not without some effort. I've got today off. I'll see what I can do for you.

i got mine today. i have a radeon 9700 pro. i didnt remove the shim and i plugged the power right into the ati card.

temps, overclock?

I got mine Arctic Silencer rev.2 and installed it over the Zalman HP-80C that I had. Seems to work better than Zalman, I never liked the idea of having passive cooling on a video card. No problems with the silencer whatsoever, the installation was easy. I didn't know that so many people are having problems with this, I prolly would've thought twice before I got this cooler if I had seen this thread. I didn't try overclocking it yet, but it should help me get few extra mhz. The overclock that you see in my sig was done with stock cooling.

It's perfectly stable with 425mhz on the core while playing all the games though. I'll have to try and push it a little more.

Rev.3 needs the shit lapped outa it. Don't try and tell me artic silver will make up those kind of gaps. And it needs a better fan, like a squarrel cage. Check your OEM heatsink, if the area that came in contact with the die of the video card was raised up you might wanna remove the shim. And use a good screw driver that fits the screws, you don't wanna apply to much pressure to keep the screw driver from slipping, and end up slicing across the back of your video card.

Oh I ended up with lower core/mem speeds after installtion. =/
Don't say I installed it incorrectly either.

[H]ardOCP's should review this VGA cooler.

just a question
if the core is lower why would the heatsink make contact at all? even if it bends the card a bit it would still be a bad contact point if it was due to a bend. I had to remove my shim to get even the stock heatsink back on, but I put on an IceBerq 4 pro

If you have touched or ran your nail across the heatsink you would notice a zipping sound, Please tell me what OEM heatsink does that. the oem heatsink on my Canopus Spectra has a better surface.

I will be lapping my VGA silencer over the next two days, I'll take pics.

I just installed my VGA silencer. Strangely enough the core was at the same level as the top of the shim, so I didn't have to remove it. I personally got 15 more mHz out of the core.

Sadly originally I could only get it to 393 or so with stock cooling, but now I have it up to 408 when doing my gaming thing with no artifacts. Installing it was a breeze, tho I scared myself a few times. The tube of thermal paste wouldn't go and then all of a sudden it squirted all over the core and the surrounding resistors. I cleaned it off with acetone and all is good.

All Thermalrights have the grooves in the base... that's just how the milling machine does it's job. It's still a smooth finish. If you want to lap your Silencer, all the power to you, but I don't think it's needed.

Anyone knows what heatsinks would fit on 9800pro's memory under the VGA Silencer? Are there any? Or should I use them only on the back of the card?

I need some cheap ones.

at least read the post before you ask a question. yes most will fit, dont know any that dont (non home made anyway).

Read the post? What post? You mean this 12 page thread?

Sorry, next time I'll just create a new thread and ask there  But thanks anyways.

I just got done "lapping" mine. Didn't really do a good job just did a 350 grit then a 400 grit, and finished it off with some rubbing compound. Took the zipping out of it and now I get a stable 419.50/355 =/ I also took a little video of the "zipping" with my 707. I just have to find a host, and post it.

Good luck everyone.

If you want, I can host them. Send the pic to me at sycorax @ comcast . net

I just got done reading through this huge thread and was curious if anyone had put a VGA silencer on an 9800pro 256MB card. I know they are for 9800pro's but this one is more like an XT, which is not supported. What do you guys think?

this thread sux, plz dont resurrect it

Dont do it man....run-away from the Artic Cooling monsters.....dont go into the light Carolann....!

Hey, I've been following this thread for a while... with all the troubles people had, like their cards being borked after the installation. So I decided to get one for my 9700NP, to see if all these claims were true. My stock cooler (the circular heatsink on Sapphire cards) didn't have much surface area, and the thermal compound only covered about 2/3 of the core, which explains some occasional artifacting I got at 325/310.

Got the Silencer home, took it out, and examined it. The base finish is decent... though there are milling marks left over. Nothing some good thermal compound will fix. So I removed the stock cooler, cleaned the core off, put on some Ceramique, and tightened the screws. The screws were tightened up to the rubber washers, and no more. The Silencer adds quite a bit of weight to the card, but it feels like a quality unit when the Silencer is installed. Fired it up, and I've been smooth sailing ever since.

