Project: Galaxy 4.75

Update - I am in need of more rack space, so I am moving all the servers to a tighter configuration, as a result, I will need to purchase proper rails for the servers so I can squeeze ever ounce out of the rack.

I am working on installing a nice firewall and two workstations (rackmount) as I'm moving my entire configuration to rackmount stuff due to the ruggedness and the convenience of having everything neat and tidy.

Pics are to follow.

Also, I benchmarked one galaxy in a real time enviroment and it's performance was stellar. I'm looking at perhaps upgrading the network cards though to server grade nics so I can squeeze out all the bandwidth I possibly can out of gigabit.

You're a sick, sick man, Ockie.

Hi Ockie,
You probably know this already, but using TOE nics and SMB 2 will give you mental throughput. SMB2 does need WS2008 though (or vista) to run, but you get eye watering file transfers. A wire speed switch will keep latencies to a minimum, bit expensive but a Cisco 4948 rocks hard. (and gives you 2x10gig ports too =)

"Hi, my name is Ockie."

"Hi Ockie."

"I started with Galaxy 1.0 back in the day. A one terabyte partition used to be enough, but then it escalated to needing more and more terabyte drives. I started to think I had a problem when I had so many Norco 4020's that I couldn't fit them all in a full size rack."

Wait a second...our little club is turning into a support group now?
I'm not going through with any 12 step programs! :p

Anyway, I can't imagine you're running out of room yet. If you move the little HP server out of the rack and move everything to the bottom, you should still have only about 18U usable at the top.

lol nice, support group, I get tempted daily, I think I need a sponsor.

I bought that kit but it doesn't fit in my rack. With the rails on the case, it's too wide to slide into the rack. It's really only off by a few mm's too. My rack is just a standard APC 42U NetShelter. And my Dell 1950 slid in on the rapid rails without any problem, so I know the rack isn't the problem.

Ok that's not good i planed on moving everything into a rack when I move to the new house. I was going to use those rails. Any idea if they work in dell's rack? I'm still shopping for the rack but I'll most likely end up with dell ( I use them at work and I like them)

Can you give me an exact measurement on your posts. Something tells me that your rack may be out of spec or something odd is going on.

I can't imagine it not fitting as people are using these in standard racks. Are you sure you bolted it correctly? Sometimes the rack ears goes behind the rails (this kit includes rear behind the rail mounting ears) which would give you that few extra mm. This is basically the same concept dell uses to gain that extra space.

From the inside to inside of the mounting rails, it's 450mm. Maybe I was having a bad day, but it just wasn't working for me.

Just tried it again and it wouldn't work. I put the rails onto the case and installed the slides in the rack with the ears behind the mounting rail. It was off by maybe 2 - 3 mm's at most. There is about 1 mm of space behind the part of the sliding rail that slides out and the inner side of the mounting rail but the ears will not go over any more. I think I'll see about grinding off a mm on the outside of the ears to see if that gives me enough room.

Is your rack the type that get's it's separate pieces bolted or screwed together and not welded together at the factory?

It may not have been assembled correctly and just needs a minor adjustment.

It's the kind that gets screwed together. It should be ok though, since it's 450mm between the 2 mounting rails. What's the width on yours Ockie? I should measure one at work tomorrow too.

:D

Well, I got it in there. I took one side of the rails (the right side) and had a single mm ground off the long side of the rack ears for both the front and back. I didn't do anything to the left side rail. It gave me just enough room to get it in there. It's a little tight but still slides in/out just fine. I think it would be even better if I had a mm ground off the other side. I think I'll just leave it alone though, it's a pain to lift it in there by yourself.

451mm

Shouldn't be a problem for you then. Get this show on the road and lets see some pics already!

I will order one set and play it from there. I don't want to run into the same problem as you did, especially not with 7 sets

so i'm crusing ebay for some rackmount stuff when i come across this case: http://www.plinkusa.net/web4121.htm The same case is avail on ebay for cheaper and I can use Cashback live on ebay... so... :-D
it looks eerily similar to the Norco 4020, but the backplane looks a bit different. Due to the cheap sata cards I picked up, I have limited length on my sata cables. For those with current Norco 4020s, are the sata connectors bunched on the bottom/left side of the case or are they spread out? The IPC-4121 shows them spread out, but it looks like the Norco ones are bunched together. I would like to buy the stuff on ebay to use the cashback live. But only if the backplane works. If it doesn't then I'll have to hunt down longer fanout cables or get a whole new system... in addition to the exisiting...
Once I get the case and psu, ill be ready to start my worklog and wait for the 1TB drives to drop to 100$ this holiday season.

If I hook up my WHS to a UPS, will the UPS be able to do a clean shutdown in the case of a power outage? Do you need to be logged in for the UPS software to be functional?

Can someone suggest the size of the UPS I should buy. Something that can support running 21 drives, for just enough time so that it can shutdown.

it won't happen on it's own, you need to install software and configure your shutdown sequence. The software runs as service so no one has to be logged it for it to work
as far as ups size goes if the server is the only thing on it I think you could get away with 1000VA

Thanks.

Now I need to find a good deal on a 1000VA UPS.

OK I found that case on ebay you were talking about.. and I sent him a message asking if this is the same as the Norco RPC-4020. He replied:

Yes, they are the same, but Norco RPC-4020 is not from Norco factory in china, they imported it form some other factory in China.

Sales@plinkusa.net

I asked them if I could get a larger picture of the backplane, but by the sounds of it this case looks like it would do the trick. I think this is where i'll be buying mine, as they offer shipping to Canada and the price is right.

^^ Does anybody recognize the backplane on this? Hard to say if it has 5x4 backplanes or a 20-port backplane.

Yes, they are basically the same cases, except they have a different backplane interface. This isn't a big deal, but if you are picky like me, you will find the locations a little frustrating becasue you would need to "fanout" your cables and cables connecting on the far side of the case will come up pretty short. It would be harder for proper cable management using that case.

I would opt for a 1500va UPS since they are not very expensive.

and the backplane is very important to me. Im using some Adaptec SAS controllers that use the fanout cables, but I forgot to chk the length and ended up with short ones. So I was wondering if that picture was maybe the earlier Norco with 5 x 4 backplanes and the pics posted earlier were the newer version. I wonder if maybe Newegg got a newer revision or something? IT would be nice to know how many diff revisions are out... or if they offered different backplanes...
I jumped on it since there is a 30% Live cashback through ebay to make the case under $300USD. ETA Friday, so I'll look it over and maybe post pics if ppl want to compare...

Maybe the Norco case should get its own thread?

If anyone is bored or want to waste a good portion of their lives reading up about every single galaxy ever built, check out the thread I created here:

http://www.networkisdown.com/showthread.php?t=276

I tried not creating the thread here on this forums becasue I would waste a lot of posts and spam everything up.

Well have you figured out how your going to link yours together with iSCSI yet....I have yet to find a iSCSI solution for homeserver that I like and is affordable.

A cool little plugin for WHS for UPS interfacing is Grid Junction. Has logging options and shutdown parameters as well.
