what No Man's Sky should have been

I spent $40 bucks on this so far, not going to spend any more till they actually release a somewhat finished product. Should be good to stretch the legs out on my 1080 GTX, whenever I get it installed LOL

When they release a finished product... how would you sped more? These pledge ship packages aren't going to be here forever.

From what I saw Squadron 42 or whatever they are calling is another $40-60 bucks and I really don't have that much interest in the MMO part of the game at this point...I could careless about pledge ships because they'll still be around (in some sort of fashion) after the official launch date or if it goes into beta. It's just a bragging right that means next to nothing to me.

what will be the size of Star Citizen universe?

Do you mean number of star systems? the target has been around 100, with about 60 being discovered, and they can continue to expand it as they see fit with making additional jump points lead to more.

Not sure how long it will take them to make that many systems tho.

Naah. It's going to be 15€ upgrade if you have StarCitizen (and vice versa: Package Split Information - Roberts Space Industries). When I pledge game package included both games.

Well, the size of each system will be significant. They are going to make traveling actually take time - one thing I love about the game which enables such gameplay dynamics as long distance cargo hauling and travel enabling users to be everything from a passenger (with different travel classes) to actually "run" their own transport business (read up on the document about the Genesis Starliner, for an overview of one way it could go and this is on the "small" side, acting more like an airliner today. There will also be superliner "space cruise ships", and similar elements on the cargo side such as the MISC Hull E, which is somewhat parallel to a massive container seaborne shipping vessel today. Which of course allows further emergent gameplay like player and NPC piracy of these vessels).

Even other elements like communication - the distance that broadcasts will transmit, relays etc.. are meant to make the universe massive. Each system will have a wide variety of planets and space objects (stations etc), which will employ hand-crafted locales as well as procedural generated ones. Don't forget that there are entire "science" and "exploration" game elements, the latter of which allows players to actually expand the map themselves, finding new jump points and even new systems, as well as mapping out and exploring unknown worlds, so the universe is designed to grow in this regard, too!

Getting hung up on the number of systems is probably unwise - after all, games like No Man's Sky and Spore did just that and both the hype and design were worse for it. Star Citizen is focusing on the features and the quality, with a set goal of a certain experience in mind, rather than saying "we have 82 kajillion systems" for them to only have minor, inconsequential differences between most of them and limited gameplay prospects once you're there.

How will grouping work for traders who want a fighter escort? Will there be teams (corporations or whatnot) and what incentive will there be for the escorts a trader would hire? My concern is that a lot of the cool stuff I'd like to do will be maybe fun but not rewarding. Basically I think to really enjoy this game the way I want, I'll need to group up with like minded players who don't mind a little roleplay.

I'm a backer but I'm not following development that much, I could get carried away with my expectations. I'm keeping my expectations simply at "Modern Wing Commander / Privateer / Freelancer".

Traders who wish an escort will have many ways of acquiring one. For instance, if they're part of the same Organization or know each other in game directly, all the various avenues of messaging are open (subject to any distance laws of communication. Digital coms within systems are relatively fast, but between them there may be delays, couriers required etc... or beacons/relays have to be active. Of course, Orgs may have their own in and out of game special channels. However, there will also be "bounty boards and mission listings" that the trader can advertise upon. These can take many forms from local system boards to various factions (ie miner / trader guilds, NPC factions to which players can belong) that may offer wider ranging, cheaper, or other benefits. The traders can put up an ads for a contract with the data they wish and fighter groups, mercs, or others wishing to provide the escort can answer the ad. If things work out a contract is struck as a game mechanic, which will compensate the escort as they both negotiate - anything from flat credits, to a bonus for being done quickly, to a percentage of the total value if the cargo is going to be sold at its destination, or even bartering other goods. Since the contract will be a game mechanic, if anyone should go back on the deal, there will be varying consequences depending on the situation . It is important to know there will be a lot of incentive to use these systems as, if I recall, the game economy and system will be intertwined between player and NPCs on all levels as well as logical economic progressions (ie If there's a shortage of ore, then it could affect every business down to smelting, manufacturing components, to the actual sale price of ships and weapons. Which in turn will encourage more missions to deal with the ore shortage, both for say... combat pilots to keep the pirates from monopolizing the shipping lanes, for traders to cart the ore back, and miners to mine it directly,. all compensated at higher prices thanks to the shortage), so there will be plenty of reasons for players to be looking at those boards, both setting and completing missions for other players, as well as NPCs.

