Skyrim Modding Megathread

Further evidence that SeriousHD makes distant textures rather soupy.

I'm not sure why the tree spaz'd out in the last picture there, it shouldn't have anything to do with the mod. I very much prefer the vanilla textures in most situations, except maybe when I'm looking down at a bedroll, looting a corpse, picking mushrooms, or anything that involves looking directly at the ground for a few seconds.

Both have bemefits and drawbacks.

those are a really bad example. Ive been using it for the past couple hours, and it looks great. The quality is vastly improved, and you really notice it.

it looks like you have zero anisitropy on, of course its soupy.

All I know is that SeriousHD looks pretty damn good when I am playing Skyrim. :)

What's a good example? Starring straight at the ground? I ran around Riverwood and Whiterun where foliage wasn't completely obscuring the floor.

And yes, I have 16xAF on. This is how serious HD looks with AF off: http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1606/serioushdnoaf.jpg

I saw these the other day and felt they were too good. What I mean by that is, they make the rest of the skin/armor/whatever look like shit by comparison, making it very apparent that the face has a different texture. It's distracting. I would be all about this if the rest of the body matched.

Yeah, I started using them and while they do look very nice, they don't really fit into the game world IMO. Not all of the females are going to have flawless skin and be totally made-up at all times. Doesn't really make sense.

I also agree about them looking too good compared to the rest of the body/armor.

I anticipated this counter argument, but every landscape texture pack I've come across has the same effect. I'll take a few of my own screenshots (and maybe video) using serious HD textures, even though I'm sure you're 100% set on using the mod regardless of my findings.

Well - see, that's the thing - your findings mean jack shit. I mean, not to be a dick, but I posted my own screens as well. Everything looks just fine in my shots, whether it's a close up or not. I'm not sure if you're done something to your shots to make them look how they do, or if something isn't right with your setup or mod combination, causing issues. I just don't know.

But what I DO know - and what others seem to know as well - is that the HD texture pack in question happens to look much better in OUR experience, when WE are playing it, compared to your screens. Your screenshots can look as terrible as you want them to. That means nothing to people who are obviously getting much better results than you. I just re-read my post and I really don't mean to sound like such an ass - but I don't know how else to put it. When looking at screenshots, they can look crappy compared to vanilla, but the in-play experience is just a much different story. As far as I'm concerned, the HD pack looks much better overall. Leagues better, in fact, whether close up or further out.

*shrugs*

Anyone get modded textures occasionally bug out? I'll have certain textures turn pure white, pure light purple or pure black, usually on people's clothes. Doesn't happen all the time, and sometimes exiting to main menu reset it. Seems to happen more the higher the res.

Welllllllllllllll...
Can you do us a favor and take a comparison shot? Doesn't have to be anything fancy like what Spartan did.

I've done zero doctoring. There's no reason to. I gain nothing either way, even if it's to prove a meaningless point. I want these mods to look and work great especially since I'm a mod author too. (edit) I'm using the default shader settings as well. No fxaa injector or enbseries.

That's what matters right? If you're happy with them, that's great. I was just pointing out that they could use more negative space to spread out the clutter and complement the geometry.

Happens to me infrequently with increasing occurrence the longer I play. Maybe try using the 4GB mod. Relaunching the game has always worked for me.

I'm with SPARTAN VI on this one, the HD textures look like crap from any distance except point blank. I agree that negative space is an issue, but so is contrast. Looking at them from a distance takes me back to the 90's-era of gaming. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the resolution one is playing at. However, I do think the in-game textures look great in most cases, with the exception of a few stand-out oddities (random tables, book cases, metal pieces, etc.). That's not saying they couldn't be higher resolution, but they're better than what's been produced by the modding community. To be honest, I haven't seen a single graphics-oriented mod that actually improves the game over vanilla besides the iron/steel swords one posted awhile back. Hopefully that guy does all the weapons.

Look into the 4Gb Skyrim tweak (I think this is coming out officially in the next patch). I had the same problem on occasion until I used this.

Just to name one of many, what about Vurt's Flora mod?

