So those running Windows 7 Post here!

Anyone tried out any gaming yet? I'm curious to see how the performance is vs vista. Anyone run any benchmarks?

I'm running the 64x version, so far no problems. I'm pretty impressed based upon first impressions. I got everything to work.

Stupid question, is Windows Aero featured in the beta? I can't find the option anywhere.

Yes but you need valid video drivers to do it.

I installed the latest Beta nvidia Vista x64 drivers for my 8400M to get Aero functional.

Hmm weird, I have the latest beta drivers installed but there is no option listed.

Edit: I guess it's there because I can do the Aero shake option.

The Windows Experience Index raised the bar to 7.9, but it seems like it's really harsh on standard 7200rpm drives. Maybe Microsoft thinks everyone is buying into SSD and 10k rpm drives ?

As fciv doesn't seem to be a native tool in Windows 7 (at least it's not on my installations anywhere that I can find it, not even with a dedicated search), here's the download page:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290

Yah, its not included with the client OS at all (can't remember if server 08 has it). Kinda stupid that they don't include it but its one of the first things I install on any new system.

Ah good so it's probably a bug? :p

And yes I know it's a useless tool but it is fun for bragging rights with some of my co-workers. :p

My laptop dropped to a 2.0 since the 5400RPM drive got a 2.0...

Ruined my day, utterly and completely :D

Processor: 5.7
Memory: 5.5
Graphics: 6.9
Gaming graphics: 5.5
HDD: 5.0

System in sig, hard drive is a 5400rpm 160gb laptop drive :p

Well I installed it on a Dell Inspirion 9300 Dell laptop. The only driver that had to be downloaded was the video driver, and it was on windows update. Everything is working great so far. 2.0 ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM. Just in case anybody was thinking twice about installing on a Dell I figured I would throw this out there.

So far im really impressed. I like the features they added to the Task Bar. The GUI Navigation changes are highly welcomed and makes it so much easier to navigate the structure.

I did notice some performance issues though. I was copy 13 gigs of music from my network share into the My Music folder and everything became unresponsive. Even just trying to use Firefox and click some links, it would take like 30 seconds to respond. Even if im installing some random program, seems like the system becomes unresponsive. Never had these performance problems in Vista. It very could be a simple driver problem that will get address when some "official" Windows 7 drivers come out. I am using the computer in my signature btw.

Yea I noticed it took a while to add my music, and it was local. But I figured it was my slow ass laptop HD.

I'm trying it, but it didn't install the LAN driver for my onboard networking on my IP35-E, anyone else having a problem (or solution)?

Running an AMD here but, my previous 64 bit drivers didn't work either until I did some sleuthing. Got the newest ones from Marvell (updated yesterday !!) and it works fine now.

Other then that I like what I see more then Vista. Seems less bloated. This could be a OS that I could stick with! :D

Processor : 5.7
Memory : 6.9
Graphics 7.9
Gaming Graphics 6.0
Hard Disk 5.3 (5 year old ata100 120gb drive, my 400gb sata2 is on the way from RMA!)

Total Score is 5.3

Anyone know how to make it so you can see your Vista partition? For some stupid reason they felt the need to hide it from you.

Not very good, I tried Prince of Persia and the framerate jumps from normal to slow motion a lot (not low FPS, but actually slow motion and then it fast fowards, its weird). And the girls hair looks weird.

Windows 7 isnt ready for games yet.

I totally agree with that :D.

It gave my 7200rpm drive a 3.0 rating, lol.

It gave mine a 2.5 :(. And you know how that goes... Time to upgrade the drives. Gonna look into 2 x WD 640GB drives and raid those bitches. Everything else of mine scored a 6 and higher.

Just installed the x64 version on a 5-year-old nForce2 board.

Total installation time (from boot DVD to desktop) was 40 minutes.

Boot time is 20 seconds to login (not including POST)
10 seconds to desktop, 10 more seconds until all HD activity ceases,

Idle memory consumption is ~530MB. It's just as responsive as XP, though I haven't really started playing yet.

I'm running Win 7 x64 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop

C2D 1.83
2 GB Ram
120GB 5400RPM HDD
Mobility Radeon x1400

I'm impressed at how well it runs. It feels a lot faster then Vista SP1 32bit that was on the laptop before. I like the small GUI changes from Vista. So far this is a day one purchase.

Ha, same here. (check sig)

Everything was picked up on it as well, I'm impressed right now.

yeah, totally suprised. my laptop came with vista on it originally, and I'd say 7 runs about as smooth as xp. really impressed so far, and I have not had any problems at all!

My laptop is similar (Core Duo 1.73, 60GB HDD, Mobility Radeon X1300) and the 32-bit build runs very well. Better than Vista, I think.

anyone know how to remove the watermark from the desktop?? i've tried some but they don't work :(

OK, I don't care if this is Mojave :) . So far Win7 is a lot faster than Vista. Loaded the 64bit version (30 minutes to a usable desktop). I have a MS Access macro that runs 198 queries against a main table of 355,000 records against linked databases containing between 800,000 and 11,000,000 records. The queries create reports, update data, check data, etc. The first and last commands in the macro create a printed timestamp. XP 32bit runs the macro in 21 minutes 7 seconds. In Vista 64bit, I usually give up after the first hour or so. Win7 runs the macro in 21 minutes 58 seconds. The speed difference between Vista and Win7 appears to be in disk access and how fast data is pulled from the disks.

Needless to say, for a beta version, I am impressed!

I'm running win7 on two systems:

Primary gaming system: E6600, 4gigs, 4870 1gig, x-fi : Works flawlessly with everything except skype

Old backup system: AMD Barton 1.4 mobile @ 2.5, 2 gigs, 9800pro, onboard sound: Just as fast as XP (obviously without the fancy desktop of the top system)

This is what Vista should have been, and considering how they're developing Win7 compared to Vista, things can only get better.

