So those running Windows 7 Post here!

All I saw was "Memorex DVD-Rs" and I knew what the issue was... :)

Don't buy cheap media, people... it'll come back to haunt you later, seriously. But anyway, try using ImgBurn again at a slower burn speed, like half the max speed of your burner. It's free, solid, reliable, and ALWAYS VERIFY THE BURNS... always.

I have a Plextor 18x and a Lite-On 20x and I never burn faster than 8 or 12x, there's no point and I'm not that pressed for time, ever. I'd rather have solid burns than getting it done fast, and I only buy one brand of disc - TDK - even though the actual media is made by a variety of manufacturers.

Also I can't seem to get to this forum in IE8, only Firefox (3.0). Well to clarify I can get to the forum, but whenever I go into a thread, it loads, then the window turns white.

In IE8, there is an option to view pages in compatibility mode. Viewing [H]ard|Forum in compatibility mode fixes the problem.

SLOW DOWN on the burns! Try forced 4x.

Figured as much.... will try the forced 4x write speed and see what happens..:D

Edit: Ok just finished with ImgBurn forced at 4x and got the same problem...

anyone else unable to open the Gadget thing? Everytime I right click the desktop to try and add a gadget the HDD does a little thinking and then nothing happens.

Gadgets (and the right-click Gadgets option) work fine here, on Win7 32 bit and 64 bit, no issues noted so far.

I've got the same problem. I saw my gadgets once, the first time I booted into 7, and then never again lol. Haven't figured out a fix yet.

Wow, wow, wow! I have an Intel 4965AGN card in my laptop and Windows 7 automatically recognized it out of box. It even scanned surrounding networks too; I'm already very impressed.:D

Install was quite slow for me though I am using a old, shitty hard drive pulled from my Xbox 360.

UPDATE:

Using WMP right now and yes, I didn't need to download any extra codecs yet. I'm playing a couple of Top Gear episodes and I didn't need to download Xvid . Loving the minimal interface too.

I like the subtle animations of the window previews when thumbing through them. Looks like somebody's been influenced by Compiz Fusion's cooler plugins.

And... it's cool that you can actually sign on to a wireless network to set up the connection before the installation is even done... very cool stuff there. OSX won't do that on a Mac if you're installing it clean... HA! :D

The prerelease drivers is a mess for me, but the 8.12's are better.

Anyone using 1080p @ 60hz and running games etc and come back to desktop only for it to reset to 1080i @ 30hz?

I know there's no official drivers but just wondering if others are experiencing this..

EDIT: i uninstalled the driver that windows supplies (178.24) and i installed the new 181.20. i get constant 85fps now but i get this weird graphical glitch, like scan lines.. its only ingame (and i had no problems with these drivers under vista). Also to note the 178.24 driver made my screen faintly blurry, once i installed 181.20 it was definatly clearer, dont know whats up with that...

What steps did you do to install the 181.20 drivers on your comp. I have been trying with my 7800GS and the drivers end up having a problem and show up as a generic VGA device.

How much space is it taking up on peoples computers? Please specify if you have the 64bit one or 32bit.

Im hearing the space can vary a lot, like 6gbs-16gbs. I have the 64bit version and its taking up 12gbs after deleting the hibernation file.

Everyone needs to make sure they install this so they dont destroy their mp3's (64bit version, I dont have the linkto the 32bit version): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3C-9370-4FDA-B4C8-5DC63D55626D&displaylang=en

Thanks for the heads up!

Got Win7 x64 up and running... Works great. Downloaded latest ATI drivers and everything is working juuuuust fine.

Can't wait till this is gold and I can get work to start using this on my laptop.

Been working for me! Downloaded x32, got my nvidia drivers. It's nice. I'm excited to get rid of Vista as my secondary OS and use 7.

It will _never_ pass linux though

3200+
M2N-E
4 gigs of ram
7900gs

Runs nice and smooth. I love the new taskbar, and the way you can handle the windows.

15 gigs used, (x64), on a 300 gig drive.

Same problem here. I'm rather annoyed because of it as well. I hate not having the CPU meters to keep an eye on things so I've had to keep Task Manager open to view my CPU usage.

Well got it installed and running in about half an hour. Gotta say, I'm really impressed so far.
Everything installed just great, no issues at all :D.

