No, it's not required. DX Compute is software, much like OpenCL. There may be some limitations with non-DX11 hardware, but nothing is really known yet.
yes I know it's software, like open CL and DX

yes I know it's software, like open CL and DXbut there is still a requirement on what hardware it can utilize
Raging fanboys like Silus are always fun to watch.![]()
Your comparing new tech vs old tech and two gpu's vs one gpu.
DX11, not very important now but will be
lower power consumption, over 200 less watts
Better performance than 4870x2 and equal to GTX 295, and will OC better
4870x2 $500-550 MSRP @ Launch
GTX 295 $500 currently
5800 $399 MSRP @ Launch
Also the 5800 will drop in price 1-2 months after launch.
Second, if GT300 costs $650 or $700 it will be because it's faster than the card it's competing with. If it's not faster, then it will cost less or the same. Same thing for the X2.
what i love is how guys running 1680x1050 will run out and buy the newest hottest cards...
then upgrade to sli or xfire
then argue and fanboy and go on and on...
and they're running friggin 1680x1050
i mean i get the upgrade bug too from time to time... but stop dropping 426 max wedge motors into your moms rusted out pinto
and at least step up to 1080p
so we have new stock from amd. and coming soon from team green / what games make use of new hardware?
no, crysis doesnt count![]()
No the sound of silence is from the awesome Nvidia demo today of their next gen card . Oh wait. ...(Maybe it was a renaming event)
If prices are too high just wait till Nvidia release, you can bet ATI is gonna drop the MSRP.
Hahaha, I laughed. Honestly.
Despite whatever RV870 is priced at initially, it doesn't really matter does it? Anyone who knows anything knows that GPUs are the most depreciated part in a computer. If the upgrade isn't worth it for you, wait the 6-12 months until the next hot thing comes out or the competitor renames the 8800\comes out with something to challenge the price point of the product.
We've just won the game, folks.
LOL, I remember that one and you were the one jumping on the 800 SPs rumor without questions, even though there were more rumors about 480 SPs. It should be easy enough to find those posts of yours! Sure it turned out to be true, but rumors are rumors until NDAs are lifted ? Obviously you know nothing of the sort...You also missed the part "if true" of my post regarding the "rumor"...
Oddly enough, you have the exact opposite knack of supporting ATI and doubting NVIDIA. Isn't that a shocker
And you still think this will be a new "architecture" of some sort ? For an ATI fan you should know it's not by now...
Man why cant the prices be 199 and 299 like the last gen? im sad im poor.

So $399.99?/shrug it says < $400
use some common sense. this is their next gen card so of course its going to be much much faster. that doesnt mean it gets a $100-150 price increase though especially since this is ONLY HALF of what their flagship 5870x2 will be. also thats not the way computer tech usually works. if it did then we would already be paying $5000 for 2tb hard drives, i7 and current video cards. the only time prices are high is on the very top end when there is no direct competition. the card is NOT meant to compete with with gtx200 cards so that is only a short term comparison. the main reason the 5870 will likely be $399 at release is because ATI could not keep up with demand if it was priced at $299 with 40nm still having some issues.Everybody is bitching about $400 for a 40nm card that is rumored to outpace a $460 GTX 295 AND use far less energy doing it?? Wow, way to do 2 minutes of price comparison on newegg, guys.
Yes, you would be paying a bit of a premium seemingly JUST for DX11 functionality and some energy savings when comparing bang vs buck to something like crossfired 4870. BUT how much is that going to reflect on the energy bill, and how much e-peen will you be losing if you ONLY have a DX10/10.1 card?

did you read my quote? Nvidia obviously thought they had no competition with the gtx280 when released. also the 8800gtx was pretty pricey itself when released but again because of no direct competition. maybe ATI is hoping Nvidia has nothing to compete with at least for a month or two.check out what nVidia did, 600 bucks?![]()

all the 40nm issues arent solved.40nm issues are already solved.
plus, why would ATI worry about the supply and demand when they trying to makes money?
its a easy question, they can definitely earn more cash by having lower price..
but come back and think about it, the current generation's ATI card would be in stock forever if 5870 with such a beast performance on 299 price tag. They will only ruin themselves up by lowering down the price.
and why would nVidia thought they have no competition when they first release GTX 280? they are a huge company, they can easily get the information about other company's product, especially during the benchmark stage. they should know better than others on what they are dealing with. It is business we are talking about here... not that simple or easy thought can define their strategy.
an i7 with a 7800gt? what exactly have you been waiting on when it comes to a better card?I was really hoping for lesser, but they'll come down once Nvidia has new gen to compete with.
I'm ordering myself a 4850 512mb till then. Not a lot invested and not a lot lost when I sell it off. I'm only running a 20" Dell 4:3 anyway, so not like the 58xx would be groundbreaking. I was interested more in DX11 support than anything.
all the 40nm issues arent solved.
of course Nvidia didnt think they had competition when the gtx280 came out. as soon as they realized they did their prices plummeted and many companies even gave back money to customers that paid so much at release. did you seriously forget about all that???
because they just announced a couple weeks ago that 40nm had gotten a little better. it was horrible so a little better or even just better still means that 40nm issues are not 100% solved. common sense would tell you that will have impact on pricing at least in the short term. why would they release the card for $299 when demand will surely be greater than supply? 5870 at $399 is likely to be very short term and those that care about value will wait a few weeks for things to settle down.how you know all 40nm aren't solved ?
and yes, I do know about that incident, but you have to realize something...
They are business there, they should know what they are doing, they should know more than any of us here, they know what they are dealing with..
All I have to say, we have no idea what their marketing strategy is going, they ain't that stupid, its not a simple fact that can solve the puzzle.
they are business there, its not that simple as you think.

I know what the price of the 4870x2 was which was $549 at launch and the 5870 512mb actually dropped from its $299 not long after. I didnt say the 5870 would be exactly twice the price of the 5870. it likely would be over $699 though if the 5870 is $399. they will probably sell all the 5870s they can at $399 and then lower the price a few weeks later when the 5870x2 comes out.as it was already proven, the 4870x2 @ launch was not 2x the price of a 4870, infact it was cheaper plus, it was 2gb card vs the 512m 4870 xfire which costed more @ launch.