Been running the 64-bit version on my Vostro 1500 with no major issues so far. I tried installed SRWare Chrome and it did not work. Tried out the new Firefox beta (3.1 I think?) and that works like a charm. I liked that it found all my drivers for my laptop too (8600GT, Webcam, and Ricoh drivers).

For you guys who run P4/Pentium Dual Cores etc with 1GB of ram, how does the OS run for you? I've seen a couple people say that it's OK but comparing it specifically to XP?

running the 32bit version in vmware seems ok so far, it is as fast as xp under vmware on the same system

I think I've got this installed on about the crappiest machine out there from what I've seen on this thread. I pulled it out of the closet. It had XP on it before and it ran XP just sorta OK. Far slower than my current E2200 desktop even.

ECS K7VTA3 version 8.0 - Via KT333 board
Athlon XP 3000+ - 333 bus not 400
1GB generic, no name RAM (2x512)
80GB Maxtor 6Y080P0 PATA133 hard drive
GeForce3 Ti200 64MB
NEC 8x DVD burner
Floppy drive :D
Soundblaster Live! Value
Tekram DC-390F SCSI Card
Plextor UltraPlex 32x SCSI CD-ROM (still the best ripper I've ever had...)

Install took about 20 minutes. Of course then I had to install AV and FF3, along with associated things such as Flash and Acrobat Reader so that took another 20 minutes or so.

GeForce3 Ti200 was NOT working at first, and no drivers were available. I had to go into the Nvidia legacy products area and download the XP driver. I set that driver .exe in XP compatibility mode and installed, amazingly, that worked. I am now rockin the Ti200 at 1680x1050. No Aero interface though of course.

The Tekram is not working and I don't hold out any hope that I can find any workable drivers anywhere for it. Does Windows 7 even support SCSI?

I have another device besides the Tekram that has a bang mark in the Device Manager, it says it's a "PCI Input Device". Well the only cards I have are the video, sound and SCSI and those are all accounted for so I'm not sure what this could be. Oh well. I'm not going to worry about it.

Windows 7 seems to run as well or better than XP did on this system. Even with only 1GB of RAM, booting up to the desktop with no applications running results in about 450MB of RAM usage. That's pretty close to XP. CPU usage seems to be pretty low as well, it seems to park around 7% most of the time (and as I'm typing this). Dragging a window around rapidly will cause the CPU usage to spike though, I'm guessing because the desktop is not 3D-accelerated. Maybe a DX9/Aero compatible video card would fix that issue.

Overall I have to say I'm pleased so far. With Avira installed, and Firefox and 4 tabs open, memory usage is sitting now at 49%. The system is responsive and snappy. I haven't had any problems installing the gadgets on my desktop that I normally use with Vista. I really think that for an older machine where the primary purpose was surfing the web and checking email, 7 would be a viable option to XP, especially if less than 2GB of memory is installed. IMO Vista needs a minimum of 2GB. During the time I typed this paragraph, memory load decreased to 46%. This OS seems to be really aggressive on optimizing RAM usage.

I would really like to get an AGP card for cheap that is compatible with Aero and see how that affects things on this system.

[edit] OK whoops! I just tried to refresh my Windows Experience Index and got a hard lock...LOL. I guess it doesn't like those XP 3D drivers much :D

So here's what I had from the first run with "Generic VGA Adapter"
Processor 3.4
RAM 4.1
Graphics 1.0
Gaming Graphics 1.0
Primary Hard Disk 5.1

I have an AGP 6600gt somewhere in my pile of crap...I need to find it for this system so I can run Aero.

I have been impressed, I am running it on two systems a laptop and my main rig. The laptop was a fresh install of 64bit workes flawlessly tad faster than Vista. On my desktop I tried the update rather than fresh install (i know...experiment) it died the first time but reverted itself successfully. I then tried again and it worked fine.

All of the installed software worked great. Its definately more responsive, but there are limits. Network transfers and file transfers between drives is still imo seems slower than XP or Linux. I think its more of the security/integrity of the transfer than a strictly performance issue. Plus there is time for them to keep improving.

I would definately but this... however having purchased Vista I would hope for an upgrade or discount all things considered.

Installed Windows 7 on sig rig in 25 minutes flat, from the time I inserted the disk to the desktop. Lots of the default programs have gotten nice facelifts and quite a few additional features. Feels more responsive than Vista as a whole. Windows Update got me all my drivers (besides motherboard ones, I had to install those to get to the interweb). It even detected my video card mid-way through installation and kicked up the screen res to my native 22" screen.

Couldn't play Far Cry 2 though, I could get audio but would just stare at a blank black screen.

Screenie :)

Finally got mine to work...Seems that the dvd media really did make a difference. Picked up some TDK discs and the first burn worked right off the bat. From what I could the system worked great, was very snappy and quick however Windows 7 does not recognize my onboard nic (using the rig in my sig). From what I could tell I really like the new look and feel of 7. Really liked how responsive it was. I will have to take it to work and run it on a spare system and see what it can really do.

Why not use the 64 bit version? Really no reason not to, with that rig.

Geezus... don't quote pics will ya, good lord. Delete the image tags and everything in between and type *snip* or something...

Oh, and to those with screenshots: you can change the colors and the wallpaper, yanno... hehe That damned fish, I swear...

Too lazy to download the x64 bit after I'd started the 32 bit (like 3/4 way through). I'm going to download it tonight to see if there are any noticeable speed differences.

Joe: Who doesn't love a betafish? :p
