Skyrim Modding Megathread

I've posted this in the other thread but want to share here also.

OK here are my results now that I've tested both Skyrim Acceleration Layer (SKSE) and Sky Boost R3

Sky Boost = HOLY @#)$#*@!

I have a 2500k OCed to 4.4ghz. I found a heavily CPU bound area, which was as soon as you enter the Whiterun front gates and are staring at the building that's just to the left (which is across from your home). I disabled VSYNC both in INI and in the CP. I'm using a blend of Ultra settings with ugrids @ 7 and some shadow tweaks.

With no acceleration I was at 40 FPS
With SKSE AL I was at 40 FPS. (other area's though i've found this gives me a 5-6 FPS boost *VERIFIED*)
With Sky Boost R3 - 60 FPS. That's a 20 FPS gain. Whiterun was absolutely buttery smooth as I could possible want!
I also went to Riften and Markarth and the FPS was butter @ 60 FPS. I'm absolutely floored at how much more smooth this game is now.

I absolutely recommend Skyboost R3 over the SKSE Acceleration Layer mod. Plus with Sky Boost you don't need to run a separate executable.

This is good news indeed! Thanks for the feedback. I also suffer from less than stellar performance in White Run and other random locations so I will have to give this a try.

Sorry about the OP situation guys, I'm on holiday and only have my phone to browse from. I'm going to try to access a computer asap in order to overhaul it

Who else has compared AL to SB for themselves? I'm going to try it myself pretty soon.

thanks,^

though isn't there some kind of 'megapack' mod thing like the fallout ones, with everything included in one big thing?

I'm sure this will happen in time, but for now in order to get a complete deal, you have to piece together the efforts of many modders.

I had AL installed, but because of the reviews of SB uninstalled it without even one test and gave Skyboost a go. In my experience it DOES increase fps in these areas (for instance instead of 20 fps in Riften i got 30fps), but I have a feeling i'm experiencing what Tudz noticed... i get stutters here and there which i don't believe existed before. I think the cause of these is when the game shifts from high fps to low fps, then the low fps climbs as the mod kicks in (or something heh)... i clearly haven't done much testing and will compare with AL tonight as it is FINALLY friday and I will have more than an hour to mess with stuff.

Tudz i'm curious to see if you also experience the stuttering with Skyboost R3 vs TESV Acceleration layer

SkyBoost is a lot better. Been using it for a little while now and haven't noticed any of the stuttering or CTD that I got with TESVAL. I didn't have a lot of CTD issues with TESVAL, maybe once every few hours, but compared to vanilla where I had no CTD at all. Skyboost is running well so far, a lot smoother than both TESVAL and vanilla.

Without getting overly technical, what's the differences between the two?

TESVAL came from the SKSE folks and Sky Booster comes from the ENB author(s), correct?

I haven't followed it closely, but at a glance it seems TESVAL was made by one guy using the SK Script Extender, so using a custom .exe to load additional scripts. Then another guy came along and integrated the AL into an asiloader, which allows for loading custom libraries similar to how mods in GTAV are applied, and called it SkyBoost, and has since fixed some bugs and improved it.

TESVAL came from Arisu with some assistance from ianpatt (SKSE co-founder). SkyBoost is derived from TESVAL and comes from Alexander Blade, the guy who made Script Dragon. Nothing to do with ENB.

Ok.

I hope at some point maybe everyone could get together on this kind of project.

Sorry guys, I've only had access to the forum via phone these past 3 weeks (on vacation).

The OP will be overhauled tomorrow, I promise. The wait will be worth it.

Here are my Markarth results using TESV-AL and Skyboost. Very impressive improvement.

This SkyBoost R3 looks awesome, I'll have to give it a shot after New Year's.

When 1.3 was patched in, my game became highly unstable with any texture's added to \data\. Has that issue been cleared up yet, or does it have more to do with the stability of the texture itself? I want to put texture data back in but stability>great textures.

I have no crashes and I have many texture packs installed. I haven't played over an hour in a while though.

OP overhaul is underway. If you guys notice any broken links, please give me a heads up.

Overhaul complete. Hope this is satisfactory.

Again, please notify me if there are any broken/misdirected links. Also point out if I overlooked any particularly important mods. Now that the OP is formatted, adding new mods is pretty simple. :)

Hi. i edited my ini file with these values:

iShadowMapResolution=8192

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=32

fGrassStartFadeDistance=14000.0000

And outdooors it runs fine but when im indoors i take a dramatic framerat hit. i get like 5fps indoors. How comes?

i have a overclocked i7 920 do at 3.8 and my 480gtx clocked at 875mhz.

Something with the shadow modification that totally ruins FPS indoors, it's a known issue and I didn't bother to check if there was a resolution when I tried it a few days ago.

The Skyboost R3 mod is pretty incredible, I gained about 10-15 frames in busy cities. Have yet to crash.

Poorly optimized code.

Because there's a hell of a lot more shadows in a closer space indoors. Look how dark a lot of those interiors are especially if it's a place where there's a fire and a bunch of shadows all over the place.

8192 is law of diminishing returns on the shadows quite frankly. Not worth it at all.

Like anything else, you're asking for headaches when you take a game's settings past "default" ceiling levels and especially bitchy games like Bethesda games. It's just not worth it.

The game is hard on both CPU and GPU and arguably too hard on CPU. I bet at 8192 you're VRAM is seeing its limits exceeded with those settings. In your case, your CPU is a beast.

You're not going to be able to get it to work even though by all rights you should with that hardware.

I'd stick with 4096 at most. Shadows and AA are arguably the biggest performance hitters in this game.