I really don't see how one can bork their cards with this product... installation was relatively easy (easier than a Zalman ZM80C-HP), and the final result is real nice. I even went a step further by removing the shim (the core was lower than the shim), and had no problems. This is a good product.

I'm still going to plug the fan into my Vantec Nexus controller splicing wires just to be safe. I'll be doing this just after this weekend. I'll report back with results if I can find this thread, hehe.

OK, I have to admit I dont have one, but I seriously cant see how one can screw up the installation. I read the whole thread and everyone who has had success has emphaiszed "DONT OVERTIGHTEN" while Highlife has been crying "dont do it" while making no effort to try to find out what happened. highlife: look at the core. is it damaged in anyway? let us know. if it is thats USER ERROR since other people have done it fine.

everyone who has a dead card: what model card were you using? Has anyone killed a powercolor card, specifically a powercolor 9800SE 256-bit? thats what I have and it really REALLY needs cooling, I get artifacts at default speeds because theres terrible cooling around my vga card.

I think it is safe to say that the VGA silencer does not kill video cards unless the user DOES NOT follow instructions. In addition to over-tightening the screws, the user can easily damage a card by NOT following Anti-Static measures or spilling cleaning solvents on the PCB (Acetone). I have 2 VGA silencers for both my 9800PRO and 9800NP, I have not removed the shims on both cards, I have not over applied AS5, I have not lapped the bottom of the vga silencer, I have not over-tighten the screws and my cards ARE NOT dead. Both cards are running the exact same speeds (430/371) in fact my PRO can even do 450 core without artifacts. It is the best damn aftermarket cooler I've seen so far, so much better than that Zalman crap that claims to be completely silent but "suggest" you to buy the secondary fan if you want to use it. The install is SO MUCH easier on the Video Silencer compared with the install on the Zalman, two screws and you're done. Bottom line, use good judgement when installing the cooler, if you can't even take the necessary precautions and follow all instructions then you should not even mess with computer hardware at all. Go buy a dell and stay hassel free.

ROFL. All this over a VGA silencer? The heatsink on my 9800pro was a little awkward to get off but I didnt back down. You know what I did? I took a screwdriver, wedged it between the shim and the heatsink and gave it a good yank till the bugger came flying off.

Its not gonna be epoxy holding the heatsink on (hopefully) so whats the big worry? The whole process took me about 20 minutes and even with the shim still on I got an extra 30mhz out of the 9800pro. Now flashed to XT and running like a dream.

Gotta love this.
I think the problem lies in how the HS hangs on the gpu. I could see one side being squeezed tighter than the other. I could be wrong.
My Zally is quite comfortable thankyou.

What does this mean to lap the bottom?
My Silencer's original surface. Lots of milling grooves.

While I'm posting pics...

I was glad the shim did not have to be removed and void the warranty.

I was able to put one of my aerogate temp sensors under the clamp. Worked out pretty slick.

I also spliced the fan into a PSU power molex.
With my case fans set at 7v, I cannot hear the cooler at all.
Case, CPU, and GPU temps were lowered with this $9.99 cooler. Great product!

All work done by my good friend Delbert.

hey PacknHeat... how did you go about lapping the silencer? i mean did you use a sanding block, or glass or free hand, or what? nice work by the way.

PacknHeat, is that the shiny tape that's used to wrap around air conditioning pipes that you used to close off that 7mm gap? If so, how is that working? I may try this with mine to close off the gap.

Thank you. :)

The silencer was lapped wet on a piece of glass using what is known as micromesh. It is a series of progressively finer and finer abrasive sand paper. It goes all the way down to 12000 grit. That is very very fine. We use the micromesh kits to remove scratches and polish acrylic windows on aircraft.

The tape is also used on aircrafts. We call it speed tape.
It's doing just fine.

Again, every temp probe in my case and BIOS temps were lowered with this cooler.
