So those running Windows 7 Post here!

i kind of like the fish.
played around with the voice recognition a lot. great feature!
played star craft all night on the laptop. ran just fine. played a little ut2004 earlier..., had strange wobbly screen issues when the resolution was set to the native res, had to run lower, never ran it before on laptop so not sure if it was 7, or my crappy vid card. about to install on rig in sig in the morning and will see how well it runs.

Upgraded from Vista x64 with SP2 beta. Everything worked perfectly, but had to reinstall video drivers. So far it runs really well.

Tomorrow I'm gonna see how well the 32bit version runs on a 2.6 P4 with 1gb or ram...

im trying out both 64,and 32 bit versions.i got the 64 bit version running on a turion64x2 cpu in an hp laptop.the 32 bit version im running on an acer aspire one.it has a 1.6 intel atom cpu.this acer netbook is way faster with windows 7 than it was with xp.to be honest both of em are alot faster than before.so far im really loving 7.:D

Just remember guys with the lower requirements, If you just installed Windows 7 on your pc and it seems much faster, well Every computer is gonna seem faster after a new install. But I agree so far I like Windows 7.

Running win7 on system in sig on 2x7200.10 320gb drives in raid 0.

So far so good. The only hiccup i had was the creative x-fi drivers, they wouldnt install. But i ran the installer in vista compatablity mode and it went through without any more issue.

anyone able to install Logmein?

Logmein didn't work properly for me with IE8 Beta in Vista. However after upgrading Vista to the Win7 Beta, IE8 did it's thing and seems to run it fine. This is the x64 version of windows (32bit browser though)

Vista ran like a dog for me on any machine with 1GB of RAM, even freshly installed.

Double true. I cringe when I work on a customer's PC that's running Vista w/ only 1gb. It is painfully slow... Like XP on 128mb ram with Norton IS doing boot up scan kinda slow. I'd rather punch myself in the testies repeatedly than wait for it to allocate resources for a mouse click.

If Win7 runs well on my old hardware then it will truly get my approval. Right now it's on my laptop w/ 2ghz C2D and 4gb ram. Run like buttah, but then again, so did Vista.

They finally got rid of the kernel dispatcher spinlock, which had been a perf bottleneck since the original Windows NT. It may not have a huge effect on most consumer systems, but for high-performance and multiple CPU farms, it's a very significant change.

Update on my Win7 x64 installation on a gaming machine from 2004.

Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0 GHz single core)
Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra 939 (nForce3 chipset)
1GB DDR400 Corsair XMS (2x512)
BFG Geforce 6800GT OC (AGP 8x)
Netgear GA311 Wired Ethernet (PCI)
Maxtor 200GB (PATA)

I've never seriously used Vista so if any of my observations are WTLW my bad... :p

All the major hardware was detected during installation except for the nVidia RAID and sil3112 driver but Windows Update picked those up and installed them automatically.
The onboard network ports were blown up by a nearby lightning strike a while back so I turned them off in the BIOS.
During the install, I had a Linksys LNE100TX v5 10/100 card on the PCI bus. WARNING: There are NO 64-bit Windows drivers for this card AT ALL. I swapped in the Netgear GA311 from my main rig (whose onboard LAN ports were also blown up in the same storm) and the internet setup prompts came up. I really like how intuitive the prompts, menus, security center, control panel, etc. feel. And I like the UAC. It's not as annoying as people made it out to be in Vista (although I understand they toned it down a lot) and I appreciate the extra security of knowing every program that's running on the PC and what it's doing. On that note, the Resource Monitor kicks a$$!! I have about a dozen separate programs on my XP box (TCPView, Process Explorer, etc.) to monitor what programs are doing. It's great to have it all in one place now.

There's still an unknown device in Device Manager but everything appears to be working so I haven't bothered with it. The sound (Realtek ALC850) stutters really bad... from what I've read, that's a driver issue. If worse comes to worse, I'll pull the X-Fi out of my main rig.

There's another drive in the box with XP on it. It usually spins down and goes to sleep while I'm in Win7, but all versions of Windows spin up sleeping hard drives during shutdown or sometimes for no clear reason at all. I never understood why they couldn't work around the necessity to write the "clean shutdown" flag to a sleeping drive...That takes several seconds and adds an unnecessary start/stop cycle to the drive. This behavior still exists in Win7.

I was impressed when Windows found drivers for the 2 storage controllers automatically, plus a new video driver version, and applied all 3 of them in place WITHOUT NEEDING A REBOOT! Same goes for the 400+MB of Office 2007 patches I grabbed from Microsoft Update, which is seamlessly integrated into the Windows Update part of Win7.

Idle memory consumption is 530MB ±100MB -- drastically depends on what I'm doing. Immediately after booting, it's usually around 530MB. If I run basic apps (word, excel, firefox, ie8, etc.) and close them, idle memory is up 100MB. If I run something memory-intensive and close it, idle memory is down 100MB.