Installed 64b and my windows folder is 10.7gig. total of 18gig of used space on my HDD total. I also installed Halo before this post, lol.

If this is a sign of how windows 7 final product will be, i'm in for a copy :D.

now i just need to get a key and all will be good.

Ok well trying it again, this time at 8x forced.... Yeah I know you are not supposed to buy cheap media but I needed something in a pinch and it was there....

Edit: well tried it again at 8x this time and still same result... Guess I will have to wait until I can buy another set of dvd-r from a better brand. What about Verbatim? Are they any good? What are the top, reliable brands?

My system

E7200 @ 3.6 ghz
8gb ddr2
p35 gigabyte ds3l
4870 512mb

I LOVE THIS WINDOWS ! Everything is snappy and smooth. Vista 64bit is quick and snappy for me also, probably cuz of the 8gb of ram, but i really like how everything looks, and so far i havnt encountered any problems. Im going to try playing some games later on.

Same problem here. I'm rather annoyed because of it as well. I hate not having the CPU meters to keep an eye on things so I've had to keep Task Manager open to view my CPU usage.

Same here, even tried un/re-registering the dlls for it.

Otherwise, bloody good beta so far, not ran into anything that doesn't work yet, though the memory usage is a bit high for my liking (using 49% of my 2gb (blue smoke happened)), better than Fista, but not great.

I'm not in a position to talk about performance at the moment, since I've been looking at the beta in VirtualBox for now, but other than that, it feels very much like Vista to me. There are some improvements, certainly, and I'd rather run 7 than Vista because of those (although I don't like the new taskbar, and suspect it will confuse new users). Not really seeing how anyone who hated Vista could love 7 though, unless it's just seeing it without prejudices and with mature drivers. Definitely an evolutionary change.

Did you verify your download was good (check the iso md5 or sha1 hash?)

all i did was run the .exe, sorry i cant be of more help.

I just got the 64bit installed last night, installed new video and audio drivers and played a couple hours of L4D with no problems. I did manage to get a blue screen crash when testing my windows experience score using the video drivers that it came with.
Does anyone want to make a new post about their updated windows experience scores?
Processor: 7.3
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 7.9
Gaming graphics: 6.0
Primary hard disk: 2.9
To compare, I have a q6700 @ 3ghz, 4gb ram, and stock speed 8800gtx. Hard drive is a partition on a 320gb seagate. (not primary hard drive)

It's long been established that WinSAT scores are BS and a waste of time comparing. If you buitl two machines with exactly the same hardware from the first screw to the finished product and installed the exact same copy of Vista or Windows 7 (meaning use the same DVD for both), and then installed the exact same video drivers, you'd end up discovering that the WinSAT scores for each would be different each time you re-ran 'em, sooo...

WinSAT was never supposed to be used as a comparison thing, it's meant to make choosing software (primarily games) easier for the average Joe (not me, I assure you) easier instead of having to read all the system requirements we've been used to seeing for well over a decade since Windows 95 came out. If a game says it requires a machine with a 4.0 rating to play well then that's easier than reading all sorts of stuff about CPUs, RAM, hard drive space, video card capabilities, etc...

Basically they're meaningless in the long run. :)

I fixed it brothers. Turn UAC back on and reboot. Problem solved.

Speaking of UAC, I love the new UAC slider. I have it set to only warn me when a program is trying to change the system. Way, way better.

Someone posted on another forum I frequent: how to get a key

HOW TO GET A BETA KEY:

(optional, some people can get it with IE only after few minutes and some people use this and never get it after trying many hours) 1. Install Firefox and Check4Change plugin

2. Start Firefox, Tools > Clear Private Data > Click "Cookies" > OK, Restart Firefox (I skipped this and it worked)

3. Open one tab, go to https://login.live.com and log-in

4. Open a second tab, go to https://profile.microsoft.com and wait for it to load

5. Open a third tab, go to https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-64-ww&LCID=1033 for a 64-bit key, https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-32-ww&LCID=1033 for a 32-bit key. Note that the keys are NOT actually tied to the architecture, but if you want to test a 32-bit version AND a 64-bit version you need two keys.

6. i'd recommend the check4change plugin and open the third link in multiple tabs, it will give you the same key no matter how many times it "finds" it so don't worry about taking too many keys.

