Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

It always annoys me whenever they have an article on a website or some big new demo/video reveal there's so many people talking about it "not being out yet" and just being a "pipe dream."

The game has been in full production for like 3 years now. GTA/Elder scrolls/Witcher 3, all of these types of large open world games have taken around 5'ish years or more to develop and get out. The sheer scope and magnitude of SC and everything is larger then those yet people think they should somehow have magically finished it in a shorter time span then those games.

It feels like people just like bandwagon hating on it for no reason, which makes no sense to me. It's like they want it to crash and burn, and why? It looks amazing, they constantly post updates and it's been making good progress.

Those games didn't ask (and continue to ask) for millions up front in order to develop the game. They self funded and realized their revenue by releasing the game.

I haven't found a single "hater" that doesn't want this game to succeed. It looks amazing and lord knows we need a good space sim again. What I do find is people calling out "backers" who also rail against preorders, publishers, and the like for charging for their work. All the while falling for the next gimmick that Chris Roberts is asking for more money and time to do.

CIG is bleeding money and is already $100 million+ into production. They have little to show for it and have grossly missed every timeline they promised under the guise of feature creep.

preorders are generally different since most of that money never actually helps development or is even charged until the product ships, by preordering and paying up front at gamestop you only help gamestop. Those games will come out regardless if you preorder or not. So in most cases unless you need to be playing day one, you are better off waiting to see how it turns out.

When you pledge to SC you are actively helping current and future development.

2.5 Live
Star Citizen Alpha 2.5 Available! - Roberts Space Industries

We have published a major update to Star Citizen. Star Citizen Alpha 2.5 includes significant changes to Star Citizen’s Crusader persistent universe environment. This patch, now available in your Star Citizen launcher, introduces the detailed Grim HEX pirate base, which is a major addition to the game world and an important part of our evolving faction system. Three ships have been added to flight-ready status, the Reliant KORE and two variants of the ARGO MPUV short-range transport.

Patch notes
Star Citizen Alpha 2.5.0 - Roberts Space Industries

Remember if you were in the PTU and had downloaded the latest version you can significantly reduce your download by renaming the folder "test" to "public" and verify game files from the launcher.

How is performance now? Last time I tried it (a few months ago?) it was abysmal, practically unplayable.

I just installed it again for the first time in 9-12 months or so. Silky smooth on High. (disclaimer, there's a bit of motion blur, so I can't give a precise account yet) Not bad at all though. I just clicked High and started, so I'm not sure if there are any new advanced options. This is at 1080 on a 4690K, 16GB, GTX 1070, all at stock/factory OC settings. (so nothing terribly fancy) You seem to have a similar system, but one step up on the CPU and Video card from the same gen. You should be fine. Looks good, but I'm out of time for the night. I'll mess around with it more over the weekend.

All I'll say is I'm glad they didn't go with that nearly flat saucer design for the actual ship lol

Yeah i am glad its Anvil not Aegis as well, Aegis has far to many ships compared to other manufacturers atm it feels like.

Microtech concept art, this will be one of the new planets we will be able to visit in 3.0

I heard about this during the Gamescom event livestream but to hear it confirmed and explained in detail by CR is pretty exciting.
The addition of the procedural planet tech essentially added a very large amount of playable real state to the game. To make use of it they are going to allow us (both single players and organizations) to build their own bases in planets/moons which will be able to be kept hidden using shields, etc.

There will definitely be a case where you and your organization would find a place that you like on one of the planets and bring in some habitat and build your own little base, and put a shield so you can't really be seen by other people and give out location for others to join you. Then some other org could go around scanning and find your base and you have a battle...

I think you're making good points, but it's pretty much a waste in this thread. Most of the regular posters in here have already invested insane sums into this game/virtual ship store and aren't likely to budge on their opinions. Personally I've watched from afar for years now and continue to be amazed at the money that gets laid out on "continued development" while what's been released to date is woeful in a lot of ways.

Ya such a woefully inadequate game that during Gamescom the line of people waiting to try the game was so long that wait times were 3 hours EVERY DAY of the show. The line was so long that it actually wrapped around and blocked access to the booths of other games ;)

$121M :D

Flew around Port Olisar, flew out to some abandoned shipping station, floated around in EVA a bit, shot my gun at the wall a bit, jumped back to a comm array, got blown up by pirates.

10/10 would fly again.

Performance was alright, not amazing but way better than I remember it being before. Shaping up to be a great game!

BadnewsBaron goes to Kareah, gets his parked ship destroyed, fights some bandits in FPS, steals some liquor, survives being shot by a Hornet while in EVA, steals a derelict Vanduul Glaive and uses it to hunt the Hornet through several jumps, Hornet eventually flees to Port Olisar like a coward but he finally is killed by the Glaive ramming it with the wing blades.

Don't miss the Avenger Warlock firing his EMP blast weapon that takes out everyone's shields.

hey all. my partner just signed up... using his gmail account but never got the activation email. does anyone else use gmail with this game?