I think that as the scope of the game has grown, CIG has made it a priority to make the non-traditional (ie exclusively combat based) roles both fun and important in the game world. If you read over the aforementioned piece that came along with the Genesis Starliner sale, you'll see where they describe that people can even make an in-game living as an airline owner all the way down to a flight attendant! Likewise, those who want to do stellar cartography, map jump points, run mining operations large and small, repair other ships, the entire medical profession, various forms of trading, bounty hunting, just plain working as crew / on duty stations on multi-player ships, and a whole host of illicit professions both black and gray market (ie Have an Endeavor science ship? You can make pharmaceuticals to sell on the open market...while also having a small amount of recreational drug manufacturing under the radar , if you're crafty, taken by secure courier to fence in unregulated space. Get caught though, you may have to deal with the UEE Advocacy (ie Think the "Space FBI" ) lose rep with legit businesses and contracts...but you can always go out to "gray" space or to pirate havens and ply your trade there exclusively!) . I too enjoy roleplaying in MMOs and look forward to it in Star CItizen, with there being plenty of organizations who favor that approach as well, so you'll be in good company. What are you thinking you'd like to do ?

I think you're doing the right thing and with those expectations you're likely to have a fantastic experience in both Squadron 42 and Star Citizen (the Public Universe). Getting excited is okay, but just remember that things like those I describe above are a ways off, being added in small blocks that so far seem to be building towards something great. Likewise, implementations can always change and so far I've seen it for the better, but I think so long as they stick to their principles they are really working towards something worthwhile, but having realistic expectations - especially with regards to time and an understanding of the development process will make it a better experience for you.

I'd like to be a part of an Org who is mostly commodity / mining / trading focused. I have a simple Aurora package to start, but I'm hoping I could find a nice organization that needs crew members on a multi crew ship.

I'm watching the Gamescom Live Alpha Demo right now and it is blowing me away. I'm seeing them about to take off at the 29 minute mark, the co-pilot gets back onto the ship and takes the rear turret. I've wanted to see this in a game since I was flying a Broadsword in Wing Commander 2.

And now I'm at the 33 minute mark and the co-pilot just did a space jump from their ship onto a disabled wreck of a ship, this is incredible.

As good a time as any to repost our Org that is mostly comprised of members from here in the forums. Focus is most likely pirating, but there will be people interested in all aspects as well from mining, trading, and commodity logistics.

Dokazon Corp. [DOKAZON] - Organizations - Roberts Space Industries

And there is a thread in the community section which shows our ship assets, which is long over due for an update which i will do if people want to repost any changes they have made to their fleet ect. or new people want to add to the list.

I have never been in this post because 0 interest in this game. I just watched that new footage that came out and I cant believe this game. looks simply amazing

Thanks. so no chance of having thousands of star systems. I was hoping for the size to be not exactly infinite, but at least in the thousands.
There will still be many. I like this hand crafted approach better than gazillion rng systems that lack any character.

Yeah, even with only 100 it would likely take a long time to get to see them all not knowing what dangers lay in wait to crush you, and then there will likely always be new ones added all the time so as they need more content for explorers or lore elements so I think the way they are doing it is for the best.

Remember that entire galaxy map is only 30% charted, the remaining 70% is for players to discover.

Starting to get excited for this again. I've been trying to ignore it for a while, so that I'd be pseudo-surprised when I tried it again. I think it's approaching that time. I think I'll pick up one more ship as well to complement my 315. I think my main thing is exploration (hence that choice) but I'd like something a bit different in case I need to do something else at some point as well. Might as well pick it up before I have to earn it in game. :D

I followed on and off in this thread for the last year or more after the game started and I followed actively. Tuned out to let things move ahead. Got back into it about 2 or 3 weeks ago and have been having a blast flying around the current port system seeing what is there and running missions. They have a ton of room to add things to this area beyond the communications stuff and the ICS probe. Just hope they make better filters for all the jump points, if you are far out its hard to pick a target lol.

There may be a way but I have just jumped in and enjoyed what is there, other than the mass of controls. Took hours to get things figured out again so I can do most things without thinking about it again hah.

I'm a casual player now with the same 3 ships I had when I bought in right after the Kickstarter. I figured I would be interested in light cargo runs (Freelancer) Exploration and the joy of flying (Jumpworks 315) and I dont remember why I bought the Aurora LN. Tempted to flip it for a Mustang for combat or something. Maybe I got it to fit in with the others who have it lol.

Anyway even with the bugs and such the Alpha stuff is a ton of fun. I have not spent a lot of time at the city thing or Arena Commander this time around, having a lot of fun flying around running the base missions. Although I do hope they find ways to change them up or randomize what you get at each area from a pool of things or allow groups to generate some of their own.

Nice! That kind of confirms that it's time for me to start playing with this again.

The navigation points are smaller on PTU 2.5, so are a bit easier to select when far away and they get packed in close. I'm hoping once we get the starmap they showed in the 3.0 demo we'll have real filters.

Eventually they will have procedural mission generation and player created missions.

The Aurora LN is a solid small hauler but I can see wanting to CCU it to something else with the other two ships you have. May be handy as a backup or shuttle between your other two ships if they end up parked in different places. Mustangs are fun to fly but are made of paper compared to the Auroras. :)

How is performance now? Last time I tried it (a few months ago?) it was abysmal, practically unplayable.
