Skyrim Modding Megathread

I think that's totally inaccurate. There is little to no risk if you research first and follow directions.

So I'm doomed :p

That's the problem with modding though, half the time by the time I get finished researching, downloading the ones I want and playing around to test them, I can't be arsed actually playing the game anymore. It happens so often with games people praise for their modability, I mod them and by the time I'm finished modding them I can't be fucked playing the actual game.

So maybe I'll just wait for a big texture pack like Qarl's or something that fixes the LOD issues.

Hyper repost ;)

In any case, after the bugs were fixed, it works fine. I have a very noticable framerate increase in places like Markarth and Solitude.
sorry :) I'm on vacation and didn't have a lot of time to dig through this thread. In any case, there were some reported issues with the patch initially but those look to have been resolved.

With the exception of a handful of mods (added keybindings for instance), none of these mods are going to have any real impact on your enjoyment of the game. Even the best mods don't make a huge difference, as the game looks pretty good out of the box. Maybe that will change when the creation kit comes out, but for now the reward just doesn't seem like it's worth the risk to me. Enjoy the game for your first playthrough, then consider modding it. That's my 2 cents.

I disagree. Skyrim is MUCH more immersive with the extra 4GBs of textures and mods that I have installed.

Play vanilla for a few hours then you can find out what you want changed.

This is how i started, it's the only way to start! If you haven't played the game, start vanilla... then the more you play you'll notice things that Bethesda did which you don't agree with. And then you can go to the nexus and find the fix to it.

for instance, when i made my paladin I found that wards were REALLY underwhelming due to having to channel them and their absurd mana cost and retarded scaling. So i saved and quit, searched nexus, found the mod to fix it, installed it, and in probably 5 minutes was back in the game with functional wards.

I do all my modding on the fly this way. That's what i love about elder scrolls games. The mods are so diverse and plentiful that you really can create an experience unique to your tastes.

It would be understandable having a mod overload if you were to try to get all the mods up front for a play-through.

edit: Don't know if this was posted, but it's nice seeing new weapons in the game. Variety for the win! Weapons of the Third Era

Repost. ;) Too bad m3ta1head has yet to update the OP. I spent ~50 minutes gathering mods for the #801 post in this thread and it seems to have been a waste of my time.

Ah!! Well, due to the OP's state, i'm sure my repost will get it some more exposure (really not trying to nag on you, m3ta1head!! OP's take time).. is there a way perhaps he could (or a mod could assist) in getting the op public to edit? That way it could be a collaborative effort or something, i dunno.

I think I'm going to give the acceleration layer mod a try when I get home. There isn't much that I want to change aside from the speeding the game up and replacing some of these god awful low res textures.

I'll start with the acceleration layer, then see which texture mods are worth trying.

Ah see now there's a mod I could enjoy. I've never played a game where I found myself saying "man, there's just too many weapons in this game...if only there were less this game would be so much better!"

The mo weapons, the mo better. I would be concerned though how these weapons are implemented into the game, and whether or not they would throw off the game's balance. I'll have to look into it...

So far (though i've only seen a couple clubs and some tantos) they seem balanced.

Are there any simple .ini tweaks that improve image quality but do not threaten the stability of the game? I wouldn't mind squeezing a little more out of my rig.

I haven't applied those shadow tweaks, but i read the thread following the [H] review, and i recall many users saying that they had to half the posted iShadowMapResolution=8192 for it to work well

Yeah, the shadow setting destroyed my frame rates indoors. Nvidia also has a short .ini optimization guide up at their Geforce site.

Ah ok, I didn't actually test the shadows, just did the uGrids and Grass. Running perfectly stable for me, haven't had any major crash in the 30 or so hours I've been playing except a couple of alt+tab related random program closing.

I haven't touched ugrids myself yet, though i'd like to now that nvidia has a new patch out and there's the acceleration layer mod.

What ugrids are you using, and what hardward do you have?

The main thing I hate in Skyrim is the medium-to-long-distance LOD, so uGrids was the first thing I played with. I don't mind how things look up close (not brilliant, but acceptable), long range looks ok, medium-to-short range looks great, but medium-long range looks like chunky vomit, I'd love to see a mod that replaces some of the textures and models in that LOD bracket. But anyway...

fGrassStartFadeDistance=14000.0000
uGridstoLoad=7

i5 750 @ stock clocks
GTX460 768MB @ stock
290.53 drivers with nv investigator to limit framerate (reduces mouse lag)
8GB RAM
P55A-UD3
etc etc

I should probably try overclocking the CPU, had it running at 3.9GHz for a while but saw no tangible benefit in games and it consumed an arseload more power, so I put it back to stock. Maybe it'll be of benefit in Skyrim though.

Yeah, I wonder if I wrote down my best stable CPU clocks and voltages somewhere, I really can't be bothered spending all that time stability testing again!

EDIT: Any links to the LOD replacers? I looked and couldn't find anything.

EDIT2:
Hmmm, I've been playing around with the acceleration layer mod in the past couple of hours of gameplay. At Dragonsreach, overlooking Whiterun, it improved my performance by 8fps... BUT, I have noticed more random-non-framerate related stutter. Previously the game would stutter occasionally from low framerate, acceleration layer reduced that stutter, but since I've been using it I noticed a few times the game would just pause for a second here and there, without the framerate dropping. Maybe this is why Bethesda didn't include the acceleration layer in the game themselves? They felt it wasn't consistent? I dunno, just my observation.

