Project: Plutonium 3

How are you planning on mounting that case? Are you just going to get a shelf for the rack and lay the case on it? The rails for those cases are four post rails and you also wont be able to mount the case off the bezel. You MIGHT be able to make or buy a 2 post rail kit.

This is temporary until I get my own house, (hopefully next year), so I will anchor the rack very well and put a piece of PVC 3" pipe under the rack of the file server and it can help support the other gear on top of it....

No, one of the guys on AVS or [h] (don't remember which) called up Norco and they said that they are working on a manual, he basically said that to cheap costs down, that used a backplane from an existing setup, hence all the connections for fans!!
 
hmmm.ok this make sense...I just got mine today and I was wondering why there were seperate pcb's for the backplane.
 
Well, got 14 Seagate 7200.11s ordered for my server, 2 at $160, 12 at $150 (Yuppie, ZZF!!!)

It is going to be a ton of work, gotta to backup all data to the 1TBs, then take the old array offline, then copy the data from the 1TBs to the 750GBs then build the new array and restore the data, should be the last time that I have to do this, since from now on there will be a good backup, with a cool database idea I have, (it will check to see which files are on what drive and backup new files to the newest backup member) Bought one of these for backup: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1346&ID=1642

I use the ghetto method and just use a cheap external drive enclosure minus the enclosure part.
 
yeah i have that lying around, i usually just plug the drives into a bitch box, but if they had a nice little stand id buy one.
 
I am making progress dumping my data to the 1TB drives, but it is slow: one drive at a time backing up... Then I have to pull the 750GBs from the old array, copy the data from the 1TB to the 750GBs, then I have my backup, then copy it onto the new raid array.. hoping to finish up this weekend.....

Question on the case. Do you need all of the power headers on the backplane connected?
 
No they are in serial so you just need one.

Sweet, I won't need to use splitters then. I had an Antec Quattro 850 laying around so I'll be using that. I got my case this morning, which was quick and just threw the PSU, DVD drive, and 4 1TB ES.2's I had in it. The other 8 ES.2's should show up tomorrow and my 1261ML next week. I've already got 2 Intel Pro/1000 quad port PCI-E x4 network cards sitting here, just need to pick out a motherboard for all this now. I think I'm just going to use a Q6600 I have here but it's hard finding a nice server board with 2 PCI-E x4 and 1 x8 slots.
 
I hate those racks for no other reason then there's 0 cable management features.

Otherwise, nice looking server you got - though I am sure you don't need the dual xeons. :p

There are tons of cable management options for these racks, even with minmal cable management you can make it look very clean, it's all about the routing and tieing down of the cables.

That rack specifically does not. Your only open is to tie to the mount holes.

Oh, I have ideas on cable management, I will go up with all the cables and jump to the top of the room, I may make some nice wire holders just to impress you guys on [h]!!!
 
I think I found what I was looking for in this board. It has 2 x8's and 1 x4, will run my q6600 and allows me to upgrade the cpu to a 1333fsb chip down the road.

Oh, and my 8 remaing 1TB ES.2's showed up today. I should start my own Work Log but I don't have a cool name picked out.

Well, I destroyed my old raid array this afternoon, (very scary) working on cleaning the new 1TB drives out, so I can build my array in one step... I am thinking about just running RAID 5 from the start, to get faster speeds, and I am going to have an offline backup, so it should not be a worry about data loss....
 
Deleting an array is a very scary thing. I freak out and worry if I forgot to get something off of it.

nitrobass, just ordered that Intel S3210SHLC board with 2x2GB sticks of DDR2-800 ECC. I think it might get here before the RAID card next week. Anybody got any good names for my project and I'll start a work thread?

Great job, gjvrieze. I know what you mean about "slow copies" - going a single drive at a time to an array is murder. Fortunately I have multiple raid cards and multiple chassis, so I do array-to-array copies by putting both cards on the same motherboard temporarily (and 1 meter SFF-8087 to SATA cables come in handy here due to their length). I don't like transferring an entire 22Tb over gig ethernet; card-to-card over the PCIe bus I can do 22Tb in 6-8 hours.

