RV870 prices

The yield rates for 40nm probably aren't as great as AMD would like, hence the more expensive price. I would imagine when they get a new revision and get better yield rates, that's when we'll see the prices come down more (assuming that's before Nvidia's parts come out).

Prices will come down in the coming months. Even then, the $400 isn't wholly unreasonable for the potential power and features this card might offer.

IF you are a new flight simmer who wants that 3 display experience then yes it is VERY much worth 400

However the majority of folks do not even have 1080 displays there is no need to spend that much in my opinion. And they wont sell. After the usual frenzy people will look at that and say "WTF?" Look at the 5850s prices and think "Why not 5870 for that?"

In the end? I figure many will settle for 2 4770s

They will come out at 400, people will buy them, there won't be enough supply just like with the 4870, AMD will make what they want from the 400 dollar sales, by Christmas/January we will probably see 50 dollar mail in rebates/ instant savings, they should be down to 329 to 319 going in to the first quarter of 2010.

Traditionally thats how its always been.

Triple monitors will exist on every 5xxx card, not just the 5870 so your logic doesn't even make sense. People will buy the 5870 for the performance!

I really, REALLY want a new Radeon 5xxx, but I can't justify spending that much money on a video card when all I really play is WoW... Even Fear 2 runs like a dream on my 4850.

No the sound of silence is from the awesome Nvidia demo today of their next gen card . Oh wait. ...(Maybe it was a renaming event)
If prices are too high just wait till Nvidia release, you can bet ATI is gonna drop the MSRP.

What "event"?

$650 for a top end card (pending performance and features) sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

At leas the triple display thing gives a reason for the power. I think everyone's already played through Crysis and I don't know how many people would be willing to buy a new card just so they can finally max it out with 4xAA at 1920x1200. There aren't really any other games that will make even a 4800 series break a sweat.

3 30" displays will really use that 2GB of ram. I wonder if evergreen will come out in a 4GB flavor. That'd be a crap load of video ram.