Thanks guys, was trying to stay away from the 4GB for fear of losing stability in another aspect of the game.. but sounds like it makes no negative difference. Is there some AMD or other mods compatibility program I should use with this?

Something about all of these FXAA injection mods and the like crashes my launcher every time I install them. Haven't been able to use a single one.

You're not alone, I have the same problem on both mine and my wife's gaming PCs.

Amazing update to an amazing mod, the new SKYRIM HD texture update is out and updates virtually everything. The new landscapes are amazing, a big step up from Serious HD's textures (although I appreciated the effort) and the mountains look much better than the original Skyrim HD mountains. Water and Sky have been re-textured, I overwrote my Realistic Water textures and Enhanced Night sky textures, good improvement and doesn't alter the originals in any significant way except to improve the texture quality. Particles have also been improved so be on the lookout for that as you run around. I chose not to overwrite the Chris's Whiterun texture pack or my Bar/Wood files as I had already updated those to my liking. Snow is much improved in the update and texture blending/space is improved all around. My system is now using upwards of 3.4/8sysram 1.4/2vram but I haven't tested it extensively. Amazingly, my performance hasn't suffered at all and almost seems to have improved. I loved the Windhelm update by this modder a couple weeks back so I had high hopes for this one, but it really exceeded my expectations. Pictures are available for the update in the pictures/screens section of the main page.

And the mod's amazing. Here's two quick comparison shots I made inside Dragonreach. You can not only see how much better the textures are, but also the depth. Like the rugs, even the rock behind the Jarl's throne stands out. None of the textures blur in the distance either, check out the landscape shot. Wow, absolutely amazing work.

Also note I'm currently using ~1700MB on my 6950 while playing with it. Hot damn

Need more comparison shots.
I'm only seeing one on that page...

You have to click on the "images" tab, lot of them don't even do the mod justice, looks stellar in-game. Again, think Whiterun looks better with Chris's Whiterun pack, but that's the only exception IMO.

They're useless because one half of the image is default, and the other half is the mod.
In order to judge them they both need to be screenshots of the exact same thing, the only one that works is the Dragonsreach picture because the wood/carpet textures are consistent on both sides.

It reminds me of that lighting effects mod that put the sunrise/sunset on the mod side in every picture to show it off, when the default is on the other side with no sun. So how can you judge it?

Ridiculous.
Most mods are 90% placebo effect.

Download the mod and try it out, it's a simple texture mod, back up your texture folder and replace it if you don't like it. Simple. Confused about the placebo thing, my enhanced night, realistic water, ssao hack/mod (depending on which you use), distant lod mod and texture mods all had an immediate noticeable impact on visual quality, indisputable to the naked eye. Granted there are a lot of useless mods, but those are easy to identify 90% of the time LoL, don't even need to download those.

That texture overhaul looks nice, but I get a TON of stutter now. Gonna have to kick down AA I guess, I dunno. It actually does seem smoother in terms of overall framerate, but I get stuttering pretty often.

To those who get the stuck at loading screen saves, try loading up a working save then load up the save you actually want to load. This has worked every time for me. I'm not sure why the game has trouble loading up some saves directly from the main menu.

I agree that most mods are placebo (or worse), and that's why you should test for yourself. The Skyrim HD texture pack is awesome though.

Welcome to your vRAM limit. Turn off AA, load fewer cells, etc. to reduce vRAM usage.

Wow, I really have to tip my hat to these modders. This is a lot of impressive work pre Creation Kit and only a month since the game streeted.

Let me ask you something:

I've been charting an issue for myself where it SEEMS that if I fast travel a bit (key ingredient) and some time goes by I can from having great performance to seeing some fairly obvious performance loss. It becomes most evident outdoors. Indoors it doesn't seem to ever show up.

Anyone feel free to take a shot at that. I'll experiment by lowering AA and even shadows if I have to although I would think a GTX 480 SC from EVGA should be able to handle this thing tricked out at 1920x1200. CPU is a Intel qx9650 with a mild OC on it and 8 gigs of PC8500.