I just finished up my own Norco 4020 build tonight after not being able to decide a couple weeks if I'd go ahead with the build; I was concerned whether or not the low build quality would compromise my project (regardless of the low price). The trays are hard to slide in and out with a drive in it. I was constantly finding new things to be annoyed with (i.e. not all ATX spec holes were actually drilled out, so only 75% of mobo's ATX holes were able to be screwed down) missing ATX standoff holes meant having to only present for *part* of the ATX spec). Things just weren't planned out with the kind of care of more expensive cases. Even the Ofcourse it has to be forgiven for the pricepoint - things that wouldn't make the case more expensive to produce if fixed - it's just careless stuff.

I'm also a bit worried about drive temps - with 20 drives in the bays I notice they run way hotter than the 24-bay Supermicro case (8c - 10c hotter!). I may get some higher CFM fans. It doesn't really matter how cheap a case was if it kills $5000 worth of harddrives.

I will have 24 x 1Tb drives + an O/S drive when everything's done. 20 drives in the bays and 5 drives mounted internally.

If you've owned one of those Supermicro 24 bay cases you notice how much quieter this Norco based system is. I am actually going to run the Norco as my main system and have the Supermicro cases for my backup arrays so I can leave them off most of the time.

EDIT: I figured out I *do* have activity LED's with my Adaptec 52445 card - they're just very faint orange LED's (all at varying brightnesses when they should all just be solid like during an array build operation).
 
Question to anyone that knows: I threw an Adaptec 52445 card into mine - how do you get activity LED's to backplane? The Adaptec card has little 3-pin I2C headers. I notice the backplane also has some 3-pin headers. Not sure where to get that cable.


Ive got this case too and yea some of the drive trays could be a PITA but for $300 you cant really complain. The 3 pin connectors on the backplane are fan connectors...these backplanes were taken from another design and put into this case. I havent powered mine one...im still awaiting the CPU so I'm not sure how to get the activity lights working.

Thanks, I am pretty pleased with the build, I noticed that power is much better now, if the number drives reduced, peak power with cpus rendering and drives coping tons of data over is 390w, I think with everything idling, I may drop into the 200+w range!!!

The LEDs are a little faint in my case too, some more then others, but once I rack it later today, it should be easy to see them.....

nitrobass24 is correct, if you hook the controller to the fan header, I think the 4th of July would await......

A little offtopic but, Im more interested on your tuner set up. What software do you use for the recording/viewing of tv. How many computers/tvs have access to the files?

Having something similar, but much smaller scale. I'm just using windows mce on 2 htpc's with their own tuners. I have them recording to a network drive to share files. Been thinking of offloading the tuners to my file server and turning it into a sagetv server and running sagetv front end on the htpcs.

Is that something similar to what you have going on?

This is my favorite topic sort of hard drive talk!!

I am running Sage TV on Decaserver, along with 10 tuners, works very well, feeding 2 HD100 extenders and several pc clients and I use Placeshifter at work to follow CNBC and MSNBC.... I just upgraded to the RC 6.4.7 Sage server, seems to be faster then the 6.4.4 beta that I was running (need support for the HD-PVR)
I too ran MCE about a 1 year ago, but I got sick of hacking things to work and the tuner limits were nuts ( I ended up running 1 server with 1 HDHR and the other machine with 2 OTA tuners and it was annoying to setup recordings..... With Sage TV not having tuner limits, the raid array the tv records to is the limit..... Decaserver has (3) 320GB SATA drives in RAID 0 (Windows software raid) with 64k cluster size and 10 tuners recording at once is only 4-11% cpu usage.... I would never use HTPCs again, too much power and config time, much easier to grab the HD100 extenders, they just work, and 7w of power pull is great! I was recording to the big raid array, but at the time, it did not have 64k clusters and worked like crap, and if the network were to give out at all, I miss recordings.. (my main thought is that the Sage box has it owns UPS and does not pull much power, the file server on its own UPS pulls it hard, so if the power goes out for a few minutes, there is a good chance the Sage box can stay up longer)
 
I have been racking my gear in my rack, it is a lot of work to get everything to look nice, but I have done a ton of 110v wiring and low voltage wiring, and it is looking nice, when it is completed, I will post pictures!!
