For what it's worth... ;)

"We finally figured out out the final specification of the chip that we called RV870 and the fact that AMD plans to call it Radeon HD 5870 doesn’t come as a big surprise. The chip works at 825MHz and has 1600 shaders, two times more than RV770 which indicates that the chip is two times faster than the year old RV770.

The chip has as mmany as 2.1 billion transistors and is more than twice the number the RV770 packs, which has 956 million transistors. The card uses GDDR5 memory clocked at 1.3GHz (5.2GHz in quad mode) and can provide more than 150GB/second bandwidth. The power of this card stays at 180W while in idle the power drops down to 27W, three times less than the 90W on 4870.

By a rough specification-based estimate, the Radeon HD 5870 could end up two times faster than the Radeon HD 4870 but realistically, you should expect the new card to be faster by about 60 percent across the board."

5870 2Gb $449

5870 1Gb $399

5850 1Gb $299

For sale Sept 23rd, and Faud also mentions that the 5870X2 is due out a month after that, no word on pricing yet.....

Can't wait for hard numbers. Everything always looks good on paper.

HAHA it's funny to see the prices. Now all of a sudden (for "some " people), those are great prices :)

And my predictions for number of transistors were spot on, if this is true of course. The chip size and number of ALUs is also withing the realm of past speculation. Pretty much a tweaked RV770 with double "everything", with nothing new to the table, except DX11.

And native support for 3 displays per card. Why not wait for the release before we jump to conclusions again?

You sure have a knack for jumping to the support of Nvidia / doubting ATI at every turn. Remember the 480SP vs. 800SP argument? Yeah, that one...

If those are correct it looks like they ditched the pricing strategy of the 48xx series.

Can't blame them though, AMD needs to make a profit for a change.

^

Yeah, its just that we got very lucky in the last round, and its easy to get used to it and expect future prices to be the same, but it's not something that can always last. AMD needs to make some profits now, and can always and probably will lower prices when Nvidia releases their cards. AMD does have a headstart here, I wonder if we hear from Nvidia soon about their upcoming product.

IMHO, prices are reasonably good, I only hope there will be enough supply.

$50 bump for double the memory doesn't sound all that bad. Although I have no practical use for it, as I only have a 22" 16x10 monitor. :(

LOL, I remember that one and you were the one jumping on the 800 SPs rumor without questions, even though there were more rumors about 480 SPs. It should be easy enough to find those posts of yours! Sure it turned out to be true, but rumors are rumors until NDAs are lifted ? Obviously you know nothing of the sort...You also missed the part "if true" of my post regarding the "rumor"...

Oddly enough, you have the exact opposite knack of supporting ATI and doubting NVIDIA. Isn't that a shocker :)

And you still think this will be a new "architecture" of some sort ? For an ATI fan you should know it's not by now...

trolling ehh ? depends on performance if it is faster or equal to gtx 295 its nice price since its single gpu and doesn't have multi gpu problems plus if u think that your beloved nvidia came with 650 premium price thats not bad at all right ?

Uhh, I must've hit a nerve with the prices comment...

Obviously it depends on the performance, but we don't know it yet do we ? Yet, these prices are being considered "normal" now, when in the past, they were considered expensive...for the second best card of the line up.

And no, $650 was never a good price, but guess what, at these prices the HD 5870 X2 won't cost less than $650. I'm sure you'll say it's a great price nonetheless :)

everything will depend on performance i never said that 399 is great but its not bad at all its first graphic card and there is no competition since nvidia lunched with 650 dolar price i think amd has all rights to enter with 399

650 was for the top card. The second best was 400. Same thing here.

Of course they have the right. It's their product, they price it at whatever they want. But it was the same thing NVIDIA did, yet it was wrong then...And if NVIDIA only releases their parts at the end of October, which is the rumor, the prices won't decrease for over a month.

Well its atis current top card lol you think too complicated lets say if i take your methods that will make gtx 280 nvidias third fastest ( since there were gtx 295 and gtx 285 which were faster than gtx 280) You can't compare anything to unrelleased card may be ati won't make 5870x2 if its performance matchs gtx 295 or if its faster that makes it roughly two times faster than gtx 275. Thing have changed since 2000 and 3000 series ati isn't that behind from nvidia anymore so they doen't need dual gpu anymore to compete with nvidia high end

Well, a X2 card is on its way though. I read an article that AMD is polishing the drivers for it so it will be optimized when the card is released. Its already known that the X2 will come so we can already say that the HD 5870 isn't the top card. Price for an X2 could perhaps reach 599 or higher.

Its reasonable to assume that the newest Nvidia card will be faster than the HD 5870. AMD will need this X2 card to fill the top of their line-up.

For $400 they can keep it. No way it hell am I paying that much for a single GPU. The 5870 and its X2 varient are likely the only single card solutions on AMDs side that have a chance to providing a decent boost over my 2 9800GTXs, well soon to be 2x GTX 260s or 275s since my brother is buying the 9800s from me. No doubt that the cards will be good, but that price on a single card solution is simply too high for me. Though they're bound to drop drastically by this time next year.

$399 for a 5870 is just going to make many people including myself wait to see what Nvidia has. I really think the pricing is more to do with the amount of cards that they will have during first few weeks. if they priced it at $299 they likely couldnt come close to keeping up with demand. IMO price will drop and rebates will be available very soon after people with little concern for value buy the first batches.

