scared VGA silencer

I'll post pics of my Hercules 9800 Pro - dead or alive - after the VGA Silencer installation.

If it isn't working it could be something as simple as not pushing it far enough into the slot or not plugging the fan in, there's problems when people see a problem as more than it really is :p
 
If you will not hear from me by Monday, since I will try to install it tomorrow, then something went wrong cause I will not have a Video card to substitute!

VGA Silencer installation was a succes !!!

Overall imrovement in core was about 15 mhz - currently running at 445 Mhz core and 370 memory.

Memory was not improved of course.

I've removed the heat sink. The stock heat sink for the Hercules 9800 Pro is actually pretty good. It's made of copper and has a very shiny surface - no lapping involved. The white stuff is AS ceramiqe. I did not remove the shim !!

I've successfully installed the VGA silencer. Don't tigten the screws on the rear retainer or you'll break something !! Notice that there's a little gap between the face plate and the air outlet:

My conclusion:

B+ rating.

I wouldd've given it an A but the face plate did not fit too well with my case. The hole where the screw goes into the case seems to be not drilled accurately and the outlets in the rear are not centered correctly - this might be corrected by drilling another hole where it should be - that's for the future though :)

My video card lives !!!!! :p :D

i wouldnt be surprised LordBritish if you memory oc went up since your saying the silencer is a better cooler the temp of the card should have gone down yielding a better oc for the ram. in theory anyway, never guaranteed. im assuming you did try and increase your memory oc?

edit: nevermind about that last question. good review, just wish you would have tested with the stock cooler aswell.

oh man, how much are you supposed to tighten the rear retainer? i tightened it as much as i could. could that be why my card fried?
 
Just tight enough until you can see that the bendable metal strip is touching the black rubber washer.

If you remove the shim, it can squash the GPU !!

Luckily my shim is level with the GPU - or close enough.
 
Another thing I would advise is to simply remove the double wide slot cover included with the VGA Silencer - it's garbage and does not fit well as I mentioned previously.

Simply remove the speed toggle switch and tape it to the VGA Silencer somewhere where it wont get in the way - set it to high of course.

Use the stock slot cover that came with the video card and remove the slot cover adjacent to the video card slot.

The opening is wider and allows more air to flow - sounds like car modding :)

That fixes my major gripe with the VGA Silencer - now it gets an A !!

Actually my northbridge cooler is a passive Zalman cooler - you can see it in the picture I posted previously - it's stuck on with AS adhesive so it's not coming off anytime soon !!

I'm saving the old video card heat sink since eventually I'll eBay my Hercules 9800 Pro - this upgrade madness never ends !
 
Hey dave, just wondering but you said that your 9800 didn't have a shim and you tightened the screws as far as possible? This may have led to your now deceased card (RIP). I installed my vga silencer on my 9700 (on 9800 pcb) without a prob, didn't remove the shim and I only tightened the screws down enough so that the silencer was firmly attached and not as far as possible. BTW, sorry to hear your card died :( Another reason is maybe the thermal compound but that seems unlikely, but not impossible of course.
 
You didnt mention the shim Dave.....

Sounds like you got a refurb not a new unit... they ALL come with the shim, the Taiwan fab ships the GPU's with the shim installed to all OEMs.

Somebody removed it before it got to you... feel free to RMA, I think they stuck you with a lemon.

ALWAYS test a card thoroughly BEFORE you do any mods. I usually wait 30 days using it stock. 2 NF7-S's and 2 9700pro's times are UP, they be getting [Mod'd] this week. Warming up the artic epoxy as we speak. Mosfet and ddr heatsinks a comin.

BTW, testing your shim... use a straight edge, and a flash light. place the edge (ccard,etc) over the shim/GPU and shine the flashlight behind it. Any large amount of light squeezing under the edge means the shim is too high and needs to be plucked.

Only tighten the VGASil until the metal strap touches the rubber stopper on both ends.

Also... they VGA Silencers REALLY need to be lapped. The machine grooves n the GPU surface are too course for my liking....Breakout the 1000 grit people.
 
oh no, lets hope and pray The Saint's card isnt toast =(

we shall give him till at least the end of monday...say 8pm eastern before we claim that yet another VGASilencer has claimed the life of a 9800 =/

and for the sake of my eyes and the 'Lord of Airflow' clean up those wires PLEASE?! wouldja do that for me PLEASE LordBritish? ;)

I removed the heatsink from the card but the Heatsink its glued over the core. I didn`t want to stress it too much and I didn`t have a blower to bring the temps to 60C so I leaved it like that.

at least your card is still alive. id take the stock hsf off when its room temp or less since when the "glue" is heated most of it stays on the card. if its room temp or lower i notice most if not all of the "glue" comes off together.
 
While I respect your decision, I will continue to apply pressure!
Why not run a graphic intensive loop and get that puppy nice and hot and then gently twist? Go on you know you want too ;) Just be gentile:D You'll see we'll respect you in the morning:eek:

or do what I did and stick that sucker in the freezer overnight (make sure to keep it in a bag + cover it in paper towels to keep the condensation off) and pry it off with gentle pressure from a butter knife.

Do not do the freezer *trick*, you'll kill your video card 4 sure !!!!

If you manage to install the VGA Silencer w/o killing your video card, you'll join the ranks of the 1337 !!

OK quit scaring me...hehe i bought Davis's VGA Silencer from him to put on my 9700 AIW aka my little hot plate =)

Im going to leave the shim on of course =)

I think you crushed your core Davis...sorry to hear about the death of a such a nice card.

Hmm, it's not that hard. I just installed one on my 9800 Pro a few minutes ago and it's working fine. It's the first time I've ever messed with video card cooling. Just follow the directions and keep a steady hand, it's easy. Good luck.
 
You think the silencer is bad, I just swapped my VGA silencer for this. The VGA Silencer wont go onto a 9600pro but this one will... that seems a little odd to me that Arctic Cooling wouldnt make their Silencer a little more "universal" like this one is.
 
Im going to leave the shim on mine...has anyone done it this way and working ok?


If i remove the shim and i have to RMA this card again, then they might not take it back due to that.