Thanks!

mh, that's not that uncommon for high-profile titles at gamescom. i once waited in line with the GF for 2.5 hours so she could try out black flag.

Oh also forgot about the cargo system which will enable cargo missions, trading, and all the emergent gameplay derived from it such as:

- Pirating to intercept cargo ships and steal the items being transported
- Cargo mission runners hiring escorts to protect them and fend off possible pirate incursions (double crossing people will likely be a thing too)
- Bounties placed on pirates
- Bounty hunters hunting those pirates, etc. etc.

So, looks like I might be getting back into this.... at some point.... I have a debt to pay locally on the forums first, than I will be getting around to actually getting an Alpha sc+sq42 kit.

Galactic Tour’s Fan Favourite Flyer - Roberts Space Industries
Attention Citizens! The battle of the speedsters is on: we’ve unlocked the M50 and the 350R for use by all backers through Friday, September 9. Take them out for a test flight and then cast your vote right here for which deserves the title of Galactic Tour’s Fan Favorite Racer. The winning ship will also return to the pledge store the following week, so choose wisely. See you on the racetrack!

Welcome back!, if you melted any packages you can buy them back (robertsspaceindustries.com/account/buy-back-pledges) which is likely to be cheaper than buying a new package since the prices have increased.

M50 won the poll so it's now available on the store and for CCU.

The theme this week is combat ships, the Vanguard Warden and Super Hornet have been unlocked for all backers to test. Try them out for an entire week ending next Friday the 16th and vote for your favorite.

Galactic Tour’s Combat Ship of the Year - Roberts Space Industries

GALACTIC TOUR’S COMBAT SHIP OF THE YEAR
Welcome back. First off, as expected, the M50 easily won the title of “Racer of the Year.” No big surprise really to anybody who had watched my stunningly insightful review of the new M50.

If you are upset that you missed your chance to vote, I can only assume you flew a 350R and arrived too late to do so. Fortunately for you, there’s another vote happening right now!

Last week, we took a hard look at two of the fastest ships out there, but this week our Fan Favourite Flyer features the two ships that are most likely giving them a reason to run. That’s right, time for you to tell us which is the “Combat Ship of the Year.”

Vanguard_warden_gurmukh.png

Aegis Vanguard Warden
Like something out of the pages of ancient mythology, the Vanguard Warden is best described as a winged beast. Often seen leading the charge, don’t be too shocked if the Warden has single-handedly finished the fight before the rest of the squad shows up. This long-range fighter can cover more ground and mess more stuff up in a single day than the Imperial Senate. An impressive feat for sure.

F7c-M_super-Hornet_flight_visual.jpg

Anvil Super Hornet F7C-M
Delivering a taste of the military direct to your private hangar, including the experience of being able to give orders to someone else, the two-seater Super Hornet lives up to its name and then some. Massive guns, big thrusters, thick armor – the specs on this top-of-class fighter are nearly X-rated, but the ass-kicking it routinely delivers is fun the whole family can enjoy.

And that’s the breakdown for this week. Are you ready to fight for your favourite? Tell us your opinion and vote!

Awesome. I have not played AC in a long time, seeing how smooth everyone is with their nice controls makes my Xbox controller cry lol :) My Joystick may get dusted off but Its older and the 360 controller is probably smoother. Definitely more comfortable lol.

So here's something to try for some nice looking screenshots, time lapse videos or simply to explore the environments from a different/better vantage point.

Go into 3rd person by pressing F4, then enable free look by pressing Z. Now tap the UP arrow key and your camera will start moving up. Keep tapping it and it'll continue going up with apparently no limit when I tested it. Protip: Holding the UP key won't do anything, you have to tap it.

Some videos I made showing the result, note how tiny the people look and you can go higher well into the clouds.

I lost all interest in Star Citizen about a year ago.

How certain people follow BLINDLY into a project, I'll never understand.

Blindly? How can you say blindly when CIG is more open about the development process than most other developers? I probably would have lost interest too if they gave us nothing to show for, but they frequently show us that the game is coming together nicely. 3.0 will be a huge leap, and once all the mechanics are in place they will just need to create content, which is a breeze for them. Squadron 42, which should be out by later this year/early next year, will be a good indicator for how the core gameplay will be for Star Citizen.

What makes you think fans are blindly following the game? Have you been keeping up on the game since you lost interest?

Not a fan of the two ships this week. Aside from them being quite buggy its hard to enjoy a demo of them with nothing to "bomb". Loved the Super Hornet though lol.

Find someone with a Starfarer and get 4-5 retaliators/gladiators to blow it up. I should make a video of it.

Intriguing, but removing wanted levels is not fun right now since Kareah is bugged for me in 2.5 and I get stuck unable to shoot, run or change weapons lol.

I'm sure they will be cool but it would be fun to demo the ships in situations where they can be used or at least partially. Replace one of the Civilian defense ICC missions with an attack the pirate carrier or something where it would be fun and functional :) Shouldnt be too hard to make the small edit even with the ships being pretty buggy, at least for me. The last few batches had some minor issues but this round is bad for me so after 30 min I went back to my owned ships.
