Project: Digg (custom case) Finished

nice. should look great painted.

why can't you change out that ball? nothing in acrylic that matches the size?

That's an old ball I have in there. The stock one is gray. I'd prefer a solid blue but I can't seem to find any. Then I'd also like it printed on which I can't find either. Can't waste anymore time on it though, gotta get this case out the door.

Ya it's been up and down since the thing earlier. Probably some server work being done. I hope at least :D

so how's that a bad thing? you did the little roll eyes emoticon..

it only "closes" a circuit for as long as it is pushed down, the circuit goes back to "open" once you let go.

Ya I know you do. There isn't much to take a picture of. The case is together but I'm waiting on new fan grills because the original ones I bought just didn't work how I wanted them. I ordered them last week but the long weekend messes things up. I was going to start sanding today but decided to take the day off since everyone else was :D The lines of the case are decent but will need a bit of sanding and bondo to make them right. I expected that.

Everything is definitely taking longer than I expected.

it always does :p Just increase your expectations by a month or so and you wont be so shocked, and if you get it done before then, more power to ya :p

Cant wait to see the finished product :D

Ok new fan grills arrived late today so tomorrrow I'll have some pictures to post.

Qtip. You're not allowed to take holidays. You should know that by now.

+1 just because I took off work to get a 4 day weekend doesn't mean the people with worklogs can too...oh wait, I just started one the other day, damnit

There really isn't much to look at. If I had some time I would have put everything together to give you a general idea but I didn't....So here's the half-gutted version, getting ready to be sanded (minus the mobo tray that is). The edges of the case will all be rounded so the entire thing won't look so boxy. The rear of the case (where the cords will hang out) will actually be covered by a door, I just haven't made it yet. Gotta get my lines right before I do another panel.

looking awsome. can't wait

oh man, how cool would it be if the case was made from blue tinted plexi rather than wood? :-D

Dark blue acrylic only comes in 1/8" sizes, otherwise I could've used it.

And I don't know what's going on with the pictures or my website lately. My host isn't being very nice this month. Sorry folks.

Edit: on that note, anyone have a reliable host you'd like to recommend?
Edit#2: The last 2 pics I put on temp hosting for now.

If you're talking about a webhost, and not just an image host, I'd highly recommend Dreamhost. (http://dreamhost.com) They've got some sweet deals on hosting, and I'm going to be switching to them soon. If you're just looking for a picture host, I'd recommend flickr. (http://flickr.com) :D

I could possibly host up to 10mb of pictures on my Cogeco webspace, it's always up, and it's fast.

Host298 has been good to me so far. Cheap, too. Had them since early last january or so, haven't noticed any downtime.

the black knight always triumphs!

I use 1&1 for both my personal stuff as well as for customers. Haven't noticed any downtime in the 4 years I've been with them. Tons of storage, tons of bandwidth, great customer service.

If you go with them use my affiliate link if you don't mind so I get referal credit:

Thanks guys, my host got back to me. Apparently I got moved to a new server....Took a bit for my dns to update. All is well.

Any more progress?... computerchoppers.com seems to be a little behind what you have going on here. I've always loved your ideas, infact your mods are part of the reason for me getting in to modding :D

I actually have 'stolen' some of your ideas for my own mod I'm doing now.

Im working on it. It has been a little slow for a number of reasons, I should have some pics today. I cant seem to keep up with the site updates, too much going on.

I rewired the intake fans so they're now easily removable. Made some fan covers for the 4 intake fans similar to the blue one I posted before. Re-made the hard drive mounts because I didn't like the old ones but still haven't mounted them permanently (can't till I get everything finalized). Bought the sprayable polyester and primer to go over the MDF. Had a few spots TIG welded on the motherboard tray to make it look nicer. And finally got a decent bend in this 3/4" aluminum rod (for the top of the case)......not perfect but close enough.
And here's two pics at random........because I've really slacked on taking pictures lately. Sorry.

Hard drive mounts taped up (till I'm able to put anchors in the MDF after everything is in place)

I still can't get a decent shot of this blue, you have to really see it to get the effect.

A nice new keyboard in need of paint...
digg35.jpg

That's an odd shape, gonna have to fix that for my own logo.
digg36.jpg

Meh, good enough for now. I should have used K36 primer instead of this rattle can primer. Fills much better. Will fix that tomorrow when I have other things to primer also.
digg37.jpg

There's quite a few parts in this thing. Nice keyboard, I'd like to get Logitech to send me the CAD/whatever template used on their etching machines for the keys (so I can paint the keys) but I don't have any contacts there. Something tells me they'd never do something that cool but I can always hope.
digg38.jpg

Also finished these things up. Should hold the fan up a little higher from the grill on the intake side so you won't get the muffled sucking noise.

the backlighting isnt very bright on that leyboard stock BTW if you havent used it yet (i suspect its brand new, or rather was before you pulled it apart :p) try making the silver part thinner so the backlight works a bit better :}

you can't see it in direct sunlight, but in the dark it's fine

Nice LCD.....time to take it apart. If anyone knows a hack to get rid of the Acer splash screen logo (when you press the power button), I'd love to try it.

Got rid of the ugly logos/model number.

I primered a bunch of stuff today, LCD included. It really isn't necessary for the plastic but it has a texture so I did this instead of sanding. It's easier on my one gimp hand. K36 primer if anyone is wondering. Great stuff.

My gosh, there's some pretty serious stuff going on around here. The G15 especially...

Looks nice but are you using spray paint, powdercoating ect.? I think its powder coat(or some nice paint) but I may be wrong.

Did you have any trouble with the G-15?

I wrote a Guide at G15forums.com, just curious if it was a help...

Q paints cars for a living, or is around cars being painted all the time. Don't know the specifics, either way he knows what he's doing.

I'm around cars. The shop I'm in/next-to makes lowriders. I have booth access.

And no I didn't use sugar (I read that article too). Lacquer thinner is where it's at.

As far as today's work goes. I wetsanded all of the primered parts. The keyboard reacted a bit (I think there was something on my sandpaper when I scuffed it up) so I need to primer it again. The rest came out perfect. I also got all of the stuff to be laser cut/engraved made up so I can run to the engraver on Monday. Also have some parts needing to go to the powdercoater Monday also.

Right now it looks like if I go to pdxlan, I'm going to have a case without any hardware in it. :( So basically there's no reason to go. I'm pretty sure I can have mostly everything finished (but not tweaked and 100%) if the hardware shows up. Cross my fingers I guess.

Tomorrow is a bunch of bondo'ing and then spraying polyester over the case. I'm hoping to get things painted by late tuesday.