Gaming-wise I'm obviously RAM-limited but I did play through a few levels of HL2. It stuttered for the first minute while stuff was swapping out. After that, it was smooth as butter. (except for the sound glitch I mentioned). Upon exiting the game, I was using 412MB at idle. The physical memory graph history was around 80-90%.

In conclusion, with an extra 1GB RAM, this 5-year-old computer would be ready for Win7 Ultimate. The Aero interface works even on a DX9 card and looks fantastic. It's far more "Win7 ready" than a lot of the PCs in that early "Vista ready" Celeron/512MB fiasco.

Those are my impressions so far. I gotta say, I'm mad impressed with it. As long as MS doesn't totally screw it up between now and launch, and DRM intrusiveness isn't "excessive" (relative term), I'll be in the line to buy it when it comes out.

Yah, the lack of necessity for rebooting to install drivers and most updates is a big boon to uptime junkies. I never saw the hassles with a reboot now and again, but some people chastise Microsoft for it constantly.

Windows 7 seems to alleviate that now - at least from the performance of the OS itself - so it remains to be seen which idiotic developers writing applications for Windows will continue to do things the old way and actually dare ask for a reboot when something is installed... ;)

What's up with IE8 and HardOCP forums? Whenever I click on a thread I just get a blank page. Had to install Opera to fix it.

OK, thanks, done. Think I'll just continue with Opera though as it is less hassle.

The same day I get Win7 installed and start to mess around with it, my cats kills my g5. It's the 2nd G5 he's killed, apparently he likes the braid on the cord. So I have to wait for a MX518 in the mail, suposedly a downgrade but reviewers seem to like it more than the g5. Anyway, 7 seems pretty cool so far.

I sniped a 6600 out of a dead computer, now I gots Aero!

Drivers are the built in WDDM drivers. Did have to reboot though.

Windows Experience:

CPU 3.4
Memory 4.1
Graphics 4.8
Gaming Graphics 4.2
Hard Disk 5.1

Funny to say that the experience of this machine is 3.4. I've used some systems with lower experience ratings that were way faster, but had low scores due to integrated video.

Quite ironic that your cat killed your mouse.

Installed it works great for the most part, but so far, it is not getting along with my Audigy 2. Sound just randomly drops in games and does not return til I restart the game. The games I have had sound drop in so far are L4D, TF2, Peggle, and the Solitaire that ships with Win7.

I get that too, clicking on the "compatibility view" button just left of the "refresh" button seems to fix it. But [H]forums still loads very slowly using IE8 compared to FF3.

Installing right now on a core 2 machine and a virtual machine, will post results and problems soon

blew up my main rig and installed 7. planning on running it for the entire free year. feedback is turned ON, im hoping for a free license :D

Installed it on a Lenovo S10 netbook (1gig ram, atom, 5400RPM drive) via a USB stick.

It took forever to install that way, and around the 85% point it crashed saying it was unable to updated the boot configuration. Turned out to be related to how my partitions were set up, Win7 got confused (this little netbook boots XP, Linux and now Windows 7). After a visit to the technet forums (MS actually reads/responds there), I found the fix.

Learned some nice bits of trivia. During the installation process, you can hit shift+f10 to bring up a command prompt. Windows 7 keeps install logs in \$windows.~bt\sources\panther\setupact.log. Installing via a usb key, you can easily copy that file out to read somewhere else.

Anyway, now I have Win7 running on a netbook. Turned off all the visual crap and made it look as close to XP as possible. Out of habit. So far so good, but theres nothing really compelling for me in Windows 7. Nicest new feature is the 'drag windows to the top to maximize' thing.

I initially had Windows 7 x64 installed to dual boot with Vista x64 but I was so impressed with W7 that promptly deleted my Vista partition and reclaimed the space :)

For a beta OS W7 is blo*dy amazing. All my hardware works flawlessly and 99% of my Vista applications work perfectly under W7. I had a issue installing my X-FI drivers but after running the setup in compatibility mode, they installed fine.
The performance of W7 is so much better than Vista on the same hardware that I can see the hardware requirements for W7 being less than it is for Vista, which is unheard of for a new Windows OS and performance will only get better as the drivers mature.

So far, the only real issues I've had are with Google Chrome and Logmein, though I have found a fix for the logmein, which I will try tonight when I get home.

Well done Microsoft, keep up the good work.

Ok HOLY CRAP IM SOLD!!!!
Vista Ultimate x64 has been the bane of my existence with my Canon 20D DSLR. Would not recognize or install drivers, finally got it to recognize the camera but would throw errors after that constantly while camera was plugged in. After a weeks worth of research found that the camera is just not compatible with Windows Vista PERIOD...

Figured the same thing with Win 7. Plugged camera in and 5 minutes later it was done installing all drivers and was asking me if I would like to import image!!! WTF?!!! No errors what-so-ever... Very impressed now.