Well of course they have some plans if nvidia will release superior card or even dual card at lunch of there new series but i also don't think with current way of managing dual gpu both companies are dying to make dual gpu. Dual gpus have there problems which are major imho unless ther is proper cf or sli profile there is always a chance for dual gpu to act like single gpu or even worse performance is mostly not two times faster but like 60 percent or 80 percent faster with microstuttering or something like that. So i will always take single gpu which roughly give gtx 295 performance even its a bit high priced and thats what most people thing at least for now

also if the next gen are anywhere near twice as fast then anybody without an overclocked i5 or i7 will be noticeably cpu bottlenecked with a 5870x2.

of coarse the same goes for whatever Nvidia has planned to compete with it.

My first impression was "I think it's a shame these cards aren't all $50 cheaper. I think that would have a big impact on how many people are willing to buy. I can completely understand the prices being more than the 48xx launch prices but $100 more is just a bit too much."

But then I read cannondale06's post.

I really think the pricing is more to do with the amount of cards that they will have during first few weeks. if they priced it at $299 they likely couldnt come close to keeping up with demand. I think that's pretty much spot on. They won't have enough stock initially, they're going to sell out in the short term, so a lower price won't help sales but will help profits.

Oh and in response to this,
also if the next gen are anywhere near twice as fast then anybody without an overclocked i5 or i7 will be noticeably cpu bottlenecked with a 5870x2.
I say "And about time too!" :D

I'll be getting the 5870 1gb when it hits the 220$ mark, as current 4870s have.

Nothing worth upgrading for right now.

Again, if this price "rumor" is true, $399 for a card that preforms just as good as a gtx295, which costs what? $550? what would you pick? wait, don't answer that, I think I already know...

650 was for the top card. The second best was 400. Same thing here.

/facepalm you say don't believe rumors as they are never correct, but you throw up rumors to back up your own opinion? Really now...

I want to see how the triple monitor feature pans out. If that works as well as a TH2GO then I will be getting the 5870 even at 399 (or 449 for 2gb if the extra memory helps a lot on triple monitor). It would be a bargain considering the TH2GO is 200$ by itself.

Whatever the price of GT300 - $50 will be the price for the Radeon HD 5870 X2. So are you saying the GT300 will be $700 ?

Totally agree :) The Digital TH2G is like $299 on newegg. So I am willing to get the 5870 2gb if the extra memort actually helps ?

So many times in the past the cards with extra memory compared to the standard version show very little improvement, sometimes even buggy. Look at the 4890 with 2gb memory, and GTX-285 with 2gb, I have read all the newegg reviews of those cards and tons of little issues with them, it is not worth it. Actually I think better to save up for a 2nd 5870 1gb and Crossfire those babies.

I think my X48 chipset Asus Rampage motherboard in sig should handle these two in Crossfire at full 16x power ?

Prices will go down as time goes on, given Nvidia's competition with their new GPU. Let's hope for some more one-upmanship and price wars that happened in the GTX2xx/HD4xxx series. :)

Whatever the price of GT300 - $50 will be the price for the Radeon HD 5870 X2. So are you saying the GT300 will be $700 ?

Way to confuse yourself with your own comment...

First of all, The HD 5870 X2 won't be priced according to the price of a GT300 based card, if it comes out first than that GT300 based card. That should be obvious ?
Second, if GT300 costs $650 or $700 it will be because it's faster than the card it's competing with. If it's not faster, then it will cost less or the same. Same thing for the X2.

So, it will cost more than the 4870x2, or 2 4890s in CF, and be slower, Wow. "I cant believe my eyes"

Your comparing new tech vs old tech and two gpu's vs one gpu.

DX11, not very important now but will be
lower power consumption, over 200 less watts
Better performance than 4870x2 and equal to GTX 295, and will OC better

4870x2 $500-550 MSRP @ Launch
GTX 295 $500 currently
5800 $399 MSRP @ Launch

Also the 5800 will drop in price 1-2 months after launch.

:D This is how you know AMD/ATI is about to release a new card. The trolls come out to try to piss on the parade.

is DX11 required for DX compute? or will DX10 work for that?

if it's required then DX11 will obviously be huge, as it will out all of the crazy priced Quadro / FireGL cards

Right now 3.4ghz...but I am willing to go back to stock no problem to run 2 5870's in Crossfire if that would help ?

Nono, you want to keep it clocked so it can handle what a pair of 5870s are throwing at it.

What was the point here ? If you look back, you'll see my reaction to to non-impressive performance of the 9800 GTX, which I always thought would at least increase the number of Stream Processors.

Yet the rumor of its performance being up to GTX 295 levels, which justifies the price, is good enough ? Really ?

LOL, you're hilarious...Again using the "assumption" (it's not even a rumor), that it will perform "just as good" as a GTX 295...

Where did I say I didn't believe rumors again ?
Also, do you understand the conditional "if" ? I clearly see an "if" in that portion of the quote. When you see an "if", you see an assertion of fact or something ?

But this reaction is not unexpected. The fanboys attack to protect their brand :)

No, it's not required. DX Compute is software, much like OpenCL. There may be some limitations with non-DX11 hardware, but nothing is really known yet.