I got my key for 32-bit and 64-bit on the first try for each!

I was wondering if anyone loaded up any games like Call of duty4 and if it worked ok?

Yes. I am. I am forcing 1080p 60hz through a catalyst profile that I have bound to a hotkey.

Had some trouble at first. It kept locking up going into setup, then it finally got into setup and then would lock up at disk.sys during boot.Solved it by unplugging my firewire connected external hard drive (an excuse to move to eSATA for me). Works very well. Don't have any of my files or apps on that hard drive so I couldn't do too much, but I am really impressed with what I see. It looks like the credential manager isn't fully implemented yet or I just havn't figured it out. The task bar is different, almost like they took OS X's dock and Windows taskbar and made combined the positive traits of each.

After playing around a bit I plugged my external HD back in and immediately was told that Windows lacked the resources to make my VIA 1394a controller available. Vista has not had a problem with it, so I reported it as an issue to Microsoft. (My tests were done using Win7 x64)

Using a spare box at a work I am going try out a real world test and let an employee use it for a couple of weeks and report back. Plus it will make for some good application compatibility testing as well.

I installed X64 last night and had zero issues until now. I cannot play COD:WAW for more than a minute without it locking my entire rig up. I have the newest 181.20 drivers installed for the GTX295. This will be a deal breaker for me, looks like I am back to Vista for the time being. I tried everything, but it always locks up and the only way out of it is to hit the reset button.
On a positive note, though, I really did like the feel of it. Maybe I'll give it a go on the next release.

Oh, one other thing. I have yellow ! next to System Interrupt Controller in the device manager. Odd.

Did you verify your download was good (check the iso md5 or sha1 hash?)

Ok really starting to get ticked off now.... So I now have a key (was downloading from the neowin website that still had the download available) from the microsoft site but their "download button" does nothing for me..

How do I check the MD5 and SHA1 Hash to verify its a good download?
Just noticed this in my downloads folder... I have two files by the same name but one ends in iso.part? ImgBurn does not recognize this file..
twofiles.jpg

everything installed, but i was wondering if anyone know how to remove the watermark from the desktop, it's annoying

Thanks to Sovereign for tips about getting a key, that worked.

I am using x64

CPU 6.2
Memory 5.9
Graphics 7.5
Gaming Graphics 6.1
Hard Disk 5.4 (using a 250GB WD JS drive)

Finally got AHCI to install after I got Win7 on there, but was unable to get Catalyst to install so I got the driver from Windows Update. Driver recognition is impressive, my sound card, TV tuner, and LAN all worked. Had to install Intel INFs to get the SMBus recognized.

The .part file is an incomplete download, its useless you'll have to delete it and start that one over.

To test the hash go to microsoft.com, search for fciv download it and put the fciv.exe somewhere in the path like your windows directory. MS should just include this with windows, but they don't.

Anyways, once you have that install, open a command prompt and go to your downloads directory. Run

fciv -sha1 <download name>

For the x86 beta it should be 6071184282B2156FF61CDC5260545C078CCA31EE

for x64 E09FDBC1CB3A92CF6CC872040FDAF65553AB62A5

Those are based on the technet values, but I'm almost positive the public betas are the same way. Someone else here might be able to confirm. The filenames are different though from what I have and what is in your screenshot so I don't know for sure.

I have Win 7 x64 installed on my Inspiron 1420. C2D 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 5400RPM 120GB HDD, and nVidia 8400M video card.

Install found everything but working audio drivers and my video. Loaded the newest Beta Vista x64 video drivers from nVidia and grabbed the latest audio drivers from Dell. Fixed both those issues.

Spybot, Spywareblaster, and Antivir work great. Firefox 3 and all my extensions work great too. Office 2007 installed just fine and runs beautifully. Windows Update has no issues updating Office.

Haven't tried a whole lot of other things yet but I only have two minor issues so far. One is my HDD performance number under the Windows Experience. I get 2.0 no matter what. Under Vista it's not that slow. Dunno what's causing it. It's not performing slowly that's for sure. Seems just as fast as under Vista.

Second my Synaptic Touchpad functions but the vertical and horizontal scrolling parts don't work. Dell drivers won't install and the Synaptic drivers from their website install but don't correct the functionality. So will probably have to wait on updated drivers.

Anybody know how to correct either of those problems?