Ran WAR for about 2hrs last night with only one crash to desktop. Normally if that happens Vista would take approximately 10mins to be fully usable again. Crash in Win 7 resulted in a full crash to desktop, and system was usable in under 5 minutes!!!

Again so far, the problems that I have had in Vista are either non-existent in Win 7 or can be easily fixed. Very Impressed!!!!

I have it running on an HP 3.2 celeron D, 1.5gig ram, 80gig hdd. Found all the drivers but the modem on this pc. Boots fast and aero is running. I like the shake feature.

Windows 7 is 100000000x better then Vista.

It goes like this:

OSX>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>windows 7>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Vista
:)

Do you always have to go around saying how much better OS X is than windows? I've noticed this in quite a few threads.

OSX >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Linux as a desktop OS, you're crazy man ;)

Windows 7>>>>>>>>Vista, it no longer takes eons to start up nor does it take 5 minutes to open my computer on my VM with 1GB RAM. Of course it's not even close to OS X since it's still........windoze :)

Windows=spyware galore, imo it sucks, until dlls and registry are abolished windows will never be as stable as Linux and OSX(best OS in the universe). But thats just imo :)

It's windows that would automatically disqualify it from being a good OS ;)

Vista is ok but I prefer XP because it runs much faster on a virtual machine. However both are still junk compared to Leopard ;)

I love my 15" macbook pro with leopard, but I think each OS has features that make them pretty much a wash in terms of superiority.

I have it running in virutualbox on my Ubuntu laptop (not very impressive specs) and it seems to be quite an upgrade from Vista, once I find myself some black DVD's I think I am going to throw this on a spare computer and see how it run.

Is the tv tuner applications installed on this? I have a media center PC that I have screwed up the XP install on and am wondering how well this would work?

7 is pretty friggin sweet. had a few driver issues initially but the driver compatability tool fixed those in quick order. Playing DVD's straight out of the gate with no need for decoder software or a seperate DVD player, AWESOME !

Have not tried any games yet, that will come next. Then will set up my TV with it to see how that fares.

Gotta say overall I'm impressed and rightly so. Seems snappier than VIsta, not too shabby for a BETA.

I have a question for you guys that are upgrading "all" of your computers to the Beta, what happens in July when the software stops working?

Thats my only thing, I would upgrade my home gaming rig, but dont want to be without a usable OS come July.

If windows 7 is out, I'll pick up a copy and reinstall. If it isn't, I'll have my macbook pro by then :D. Either way, I won't be going back to Vista or Windows XP.

Beta 1 is supposed to expire in August.

Either way, Beta 2 or a RC will be out by then.

I did a full, clean install on a different drive than what Vista was on. When 7 expires I'll format that drive back to free space.

I can't report the same thing. It's still definitely Beta Quality software. But then again, it is Beta software. There were several drivers I had to load Vista versions of after downloading them from Intel and DFI (My mobo). There are issues with getting it to print to the laser printer I have attached to my Windows Home Server. Technically the HP 1012 isn't supported under Vista or 7, but under vista I can just map an LPT port to the share and manual load a generic driver to get it to work. This work around didn't work under 7. Then there is screwiness going on with the sound. I use the built in sound device for general windows sound, games, etc. I also have a Mono-headset (USB) that is being made the default sound device and refusing to allow me to change it. I can temporarily get it to work right by using media player, but on reboot it once again makes the usb headset the default audio device. I only use the headset for VoIP apps.

These are the biggies so far. I may find more as I test more but until these two problems are resolved I can't use Win7 as my primary OS.

Sounds more like driver issues than the OS per se. My Brother 9840CDW all-in-one color laser printer works perfectly fine using the Vista x64 drivers. The same with my Bluetooth audio and built in audio with my tx2z tablet pc.

My problem is the lack of a driver for the digitizer for my tx2z. The pen works and the touch does as well but the real drivers have an automatic mode so that the pen and touch don't conflict. I contacted the digitizer maker and they said that they'll have a driver out shortly.

The tablet features are really a big step forward in Windows 7 even from Vista so I'll just keep 7 on a separate hard drive and switch back and forth.

In Win7 x64, 1GB is enough RAM for browsing and office productivity apps and old games. It is not enough for software development or (obviously) newer games.

I ran Half-Life 2 at 1280x1024 with all settings on High. The OS had to reduce its memory footprint, causing a lot of swapping for the first 30-60 seconds of gameplay. After the first minute, the game is ran buttery smooth with no hiccups.

Installing Visual Studio 2008 killed the performance. Boot times doubled and the IDE was unusable from all the swapping going on. Plus, it added like 15 programs to the uninstall programs menu..it was quicker and easier just to go back to an earlier System Restore point.

I've got PowerISO v4.3.something installed and it leaks memory like a sieve when reading from a mounted image. As a result, installing large programs from iso images is really slow due to swapping. But memory usage returns to normal immediately after unmounting the image.

took a chance and installed it as an upgrade over my vista 64 ultimate without backing up my data. No problems at all!!! Everything works.