Hm...ya know, that's interesting. Yesterday I was playing and noticed some stuttering. I thought to myself "I swear the game didn't stutter this much before...?"

I wonder if it is, in fact, the acceleration layer.

I OCed my 2500k and gained 10-15 FPS easy. I threw the script extender in and gained another 5 FPS and got rid of much of the stuttering (along with the 290.53 drivers). <3 script extender

The show ground shadow and tree tweaks by themselves are very good quality. The shadow map 8192 I do not recommend, it can absolutely detroy your FPS. I've found that 2048 for shadowmap, primary, and secondary, provides an improvement without much performance loss.

Again, does anyone have a tweak to improve moss popin on castles? It pops in very late to the scene.

R3 of SkyBoost is out (yay!). It is based off of TESVAL with a few enhancements. In some areas, I get 7FPS more than TESVAL.

Scriptdragon is not required.

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1325462-skyboost-topic-2/

The Readme says to make sure I'm not using TESVAL.dll and to delete that file. Well I have TESVAL.asm. Am I okay to have the .asm in there?

EDIT

Getting no FPS difference after copying the files. Hmm?

What is TESVAL.asm? Where did you get it from?

I thought it was part of that Acceleration Layer.

A file from TESVAL-1.3.10.0-2011-12-22-Source.zip.

EDIT

Apparently I downloaded the wrong Acceleration file. I downloaded it from a link on Bethesda forums. Just went to Nexus and got the file and the .dll was there, not .asm.

TESVAL.dll is the only part that you need. the .asm file is the source file. You do NOT use the source files unless you are tinkering with the file.

Edit: As stated in the readme:
"2. Copy the Data folder from the archive over your existing Skyrim Data folder, replacing files. TESVAL.dll should end up at <skyrim root>/Data/SKSE/Plugins/TESVAL.dll. Ignore the 'src' folder, it is only useful for programmers."

Yeah, the original zip file I downloaded only contained source files. Must of read the link wrong.

Is there an Acrobatics mod yet? Or at least any tweaks to smooth out some of the vertical movement issues? I really wish there was a way to fix some of the jumping, climbing, and getting stuck on random obstacles in the game.
(for someone who doesn't have time to read all 22 pages of this massive thread) lol

I'm 80 hours into the game now, and the only thing I really can't stand is that there's no Acrobatics perc to let me jump higher! And the movement system is just plain terrible in comparison to a lot of other games. I am constantly running into objects and getting stuck, or trying to jump onto/over something, getting stuck on the ledge, and having to wiggle my way up onto the upper surface. Seems like a mod to increase the jump height by about 20% would fix the majority of the issues I have with this game.
Also, a mod to smooth out the movement for basic vertical navigation would be awesome. Like when you run into a log or rock on the ground, you should automatically walk up and over it instead of getting stuck. If said mod would also make mountain climbing slightly easier that would be great!

And I guess being able to mantle up onto ledges would be way too much to ask, as it might interfere with various quest setups. But man that would be nice to have when out wandering in the wilderness...

edit - k, at least I found a console command for this: "player.setgs fjumpheightmin 120" (default is 100?). That should be close enough to what I was looking for.

holy shit....nice!

EDIT

Upon further inspection....

- Not a huge fan of the font used. Looks out of place with the rest of the HUD.
- I've favorited several weapons and they aren't showing under "Weapons" category.
- Wabbajack and my potions and any magic spells appears under "Other"

Isn't the font the same as the rest of the font used in the menus but smaller?

For the two other bullet points, it sounds like something is not working right. Your magic spells should be showing except I noticed dragonskin wasn't (easily fixed) and I think some midas spells. As for potions, you are using better sorting and, as stated in the readme, it messes up how things are reported. This can be easily fixed as well. Tip: look in the config file for the mod.

Here is my setup:

Tudz i'm curious to see if you also experience the stuttering with Skyboost R3 vs TESV Acceleration layer

can someone please tell me the best current mods for skyrim? haven't played in a month or so, and haven't been up2date with the mod releases.

I just want the game to look better please. :)

thanks,^

though isn't there some kind of 'megapack' mod thing like the fallout ones, with everything included in one big thing?

I've posted this in the other thread but want to share here also.

OK here are my results now that I've tested both Skyrim Acceleration Layer (SKSE) and Sky Boost R3

Sky Boost = HOLY @#)$#*@!

I have a 2500k OCed to 4.4ghz. I found a heavily CPU bound area, which was as soon as you enter the Whiterun front gates and are staring at the building that's just to the left (which is across from your home). I disabled VSYNC both in INI and in the CP. I'm using a blend of Ultra settings with ugrids @ 7 and some shadow tweaks.

With no acceleration I was at 40 FPS
With SKSE AL I was at 40 FPS. (other area's though i've found this gives me a 5-6 FPS boost *VERIFIED*)
With Sky Boost R3 - 60 FPS. That's a 20 FPS gain. Whiterun was absolutely buttery smooth as I could possible want!
I also went to Riften and Markarth and the FPS was butter @ 60 FPS. I'm absolutely floored at how much more smooth this game is now.

I absolutely recommend Skyboost R3 over the SKSE Acceleration Layer mod. Plus with Sky Boost you don't need to run a separate executable.
