Trouble like how? Taking it apart? I just grabbed a screw driver and went to town. I think I broke only 1 clip at the bottom center. Now if you can find me a cad drawing of the keys themselves so I can re-etch them, that'd be smashing :D
 
Why not just make your own letters to match the case?

It's not so much the font that is the problem. It's getting the exact positions of all the letters. I'm sure Logitech has a G15 datasheet somewhere for their laser marking machines but getting that is next to impossible. So it'd take some time and trial/error with a couple of keyboards if I wanted to figure them out myself.
 
good to hear...I just did a breakdown step by step with all the ribbon cables and whatnot.

Ya I have a ticket but right now I'm not sure if I'll make it. The paint needs at least 2 or 3 days to cure so I need to have it painted by midweek. I'd go just for the fun of networking but I don't know.

The G15 is fun to mod, I think I'll pick up another one after this to do some more to it.

are you trying to etch them on the keyboard? why not individually?

Because that's how they are done in the factory. Most laser setups are capable of this. Can you imagine what one key at a time would cost me?

Well some good and bad things for today. It's real unlikely I'll have the digg case finished by Friday's LAN. At best it could be painted on thursday/friday but it needs cure time. Today was a pain because it was raining for most of the morning and I couldn't sand all this bondo I had on the case (I sand outside because of the dust mess). Since it's the last pdxlan for a while I should show up just to see what it's all about.

A good thing though, I've got access to an Epilog laser. Looks like I'll try to get that G15 painted fully (keys too) so I can etch it later. Might be a better project for after the Digg case though.
 
come just to come...it's great fun for 4 days!

not to over do the advice, but I just like to help people solve problems.


you could:

a) scan the keyboard face-down on the scanner. This works fairly well.
b) build a jig (clay, wood, etc) to make the keys all "one piece" and you would know the exact layout.
 
I can only guess he means to paint the keys and then cut the clear back out of the paint?

Admirable goal...but his problem is pretty difficult. I just settled for painting the surround, and some, internal, mods.
 
Ya I'd paint the keys (basecoat/clearcoat) then etch them back down to the clear. Not sure if the laser will take well to the paint but I guess I'll find out.

The jig idea is pretty good too.
 
Ok 2 out of 4 aint bad. Apparently the laser didn't like the back piece of the LCD that originally said "ACER". I had sanded the text off but when the laser went over it with the word DIGG, you could still see a weird outline of ACER. I'll probably just fill it all in and paint over it. The other one that messed up was the G15 LCD cover which had the logitech logo in it. I put spot putty into the logo to fill it but the laser didn't like that also and left a weird texture. So, I sanded that out (beyond the logitech logo) and will try again later.

Here's the two that came out just fine. The big one is for the inside of the case and the small one is for the keyboard. I might redo the small one because I need something semi-transparent (for the LED light underneath). Gonna try a friend's laptop and the keys on the keyboard next but that's another story. :D

Video card didn't come with the package (will get it later direct from ATI) X1950XTX.


The only problem I see here is....The motherboard is missing a parallel port and it isn't blue. It's a black PCB. So I'll have to work on that. I'm assuming the sound card is the same. The real question is do I sacrifice performance for looks or looks for performance?

Blue? I didn't know they made a blue version...and yeah, the x-fi will also be black. Perhaps there is an adapter you can find that'll get you around the parallel port issue

They don't, I just meant it wasn't a blue PCB. I figured I'd have to find a different one that is blue.

This is VERY impressive. You make me want to get up and piece something together using my imagination. Nice work.
 
Get yourself a Parellel card. Might not look pretty and it will burn a PCI slot but the function is there.
 
Ya I hate to take up an extra spot on the I/O's but newegg does have a black parallel pcb card. I doubt there will be any room left after that.

My main issue is how these motherboards are colored. It's like they gave them to a colorblind kid and let him go crazy with it. Black, yellow, teal, gold, blue....I mean seriously. Two colors is fine. Just use black and blue!

There's an intel board that looks tempting but considering the time constraint right now, it's probably easier to find a way to paint some of these parts.

...what do you mean just black and blue??!! I am looking for the good-old green ones myself! hard to find those anymore.

I would say go with all-black (keep the Mobo and the Xi-fi but change the V-card).
 
I just spent the last hour recoloring everything. Swapped a few parts from old mobos but still couldn't change out the red sata connectors or the one red IDE (wouldn't pull off like most of them do). I changed everything I could to black, even the PCI slots. What bugs me more is the black pcb isn't really black, it's brown. And in general, the board is geared towards being red/black (even though everything is a different color).

I painted whatever I could. The IDE I can probably paint but the sata's don't slide off (thus the pins are in the way). I'm not to hip to the idea of soldering on a new motherboard.
 
Just FYI, I'm not dead. A bit busy but still moving along. The next pics I'll have are of the case in polyester. It took a bit more than I planned to get to that point. I'm also headed to the engraver again for some more work.

Funny how I try to keep a case simple but it just refuses to be that way. I need a TV show so people see what I go through while making these things. :D

I know what ya mean... not that I'm comparing myself to you but I keep thinking of new ideas for my case and if ya dont stop somewhere you'll never get done
 
just wanted to say it was really great to get to meet you at PDXLAN. Glad you came out.

Just sad you didn't have Digg done to show. Regardless of what the outcome might have been, more competition is better IMO.

Can't wait to see the progress, get those pics up!

good thing summer is almost gone, it would be kinda hot to wear that about now if it was still 90-100 degrees

Thats a really good idea, but you'd need someone to edit the video and take the time to spiff it up (I'm assuming the OP doesn't have the extra time). It'd be freakin great though to see some of this stuff in action though, and it'd probably serve as enough of a push for some new modders to get started.
 
Was just thinking . . . I know scary . . . but since your doing a digg case and all . . . if you wanted to do a modding vidcast, you should bring it up to the new Revision3 crew and see if they would be willing to put it in their lineup.

I dunno . . . I would like to see a modding vidcast and get some good ideas.
 
Hey hey. I know I've been MIA for a week or more, sorry. After pdxlan, the case sat around while I did some other work. I've got part of it in polyester and I just finished prepping the shell of the case for polyester tomorrow morning.

I've got another round of regular painting after that (lcd, keyboard, etc.) as well.
